Your favorite rendition of Auld Lang Syne?

Posted on December 30, 2010 by Kevin DuJan // Boystown, Fun, Hillbuzz, Hillbuzz TV, Multimedia, Pop Culture

Do you have a favorite version of Auld Lang Syne you would like to share?

Here in Boystown, the bars play very upbeat, high-energy renditions that are mixed by in-house VJs.  I’m trying to find examples of the best ones, but these VJs are very protective of their mixes and never put them on YouTube (which I think is very stupid, actually, because they could turn these clips into self-promotion engines, for themselves and for their bars, considering all the free advertising those clips would generate).

Do you have any specific “Auld Lang Synes” that you ALWAYS listen to every New Year?

What are your New Year’s Eve plans and do you have any special foods or activities you do on New Year’s Day you could share with us?

It seems to be a tradition here in the Midwest to have Chinese food on New Year’s Eve, and pork roast on New Year’s Day…and forgiveness is also a big part of New Year’s tradition.  It’s one of two days here in Boystown when everyone seems to encourage each other to let go of whatever petty things they hold against others…with the other day being Pride Sunday in June.  ”Oh, stop going on about that, it’s Pride! Let it go” is as common in June as hearing “It’s a new year. Let it go. Who cares if Mikos stole your boyfriend. Tomorrow’s 2011.  Steal his”.

Does the straight world have a similar take on this, with or without the boyfriend stealing?

What version of Auld Lang Syne will you be playing, even if it’s just in your head, as the New Year breaks tomorrow night?

Do you have a link to YouTube for your favorite version? I want to compile all of these for a playlist for tomorrow night so people can just have them up and loaded if they want.

Here's the song. The visuals aren't anything to write home about, but it's a great song.

I will be celebrating New Year's at my in-laws house with the family, where we will all be waiting in anticipation for the birth of my 3rd son who is due to be born (via c-section) on 1-1-11 @ 1pm.

Thanks, Kevin, will do! My hubby was really hoping for the tax deduction this year, so he's still holding out hope for 12-31-10 @ 11:59! But I'm hoping I make it to the scheduled c-section time b/c it is just such a cool Bday (and yes, possibly 1:11pm too!).

I am wishing you all the best for 2011, and can't wait to see what you've got in store for all of us next year! Happy New Year!

Used to be that every year on New Years day our family would have a huge BBQ party… we'd invite hundreds of people, everyone my parents knew, by sending out hand-colored postcard invitationsin december that I would usually do the illustration for. I have many fond memories of our "coloring assembly line" and trying to pick a winter song (not a christmas song since it was a New Years party) to include on the back.

My husband's family on New Years day makes bean soup (yum) and saurkraut (ew) which symbolize the luck and big money you're supposed to receive in the coming year. Don't know which country or culture that came from…

I think the pork roast (or at least pork) on New Year's Day is an old Germanic/Scandanavian tradition meant to bring luck in the New Year. At least, my husband's family (German) and mine (Scandinavian) have always done it. Pork and Sauerkraut. As for the Chinese food, not sure about that one.

As for the efficacy of doing it, who knows? But we have a good life, so I figure it isn't hurting anything to do it. I'll be extremely disappointed when the CAIR Bears succeed in having sales of pork banned in the United States because walking by the Honey Baked Ham store is offensive to Muslims…

Around here, black-eyed peas (ew), collard greens, and hog jowl are traditional for New Year's. As we killed a big ol' pig yesterday, I'd totally be eating his jowls (which looked delicious) on Saturday, except we're going on vacation, and I think the TSA would look strangely on that.

I like the Duke Ellington Orchestra version. It's raucous and fun. It might be hard to find though. I couldn't find it on YouTube.

I like the original version as written by Robert Burns. This is not upbeat, but more of a reflective song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acxnmaVTlZA

We didn't have the technology to video or audio tape my mom at the piano every New Years Eve playing that song but it's in my head. She loved jazz and would play it straight for a verse or two while we sang and hugged and then she'd honkey tonk it up. We ate herring with creamed onions at midnight [for luck and financial good fortune] and on New Years Day we ALWAYS had pork roast and saurkraut. Still do. And I'm first generation Irish-American – the parents and the grands came over on steamships.

Can’t do sauerkraut, even with my time in Pennsylvania Dutch country – can’t handle the cabbage “squeaking” in my teeth – plus, my SgtMaj told me of HIS trip through a sauerkraut factory – guy was tossing the shredded cabbage into a vat with a pitchfork – but he was also “chawing” on some tobacco – yep, he was tossin’ the cabbage over his shoulder, & every 3rd or 4th toss, he’d spit over that same shoulder ……………. ;-)

Black eyed peas with ham hocks, have been the ‘taste of New Year’s’ for me as long as I can remember – I was born in Virginia, but grew up in California, Texas, southern Virginia, northern Virginia, central Pennsylvania – gotta get some to soaking tomorrow, then put’em in the slow cooker {with the lid bungie-corded & the temp dial taped – y’all don’t KNOW my cats! ;-) }. Some collards in ham base to go with – this is all traditional Southern fare for New Year’s good luck ……………… ;-)

The Pink Martini version of Auld Sang Lyne is my favorite. It's in Arabic, French and English:
