Winning the lottery, then losing everything

Posted on March 22, 2010 by HillBuzz // Hillbuzz

Today, as we think about what Leftists shoved through Congress yesterday, and how giddy the Red Queen Nancy Pelosi seemed carrying that giant gavel across the Capitol grounds on her way to pound the Constitution to pulp, we’re reminded of growing up in Cleveland and watching so many people obsess over winning the lottery.

Some of us here had parents who talked about nothing else, it seemed, other than winning the lottery…or the church raffle…or the March Madness pool…or the Super Bowl tontine…whatever.  Every week, there was something to gamble away money they didn’t have on, with the insane hope that all of their problems would be solved IF ONLY THEY WON.

Well, in grade school, one of our classmates’ father won a jackpot from the Ohio Lottery.

We never were clear on how much it was, but by Cleveland standards it was sizable — large enough for the guy to pull his kid out of our little Catholic school and move way out into the suburbs, into a big McMansion he had built and decorated with as many expensive toys as possible.  By the time sixth grade started, we’d lost all track of the kid, seeing as he now attended a very expensive prep school deep in the woods in a much fancier part of town.

By the time we started high school, we heard things didn’t end up working out so well for that lottery-winning family.

Turns out the man who built the big McMansion didn’t realize he had to pay property taxes on it every year.  Since he quit his job when he won the jackpot that was supposed to solve all his problems, it didn’t occur to him that he’d need an income other than the lottery winnings to pay things like his taxes, or to prepare him for the day when he’d burned through all the cash he was given in that lump sum from the state.

In the end, the guy had to sell off most of the expensive things he bought, at a big loss.  His son never liked the prep school, didn’t do well there, and ended up having problems with alcohol and drugs after he was forced into Cleveland Public high school when his dad no longer had tuition money.  The lottery winner’s wife left him after the roller coaster to bankruptcy the lottery winnings sent them on.

Broke, the man who thought the lottery would solve all his problems ended up having to move in with his elderly mother, in a cramped two bedroom shack of a house in a deteriorating Cleveland neighborhood, worse off than where he was in life before his “big win”.

That’s a pretty common story, in terms of what happens to lottery winners, from what we understand.

It’s also exactly what we think is going to happen to the Democrat Party in the months and years ahead.

Yesterday was it for us in terms of Democrats.

We have actively worked against the Democrat Party since May 31st, 2008 when it was clear to us at the Rules & Bylaws Committee Meeting that the party had been hijacked by far-left whackadoodles, and that the DNC was taken over by a radical coup.  That’s when the Democrat Party stopped being the Democrat Party we grew up with and knew.

But, up until yesterday, we believed there was a chance we could take back the party from the Left and restore it to a moderate/centrist orbit, where we think the party belongs.  This is a right of center nation.  We’re conservative Democrats.  Centrists.  Our political bearings formed in the mid-90s, when the Clintons took the Democrats to the middle and kept them there with the help of the DLC for a good 15 years.

It was decided in 2008, by Howard Dean, Donna Brazile, and others in the DNC and Congress, to push moderates, conservatives, and centrists out of the party and shift Democrats to the far left.  While we hoped, through hard work and the consequences of electoral defeat in the upcoming contests, that the Democrats could be brought back to the center, today we realize they are just like that lottery winner from our childhood.

Yesterday, Democrats think they hit the jackpot — they finally got that monster of a bill passed, chock full of all sorts of unconstitutional, illegal, oppressive, socialist measures.  They popped the champagne and shook their fannies all over Washington, we’re sure.

Here in Chicago, we soberly realized there is no place in the Democrat Party for moderates, conservatives, or centrists.  The Democrat Party is a Leftist party only now.  If there were moderates and conservatives truly on the blue side of the aisle, they would never have allowed a bill like that to be passed.  This was not how healthcare reform should have been done — with all the bribes, the unconstitutional mandates, the overreach of federal authority, and the Orwellian elevation of the Health & Human Services Secretary into an arbitrator of life and death for millions of Americans.

We don’t see how a center-right nation embraces Democrats after this…not when Democrats have proven themselves to be so reckless, so Marxist, so un-American.

We also don’t see how the party can ever be brought back from the Left now.

There is just no going back possible.

After all the spending sprees are over, and all the champagne runs out, perhaps Democrats will realize their folly — just like that man who won the lottery but ended up losing everything because of it.  There was no going back for him, either.  He had a decent, normal life with a good job and a stable family — and he threw that all away when he thought he hit it rich and was thrust into the decadent Big Time, where he had everything his heart desired at the moment…except the good sense to realize getting everything he wanted in that moment was going to cost him everything he had in the end.

Democrats might think they won their big lottery yesterday…but we believe they’re going to lose everything, and will probably not exist as a major political party 10 years from now as a result.

In the past I believe the Democrats have painted all Republicans & Independents with the same brush…as if we were all prejudiced intolerant people, we are not! We are kind hard working very tolerant people who believe in freedom. We will all stand up now & show them that what they have done…will not stand!

At work some of the dimwits were high-fiving to celebrate The Lord Obama and his ursurpation of the Constitution. My office is on the 8th Floor and — were the windows not filled with tempered glass — there would now be a gaping granny-shaped hole in the one behind my desk. Arrrrgh.

To put it in perspective. I am a physician. My assistant doesn’t even know the name of our state rep. I tried to explain how this might end up in her losing her job (not that I want to. That I would do the billing myself at night and hire an answering service to answer the phone to keep costs down…She doesn’t understand how Medicare cuts affect her becasue she doesn’t have Medicare. An old friend is in the real estate appraisal business. Two crack whore sisters hit the lottery here in Georgia, and bought a two point seven million dollar mansion on a hill overlooking affluent Roswell, Georgia.
My friend got to view the carnage after the home (predictably) went into foreclosure. It had been completely destroyed inside, and was condemned shortly after he’d viewed it. I’d be curious to know whether or not it finally wound up being bulldozed. If so, it wasn’t even ten years old.

Last night, I wondered why congressmen who were going to vote for the bill all along, pretended to be concerned about the contents of the bill and fought against it.

Then this morning I read the following headline on Fox8Cleveland’s website: “President Obama: ‘I know this wasn’t an easy vote.”

The pretense and struggle within the Democrat Party was just freakin’ political theater. The scenes were set, the scripts were written, and the actors were selected to play the parts that would create a fight. BOTTOMLINE: They didn’t want it to look too easy!

No longer waste time watching their political theater productions – we need to find out who the producers, directors, and writers are! Expose the real leaders.

My first thought on learning of the passage of this atrocity was: That’s the end of the Democrats. You will see candidates to the right of Attila the Hun winning election in the midterms.

The curtain has been pulled back, this debacle of a legislative adventure has revealed the undeniable truth that moderate or conservative Democrats do not exist. 0bama and company have pissed off the center – there is no turning back. But they do believe that now that they have momentum they will be able to jam through the rest of their agenda.

I heard Marjorie Margolies Mezvinsky on the radio yesterday. She was the one-term congresscritter who lost her seat when she voted on an unpopular tax increase, at Bill Clinton’s behest. Even though she was a victim of voter backlash, she sang a hopey-changey unicorn song, implying that the freshman Dems in Republican districts don’t have much to worry about come November.

I listened to Fox briefly last night, long enough to hear the Florida AG say that as soon as the bill is signed into law he is filing suit on the basis of its unconstitutionality.

Your first sentence sums up a question I’ve wondered about too. Why have the Dem reps been afraid to vote to represent their constituancies? Why are they so afraid of Obama/Pelosi? Are they being threatened or blackmailed?

And as to your second point, how in the world can they let the USA go down the path of giving Obama so much control over our economy and our lives? Didn’t these Dems grow up loving the same country that we did?

I truly find it hard to believe they don’t see what Obama is trying to do. Seriously, all kidding aside, you can’t be that stupid and get elected into office. Maybe one or two, but not over 250 of them. Which leads me back to my original thought, that they must be very intimidated by this regime.

It just doesn’t all add up to me.

I have friends that are big time Democrats and I remember after the election I asked them to please make me feel better and convince me that Dr. U would be more centrist and not be the far left radical that I suspected he was.

All of them recited how the balance of powers would keep him in check, blah blah blah. One of which was originally a Hillary supporter and I have not heard from him on anything political in months! I wonder how he is feeling right now.

Another one of them is too young to realize how bad this is. He’s just one of those idealists who think we can reach Utopia on this planet. But I hold out hope because I saw that he is also a Prius owner that is suspicious of the gov’t's harassment of Toyota. There is hope.

I’ve known several people who came into small fortunes and piddled it all away, winding up worse off then they were before. I don’t know what that’s about, some quirk of human nature I suppose. Absolute power corrupts absolutely and many folks wind up destroying themselves.

I have no hope of giving the Dem party an extreme makeover. Perhaps five yrs from now the housecleaning could begin, but in order to regain any integrity they have to first hit bottom. So bottoms up to the elections in November!

What worries me about 2010 is that November is too far away – as in now the leftists have time to do the same type of cram-down on immigration reform. I can see them, once again, pushing this through before anyone can stop it AND of course would allow illegals/new citizens to vote immediately – adding millions of supporters. What do you guys think? Under any similar fathomable point in time, I’d think the idea of immigration reform given our present circumstances would be loudly laughed down. But this administration (regime?) is, take your pick… delusional, arrogant, opportunistic, ideological, or blind… that who knows? Obama has recently sent mixed signals (ie, he’s promised different people different things, depending on what he thought they wanted to hear at the time). Either immigration reform is up next, or won’t be seriously considered until after the mid-terms.

The period of time after the Nov mid-terms, and before the new Congress is seated concerns me. I hope some Dems grow a spine or a conscience between now and then.

An attorney was on Fox News over the weekend, and they asked whether the govt. could FORCE people through their states to BUY health insurance and then fine them or tax them if they didn’t. She said no, it is UNCONSTITUTIONAL, based upon some commerce clause. There are precedents for it being unconstitutional as well. Idaho has already put into law an opposition and opt-out legislation. With 36 other states poised to follow. Of course Illinois is not in that category.

I do agree with you HillBuzz, I can no longer be part of this marxist, unconstitutional democratic party, not now, not ever. There is some GOP congressman supposed to lead an investigation into whether bribes went on and who is responsible. For example, some congresswoman living near NASA got some more funding for the program, and other bribes were made by the President (using our taxpayer stimulus money by the way) in order to pass this monstrous government take over of our people and our economy. Yes, it is nice to have “no pre-existing conditions” in the policy, but it could have been done without breaking every rule or law, breaking the constitution and essentially giving a finger to the American people. Obama is so happy with himself, the little crook and liar and con man has pulled the wool over the House’s eyes and managed to charm the snake once again.

When I freelanced, I never had health insurance. I was on the verge of purchasing catastrophic insurance only, when I got hired in to a desk job with benefits.

So if it happens that I go freelance again, I will be required to buy health insurance, or pay a fine? And the catastrophic-only option may not be acceptable to Big Brother, any insurance has to IRS approved in order to avoid the fine.

How is this in keeping with the safeguards set forth by our constitution? And all the rhetoric about Republicans being in the pocket of the Insurance cos., how is this not a huge gimme for the insurance cartel? And naturally according to Chicago thugocracy practice, the Insurance Companies who play to pay will get the fat govt. kickbacks.

The Dem congressmen who voted for this are not just corrupt, they are idiots. They’re just clowns. They don’t even realize their own fearless leaders are fricking LAUGHING at them behind their backs.

Given that we don’t know what’s in the bill or, given how quickly it was slapped together, how clearly it was written I suspect it might be a bit before we really understand what will happen. It will be a good year for people who have the job of figuring out Gov legislation.

Well…now is the time to forever stop referring in any posts to your being “Democrats”. Don’t even favor them by using the word.

    You can call yourselves “Constitutionalists”.

I refer to myself as being a “Jeffersonian”, and I leave out the remainder since it no longer has the same meaning as it once did, thanks to what the former Socialist workers Party (the core of the “new Democrats”) has done to the Democrat Party.

    Its a shame, but a reality now……

A Campaign Begins Today [Mitt Romney]

America has just witnessed an unconscionable abuse of power. President Obama has betrayed his oath to the nation — rather than bringing us together, ushering in a new kind of politics, and rising above raw partisanship, he has succumbed to the lowest denominator of incumbent power: justifying the means by extolling the ends. He promised better; we deserved better.

He calls his accomplishment “historic” — in this he is correct, although not for the reason he intends. Rather, it is an historic usurpation of the legislative process — he unleashed the nuclear option, enlisted not a single Republican vote in either chamber, bribed reluctant members of his own party, paid-off his union backers, scapegoated insurers, and justified his act with patently fraudulent accounting. What Barack Obama has ushered into the American political landscape is not good for our country; in the words of an ancient maxim, “what starts twisted, ends twisted.”

His health-care bill is unhealthy for America. It raises taxes, slashes the more private side of Medicare, installs price controls, and puts a new federal bureaucracy in charge of health care. It will create a new entitlement even as the ones we already have are bankrupt. For these reasons and more, the act should be repealed. That campaign begins today.

Hard to believe Mitt when he helped institute the health plan that the state of Massachusetts has. Has he had a change of heart or is this pandering? He seems to be one thing one day and something else the next. If he was such a smart businessman, then why did he enact Massachusetts’ health scam bill?

Not only is your writing excellent, your message is uplifting for those of us who saw through this Marxist president from the day he launched his candidacy. It has been almost unbearable to watch this so-called leader of our country, systematically trample the will of the people. The most disturbing part is that he appears to be cold as ice, witnessed by his stand on partial birth abortion.

The uplifting part? That maybe there are millions more people like you (particularly voters) from all parties, that FINALLY see who the Democrats have become. Republicans need to be on notice as well.

Thank you for working tirelessly for this great country. You are educating people with your candid passion, warmth and humor.

Here’s a look at how this travesty was brought about:

    Inside the Pelosi Sausage Factory
    —————-
Last week Republican Rep. Mike Pence posted on his Facebook site that famous Schoolhouse Rock video titled “How a Bill Becomes a Law.” It’s clearly time for a remake.

Never before has the average American been treated to such a live-action view of the sordid politics necessary to push a deeply flawed bill to completion. It was dirty deals, open threats, broken promises and disregard for democracy that pulled ObamaCare to this point, and yesterday the same machinations pushed it across the finish line.
    —————–
Even in these waning minutes, Senate Democrats were playing their own games. Republicans announced they had found language in the House reconciliation bill that could doom this entire “fix” in the Senate. Since many House Democrats only agreed to vote for the Senate bill on promises that the sidecar reconciliation would pass, this was potentially a last-minute killer.

Senate Democrats handled it by deliberately refusing to meet with Republicans and the Senate parliamentarian to get a ruling, lest it be unfavorable and lose House votes. ***The dodge was a clear dereliction of duty,*** but Democrats figure the Senate parliamentarian won’t dare derail this process after ObamaCare passes. They are probably right.

From Dr. Zero (posts at Hot Air and has his own site):

“Tonight, the Democrat Party declares war on the American middle class. They are gambling on the forced creation of an entitlement we’ll be too exhausted and weary to reject – no matter how poor its quality, corrupt its inception, or unbearable its cost. We do have one last chance to strike this down. There is no reason any Democrat up for re-election in 2010 or 2012 needs to retain their seats. They don’t own those seats, any more than the Kennedys owned Massachussetts. There’s no reason the Democrats need to exist as a viable political party after 2012. Obama can be their last President.

It would be incredible if the American people could bring about such a transformation of their decadent political class, in these coming elections.

Sometimes freedom demands that you do the incredible to preserve it.”

This silly switcheroo was a cynical insider joke to subliminally manipulate voters into thinking the Republican Party was the bad guy. By using doublespeak, it played on deep memories of the “Reds” being bad people.
FYI, the color red is revered in Russia and Poland as being the color of “good luck”, so maybe we do want to hold on to it. Let them have purple- that really is a true color- and SEIU, our new masters.

Regardless of where we all fall on the right side of the political spectrum, we must no longer “allow the perfect be the enemy of the good”.

The democrats have taken advantage of the wedges within the center-right coalition. Right now the issue is life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness always means there will be people who live their lives in ways with which you disagree. On the right, we need to get over that and unite on our common wish and right to be left alone. If that looks like gays being allowed to openly serve in the military, so be it. If it looks like gays forming strong family bonds by seeking legal recognition of their relationships, so be it. Wanting to serve your county and creating strong families is conservative. And supporting people who are not “just like you” do those things is conservative as well. Friends, this is about freedom for everyone.

I think [in addition to everything else being discussed] we need to work on the ‘Mexican’ community. They are generally conservative, but the Left plans on having them on their side. The Left will give the ‘illegals’ amnesty and voter registration.

There were “10′s of thousands” at the capitol Sunday, but the media didn’t cover it much. I think that was deliberate to facilitate a sneak attack. Instead, the media focused on the ‘few hundred teabaggers’.

What a sad day for the America I once knew. I suggest everyone should print out this list and take it with them to the polls in Nov 2010 and again in 2012. Hopefully FOX will post this list on line at least once a month to keep people aware of what their so called representatives have done to them. The good news is the Dems will be out of power for many years…the sad news is we are stuck with a terrible debt for all future generations. Hopefully those who support this abomination of a Bill will be the first to suffer the consequences. You voted for a progressive fool and you will reap the whirlwind. Maybe you can travel to Cuba and use their health Care…ask Michael Moore what he will do. Most of you Obozo supporters won’t even vote in Nov. because you’ll be too busy filling out welfare paperwork or standing in line at a clinic to be seen by a PA or nurse from some third world country. I hope you’re happy with your choice, your messiah and his court sure are. They consider you too stupid to do anything about it and I’m afraid they are right. Thanks for destroying the greatest country on Earth. You’ve accomplished what our external enemies have failed to do.

She complained from the start it was too big. He ran a private club in Cleveland and left his job to “take care of his winnings”. That “custom built” home was the beginning of the end for him. Expensive cars, uptown lifestyle and when he went down he had zero friends. Sorry state of affairs.

Which brings me to the point; Nothing lasts forever. I am hearing rumblings of a Constituiton change coming. A Bill of Federalism supported by Tea Parties.

To All My HB Friends -

I know many of you do not consider yourselves Republicans – even now. Constitutionalists, Libertarians, Jeffersonians, Independents, – whatever. God bless you all and give you the strength to fight this fight.

However, there is one thing that you could do that would absolutely blow the collective mind of the DNC – change your registration to Republican! They don’t worry if they see Independent or any of the other party affiliation because they figure they still have a shot at your vote and your money. And they figure it’s better than even money that your vote would take away a Republican vote.

I am in no way trying to co-opt your personal choices or views, but this one little act can make a huge statement on a national level if thousands of citizens change their registration in the next week! And it doesn’t cost a penny! In many states you can even do it online!

Give the party what it desires most, even greater left-wing moonbats and knuckledraggers that are sure to piss off the majority of those that go to the polls in November.

Then make sure you change your affiliation and send them a copy of the change!

I don’t get it! What will it take for Americans to finally do something about the epochally, freedom destroying government we have in Washington? Freedom, having our voices heard, and our will enacted is the cornerstones of this once great nation. Our forefathers would have eagerly (and quite literally) laid down their lives fighting to keep these cornerstones in place. Our forefathers were made of much sterner stuff than their modern counterparts. We Americans today are apathetic and week, which is exactly why we are in this mess to begin with.
Our responses to complete Government control are to nag funders of the DNC, sign petitions, wait for future elections, and to whine via blog-posting. Lets say these tactics were to work, they would take years and years to work and would still allow for the abuses we see now. We need to wake up to the fact that we are so very past these actions. Like it or not, we are living in a time that requires much more extreme measures. It has been made crystal clear that what we are currently doing to oppose our Government is an absolute joke to those in power. They not only laugh at our pathetic manuvers, they openly mock us for it. I firmly believe that we are living in a time that will be talked about hundreds of years from now. Agree or disagree, the fact is that America is/was the single greatest nation on earth. Everyone on this planet knows this to be fact, so many people hate us for this simple fact. They are envious, and envy usually leads to hate. However, we are going down more quickly than anyone wants to believe. Devistating times calls for devistating actions.
Okay, I know that todays Americans will not put themselves in harms way willingly (the military being the exception), so instead of the obvious course of action, we need to march on D.C. and shut it down entirely. Not the measly one or so million Tea-Partiers that marched last year, no, we need at the very minimum, ten million people if not more. D.C. needs to be shut down completely. And for more than one day. Tens of millions of people need to refuse to pay taxes, we need to encircle every states capital and refuse to leave until we have a new government in place. We also need to do something that should have been done back in 2008, we need to have millions of people encircle all the MSM’s buildings. The MSM can not be allowed to report anything but the truth. The vast majority of Americans get their news from these sources, we will be in the minority until something is done about the MSM. The qickest way to end this nightmare would be to have all military personel walk away with their weapons and ammunition and go home. They need to refuse to come back until the current administration is securley in a prison cell. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that Republicans are the answer here, they are not. But it is the only way to get back on track. After order is restored, we the people need to find a new party that is truly of the people, by the people, and for the people.
Good and decent people very rarely get into politics, only the corrupt, greedy, power and control hungry people get into politics. When a decent person with good intentions does get involved in politics, they are quickly corrupted when they get a taste of the power and wealth that is theirs for the taking. We the people need to enact rules and laws that make it impossible for wealth and power to be attained from being an elected official. Then and only then will decent people get invovled.
I know this is a bit rambling but I am so furious. I love this country, and like watching anyone or anything you love die, it hurts, it hurts deeply. And when the hurt starts to subside a bit the anger at your loss starts to creep in. My sadness came in November of 2008, my anger has been brewing ever since.

It simply couldn’t happen to a nicer party.

Gerry Connolly, toady and lapdog, played his usual “undecided” game and voted for the bill. This piece of excrement masquerading as a human tries to get constituents arrested when they try to get his attention in the Capitol (the Capitol police refused to arrest the petite older woman who had gently put her hand on his arm to get his attention as he walked by.)

Oh, and in case anyone doubts that our elected “representatives” view themselves as a new aristocracy, here is a small but accurate piece of evidence:

The Boyz are right–the dems as a party are done, over, kaput! There is no place for the former members of the party who are not true leftist believers. Glenn Beck said that today after revealing “everyone in my family were democrats”.

I believe it is an historic time, not because of the new socialist radical healthcare but because the people have been shown just exactly what and who is running the country. We may have lost the battle with healthcare, but the war will be won.

It starts in earnest now, and every time there is an election in the country it will be a battle won by the our side…now and for years to come!

The Boyz have given us our tasks, we must complete them and then pat ourselves on the back when we see the results I know will work.

I wish I were an attorney so I would know whether or not we the people have the right to sue every member of Congress for denying our Constitutional rights!

With the lottery, it’s called living of the interest. With a 4% interest rate, $2 million in a interest-bearing account will return $60/k a year. Invest most of it, spend some prudently on the things you need (like a house, a decent car) and you’ll be fine.

But the moral of the story in the lottery, and with the Democrats as of last night.

This won’t stand. I know some mopey-types think this is the end of the world (and don’t get me wrong, Obamacare is BAD news), but it’s not over. I believe (and I’m not a lawyer, so I could be wrong) that any lawsuit brought forth would delay the implementation of the bill.

Also, the American people don’t like being given the finger and told it’s a bunch of daisies. Wisconsin Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner was on the radio on my ride home from work, he said the Republicans are now a repeal-and-replace party.

And – frankly – I DO NOT SEE HOW DEMOCRATS HAVE ANY MORE POLITICAL CAPITAL TO SPARE. They have given us all a big, hearty F-YOU and told us we’ll love this monstrosity (did you know Jane Hamsher ran the numbers at O-care leaves a family with $66k/year with less than $650/month in discretionary income?).

So let them campaign in 2010 and 2012 on the “Republicans are going to take away your insurance platforms. NO ONE WITH A FUNCTIONING BRAIN is going to believe these lying sacks of sh*t.

And, regardless of your views on abortion, Bart Stupak sold out for a piece of worthless paper from Obama. The votes he took with him WOULD have tipped the tide and blocked the bill. I am getting some fake coins and sending them to him with a note asking how it feels to be the 21st century’s Judas Iscariot.

Oh, and when the Dems are blown out in November, I will personally come down to Boystown and by the Hillbuzz boys a drink.

Fact sheet, very useful, from Hamsher at Firedog Lake. (I know) The Fact sheet would sure give everyone some great ideas to use in the 2010 campaigns.

Firedoglake eh… interesting… Jane Hamsher is to the far left… yet we have similar views on this matter…. she wants the single payer system…. if that was a given she would not be fighting the issue.

This post reminds me of another former Democrat, who aptly observed that “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party left me.”

Here’s great interplay between Sam Donaldson and Ronald Reagan.

Sam Donaldson: “Mr. President, in talking about the continuing recession tonight, you have blamed mistakes in the past and you have blamed the Congress. Does any of the blame belong to you?” Ronald Reagan: “Yes because for many years I was a Democrat.”
