Which of the Democrat Wisconsin state senators (that fled to Illinois to shirk their elected duties) are potentially subject to voter recall efforts?
Dear HillBuzz,
With the Democratic Wisconsin State Senators still AWOL, people are starting to use the word “recall,” as well as some other words like “fire,” “arrest,” and “don’t pay.” Of these, here’s some information on Recalling an Elected Official in Wisconsin.
In Wisconsin an elected official must first serve in their office for a year before they can be recalled, meaning everyone who was just elected or re-elected in November 2010 can’t be recalled until next January.
The number of signatures needed for a recall petition is 25% of the number of people who voted in the last gubernatorial election in that district.
The petitioner must first file a registration statement “with the same official or agency with whom nomination papers or declarations of candidacy for the office are filed demanding the recall of the officeholder.” No petitions may be circulated before the registration statement is filed and the petitions themselves must be submitted back to the office by no later than 5pm on the 60th day after the registration statement is filed. No signatures may be added or removed after that date.
The petitions must have the words “RECALL PETITION” on their face in bold type and must follow other rules for nominating petitions
There are also a variety of rules regarding the signatures.
As for which Democratic Senators are eligible for recall, I have created and attached a file with a spreadsheet that includes information on Wisconsin’s Democratic Senators. It lists the Democrats, which Senate District they represent, if they are eligible for recall, the percentage of the vote they received, how many votes were cast and how may they received.
If you are a resident of Wisconsin, contact your county’s Republican Party to find out if anything is being planned and if they have anything that you can do to help.

i’m sorry but there must be some way around this. how can you recall someone only after a year if they clearly aren’t bothering to serve as it is? these people are shirking their responsiblities.
I do not endorse this behavior, but they can make the argument that by leaving the floor, they ARE doing their duty to represent their constitutents in exigent circumstances. I.E., the government has been hijacked by mean people, too stupid to know the proper role of public servants (to grow fat at public expense and insult the public), who are about to make some irreparably harmful mistake, and by absenting themselves from the process, they are preventing the worst from happening.
Think if a Democrat, say a Manchurian candidate, got into office and prepared to nuke the populace in some unimaginable outrage, and needed the legal cover of a legislature to get it started. Yep, the answer might well be for Republicans to head for the hills till reinforcements arrive. (Men in white coats maybe.)
I don’t say this is a GOOD tactic, just that it is, arguably, representing their constituents.
No they are not. Unless you’re presuming every constituent is a union worker?
They were elected to perform a job; they are currently sitting in a hotel, not in the state house — they are not doing their job; The people that voted, spoke — they said, fix this mess, and elected these people to do it.
Typical libratard, doesn’t like the facts – so they make stuff up – your logic is wrong.
They were elected by a majority of people that oppose this bill so they are doing what a majority of their constituents want. No one in the senate or assembly is truly doing what all of their constituents want, they are supposed to serve the majority because that’s all they can do.
They think they can take their paycheck and run away not doing their work?
Not only are they subject to recall, they are open to lawsuits for breach of contract!
Same for all the public employees who called in sick but are showing up on video-tapes of that day in protests!
Walker is closing their offices on Monday and throwing theirs staffs out.
Do you have a source on that?
Where did you see/hear that Walker is closing their offices?
If that is true, then Monday might be the most enjoyable and marvelous day EVER.
Just want to say that I am shocked to see that four of the Dem senators got 98+ % of the votes.
That only happened in the failed communist states, and is a sure sign that election fraud has been going on.
I hope the citizens of that district can do something about it.
It’s because Republicans don’t bother to run candidates in those districts.
There is no Republican running for Mayor of Chicago.
That’s disgraceful.
They say “We can’t win”, so they don’t even try.
Probably what happened in those Wisconsin senate districts.
Republicans just don’t even try…A LOT.
That is disgusting to hear. The rnc needs to be replaced by tea partiers. Period!
Samae thing hppens in races throughout democrap gerrymandered districts in California and even where repubics have a chance such as my area where they controlled the area’s congressional seat & state legislature positions the RNC provides not a dime or campaign support to the candidates who do run. The Republican party is nearly as useless and destructive as the democraps. The TEA Party is our only hope for the future and if the repubics (no spelling error) do not wake up and heed the voters they will be added to the list of the Federalists and the Whigs as dead political parties.
The election returns from those districts didn’t show Republican challengers. However the flip side is that Republicans hold 5 Senate seats where the Senator in question received more than 99% of the vote.
Also, in the past election, many of the Republican elected officials in safe seats were out campaigning in the areas that were deemed up for grabs. All in all we flipped both houses of the State Legislature, won the Governorship, flipped some of the US House seats and, did something many people said was impossible, defeated Russ Feingold in the US Senate race.
The Republicans were not perfect in Wisconsin last year, there were things that we can improve going forward, but we worked very hard to achieve what we have right now.
Sadly, Kevin, you are right. Republicans have done a miserable job of running candidates in the districts the Democrats won. We must do better.
Can someone post what is required to be a teacher in Wisconsin? I know people here in California that need a job and are willing to relocate.
What sane Californian is not looking to relocate and I have lived here since childhood. The state is doomed and if the left isn’t defeated in Madison Wisconsin is doomed too.
Idea from the comments in ChicagoBoyz Getting to a Wisconsin Senate Quorum
Can they initiate Impeachment of the missing Senators? This would force them to either:
1) return to defend themselves
2) lose absentia and be removed from office
The threat would cause 1)
Now what charges could be brought up?

The democrats are doing the only political thing that they can in this situation and I respect them for it. I am a republican, but next election I am voting democratic because they have the integrity to stand up againt the bill unlike any of the republicans in office.

Funny how many people decry the Wisconsin state senators’ actions while supporting u.s. senate republican obstructionist filibusters, isn’t it?
