Deadlines for making a decision in 2012:
To be on the Florida ballot, Republican candidates must file by 5pm October 31st, 2011 (though Florida is being punished by the RNC by “going early” and only half the delegates will count, making it a state a candidate can miss the filing deadline for).
To be on the ballot in South Carolina — a state all candidates should indeed want to be on the ballot for — filing deadline is 5pm November 1st.
Something to keep in mind:
There is a GOP debate on October 18th, 2011…the same day Governor Palin is scheduled to be in South Korea giving a speech. It seems unlikely she would fly back and make it in time to attend this debate.
In all likelihood, she will not announce her candidacy until after this debate…so possibly sometime between October 19th and October 30th, since I doubt she would do it on Halloween…though, actually, she could miss the Florida deadline and announce as late as the morning or afternoon of November 1st and still be able to participate in the South Carolina primary.

I'm glad you put the history of declarations in a posting as it really helps put things into perspective. Having said that, I suspect that Palin's organization is doing a lot of polling (the internal ones that aren't published) to help determine her chances. I don't think she'd run if she didn't think she would have a fair to good chance to win as I don't think she'd risk splitting the conservative vote and allowing a Romney candidate to slip up the middle. If the polls indicate she can't win then I believe she'll act as kingmaker to propel the best candidate for the country into the winner's circle. Imagine the damage she could do to the Dems by lending her support to various conservative Senate and Congress candidates. She could not only ensure GOP majorities in both houses but chould change the makeup of the GOP by ensuring real conservatives win.
Kevin, I have been busily posting every one of your posts today to every blog I read on a daily basis. Your are sooooooo correct. I have also sent them to all the comments sections.
I can only say that I wish I were running for an office at either the statewide or federal leval because you are so RIGHT ON.
I lovew you to death!!! And, I do not mean that in any way against you. I just wish that I were half as smart as you.. However, you do encourage me to continue to FIGHT ON FOREVER!
Love you, love up, love!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I believe you have the date of both the debate and the speech in Korea off by a week as I think they are Oct. 11th but either way this which I figured out before works.
There was one thing that conflicted with the notion that Sarah Palin would get into the race and that is, she is scheduled to speak at the "World Knowledge Forum" which runs from the morning of October 11th to the evening of October 13th in Seoul South Korea. There is a major Republican debate in New Hampshire the evening of October 11th so this would seem to be an insurmountable conflict.
However they just announced when she would speak there. It is from 9 am to 10 am October 11th. Still seems bad but Seoul is 13 hours ahead of the EST and so when she speaks there it is from 8 to 9 pm Oct. 10th in New Hampshire. That leaves 23 hours, assuming an 8 pm start, to get from Seoul to Hanover NH which is doable if a bit hectic as the flight I'm told is a 14 hour one.
I have said that Sarah Palin is not beholden to ANYONE regarding her plans. And, don't forget that Palin is nothing if not strategic in the way she does things. She is wisely, I believe, weighing everything and the current candidates, evaluating their strengths and weaknesses, before she makes an announcement.
Kevin, thanks for posting this and helping us keep things in perspective, which is one of the reasons I love Hillbuzz.
Sarah Palin will be at the World Knowledge Forum in Seoul, South Korea this October 11 at 9:00am
Sarah could be waiting to announce after Bristol finishes her reality show, so as not to interfere with Bristol and the show. Fox has become entertainment channel (sexualization of the female hosts). Fox is like the rest- has coordinated it's message to go against any republican, so in the end only the president is left . I saw Greta looking frustrated asking Sarah if she was undermining the president's foreign policy by going to Israel and talking there. You should have seen the look Sarah gave Greta– the look Kevin talks about. I hate the gotcha debates. As Sarah said the candidates should not be attacking each other, but discussing the problems the president has created. I thought republicans were not going to attack each other. RUN, SARAH, RUN. ON THE OTHER HAND, KEEP ERICK AND MEDIA GUESSING!
Greta and Shep are very liberal. Mostly Greta hides it.
With Shep it is very apparent.
I'm sure there are other liberals but they try to keep it under wraps
as a journalist should.
Carlson and Hoover…sometimes they seem conservative and sometimes they seem
liberal. Kind of a guessing game depending on the day.
and one can miss the filing deadline and still be on the ballot. I believe that McCain filed late in Texas, and was still on the ballot. That might have been for the actual election…which would give major precedent for allowing a candidate on a ballot for the primary (but the other candidates would not be happy about it..but I believe the Ds did not dispute the TX ballot).
