URGENT NEW YORK GROUND REPORT: Violence to break out this weekend over the Marathon’s diversion of resources
Today while Justin and I were driving to Wisconsin and back to do some canvassing for Romney/Ryan in the morning, I used the time on the road to make calls to a handful of friends I have not yet been able to reach in New York City. All of them live in Manhattan and were spared any direct damage from Hurricane Sandy — but all of them have friends and family in Brooklyn, Staten Island, Long Island, and other areas that were impacted by flooding and wind damage. Most of these people do not know each other…but EVERY CALL WAS THE SAME.
Immediately after we established they were fine and had survived relatively in tact, all of them said a variation of this to me: THERE IS GOING TO BE VIOLENCE THIS WEEKEND. BECAUSE OF THE MARATHON.
The anger in these people’s voices was thick when they talked about “that (insert expletive here) Michael Bloomberg and that (another expletive, this time really colorful) Marathon”. The only thing I can compare this to is one of those episodes of 20/20 where they report on some kind of caged animal attack…and they begin the segment by showing some rube taunting a lion for the delight of roadside tourists…and anyone with sense to them can just SEE that the lion is getting angrier and in moments is going to maul that Bubba. There’s this tension you feel as a viewer, just knowing what is going to happen, but being unable to stop it.
THAT is how my New York contacts report on the mood in the city right now…with the wealthy New Yorkers like Bloomberg completely oblivious that they are taunting an angry lion by going forward with the Marathon.
One of my friends used to date a Port Authority cop and is still friendly with him. She tells me that the cop is enveloped in a sense of pure dread headed into this weekend. This is a cop who worked recovery operations and was on duty at the dumps sifting through rubble after 9/11 looking for body parts to identify…and he says that right now he feels the worst he’s felt since then. He is horrified by the Mayor’s decision to go forward with the Marathon because “people are going to die when the fighting starts over this”. The cop describes New York right now as “a powder keg” and Bloomberg is lightning the fuse by diverting generators, food, water, and other resources to the Marathon.
Anyone with sense about him would postpone this event, or cancel it outright this year. But Bloomberg is pressing ahead with this because Democrats can’t risk political fallout for admitting that New York hasn’t yet recovered from the hurricane…and in doing this, Democrats are actually sealing their own doom because hosting the Marathon will result in more anger and damage to the party than canceling it would have. This is why Democrats should never hold high elected office…they forever make situations worse by trying to cover things up, hide the truth, or score political points.
An ex of mine who lives in the city and is a comic book artist told me his family on Long Island are furious and are now voting for Mitt Romney because they are disgusted with Democrats; this is an ex who wouldn’t speak to me from 2008-2010 because I backed McCain/Palin after the nomination was taken away from Hillary in 2008. He finally admitted I was right about Obama after Obamacare passed, because his dad is a doctor and told him that the mandate and all its 20 myriad taxes would destroy the economy as we know it and ruin medical practice in this country. My ex’s parents have never voted Republican in their lives but are doing so on Tuesday…and he reports that many of his parents’ friends and their families are doing the same. Once again, this is first hand reporting on the ground telling you that Hurricane Sandy did not help Obama…but it actually damaged Democrats immensely, only the Ministry of Truth won’t report on that. ”It’s kind of like the dam hurts with all the flooding and people are letting all their pent-up frustration and anger burst out…and it’s all going towards Obama,” my ex reported. ”And with them going ahead with the Marathon people are saying it’s just because canceling it would hurt Obama, so people are angry. There’s going to be a riot this weekend, I really think there will be”.
It’s ironic, too, because for the longest time the Left has tried to scare conservatives by claiming that blacks would riot on November 6th if Obama is not reelected…and, thus, one of the reasons giving for reelecting him was to keep blacks from rioting (so vote for Obama because otherwise the cities will burn). Democrats are now pushing forward with this idiotic Marathon while people in New York are in need of those resources to meet their basic needs…and not a single person in the party has sense enough to see the explosion of anger this is going to cause.
“It’s going to be bad. It’s going to be Rodney King bad. Just angry people smashing things and killing people because they are so mad that food and water and electricity is being taken for the Marathon but not given to them. I think they’re going to attack the Marathon runners and beat them. If I knew anyone who wanted to run that race, I’d tell them to just not come because they are going to get hurt”, one of my friends from college, a public school teacher in NYC, told me this morning. She believes that throngs of New Yorkers who have no heat, food, water, or electricity (or even homes) are going to descend on the Marathon route and take their anger out on the people running the race and “beat the (expletive) out of them”. She thinks they will also mob the Marathon headquarters “and take what they want” before the race even starts.
For the last two months, the Ministry of Truth has been constantly pushing stories designed to terrify Republicans and cripple them with frost-fingered fear in the lead up to this election. Great Merciful Zeus, it is a divine irony that the people who need to be truly afraid right now are Democrats…because they are playing with dynamite in regards to this Marathon and they are completely ignoring the dangers in going forward with an event that sucks resources from hurricane-affected areas just so the very wealthy can have their massive parade/party throughout the city.
“What you don’t understand is what a nightmare that race is in a normal year. It makes life Hell on us under normal circumstances, especially with all the people form out of town who come to clog up the city. You want to do THAT right NOW when all Hell just broke loose? Are you out of your damn mind?”, another friend said. I sympathize with this because when Chicago hosts big public events life grinds to a halt in the Loop. All summer long, various neighborhoods hold street festivals that disrupt life for whole weekends. A few times a year, Chicago shuts down certain major roads for bicycle races, marathons, 5ks, or whatever. One time, Mayor Daley allowed Michigan Avenue to be shut down for Oprah Winfrey for THREE DAYS (I believe she was being moved from one part of town to possibly the lake, which might have been a more natural habitat for that charybdis).
I think if Hurricane Sandy happened in Chicago, Mayor Daley would have postponed a race that was supposed to be run the very next weekend. He would have had sense to know that people would explode with anger if basic needs weren’t being met but the City diverted resources to a race. Rahm Emanuel, the current Mayor, would probably let the race proceed because he’d be more worried that canceling the race would disappoint people…and then they wouldn’t vote for Obama on Tuesday as a result. It looks like Michael Bloomberg is in the Rahm Emanuel school of thought.
I really hope New Yorkers can keep it under control but I’ll tell you that Chicago was mighty cold and wet today. Justin and I have everything we need, yet I woke up this morning and felt pretty snappy because I do not much like the cold. I had to really control myself to be polite to Justin and he had to restrain himself because he hates driving but we wanted to hit Wisconsin every day to canvass before the election. I can easily see how New Yorkers who are wet, cold, hungry, and living in the dark would be ready to explode with the slightest provocation. I’ve been to New York many times and people there are on the edge of violence on a gorgeous, breezy, bright summer day. So many people in such a tight space puts everyone on edge…and then throw in a hurricane flooding the subways and forcing people to walk two hours over bridges and through damp tunnels to get to work…and you have people who will be furious that a City that can’t get its act together to restore life to normal can take the weekend off to screw around with a race?
There is no way that this ends well…unless someone makes Bloomberg postpone or cancel the Marathon.
“It’s going to get ugly. Real ugly. Please pray that people stay patient and don’t explode”.
For any of you that were afraid Hurricane Sandy would end up helping Barack Obama…I hope you now see that it’s really DEMOCRATS who should be afraid of the damage this storm is going to do to them between now and November 6th.

K, nice first hand reporting. I refuse to be blackmailed by the argument I need to vote black to keep blacks (or anyone one else) at bay. Posted this on Nate Silver’s 538 blog today, a small thorn in the leftists’ shoe for the weekend:
538 = O +80% to win, with caveat: O like team leading by field goal with 3 mins left (such teams win 80%, says 538). Really? Has 538 noticed the smart guy is investing his valuable time Sunday in a state he’s supposed to lose (Pennsylvania) and the not-so-smart guy is stuck 3 out of 4 days defending a state he has already lost (Ohio)? The smart guy is running up the score while 538 diddles with halftime statistics. The airhead Sunday morning jocks do a better job guessing NFL winners. 538′s five minutes of fame will soon be at an end.
here is some realism about football which shows Nate Silver knows nothing.
I follow Australian Rules Football since forever. I chose to follow St. Kilda when I was roughly 4 and 1/2 years old. My logic was sound at the time. St. Kilda gets into the finals but has only won once. On that occasion they ended up winning by the margin of 1 point. It was a point that came at the last moment, prior to the siren. There have been other matches that have ended the same way, with just one point in a tightly contested game. Many years later, they lost because the rules of the game would not allow time on when the game was a draw and the following week they were full of fizz not pep.
The point is, that in football, with 3 minutes left there is not a strong guarantee that one team will win unless that team is well ahead and nothing can change the score.
This is the same in this Presidential election. It is tight, very tight. The winner will be the one with the best game plan. Benghazi was not a good game plan.
I know you refer to the part of Cleveland you grew up in as Thunderdome, but I’ve had this stuck in my head ever since some of the unfiltered video on the ground started turning up.
Can we start calling Bloomberg “Aunty?” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEb8-v1nkRo
Actually quite a few people call him Nanny Bloomberg. I think it fits!
Kev, I can only wonder what’s going to be coming up from the sewers after Tuesday (and I’m not talking rats, roaches, bedbugs, and god knows what)…
You are a not job.
Just read on instapundit that a stop the Ny marathon site just went live on facebook. I don’t use facebook but there you have it.
I wish Romney would implore Bloomberg to cancel the race as well. Yes, the usual folks in the Peanut Gallery would start screaming, but that’s kind of my point. It would put political pressure on Bloomberg, and by extension Obama.
I really have no problem wondering/believing that maybe they want something bad to happen so Obama can sweep in and “speechify” every one back to loving one another again. After Benghazi, I would put nothing past that cretin and his odious little crew.
I doubt that Obama would have the pull to mollify New Yorkers.
When I heard the marathon was still happening, I had the same thought, that the starving people would be pelting rocks at the runners or something terrible.
But I’m confused…do people associate Bloomberg with the Democrats? He ran as a Republican but is now an independent or something? Is he officially a Democrat now?
Officially?? No, he’s still an Indie who LOVES Obama, big government, the nanny state, the Ground Zero mosque and gun control among other things. So, he is “figuratively” a Demonrat, but not “literally”. (Did I get that right??…)
I doubt that will matter much next election – he’s OUT for sure after this mess.
He can’t run for a 4th term as mayor, even if he wanted to. He is term-limited. The next mayoral election is November, 2013.
He was term-limited before. He’ll get the rules changed.
I don’t think he’s even interested in doing that and even if he tried, it’s very unlikely he’d be successful and that’s even if Sandy never happened. People are a little fed up him already with his new policies to limit the size of soda containers in NYC and pressure new mothers in hospitals to breast feed, rather than use baby formula, etc. So, personally, I’m not the least bit worried about a 4th term of Bloomberg. It ain’t gonna happen, with or without Sandy or the NYC Marathon.
That mayoral election cannot come soon enough. Bloomberg is a total disaster. He has a nanny state with all sorts of stupid regulations, right down to insisting that there be 3 people per car. What tosh!!
All true, but his successor is likely to be worse.
And he officially endorsed the president earlier this week.
Bloomberg was a Democrat his entire life until he saw his opportunity to run was as a “Republican” in 2001. He was a Republican for only about six years. He then turned Independent in 2007. His heart is and always has been with the Democrats.
I’ve always found it interesting how the left can say they’re for “the little guy” when they constantly cater to the 1%.
We see it out here in San Francisco. The local paper goes on and on about the evil 1% and yet the rest of their paper is all about the hippest new restaurants, trendy shops, expensive real estate, and society galas.
The Left out here totally embrace the 1% while claiming that they don’t. All of the local politicians attend the Opera, Ballet, and Symphony openings, and they don’t sit in the cheap seats. Nancy Pelosi is at these events all of the time, schmoozing with her fellow 1% and then saying she supports Occupy, huh?
The problem with folks like Bloomberg is that they live in the rich leftist bubble. So, people are hungry and parts of the city are in ruins, it wouldn’t be fair if that ruined their fun and their chance to be one of the “in” crowd. What I don’t understand is why the runners would even want to be there. Wouldn’t it be unpleasant for them to run through a devastated city?
I’ve always thought that Leftists were kinda “off” mentally, but I’m beginning to think that they’re deranged. In what kind of world do people obsess over a race when people are cold and hungry? It just makes no sense.
Idea being floated this is a set-up so Obama can swoop in and “persuade” bloomberg to call it off.
Idea also being floated they are trying to incite violence as an excuse for declaring martial law.
Even if neither of these things happen, I feel like the “dark comedy” that is America is just going to turn “dark” period.
Madness. Absolute madness to go ahead with the Marathon. It is, in effect, telling those who are suffering so much that they are nothing, and that the “elite” class don’t give an aerial sex act if they live or die.
Re Oprah — “charybdis”. I like it a lot! Very, very erudite you are!
I’m a runner, to forum to see what they’re saying—wow!
They are oblivious to the tension– they suggest pinning a message:
“Running and Better than Ever—New York” with background of silhouette of NYC skyline
http://www.runnersworld.com/community/forums/races-places/new-york-city-marathon/runners-support-ny-this-during-race
Others are suggesting cancelling race and donating money. Others say, hell no. no reason to feel guilty–race is on.
I wonder if they’ll start feeling guilty as they are running through areas of New York that are devastated by this storm. I wonder if they’ll run by apartment buildings, dousing themselves with water from the plethora of water stations along the marathon route, and think about whether there might be elderly people up above them who are without water. (Runners are more likely to pour the bottles of water over their heads than they are to drink it.)
I heard on the radio today that the starting line for the marathon is on Staten Island, just blocks from the worst of the destruction. I wonder if the 30,000 runners will give a second thought to the people who are homeless as they run past the storm debris.
The whole idea of conducting an event as completely self-centered as a marathon after the devastation of this storm is unconscionable. Bloomberg says it’s because they have $350 MILLION in sponsorships and hotel reservations and restaurant business that would be lost if they cancelled it. He also said that he wants to show the world that you can’t keep New Yorkers down.
Yeah, right. It took 10 YEARS after 9/11 for New York to agree on what to build on the WTC site after 9/11/2001, rather than immediately building two brand new towers, bigger and better than ever, to show the world that you can’t keep New Yorkers down. That would have shown that you can’t keep AMERICA down, and it’s what they should have done. Instead they bowed to Muslim sensibilities and it took 10 YEARS to figure out what they could do that wouldn’t piss Muslims off. Guess a storm and homelessness, and no electricity and starving citizens can’t keep New York down, but some pissed off Muslims sure can!
Here is a group of runners that are planning to help Staten Island instead of run the marathon.

Yes. the Mayor is Great one day and a fool the next. But lets not exaggerate. New Yorks are all talk, as long as there are no snowballs, they won’t do any harm to the runners…
“I think if Hurricane Sandy happened in Chicago…”
In 1979, Michael Bilandic was Mayor of Chicago when the Blizzard of 1979 blanketed the city. His slow response to the massive snow blocking the streets of the city was probably the reason why he was defeated in the Mayoral primary that year.
Ever since then, city officials supposedly advise those who are in charge when a storm hits, to “plow the streets or you’ll end up like Bilandic.”
I suspect that Mayor Bilandic did not have a slow response;
it was the unions who purposely had a slow response in order
to lay blame at his feet.
Kevin: I really pray that a riot doesn’t happen, but apparently Bloomberg has not canceled the race and is calling it a “Race for Recover.” which is anything but..
I cannot imagine how dire it is there for people without food, water, power and losing hope that they can survive this. Yesterday I saw where politicians were actually blaming the Red Cross for not helping with food, water and clothing!
It’s a world turned upside down.
Check this site for your nearest Victory Center and give them a call.

Thanks…headed to Elkhorn
I am in Wisconsin. I don’t know HOW to help or canvas…who do I call…how can I help
Try donating to the Salvation Army or to Mercury One Relief fund (supported by Glenn Beck). http://www.mercuryone.org forger the Red Cross – their CEO’s get paid a TON of money!
Besides that, after Romney’s campaign asked for donations
and tried to give them to the Red Cross, I believe they were
refused. Not one dime to them from me if this is true.
Samaritan’s Purse or Salvation Army.
Franklin Graham’s Samaritan’s Purse is already in the area and helping. Donations go to the victims, and they don’t preach to the people as some suggest.
Franklin Graham seems to be a good man.
If the Baptists do what they did when Katrina hit, there will be a lot of people coming to lend a helping hand.
I have always been impressed with the Amish after they were devastated by a tornado back in 1984/85. They banded together to rebuild their homes without all of this whining and bleating about big government helping. I can still remember that particular storm because it passed over me, as I was collecting my children from playing T-ball.
I have worked with Samaritan’s Purse, and they are bible thumpers for sure, but that didn’t bother me. They have professional contractors on staff to supervise, and they do a fantastic job — all for free. I’ll be going up there for a week to help out soon i’m sure. Looking forward to it.
Mercury One is working with local churches in the affected areas to get the donated food, blankets, water, etc., to the people who need it most. Glenn Beck said they’ve raised around $750K so far. He said the Red Cross has only raised $11 MM this time – when they raised like $80MM after Katrina. Maybe a lot of people are pissed off about the way the RC and BSNBC dissed Romney… I sure am. I donated to Mercury One.
Let’s hope it doesn’t get that bad. I can see Nov 6 from my front porch, and it can’t get here soon enough.
I can completely see this occurring. I’m not even from the city (upstater) but I know how angry I am 3 hours away from the destruction. Multiply that by the NYC attitude and “powder keg” is a very apt description.
The anger over the Marathon is just the beginning, Kevin, My husband and I were talking about those people who lost their homes due to water having to deal with their insurance companies. The ones who lost their homes due to fire are the lucky ones because FIRE is normally covered under home insurance. Insurance coverage for water damage is determined by how the water came into the house and other factors. You will see some angry people who find out in the next few months that they were not covered for a flood. It’s going to be interesting to see this story unfold.
BTW,I hope Gov. Christi enjoyed his photo-op with Obama because I have drawn a line in the sand with these politicians. If Christi runs in 2016 for president, he will NOT get my support. I know I’m not alone. So if you support Christi in 2016, think back on what he did this past weekend, used a crisis to his advantage for political gain. Never forget Christi is truly a RHINO.
Have to say Christie has had a few close calls, but how he has dealt with Obama in regards to Sandy was his complete “JUMP THE SHARK” moment. I’m done with him too.
lets just hope that they direct the anger to the proper people .
it wouldnt bother me a bit if every resource brought in for the marathon (including the generators) was taken by “THE PEOPLE”
and used to by “THE PEOPLE” ! only an idiot would take part in the race , I wouldnt even wear jogging gear that day for fear of getting the crap knocked out of me !
What a tragedy. Democrats being democrats. They will eventually get around to blaming Republicans for this, I’m sure.
On a side note, Kevin, Obama was in Hilliard, Ohio today and 2800 people showed up. Columbus area with suburbs has over a million people. Romney’s rallies are enormous in comparison. Looking good.
I heard the smallest Romney rally today had 15,000 people.
I heard audio from one of Obama’s and it sounded like there were only a handful of people. He was having a rally in Lima, OH at 3:30 this afternoon (I think) and it was going to be in a high school gym, for heaven’s sake!
I was driving through Ohio today and people were complaining about traffic because of Obama.
Nanny Bloomberg is more interested in those corporate sponsor dollars than he is in the residents of NYC
I am not the only Upper West Side resident that is appalled at this STUPID call to continue as planned.
Better he should ask all the runners to volunteer in the house-to-house search on Staten Island. I’d say more, but don’t know if I can without using the words “douche” or “bag”.
Anthony,
Since you mentioned you are in NYC, I have been wondering if the people who are in the unaffected parts of the city are helping these people out who are crying out in desperation? They need blankets, clothes shoes etc, the basics which they say the Red Cross is not providing. I know people would donate these supplies, it is my understanding that the Red Cross does not want supplies just cash.
I have a feeling it is going to take someone like Trump (with those types of connections and money) to stand up and start taking care of people and televise it to shame Doomberg.
Trump has Atlantic City to worry about. I believe that would be his 1st priority.
yes, Heidi, we are.
I spent all day yesterday distributing 5 gal bottles of Poland Spring water (which I paid for), and every item on a shopping list I got from friends who live downtown.
I hired a car service to take me to 9 different stops, and was glad to pay for it out of pocket. I am NOT the only one doing this in NYC. To my surprise, the driver comped me for the service when he realized what I was doing, saying “It’s on us – we’re all in this together”.
It galls me to read what some people think we New Yorkers are like. There was a post yesterday that characterized us as out of touch, elite, and completely selfish because we were “whining” for what we lost. That pisses me off to no end.
Not all New Yorkers are liberal elitists. I was born and raise in Manhattan, and totally take exception to this post by The Tamminator:
http://hillbuzz.org/chaos-in-the-city-that-thinks-they-are-smarter-than-you-56733
If you don’t know who the fuck we are, then you should keep your fool mouth shut until you do.
That’s it – short and sweet in a New York minute
Yup, and it’s me who allowed your snotty little post through, Anthony, to allow you to brag about how big of a person you are.
If you actually read my post, I was talking about how ridiculous it was that so many New Yorkers(especially downtown Manhattan) were not prepared. Dumpster diving 2 days after the storm? Are you telling me that New York doesn’t sell canned foods? Bottled water? Flashlights? Hmmm?
I watched the National news for a week leading up to the storm, and they TOLD YOU that it was going to be a terrible, damaging storm. You guys should have been prepared for an emergency. There are people suffering unnecessarily because they DID NOT PREPARE.
And my post was not in reference to people living on Staten Island or Rockaway or Gerritsen Beach or Coney Island, etc. Those places were completely devastated on the level of Katrina. There is nothing those people could have done to prepare for that level of damage other than to GET OUT. I read somewhere that Mayor Doomsberg didn’t even tell the people in Gerritsen Beach to leave. I hope no one in that community lost their life because of that dolt of a Mayor.
Put simply: You guys were not prepared. Sorry if the truth hurts.
Well, thanks so much for letting my post through, Tamminator, and to be sure, we are ALL pulling together to look out for each other in NYC.
My post was not so much to draw attention to myself as it was to what I read as a snotty (your word) post about NYC residents. If that was not your intention, then I apologize.
As far as being prepared – I don’t know how one can prepare for this kind of disaster. Manhattan stores do indeed sell food, water and flashlights, but on Sunday morning, the shelves were bare and by Monday, many stores were closed. Not to mention spoiled food because there was no power.
Your post mentioned nothing about food water or flashlights, btw. The line I found so offensive is this one:
Now really – can you NOT see how you have insulted an entire city by trying to be cute about your views on NYC residents?
Just sayin’…
I wasn’t being “cute”. I am a realist who can’t believe that your citizens didn’t prepare for this. But you also don’t have huge grocery store chains like we do in “flyover country”(which you New Yorkers mock) so it might have been harder to prepare, but are you freaking kidding me? You guys gloat about how you are the end-all and be-all of America.
You’re not.
WE in the Midwest, produce your fucking FOOD.
Oh, and for the sake of discussion, I have been to NYC at least 20 times, know the layout, know the lay of the land, and I have many many friends there. I have a friend who works for Nickelodeon that I still haven’t been able to contact.
You think I don’t care about New Yorkers? No, I was pointing out that you in New York don’t PREPARE.
I’m still hoping to hear from my friend Bob, (who lost 20 friends on 9/11, BTW). I taught him to be resilient, and he’s a former Minnesotan, so I’m sure he’s okay.
Stop whining about my post, and just continue doing work for those who need help.
BTW, I’m proud to insult an entire city that is so stupid that they elected a Mayor who believes in Global Warming, and doesn’t prepare his citizens for disaster after the horrible terrorist attack on your city.
It’s called “weather” and we deal with it in droves in my State of Minnesota.
“Give me a sandwich and a Bloomberg and I can rule the world.”
(Something for the old school SNL fans.
)
Thank God Bloomberg endorsed Obama. Two peas in a stinkin’ pod.
I do not want to see anything bad happen in New York. They are my fellow Americans and fellow human beings. Yet their obstinate, willful ignorance and upside down thinking in the face of decades of evidence pointing to liberal disaster after liberal disaster, leads me to worry for their safety. Turns out Libs are not only our worst enemies, but their own worst enemies as well. May God protect them from themselves and help use this latest disaster to open their eyes to reality.
Some good news, Staten Island Garden Hilton Hotel will not displace evacuees for marathon runners. One hotel owner does the right thing, I think I will send him a thank you.
http://www.ny1.com/content/top_stories/171675/si-hotel-owner-refuses-to-evict-evacuees-to-honor-marathon-runners–reservations
Interesting report Kevin! Does your sense tell you that these NYers will vent their anger “down ticket” as well? That message would be heard loudest and clearest IMO.
A special election was held last year to fill Anthony Weiner’s house seat and for the first time in almost a hundred years, a republican was elected. Much of that district is now flooded, and I think that the republican representative lives in Breezy Point and that his house was one of the 100 houses that burnt down in the huge fire. So who knows? It’s NY but people are very upset.
Yes indeed, the man’s house was burnt to the ground. He was very philosophical. He is ok and his family is ok.
Kevin, you are cutting-edge reporting as usual. Hannity is just now on saying the exact same thing you are saying. Good job!
Anecdote from upstate NY
My area was not hit by Sandy but we are feeling the effects.
Today, while in Lowe’s shopping for a kerosene heater and possible backup generator the salesman said the store can’t keep either in stock and there’s a backlog of at least one month for generators.
He said people from the tri-state area have been driving up to Greene County, a three hour drive, buying temporary generators for $4-500 and then selling them for $2500 in NYC and NJ.
Lowe’s can’t keep plastic gas containers in stock. People have been buying the store’s entire inventory, filling them up with gas and then selling them for $20 in the city.
Two customers from LI were ion the store looking for gas tanks, batteries and generators.
While driving home ( the scenic route) I saw several gas stations with lines of a dozen cars per pump, a rare site up here.
This is nuts.
this is a terrible story. Those people are carpet baggers. They are profiting from the misery of others. Shame on them for what they are doing.
capitalism at work – to the benefit of the entrepreneur & recipients, and the anger of the big-government and unions.
I was starting to seep in the doom vortex with this report and others I’ve read, thinking the chaos in NY might postpone the election.
But I don’t see all the states agreeing to a postponement just because NY and NJ do not have power and/or order established enough to hold elections. And if O tries it by fiat, he’s toast. Welcome to Seven Days in November. And a great sucking sound as all the dollar-is-the-last-safe-haven investment money from foreign investors starts being shuffled to other countries because we have just announced to the world we are a banana republic. Banksters are not going to let that happen. The affected states can reschedule election day up until Dec. 11, six days before the Electoral College meets.
But it will be a moot point, because Romney’s margin of victory in the Electoral College will be greater than 43, the combined tallies of NY and NJ and we will know that by at least 10 pm EST. Keep believing it. It won’t matter if they vote later or take until Dec 11 to vote because they turned away non-union crews from Alabama who came up nawth to help those ungrateful yankees. We will still celebrate on Tuesday.
Once and for all, there will be NO postponement of the elections. Anyone who tries to convince you there will be is either an idiot or a provacateur. Tell such people to go screw themselves. Tell them your time is too valuable to waste on listening to such garbage.
If we had elections during the Civil War, the Great Depression, and World War II, we will damn sure have them after a damn storm.
I should say ungrateful yankee union thugs.
I’m sure that if this happens, the media will be quick to point out that Bloomberg is a Republican, even though he really isn’t.
If this happens, I’m sure the media will be quick to point out that Bloomberg is a “Republican”, even though he really isn’t.
Marathons have water stations set up every couple of miles. I expect them to be robbed.
Bloomberg is a bigger fool than Ray Nagin.
A colleague of mine lives on Staten Island and was flooded out. No power and no access to news. When I texted her that race was going to be run, she replied that that was the first time she cried.
I don’t think people have to worry about Obama delaying the elections, he actually has no say in that process. I believe it is done by the Senate, which could be bad, or the House. If set by the House we really don’t have to worry about a delay.
As for the runners coming to NY, I feel sorry for them. I bet most of them have no clue what the situation is like there, especially if they watch the mainstream media which is reporting rainbows and unicorn farts; just like they always do with bad news for Obama.
That is a good point. I imagine if the media actually reported the facts instead of trying to cover up problems, many of the people who traveled to NY for the marathon would have stayed home. Also, anyone would think that if the city government thought that things had improved enough to hold a marathon, then in fact things would have actually improved.
Bad choices all around.
Good news, hopefully: recently heard on FOX that the race may have to be cancelled because sponsors are pulling out (as they should.)
I can’t donate to NY/NJ relief efforts as my money is non-union.
Kevin,
this article confirms what you are saying

Mike Memoli (LA Times DC Bureau) via twitter: “Friend in the NYPD says NYC marathon canceled.”
The Marathon is canceled.
65,000 customers in the Lower East Side of Manhattan get their power on.
Kevin, just spotted this over at Drudge

It actually says the event has now been cancelled. Regardless Bloomberg is a real douchebag
Current subway recovery map. Many NYC subway lines back online. Shuttle bus service provided to cross rivers from Brooklyn to lower Manhattan. Bus service in many boroughs running. More subway lines to come back on as electricity is restored.

Thank God we don’t have to wait a whole year for our service to come back on!
cancelled! http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57544624/nyc-marathon-canceled-amid-outcry/
Kevin,
Great job, as usual.
For anyone who wants to help, I suggest that you take a look at Team Rubicon: this is a GREAT organization of (mostly) veterans who put “boots on the ground” to help folks. TR was formed during/after the earthquake in Haiti, and does some fantastic work, both in the US and abroad.
Full disclosure….I led the second wave of TR folks in to Haiti, and spent 4 1/2 months down there.
TR is an example of the true American spirit…
Kevin,
I forgot and used my real name in the previous post about TR….use it if you must, but if you can, PLEASE use my screen “handle” of The One Eyed Jack!
Thanks,
G–
