URGENT ACTION ITEM: How to find a list of union vs. non-union stores so people can choose which to support

Posted on September 5, 2011 by Kevin DuJan // Action Items, Blue Team - Research, Hillbuzz, The Left, Unions

Here is a fantastic Labor Day Project that could be of immense value to all of us.

Can you help find a list of union vs. non-union stores so that we can all choose where we want to spend our money?

I would shop exclusively at non-union stores in a heartbeat if I had a list of companies to evaluate.

This means not staying in union hotels when traveling, not buying groceries from union-stocked shelves, not going anywhere near labor unions whenever possible.

If the Labor Unions have declared war on Republicans and have now pledged to serve as Obama’s Goon Squad and Thug Army in 2012…why give the Unions any more of your hard earned money by shopping in stores that help fund the unions?

Why not support companies who have fought hard to keep Democrats’ thuggery out of their stores so that none of your money ever falls into the DNC’s hands?

Have you ever seen a list of companies that are non-union?

Is there a comprehensive listing of all grocery stores, hotel chains, restaurants, clothing stores, etc. that are non-union so people can start reevaluating where they shop every day to avoid union stores as much as possible?

Wegmans is non-union grocery store. It's found mostly in the northeast, in NY and more recently in NJ and PA and, and is slowly expanding to Maryland, Massachusetts and Virginia.

Publix Super Markets down in the southeast is non-union, and the nicest grocery store in my part of Florida (Tampa Bay area), by far. Polite, friendly employees who, by company policy, escort you to an item if you ask them where to find something. Also, by company policy, tipping employees who help you carry groceries to your car is forbidden. Great store!

That is not true, Julian. Publix has a very liberal coupon policy and many BOGO items per week. You may use a store coupon and a manufacturer’s coupon for the same item, enabling smart shoppers to save hundreds of dollars on a single order. For those of you who like your privacy, they do not require the use of a loyalty card, instead passing along any savings to anyone who cares to buy the item. In response to the economy, Publix has dropped prices on many items, especially items people frequently use. Because of this, their profit margin has lowered, but sales are up anyway because prices are so good. The UFCW has targeted Publix because of their non-union stance, so if you want to support a non-union company, shop Publix! For the record, I worked for Publix for 20 of the last 25 years and recently retired to start my own business.

Well Julian, if what you're saying is true, then I guess Publix will soon go out of business, right? If their prices are above market price, then the system will take care of it. Yes, you're right, I will go and shop at various stores. I will go to non-union stores and I will also examine their prices. Gee, freedom of choice is really what it is about!

I know in Washington State, all grocery stores are part of the Food Worker’s Union, anybody who has to deal with food apparently. I know because I was required to join a Union when I worked as a Cashier at Fred Meyer. One of the reasons why I quit after working a holiday season in fact. Don’t know if they are still like that or not. Hop the border to Idaho is a right to work state.

Please enjoy your new life as a hermit recluse… oh, wait, I'm betting your home was built by union members, so I guess you'd better move out.

Guess it's a good thing the homeless don't have a union.

Frontier Airlines & Jet Blue come to mind — I drive Fords (they refused the bail out), local family resturants are fine, wear Oshkohs, have a garden, watch stuff on Internet, and stopped going to the movies when Hollywood decided to write their own agenda, (and strike).

Why would the homeless need a union, they have the government. Many of the homeless are mentally ill and do not get the treatment they need because by law, you can not force them into treatment. So don't throw the homeless under the bus, they are truly in need of help.

Fed Ex non-union but cost more to ship through them than the Uninonized USPS. Blows your theory right out of the water that Union products cost more. In non-union places, they charge the same or more and the CEO’s pocket the money instead of treating their hard working employees…DOWN WITH GREEDY CORPORATIONS!

The entire validity of your argument is destroyed by the fact that the USPS loses billions of dollars per year. The USPS is not a viable entity without forced taxpayer subsidy. If the USPS had to charge what it actually cost them to ship items around the country, they would never be cheaper than FedEx.

The second problem with your argument is that your facts are flat out wrong. Only SOME items are cheaper to ship through USPS. FedEx is cheaper on other items. So it’s not a black-and-white proposition to begin with.

Finally, the USPS also has a government-mandated monopoly on mail service (don’t you anti-corporation types abhor monopolies?). Were UPS and FedEx allowed to compete for mail service, it would drive down the cost of shipping smaller packages because trips to any given locale would be far more profitable than if you just have to deliver a single package to some outlying neighborhood.

Without unions, there would be more corporations employing more people in America right now.

Unions devastated my hometown of Cleveland, drove all the manufacturing businesses overseas, and caused the unemployment and financial devastation of what was once the 8th largest city in the country.

Unions did the same thing to Pittsburgh, Detroit, and other former manufacturing cities.

Unions are a bane to this country because the unions are only interested in enriching the union leaders at the expense of union members, and then extorting companies for funds that are redistributed to the Democrat Party so that unions can be foisted on taxpayers in the public sector too.

A hundred years ago, maybe unions were needed, but they are needed no more and in fact do far more harm than good.

    May I offer perspective?

Most unionized companies never set out to be unionized, and many wouldn't if they had a practical choice. To boycott unionized firms is to punish them twice – once through the boycott, and once through the expense and difficulty that come with unionization.

Unionized businesses would effectively force themselves out of business if they tried to repudiate their unions, so they'd have no choice but to ignore an anti-union boycott. It's your choice, but it's not likely to be a productive course of action.

          Bonhomme,

Obama once said he brings guns to knife fights.

Obama told Hispanics last year to punish their enemies by voting Democrat.

Obama injects the Race Card into public debate as often as possible — a great example of this is when, without any facts, he labeled the Cambridge police department stupid and racist before he was informed his good friend, the notorious race-baiter Henry Gates, was in the wrong in an instance where Gates yet again screamed RAAACISM where there is none.

Obama’s Justice Department, on Obama’s orders, dropped prosecution of the Black Panthers for intimidating voters because Obama approves of this uncivility and these bullying tactics at polling places.

Obama is the least civil and most petulant chief executive this nation has seen in a very long time. His willful combination of arrogance and ignorance has driven this country into a Depression all of his making.

Obama and the Democrat Party he recreated in his own image has shown nothing but contempt for those Obama called in 2008 “the bitter, guns-and-religion-clinging, Midwesterners”.

Obama learned all of his expletives and his contempt for Americans sitting in Jeremiah Wright’s Trinity United Church for 20 years, where he chose to expose his two young children to that garbage.

So it’s no wonder those who follow Obama share his behavior, and Obama himself reflects theirs.

Not all unions are created equal. Many provide a valued voice for the individual worker who would otherwise have very little say in the way business operates. The more sophisticated the skills of the worker, the more education required for the job, the better equiped is the employee to obtain a decent living wage and good working conditions. In the less educated work force, there is a clear imbalance in the negotiation power with mega-corporations.

I am a non-unionized manager in a unionized outfit. The union understands that seniority is not a guarantee of merit for promotions, and has agreed with demonstrated skills and competence as the deciding factor. It vigilently looks at decisions on salary policies, pension plan and benefit decisions, and it is represented on the pension and benefits steering committees. In disciplinary cases I led on employees, the union has actually properly advised the employee with problem behavior. Our organization respects the union and we are the better for it.

Follow-up: The union in my outfit is much more responsible than the CEOs of big financial institutions who brought their companies and the world in 2008 to the brink (or beyond) of bankruptcy by taking unacceptable risks with other people's money, and selling toxic assets to pension funds across the world. Still, after they had to be bailed out by main street, they still claimed their huge multi-million bonuses… and this, without having deserved them. They earn far more than is justified by any decent merit system. They hold the money and the power. Without the existence of unions, and the small balance of power held by unions, the disparity would be even worse.

bohhomme – your class warfare and envy are showing their true colors. It wasn't the CEOs who brought us to the brink. It was members of the DNC who demanded that these institutions make loans to those who can't pay them. To sweeten the deal after the collapse, these financial institutions received agreement that they would be bailed out. So, please don't waste your electrons trying to tell me that the government was not complicit in this. It will not fly anymore. If you don't like them to claim their bonuses, then demand the board of directors fire the CEO. If you don't like a certain company's business practice, then persuade others against doing business with them. Do business with those that you like. No one forced you. You are not to judge but the market is to judge how much someone should make. You earn what you're willing to risk. I don't agree with your "workers of the world unite" because this attitude has arrested any progress in our education, our government, and has smothered the desire for smart, innovative people to take risks.

I might agree with what you say about CEOs, but only if you would put the heads of the unions and their upper management into your indictment. After all, (D) Obama sold out the teachers union pension funds to Imminent Domain grab Chrysler and GM, so he could fund the UAW pension funds and give about 1/3 of the new stock to the UAW.

BTW, it is to laugh, when Obama (who is not a Muslim) said he was taking over these car companies so these American companies could be saved, and then he and his car czar sold Chrysler to the Italians. Maybe you can't see through the lies, but I'm not so blind.

So, back to your whine, the CEOs are fat cats who exploit the workers. Golly! That sounds like Trumka, Hoffa, et cetera.

Do you think those regulations will remain in place without lobbying from unions, if the only lobbying left is from the mega-corporations? Savage deregulation has already taken place in the US. Countries with a better regulatory framework, such as Canada, fared much better during the financial meltdown of 2008. It is essential to maintain a balance of lobbying power if we are not going to give multinational corporations huge tax breaks in reward for exporting jobs to cheaper labor markets. Employment-related tax incentives, linked to offering decent living wages, are the fiscal incentives needed to keep jobs.

Of course the regulations will stay in place. The unions, however, are driving away the jobs making the regulations moot. All over Cleveland, as just one example, there are empty abandoned warehouses and shuttered factories where businesses once employed hundreds of thousands of people. Those jobs are now overseas because the unions made doing this work in America untenable.

Regulations are now regulating ghost towns.

The unions a very long time ago once served a purpose…if they had stopped with the safety regulations and the efforts needed to create a reasonable workplace, things would be fine today. Instead, the unions became corrupt. Where they used to stand up for the little guy against the big bad evil expoitative companies, the unions — once they beat the companies — then became the corrupt, big bad oppressors themselves.

Today, the public sector unions exploit and oppress tax payers. The unions in the private industrial world exploit and oppress job-seekers, who would have jobs if not for the union’s greed and corruption. Labor unions own private resorts, golf courses, hotels, and posh accommodations for their top executives. There is no reason for this, and if the unions were in fact still focused on protecting workers, they would not be wasting all this money on such extravagances. Every dime would be going towards efforts to protect workers, not towards extravagances to indulge people like Jimmy Hoffa Jr.

Within the next 5-10 years, I really and truly believe the American public is going to see just how much damage the unions have done. And the unions are going to receive one heck of a blowback when that happens.

Mr. Hoffa better enjoy those golf courses and the Obama-esque lifestyle he’s grown accustomed to, because it’s not going to be there for a Jimmy Hoffa III.

If you're serious about boycotting union businesses, you'll have to stop watching Fox news – it's a union shop (as are all news networks). Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity are both union members as well.

Seriously, don't stop watching Fox. But realize that unionization is typically a coercive transaction. Union leaders really don't care if you boycott the businesses they organize. They don't care if you put their members out of work. Supporting candidates who share your views is what matters. Boycotting unionized businesses is pointless window dressing. All the name calling in the world doesn't change that fact.

If I have a choice between spending my money at a union shop or a business that is non-unionized, Steve, I am going to choose to spend my money at the non union shop.

I never called for a boycott of anything: that exists solely in your own imagination.

Please read the title of this thread. Read it a few times, carefully. It is calling for a list of union vs. non-union stores so people can choose which to support.

      Read that again, Steve.

“A list of union vs. non-union stores so people can choose which to support”.

I am going to compile this list of union vs. non-union stores so I can choose to support non-union businesses whenever possible. I never once used the word boycott anywhere. I never said I would not use a union business if that was the only option.

I said I am seeking to build a list of union vs. non-union businesses so that I can CHOOSE where to spend my money, and wherever possible I firmly intend to give my business to non-union shops.

I want to make sure that as few pennies as possible on what I spend to feed, clothe, and otherwise provide myself ever end up in the hands of the unions. That is my choice, just as it is your own choice to spend your money at union businesses.

As a consumer, I want the option to be able to factor non-union vs. union into my decision-making because it is important to me.

        I agree with Kevin.
The two grocery stores closest to my house are Giant and Safeway, both unionized.
Food Lion, WalMart, and others are non-union. When I happen to be near them, I will now shop there. If I'm near home, I will save gas and shop at the union stores.
        No boycott, just informed shopping.

How about if we let people decide, at the time they get hired, if they want to opt out of the union? Did any of the folks at Fox News, get this choice? or was joining a union a condition of employment, as well as paying Union dues & fees?

BTW, what is the going rate of Union dues/fees these days? What do you pay each month? and what percent of your monthly gross is it?

      Homer,

You’re really following Obama’s orders and consistent example with the name calling you engage in. And you, too, also haven’t read either the title or content of this thread.

This is about CHOOSING a non-union option over a union option wherever a non-union option is available.

This is about a consumer having a choice, and that consumer CHOOSING to look for non-union alternatives to spend his money on.

If you can’t understand that, or if you have trouble reading, then maybe you should hit the books and improve your understanding before you start name-calling.

It’s very interesting, though, folks that union acolytes and Obama supporters always engage in name-calling and personal attacks without every reading or understanding something before lashing out.

Kevin, I hope that you're able to find a non-union cop when you're being gay-bashed or a non-union firefighter when your Madame Alexander doll collection is ablaze. I also hope that you have front-row seats to a re-enactment of the Triangle Factory fire (complete with anguished screams and burning flesh) and that you enjoy wearing cashmere socks made in a sweatshop by a kid for pennies a day. I also hope that you enjoy the women in your life getting paid less money for the same work by Wal-Mart, where they HAVE to work because Wal-Mart drove all the small businesses out of town. When Ayn Rand got where she was going, I'm pretty sure she discovered that Hell is cold. And a haircutter's union worker would never allow you to leave their shop with a combover. Just a point or two to ponder.

        Doug –

Why are Obama voters so afraid of people having the ability to choose between spending their money in a union store or spending it in a non-union store?

Why are so many of these people attacking me for wanting to make a list so I can choose to spend my money in non-union businesses?

Why are they so threatened by people taking the time to gather information and inform themselves so they can better choose where they spend their very limited resources?

I honestly am willing to go out of my way to back non-union businesses. I will walk an extra 30 minutes and probably spend a little more to do it too. I just need to get the information to plan my life so I can choose to support as many non-union businesses as I can.

Do you see the irony in all this too? Isn’t the Left always screaming about choice when it comes to a wedge issue like abortion…but people are not allowed to make a choice between non-union and union stores.

I choose to shop non-union and Obama voters should celebrate my ability to make that choice!

That means SEEING them firsthand and maybe experiencing them for himself. Can't very well do that if you're dead, can you? There was no gay bashing in my post. But there's a LOT in non-union shops and professions.

Betty Crocker, duuude! You should chill-out!

Here in (D) controlled Maryland, WalMart has stores, but they have hardly driven the competition out of town. I see lots of people working there, and in their competitor stores.

Maybe in some small towns, where unions don't have a toe-hold, WalMart can put the mom & pop stores out of business, but there are laws against predatory pricing, so they can be sued by class action lawyers like John Edwards, who got filthy rich while his clients got tiny checks. Kind of like union bosses who make big bucks and own country clubs and golf courses, while the union worker gets little more than a beer keg, TV and a pool table at the Union Hall.

Here in Southern Californian the grocery stores are ready to go on strike yet again. When they did it the last time people flocked to Trader Joes and other nonunion stores. The union stores never have fully recovered and this is going to make some of them close their doors. Unions have wrecked the Southern CA economy and infrastructure. Now that we have idiot Brown back in office we can expect to see this state sink further into the swill that Democrats like Waters, Pelosi have taken it to. The idiots never learn and want to continue to tax us to death to fund their pet projects.

The only thing the police need protecting from are criminals, and unions seem to spawn more of those than other labor arrangements. In truth, no public union is required for any of these basic functions.

What has unionization ever done to protect police anyway? Any time I hear a Democrat here speak in MA about cutbacks, it's always the police and fire that are on the chopping block. Fat lot of good having a union did them, they're still the first casualty of big government, with the greatest irony being the money they preserve for the welfare class subsidizes the crimes that class commits. I sincerely doubt the compensation for police and fire would fall in absolute terms if the union were abolished, it'd jut be harder to play these stupid games where elected officials threaten the funding of public safety and the union issues a statement condemning it, then caves to each demand.

It's pretty obvious that you are ill-informed on this issue. But pointing out flaws in how unions work is not support for an argument doing away with them. There are flaws in how hospitals, schools and public works departments are run. Should we have witchdoctors, FOX television and dirt roads instead? Ask a cop who was asked to do something illegal by a captain and was demoted for refusing to do it what the union did for him. Ask a gay firefighter who was harrassed what the union did for him. If you can't get to one, google those terms and read about it. Then get back to us when you have a clue from the clue bag.

Hey Betty, I don't get my info from Wiki — and California has the highest unemployment — all those Apple products you love to hug, are wait for it, MADE IN CHINA! — All manufacturing jobs are leaving California, in droves — and those engineers at Apple, Google, Silicon Valley, are NOT union — nope, they are too smart for that.

Your arguments as sooo easy to pick apart, like a 2-year-old not realizing sound travels. And you wonder why I don't want to buy union products? Duh!

I have a union admin that is great, and you know what, I can't do anything for him, no raise, nada — no way to reward him for going that extra step. What I can do, is make training available to him, so he can move up one step, out of the union, and THEN I could get him a merit raise. The union ties my hands —

Gay firefighter's really, thats your argument? And dirty cops? Please, change the channel and watch PBS or Discovery Channel —

That's the point – what Kevin is asserting is happening is NOT happening. No one is afraid of his choices – we just think his stated basis for them is profoundly stupid and ill-informed. That's it. If that hurts your pwecious fee-fees, too bad. (If you don't like condescencion, don't earn it by sniveling. It's pathetic – not even emotionally intelligent, let alone an rational analysis of facts and circumstances.) As to bigotry – take off your sweatshop-made Official Tea Party Sweatshirt calling Obama a "Secrete Muslin", pick up a book, learn that "secrete" means "ooze" and "Muslin" is a type of fabric. Then take a shower. After that, we'll talk about the bigotry of you and of Kevin.

I love how Obama voters have to name call repeatedly to make any sort of point.

You clearly learned that from Obama himself. When you don’t have anything to say of value, get Alinsky on people.

Meanwhile, I choose not to shop at a union store when I can find a non-union alternative. The fewer unions in my life, the better. The less I can spend in union shops, the better too.

You can do what you want Thom, but you and the other Obama voters need to stop thinking you can make others do what you say. Obama is out of office in 2013 with an awful lot of the Left leaving power with him, so the unions are going to be in an awful lot of trouble very soon.

Something tells me there will be many, many more non-union businesses to shop in the very near future.

Again, Kevin – good luck when you do need a union member. (Most people will, at one time or another.) And there was no name calling. Did they not teach reading comprehension in Cleveland?

I'm perfectly fine with you doing whatever you like, Kevin. Please stop wallowing in victimology – no one is trying to make you do anything. You just should know what your choices look like and have to live with their consequences. Since you seem willing to do the latter, it's just the former that's an issue. Your life will not be better without public unions, and the lives of blue-collar workers or kids in sweatshops won't be either.

It's a Tea Party trait to offer opinion without substantiation and without analysis. Good luck with that in life.

Instead of making plans where you intend to somehow try to make fun of the autistic, why don’t you start planning what you are going to do on Election Night in 2012 when Obama is defeated and the Left is banished into exile for another 30 years. Try and make fun of the Tea Party all you want Thom, but the Tea Party will be the dominant force in American politics for a generation or two to come.

Are you stupid? unions were created to protect the rights of people that work hard for their money. Their protected from being treated unfairly or not being paid enough. If companies treated their employees correctly, stopped being greedy and paid them correctly then wouldn't cost people billions in taxes. The world doesn't revolve around money the people in this world how we carry ourselves, our values, emotions, thought process and how we treat each other is what makes it spin.
And the fact that people are dying for ridiculous reasons that people are starving or out in the cold is a perfect example of our own selfishness. The more people act like enemies like republicans and democrats the harder its gonna be for for future generations. when people realize that well be in the right direction, there's no such thing as a utopia and everyone isnt gonna follow the rules but they way people treat each other is disgusting and the world would be better if people opened their eyes and took a look at the world….sorry this got a little off topic read this or don't if you like and if this gets removed then fine but you all need a reality check and im only 14.
