Yesterday afternoon, something equal parts scary and amazing happened here at Buzzquarters that completely changed my impression of Chase Bank. Around noon, we got a text that there had been a suspicious charge of $86 or so made in a retail establishment and Chase wanted to know if I had approved the charge. I haven’t used my Chase credit card in months and almost never buy anything in brick-and-mortar retailers anymore; almost everything I buy is through Amazon.com since I work at home and love the convenience of the UPS guy brining me everything I need without me having to trek to a Target or wherever on trains or buses. I followed the directions and texted back to Chase that I didn’t approve the charge and was immediately connected to a fraud prevention operator in India. She was incredibly difficult to understand but was very nice on the phone; normally, I hang up on Indian call centers and try again in a few hours when maybe someone in Texas or the Philippines will answer the phone but since there was fraud being committed with my card I talked to her.
She told me that someone in California was trying to charge a bunch of things at a Wal-Mart and asked me if I knew anything about that (which I didn’t). It turns out whoever was doing this actually had a cloned card with my account on it…and this was the first time they tried to use it, apparently. Chase fraud prevention caught it because a sudden charge in California at Wal-Mart looked suspicious, since I had no activity on the card for a long time and I don’t have a habit of using that card in California or in stores like Wal-Mart.
In the past, I’ve actually hated Chase because they have turned my credit card off before when I’ve been on trips…and all of a sudden the card doesn’t work because the fraud system thought something unusual was happening. After being embarrassed like that while out to dinner once on a road trip, I started calling Chase and having them make a note on my account whenever Justin and I are going out of town…so that we don’t have problems when I try to use my card across state lines.
Today’s the first day I’m actually glad that the fraud detectors at Chase are so sensitive…because whoever cloned that credit card was stopped before any damage at all was done to me. Chase closed down that account and generated a new card number for me and is overnighting it to me today, so I’m not inconvenienced at all. I was really impressed with the whole experience (even if I would have rather been talking to Texas, not Mumbai, on the phone).
I wonder if anyone knows how criminals go about cloning credit cards anyway. I’m someone who sees those identity theft commercials on tee-vee and reads all these stories about this stuff happening…but I always thought it was being exaggerated, the way the news turns an average thunderstorm into a “Storm of the Century!” just to drive ratings. But, I honestly don’t do risky things online or use my cards at questionable places…and, yet, someone still was able to clone my credit card and attempt to use it thousands of miles away. So, I do know this does in fact happen.
I’d love any insight anyone out there might have on this.
Let’s celebrate “Pride Month” by having an open and honest discussion about lies the media keeps telling you about gay people in this country! This is one of those things I do as a public service that no doubt will piss all sorts of people off and slam my inbox with vinegary hatemail, but I’m just tired of the media lying all the time and this is something we can do as friends to counter all that.
I’ve really been enjoying the questions you are submitting about the activities of the “gay community” and its leadership. Please keep them coming, because I actually learn a lot when people outside Boystown tell me the things that bother or perplex them about gays they see in the media or read about wherever. I think this is a good thing to do in the month of June, since the media will be pushing the narrative that gays are such victims and that Christians and conservatives are so evil for being mean to them all the time…when I’ve been telling you for years that the exact opposite is true. I’m someone who has never been treated poorly at all by Christians for being gay…but I am attacked nonstop by gays for being proudly Christian. This is the exact opposite of what the tee-vee and newspapers would lead you to believe.
1. QUESTION: “Do most GLBT people not realize the impending dangers to them as a community were marxism or islam (never both, regardless of who our president is) to become the dominant political ideology? Especially given that neither worldview has ever been particularly kind to GLBT people when in force, and given that both are totalitarian and collectivist, and therefore incompatible with the western freedom that allows gay pride parades, “The new normal” and George Michael music videos?”
ANSWER: Well, the first thing you need to understand here is that the gay people who are screaming and yelling about things are very low-information and unthinking; they tend to just parrot what they see on the tee-vee, especially if people like Anderson Cooper or Rachel Maddow say it. Gays tend to latch onto one or two, maybe three, figures on tee-vee and follow those people on Twitter or Facebook or whatever; they actually no longer physically watch the news…but they do hear little quips that circulate on social media. It’s a status symbol to talk about the latest thing that Anderson Cooper or Rachel Maddow or (sometimes) Chris Matthews said because that’s how you prove in a gay clique that you are all edumacated about the issues…because not only do you know what Anderson, Rachel, or Chris said…but you agree with them completely. About whatever it is they said.
Gay bars like Sidetrack the Video Bar in Boystown are the hub for indoctrination in big cities when it comes to gay people being told what to think or say. At places like this, Anderson Cooper, Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews and just a handful of others are presented as all-knowing oracles who must be obeyed and never criticized. To a similar extent, Jon Stewart is up there too…but only when he is saying things that those other people mentioned agree with. Sometimes Stewart goes off the reservation and actually says things critical of the Left…and then he’s just ignored and not talked about until he’s back to making fun of conservatives, Christians, and Republicans. The Daily Show and Saturday Night Live are frequently mined for sketches and little video clips that can be used to hammer home the message to gay people that THIS IS HOW YOU MUST THINK!…and anyone who thinks differently is harassed, mocked, and persecuted. A popular gay bar like Sidetrack that blasts these clips over and over to the drunken gays who frequent those places succeeds in drilling these talking points into everyone.
And, sadly, very few gay people ever stop to wonder if any of the propaganda is true…and they never wonder if Anderson Cooper, Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, or Jon Steward are lying to them. There’s a lot of social pressure and fear of being ostracized that prevents a lot of these guys from thinking outside the gay box. They’ve seen people who tried to leave the gay reservation be brutalized by the “gay community leaders” and they don’t want to end up like them. So, they toe the line because they want to keep enjoying the male strippers in the bars and the free drinks that come along with going to a place like Sidetrack that plays the propaganda on its screens…because that’s a price guys are willing to pay for the free alcohol that accompanies the propaganda.
Christians are depicted as the greatest villains of all time to gays, with the Gaystapo high command of “community leaders” declaring that Christian institutions must be destroyed as much as possible. Some lesbian went on tee-vee over the weekend saying that she wants “gay marriage” to pass because it both weakens the Church and traditional families…and I think there are a lot of subversives who do things like complain about Christmas trees or nativity displays in the War Against Christian Holidays in order to further undermine and weaken the Church. Gays love having an enemy, and the gay community leaders know that unless gays are focused on an enemy they will just go off into a million different directions (because dealing with gays is like herding cats if you don’t have a colorful and epic enemy to focus on).
Catholics take the most fire from gays because the Catholic Church is such a distinct entity and because it has a readily identifiable leader and other members who wear uniforms that gays can lampoon easily. Quick, name a major Protestant figure that is internationally known. I can’t, and my boyfriend Justin is some kind of Protestant. I don’t even know what kind. Protestantism is too nebulous for gays to villainize…so from a marketing and brand awareness standpoint the Gaystapo has made Catholics enemy number one because they can mock the Pope easily, they can dress up in drag as “Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence”, they can parade around on Halloween dolled up as priests or bishops or whatever chasing after other guys dressed as altar boys…etc.
You need to remember that 90% of what gay guys do is very similar to how spoiled children behave. Gay guys never grow up, and a lot of the humor in the “gay community” is immature and malicious…but it’s excused away because gays are protected residents on the Democrats’ plantation. The narrative the media sticks to is that gays are the victims and Christians are the persecutors….so if gays want to “blow off steam” by mocking religious people, well, then they are entitled to!
The reason gays never dare say a bad word about Islam is that they are afraid of being killed by Muslims. In all the years I have lived in Chicago, I have never seen Sidetrack the Video Bar play a single video that is critical of Islam…but its Thursday “Comedy Nights” are peppered with frequent attacks on the Catholic Church and Christians in general. That’s because men like Art Johnston who run bars such as Sidetrack know that Catholics are never going to retaliate against him no matter what he says to mock their faith or degrade Jesus Christ. But, Johnston and the reset of the Gaystapo are TERRIFIED of getting onto Muslims’ radars and experiencing a fatwa or jihad at the hands of “The Religion of Peace”.
Gays bash Christians because they know they can get away with it…and they steer clear of ever criticizing Islam for anything because they are too scared that a Muslim will bomb, behead, brutalize, or do other horrible things to them…as “The Religion of Peace” consistently does all around the world.
As a member of the community, I can tell you that gay people are very stupid when it comes to Islam. They listen to the tee-vee and they just accept without question the rationalization that Islam is “just a religion like any other”…and they accept the Koran as a peer to the Bible or the Torah (which it most certainly is not). Very few gays understand that the Koran is setup so that any of the “peaceful poetry” that the Left likes to cite when promoting Islam is superseded by the violent exhortations to war and conquest that come later in the Koran. The Bible and the Torah do not work this way…and also do not advocate violent conquest of the world through any means necessary, the way the Koran does.
Gays are largely fools because they just buy into all the Left’s thinking without question…and the Left depends on gays remaining this ignorant so they can be useful idiots in the Culture Wars. The Left sides with Islam because both are enemies of Christianity…and the two, together, share a lot of similar tactics and belief systems. If you really stop and think about it, things that Leftists do are very similar to things Muslims do…and the lot of them are all extremely patient and strategic and are willing to play a long game of chess while conservatives and Christians get distracted by daily life and family chores and take their eyes off the playing field.
I actually know young gay guys in Boystown who get recruited to fly to Dubai to serve as male prostitutes to Muslims…and make a LOT of money doing that for a few years, until they age out of those brothels. Surprisingly, they’re returned to the States after they get too old (which is about 28 or so…but definitely before they hit 30); I always wondered if they were afraid the Muslims would kill them or make them into slaves working on the construction projects there…but apparently their disappearances would cause too many problems (and the Muslims have acquired slave labor from Pakistan and a few Asian countries anyway). Blonde white boys in the slave camps surrounding Dubai’s construction projects would draw stares…so the gay male sex workers end up released back into the gay community with as much money as they could save while they were serving in Dubai.
You don’t need to imagine all that hard to guess that very few of these guys end up saving all that much money, though…or that doing this ends up really being worth it. These kids are train wrecks who get addicted to cocaine and usually catch HIV from the Muslim men they service over there…and then they return home to the reality that they are now too old to do what they wasted their 20s doing and they have no real idea what’s next for themselves. Let’s not kid ourselves and pretend these male prostitutes worked in Dubai to save up tuition money for business or law school.
2. Question: Here comes a question…why do so many gays assume I hate them solely because I have a reluctance to accept gay marriage?
ANSWER: They assume you hate them because these guys are taught by the “gay community leaders” that they are supposed to hate their enemies. You don’t agree with them on something, so you are thus defined as the enemy in their thinking. Since they hate you for being their enemy then they assume you must hate them right back. It’s a vicious cycle of flawed and twisted illogic.
The people responsible for this on the local level in a city are the gay bar owners and the people who churn out the gay magazines and newspapers in a town like Chicago. On a national level, this “hate our enemies!” mission is pushed by The Advocate, Genre, and other gay glossy magazines…and it’s encouraged by gays in Hollywood and the rest of the infotainment industry.
I always refer back to the book/movie 1984 with this stuff because it’s just such a great example of what’s really happening in the “gay community”: to control these people, the Gaystapo sets up various villains for gays to hate as “enemies of the community”…and then gays are taught to scream and yell and berate these enemies in any form in which they appear. George Bush is an enemy. The Pope is an enemy. Sarah Palin, Jan Brewer, and Michele Bachmann are enemies. Any priest or nun is an enemy. Any Republican is an enemy.
I, personally, get called a very special brand of enemy by the “gay community”…because they refer to me as a “quisling”, since I am a gay man who calls the gay community out on its bad behavior and who is thus a “traitor” in the eyes of the Gaystapo. These people have threatened and maligned me in every way imaginable for over five years now and I truly stopped caring or being surprised by any of it four and a half years ago.
While I do admit it was shocking to feel the furnace of Alinsky-grade hate directed at me at first…because I had never experienced anything like that before…I quickly saw that these people are all just bully and bluster. The only reason the institutional Left wins the Culture Wars is because conservatives are very easily scared into silence and also Republicans keep making the same stupid mistakes over and over again and never seem interested in learning anything about the Left’s inherent weaknesses.
3. QUESTION: I think that many gay activists had bad experiences with religion growing up, most notably the Catholic Church, and this is their way of getting even. I’m wondering if that is your read as well?
ANSWER: That’s not exactly how I see it. In my experience, the most rabid and hateful gays grew up Protestant, actually…or they were not religious as children at all. There are very few former or lapsed Catholics in the upper echelons of the Gaystapo…but there are a lot of little boys who grew up Baptist or Methodist or whatever or who were Jewish once upon a time. True Catholics might end up gay as grown men (like me), but I think the Catholic programming is always in us…and I think we still are too polite and nice at heart to ever be one of the big Gaystapo hate machines that you see screaming and yelling and carrying-on against the Church.
So, it’s not people who feel they were personally victimized by the Church…but rather people who see that the Catholic Church is a convenient and high-profile target for the Gaystapo. This makes a lot of sense, too, if you think about it…because a lot of Protestants grow up being taught to hate Catholics…so they have that predisposition of hating Catholics that then is twisted by “gay activism” to take it to a new level. I can talk personally about my boyfriend Justin’s mother, who is a Protestant of some type and a generally nice woman…but there’s a brattiness and immaturity to her sometimes that comes through if I answer the phone and she feels an urge to take a dig at Catholics. If there’s something in the news or it’s a holiday or something, she’ll always do this…and I know she’s just tickled with herself all day that she said something nasty to a Catholic. Justin has some of this in him too, and I just let him do his thing because it’s not worth having a fight and ruining our day just because I’d like him to stop doing obnoxious things his mother taught him to do.
When I was in Catholic high school, my senior year religion teacher actually warned us all that Protestants would behave like this…especially ones form rural areas. It seems to be a cultural thing, which is really at odds with Christianity itself. But there is a hatred of Catholics amongst many in Protestant ranks…of which I can attest to through Justin’s parents.
I just see that pettiness and brattiness ratcheted up to whole new levels by the Gaystapo. Everything they say is just parroting what they hear others say. And then there’s the guys who insist on making a spectacle at Halloween or Mardi Gras or whenever, by dressing up in vulgar costumes that are meant to malign Catholics. They think this is hilarious but I see it as so very immature. And I note that these guys would never, ever, not in a million years dress up in outfits that mock Islam. They are not dressing up as a deformed and disfigured pedophile such as Muhammad…because they’d be scared of a Muslim physically hurting them for it. Maybe even beheading them in the street or otherwise murdering them. But, dressing up as a drunken Pope or a pregnant, alcoholic nun is just fine with 90% of the “gay community”.
The ultimate reason for this is that gays know Catholics in particular won’t do anything back…and are thus ripe for bullying. I am not a psychologist, but I’ve read enough through the years to know that people who convince themselves they are marginalized often seek out others who are even weaker than them…and then they work through their anger and other feelings by being evil to this weaker group.
Since Christians do not stand up to bullying, they are perceived as weak…and that is why they make an ideal target for gays.
4. Question: The other day, on the Liberace thread, you mentioned something about, if he’d been straight he probably would have been a truck driver. I’m not sure I would take that literally – there are plenty of men who are creative and have creative careers who are straight – but what do you make of the seeming link between creativity (or excellence in particular fields) and being gay?
ANSWER: This comment is about a piece I did on Liberace last week, because the Behind the Candelabra movie had come out on HBO. I was doing a joke on the fact that Rock Hudson, before he was discovered as a movie star, was a truck driver. And if he hand’t been picked up by that talent agent he would have been a truck driver for the rest of his life. It’s ridiculous to think of Lee Liberace driving a truck…but he was the son of Polish immigrants growing up in Wisconsin. If he had not been gay and interested in the piano, there’s a good chance he would have gone to work in a factory or driven a truck himself instead of becoming Liberace!.
I do believe that his being gay and him becoming the great showman and pianist are linked. He could have been gay without becoming the great piano player but I’d argue that he could never become the flamboyant success he was without being gay. There are a lot of variables that factored into his music career that were directly related to his being gay…and I think they were the secrets of his success:
* since he was not sexually attracted to women, he could cultivate a female fan base in ways different from straight male performers…which meant no broken hearts, stories about womanizing, or ever being seen as a “bad boy”…like Elvis Presley kind of was. It’s weird to think about, but Liberace and Elvis were contemporaries but they filled differently niches. I swear that’s not any entendre of any kind. But, Liberace was a safe, non-threatening, musical character who was interesting and whom girls never had to be afraid would carry them off and have his way with them…the way that Elvis would. Clearly, Elvis appealed to women in one way…and Liberace appealed to his fans in another. And ironically enough, Liberace’s fan base remained devoted to him much longer and never abandoned him for The Beatles or the Rolling Stones or Hendrix or whomever.
* being gay could have made Liberace less likely to want to be out roughhousing and playing sports and doing things that would take him away from his piano. I know it’s true that some gay guys are really into sports, but it’s honestly a minority…and the stereotype is more true than not that the only balls gay guys care about are, well…anyway. I have a hard time watching sports or playing any kind of game like soccer or whatever. I’ve done it when I had to, but I would have rather been doing anything else. Justin’s the same way. 80% of my gay friends and exes are like this. But I have had one or two boyfriends in the past that love softball and hockey or whatever. But, I’ve noticed that those guys who are really into sports aren’t into reading or art or creating things as much as those who aren’t into sports are. Humans are fascinating creatures with all sorts of reasons behind a lot of things we do…but I do believe that it’s a rare find to encounter a gay guy who just loves playing sports and who is also well-read, artistic, a great musician, etc. If you ever meet that guy, give him my number (don’t tell Justin, though).
* if he was straight, Liberace would have probably wanted a wife and family…which would have interfered with the trajectory of his career. Could he have been a straight pianist touring the country? Probably. Would he have been as successful and as interesting? I don’t think so, because being gay contributed to his campiness and really let him be a big star. If he was straight and dedicated himself to music (instead of truck driving) then maybe he would have played piano in a bar or even attempted to join an orchestra…but he would have not likely become a big, fabulous star out in Las Vegas.
I think being gay is part of a guy’s wiring…and that wiring makes a gay guy’s brain different…and in a lot of cases, that sort of “different” leads to a lot of great art, music, creativity, and (I hope) writing.
5. QUESTION: I have another question, it’s more of a hmmm but I’ve always been curious about it. I am not gay but my tastes tend toward Judy Garland, Dietrich, Bette Davis, watching Liza With a Z for the 17th time, etc. I even dragged hubby off to see Olivia Newton-John live (which he actually enjoyed.) A lot of legends are known today mostly in drag acts but that used to not be so. In the 20th century this was all considered general, family entertainment, which everyone in America enjoyed. Now it’s relegated to the gay interest bin. Why is this? There’s no cussing, no porn, no bashing, – it’s downright wholesome. So what is up with that?! I’m just wondering how & why squeaky clean oldies came to be associated & embraced by the gay crowd?
ANSWER: There’s a couple of things going on with this.
For starters, gay guys love glamorous women…especially ones from old movies who said really bitchy things or were just really quick-witted. It’s still true that Bette Davis and Joan Crawford are very popular in gay culture…and even guys Justin’s age and younger know who they are, even if they have never seen any of their movies (FYI, Justin is 26 and neither he nor any of his friends will EVER watch a movie or tee-vee show that is in black and white, not if their lives depended on it). Drag queens still love performing as these characters and a lot of jokes told in pop culture still refer to these old actresses.
I think gay bars and drag queens are what keeps these people popular in gay circles when straight people have moved onto something else. You don’t see drag queens really riffing all that much on the stars-of-the-moment…and drag seems to be about 20 or 30 years behind what’s popular on US Weekly or in People magazine or whatever. I think it just takes a while for things to “cook” enough for it to be campy.
Gays also tend to really like things that are retro and have been discarded by the straight world. It’s kind of a badge of honor to “rediscover” something classic and to make it cool again. Maybe that’s a bigger part of all this than I realized until just now…this desire for gays to rehabilitate something old and make it fresh and appealing again. Kind of like when gays move into a bad neighborhood and gentrify it.
I can tell you personally that this has worked wonders for Joan Crawford. She died before I was born…but I met Bette Davis as kid and she was delightful to me. I remember hearing about the Davis-Crawford feud in my teens and for many years I was all about Bette Davis. I still think she’s hilarious and interesting…but Joan Crawford’s having a revival, at least in Chicago. There’s a drag punk band called “The Joans” that dresses up as her…and the movie “Mommie Dearest” is shown every Mother’s Day in Chicago at this little theater called the Music Box, with one of the singers from “The Joans” dressed up as Ms. Crawford (with another drag queen as Christina). People shout at the screens when it plays like they do Rocky Horror.
It forced me to have a new appreciation for Joan Crawford…and for me to really look into the whole “Mommie Dearest” thing and see she was not the monster that the lying and opportunistic Christina painted her as in the book. Drag queens have a magical way of bringing back the best of these lost stars…and smoothing out their edges a little. As someone who always loved Whitney Houston, I’m looking forward to the “queens” doing this for her some day too…and bringing back the best of her performances via drag, while letting the bad things of the last years of her life stay buried.
This is an example of something really profoundly good and magical that happens in the gay community that a lot of straight people don’t notice…but gays really do recycle lost or fallen divas and patch them back into shape in gay memory.
QUESTION FOR COMMENTS: What else is on your mind today?
If you have anything you ever wanted to know about the gay community or the things it does, ask away! I’ll get to as many of these as I can a day and will make sure to answer all of them either the next day or the day after, depending on how many questions are there.
