Thursday Open Thread: May 12, 2011

Question of the day: what’s your take on the developments at Louisiana State University yesterday?

In case you missed it, an LSU grad student, Benjamin Haas, a communication studies graduate student, planned a flag-burning to protest the arrest of fellow LSU student Isaac Eslava. Last week, Eslava vandalized the campus’ historic War Memorial by tearing down its American flag and burning it. In the process, Eslava did over $7,500 in damage to the Memorial, according to police.

In a refreshing move, LSU student government president Cody Wells, also a First Amendment fan, staged a counter-protest to Haas’ counter-protest. An estimated 2,000 counter-counter-protesters engaged in acts of intolerant right-wing fanaticism such as reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, singing The Star-Spangled Banner, and chanting “U-S-A! U-S-A!” (Unfortunately, some bozos also went beyond “speech” and threw things like ice and water balloons.)

As quoted by FoxNews.com, Wells said,

“My main message behind all of this is that it’s time for my generation and our society to start speaking up so that the minority voice does not always seem like the loudest voice,” Wells said. “(Haas) did have the right to burn the flag, but it was not an honorable thing for him to do and our student body and fellow Louisianans made that very clear today as they rallied on campus to show support for our county.”

So, what intolerant acts of “right-wing fanaticism” and “hate speech” are you engaging in today in your part of the world?

Not a fan of the throwing things at the hippy, but glad people are starting to speak up. The reality is, the libturds DO NOT HAVE the numbers to succeed. America is a CENTER-RIGHT country, and all the whiny bedwetting bottom-feeders who want a worker's paradise should move to Venezuela.

I read the account earlier today and in that account, Haas had gotten LSUs PERMISSION to burn the flag. I also checked out Eslava’s info…see link http://randysright.wordpress.com/2011/05/07/lsu-s...
He has dual American and Columbian citizenship. If you look at hWas Eslava burning our flag with grant money, scholarship money supplied by taxpayers? Ditto Haas. How many more Ensalva’s are out there, living in America while possibly trying to incite the downfall of this Country?

what killed me was that the school let him (he went thru all the channels to do this) try to burn the flag in protest to someone being arrested for already vandalized the school.
in another video- it's the first one at michelle malkin- at the 3:08 mark, someone yelled "shave your mustache hippie!" that about finished me off right there! lol

    Well, I'll be…
Coming of age in the 60's/70's I would never have thought a campus could gather 2000 to counter protest any leftist ideas. Perhaps I should rather call them "urges" instead of ideas because most of the little twits don't really "think" about what they are doing or the consequences of their actions – they rather "feel" that it's what they want to do and they will do it despite the consequences – right up until one of them thinks about running for a statewide office someday and the photo of burning the American flag stops them in their tracks. Whooopsie. The law of unintended consequences is confounding to them. They get it when their poll numbers drop and contributors back off and they lose the respect of their friends, colleagues, and their children.

I can't believe the babies that are in the schools. I'm glad I went to college when I did and it occurred at a time when it was acceptable to be patriotic. I demand that LSU return every dime of federal money that went int to support this guy's actions to burn my country's flag!! If you don't like it here, you can speak up and then pack your bags for the south. Just get out!

For a long time Radicals have OWNED street protests and political theater ,because they controlled the cameras. Only their victories ever got filmed and shown.
    New media has changed that.

The mainstream media will attempt to move quickly beyond this ugly incident, as they did with Obama’s 20-year association with an America-hating black nationalist preacher during the campaign. The difference between then and now, however, is that these incidents are piling up.

The eminences grises at MSNBC see a serious problem ahead for Barack Obama in 2012. Why, some voters might just judge him on his … performance! Quelle horreur! Howard Fineman tells Chris Matthews on Hardball that Obama made a strategic error when he said that voters could judge him on how well he did his job. That’s an error? Isn’t that what voters are supposed to do with incumbents? No, explain Fineman and Matthews — incumbents are supposed to talk values (via Newsbusters and Blue Collar Todd)

They weren't "water balloons" at all, they were improvised fire suppression units. Ice? Delayed action fire suppression material.

I am not sure what happened to my post but it somehow or other got jumbled. I meant to say that if you look at his mug shot which the link takes you to, it looks as if he was sampling some of Columbia's main product. I guess it got transposed in cyber space. I then questioned if he was burning the flag using grant and scholarship money from US taxpayer. Sorry, guess I was in a hurry.

I saw a bit of ABC's nightly news tonight and the indoctrination was outragious! Obama Zombie Diane Soros, uups I mean Sawyer bent over backwards to support Obama's deception about Oil Company Subsidies. EThank you to the person who posted the story of a prominant democrat stating that Sarah Palin is telling the truth about Obama's deception concerning oil subsidies. The sussidies that Obama wants US to believe exist DO NOT! He is a pathelogical liar and he pulled a similar stunt against HRC in the undemocratic primary when he aired that commercial and told the American sheeple that he did not take money from oil companies. People believe his lies and the MSM aids and assists his deceptions. They are afraid of Soros and to be left out int eh cold in the New World Order.

Why are universities continuing to offer programs that end in 'studies' – such as communication studies, women/gender studies, media studies, etc. etc. They are useless programs producing useless grad (as evident by this young twit) who end up contributing NOTHING to society or producing anything that anyone whats to buy!!
