The Oscars — tiresome and predictable
I confess I haven’t seen most of the movies that were nominated for Oscar this year. I used to enjoy watching the Academy Awards Show for the stars, the fashions, the jewelry, and hearing my favorite actors give gracious speeches. However, for a very long time now that show has been one tedious PC self aggrandizing spectacle after another. Gone are the days of sincere appreciation being shown by a humble actor who has won an award (after all, that’s really all it is — it isn’t curing cancer!); they have been replaced by people who believe their own publicity, that they are so much more important than the rest of us that they are free to dictate to us what we should think and, more importantly, who we should hate (pretty much anyone conservative or religious, except for religious Muslims). These days the acceptance speeches, for the most part, reveal ego and phony humility. But I digress.
Here’s what I believe would have been courageous: And entire Oscar broadcast without one snarky remark about Republicans, conservatives, family values, Christians or Jews. Beginning the show with the Pledge of Allegiance. Or an invocation. Having a singer sing the National Anthem. Giving free front row seats to members of the United States Military, veterans, wounded warriors, family of troops currently serving in harm’s way. Creating an “American Patriot” award, analogous to the Lifetime Achievement awards they present to someone who has had a long, illustrious career in Hollywood. [I would nominate Gary Sinise for this]. Inviting people like Gary Sinise, Jon Voigt, Pat Boone, Bo Derek, Angie Harmon, Patricia Heaton, to be presenters. A nod to the contribution of the Tea Party (as there was at least one flattering comment about OWS in last night’s broadcast). Giving an award to an Israeli-made film. Honoring the great contribution that Jews have made to the entertainment industry since the beginning of the legend that has become Hollywood. [Before you jump on that suggestion for singling out one ethnic/cultural/religious group, remember that there are Latino film festivals and African American film festivals]. Making a film about how great America is. Making a film about the hypocrisy of radical Islam in its treatment of women and gay men. Of course, the cowardice of Hollywood includes valid fear of harm that would be done to anyone who makes a statement against radical Islam. That fear is justified by events such as those that unfolded just this week in Afghanistan. It would take courage to stand up to the ongoing threats to us by the perpetually angry Muslims who want nothing more than to bring America to its knees. But Hollywood is a very influential player on the world stage, and if there was any courage and moral clarity among its ranks, it could lead the way in showing the world the poverty of spirit that exists in radical Islamic terrorism. THAT would be courageous. Alas, those in power in Hollywood prefer to bow to threat and intimidation, believing that their sycophancy to political correctness will protect them in the long run. It is tiresome, predictable, and delusional.

Well put Penny! And did you see where the elite’s in Hollywood are now no longer driving their trendy green cars? Opting now for high dollar Porsches and such.
The hypocrisy is just too much to take sometimes.
I’ve never watched the Academy Awards. They rarely recognize movies I like (The Lord Of The Rings being an exception). My wife watched them so I watched a little bit as I went to the kitchen for a drink before I leave and go back to the room to keep watching whatever I was watching. Their jokes are lame and dumb, Billy Crystal’s humor is boring and predictable and I have no interest in hearing Hollyweirdos pontificate about whatever idiocy they believe in this year.
I’d rather spend a quiet evening cataloging my belly button lint than watch that swill.
Absolutely spot on, Penny! I ‘girlcotted’ the awards show. It’s an incestuous, self-aggrandizing leftist echo chamber.
Great article!
After watching enough to make me feel like the only adult in a house full of teenagers at a slumber party, I gratefully escaped with one click of the remote.
We shouldn’t be too surprised, if you remember not many years ago, Hollywood all joined together to sing,” The Greatest Love of All.”
The result, is a generation overflowing with self aggrandizement and lacking the depth sufficient to penetrate a sheet of paper.
Penny, I could not have said it better.
My daughter is in USAF, about to be deployed. It is all of our military
men and women who provide the freedom for the Follyweird narcissistic crowd to wallow in their self aggrandizing cesspool of drugs, adultery and propaganda films, and pontificate to us, “the peons” who are in “flyover country.”
Amen. This was indeed well said.
Well said, Penny! I couldn’t agree more. I have not watched awards shows for years, and your description encapsulates my reasons.
A great read, Penny. You captured in a few hundred words everything the matter with modern Hollywood. Pinpointing their cowardice as a by product the political correctness that enslaves them was my biggest take away from this. I hope you tag, link, and otherwise post this commentary all over the internet. It deserves to published.
Many years ago, I was in LA, walking into the lobby of the Fox Plaza Bldg. in Century City. Near the entrance I just passed through were three people talking, one of them being the actor John Ritter of Three’s Company fame. This was post Three’s Company and he was now doing a TV comedy with him as a radio host or DJ, I cannot remember the name of the program as watched it once and found its one line gag comedy boring and predictable.
As I passed, I overheard part of his conversation. He was talking about an upcoming episode that just finished taping and in all seriousness was telling everyone how deep and socially relevant the subject would be, his most important work evah! This is how serious these people take themselves, that all their low intellect bathroom and sex based humor is so deep, serious and insightful that to miss it is to miss the very lessons of life.
Great article, Penny! Our family chose to watch some real American heroes in lieu of the Oscars. We went to “Act of Valor.” Afterward, we watched the first lecture of Hillsdale College’s free internet course on the Constitution.
I’m sick to death of these people who live surreal and perverse lives, and put themselves out there as if they were someone to emulate, rather than a bad example of how to conduct oneself.
Sadly, TruTV had a World’s Dumbest marathon on & I missed the Oscar’s telecast.
The Academy Awards were on………….??
This seems all too obvious, but… why can’t we conservatives simply create our own awards show, and bypass these disgusting Hollyweird libtards completely! Surely there are wealthy patriots out there who would pony up enough funding to realize this dream…
Instead of holding the event in Southern California among the sluts and sodomites, why not rent a municipal auditorium in a truly American state like Kansas or Oklahoma? Imagine the joy of awarding gleaming statuettes (we could call them “Ronnies”!) to truly patriotic, America-loving actors, directors and movies. (NOT “films.” That’s the godawful crap that French people watch!)
Of course, we’ll need more strong conservative directors to make those movies in the first place… but isn’t creating our own award system a powerful first step in convincing good Republican men and women who’ve been hiding their beliefs for ages to break free of the treasonous lefty poison that has consumed the Hollyweird “film” industry whole?
This idea seems better and better the more I think it over. Anyone else here want to contribute ideas? Let’s get this ball rolling — right over the Hollyweird creeps who hate our beautiful nation!
