Hagiography. I was not familiar with the word until reading Rick Reilly’s commentary on ESPN where he shares his thoughts on JoePa’s role in the Penn State Sandusky scandal. In this context, “hagiography” is used to mean the anointment or idolization of JoePa — those who bought in to his legacy literally thought he could do no wrong.
Reilly points out that even as the Sandusky scandal was breaking, he and others thought JoePa couldn’t possibly have had knowledge. As he put it, JoePa was “too old and too addled to understand, too grandfatherly and Catholic to get that Sandusky was committing grisly crimes.” For all intents and purposes, they believed Joe Paterno was a saint.
Even now, after the Freeh report has laid bare the extent of the coverup and of Paterno’s depth of knowledge, the Internet is alive with JoePa defenders. I admit that I find myself not wanting to believe the evidence, and I’m not even a Penn State fan. Clearly, the lure of the legend is powerful.
As I read ESPN’s article I was struck by the thought that Obama enjoys similar hagiography as JoePa. Case in point: Chris “thrill up my leg” Matthews recently commented that Obama was basically “perfect.” This from the same guy who said his job was to make Obama a successful president, and once compared Obama to Jesus. The Internet overflows with other examples of the cult-like support of Obama.
I believe that once a person buys in to a legend, in some ways they feel like they become a part of that legend. And they perpetuate and even grow that legend – and their own perceived role within it – through their own retelling. When this happens, their dedication to the legend becomes more powerful than the legend itself.
When people by in to a legend, they become incapable of seeing the truth. Anything which could shatter the legend is willfully ignored. Not just because it would destroy the legend itself, but also because it would mean the person’s investment into said legend would have been false from the beginning.
JoePa, Tiger Woods, Barack Obama. All legends, all recipients of blind hagiography.
The media really should wake up. I firmly believe that our leaders — regardless of party — should be treated tough by the media. Fair, but tough. There is no room for idolatry in a free country.
As the unnamed professor from Reilly’s commentary said, “What you media are doing is dangerous.” Yes, it is dangerous. Idolization allows Obama to be a lazy president and a weaker leader, which damages us both domestically and throughout the world. Media, take a lesson from the blind beatification of JoePa and do your damn job.
Yesterday, I was talking to a friend about what’s going on at Penn State and she asked me what I thought should happen, and I told her without hesitation that everyone on the administrative staff of Penn State should be fired immediately…and a good portion of them should go to prison.
EVERYONE. Down to the last secretary in the administrative offices. Every last one of these people need to be fired, because there is no way that the rapes of young boys wouldn’t have filtered through to the administrative assistants, file clerks, and janitors at that school over the years.
And anyone who heard even a RUMOR of young boys being raped at Penn State should have dropped whatever they were doing to RUN to the nearest phone to call the police. Absent any access to a phone, they should have taken off running through the streets making as much noise as possible until authorities were alerting to what was going on.
ALL OF THESE PEOPLE SHOULD BE FIRED.
Apparently, the next bombshell to drop in all of this is that young boys were pimped out to wealthy Penn State donors so these men (and possibly some women) could have sex with minors and have their perversions facilitated by Penn State in exchange for contributions to the school.
That’s the sort of thing that perverts in Europe fly to Thailand to do to little boys and girls…and here it appears this was happening in “Happy Valley” Pennsylvania all this time. No wonder American sickos weren’t going to Thailand…it was a much shorter flight to College Station, Pennsylvania.
All of Penn State’s large donors need to be investigated by the police immediately.
Everyone in Penn State’s development office needs to be dragged down to the police station and held under the Patriot Act until they crack and divulge what, exactly, was being done in terms of sexually trafficking minors at Penn State.
PLEASE READ THIS ARTICLE NOW -- it is the most disturbing thing I have come across in years.
If reading this outrages you, do something about it.
Pick up the phone and give the people involved a telephone call and tell them what you think about this story.
You will make a difference because there is just no way that all of this could have gone on at Penn State for all these years without hundreds of people knowing it was happening and looking the other way.
I’ve worked in development offices at nonprofits and let me tell you, the secretaries and assistants gossip like nobody’s business. There is a lot of down time in the development circles and a nice coffee cubby area in every development office. There is no way that young boys could have been pimped out at Penn State to large donors without the entire development staff knowing what was going on and choosing to look the other way.
Please call Penn State and the Second Mile Foundation’s Development Offices and tell them that everyone working there needs to be ashamed of themselves for not calling the police and demanding an investigation into what was happening to young boys at Penn State.
I am going to call as many of these people as I can today and tell them they should be ashamed of themselves for not going to the police with anything they may have heard regarding the sexual trafficking and rape of young boys at Penn State.

Hollywood idiot Ashton Kutcher sides with child abusers — then gets slapped back by his own fans HARD
Yesterday, Hollywood idiot Ashton Kutcher used Twitter to side with the child abusers at Penn State, outraged that football coach Joe Paterno was fired for knowingly allowing young boys to be raped in his football locker room.
Almost immediately, Kutcher’s fans on Twitter slapped him back hard for siding with the molesters and not the victims in this matter.
Kutcher claims he didn’t really know what he was talking about and hadn’t heard that the rape of young boys was involved in this matter.
This reminds me a lot of ignorant people out there who have no idea who Che Guevara really was — or what he himself did to children — but love wearing those “super-cool” Che tee shirts or post images of Guevara on their websites, like he’s some sort of history hero.
That’s Johnny Depp, above, wandering around Hollywood somewhere promoting Che Guevara as the latest in hip, Hollywood, casual wear.
That’s a screengrab from a page on the William Fremd High School website where teacher Jason Spoor glamorizes Che Guevara (and Karl Marx, too) as a history hero worthy of inclusion alongside exotic vacation photos of himself.
Leftists, whether you find them in Hollywood or more locally teaching in the public education system, evidence poor judgment when it comes to people like Joe Paterno and Che Guevara.
This is something we’ve been reporting on for months on The HillBuzz & Mrs. Fox Show because the Left has a tendency to turn a blind eye to crimes committed against children in its rush to create heroes out of people like Paterno and Guevara that they might actually know very little about.
I have to admit I’d never heard of Joe Paterno until this week. I had a friend who went to Penn State and I used to write to her in “Happy Valley” many years ago and I was aware that football was a big thing in College Station, Pennsylvania. I understand that many people called Paterno “Grandpa Joe”. But, I’ve learned that Paterno knowingly allowed the rape of young boys to continue in the Penn State locker rooms.
It’s obvious to me that if anyone discovers someone raping children (or anyone for that matter) then that person needs to dial 911 immediately and ask the police to bring every available officer to take names and crack skulls. I think the SWAT team should be involved and the child molesters should be treated like Al Queda operatives. Aside from terrorists, those who commit crimes against children are the most vile monsters to ever walk this Earth.
Which is why seeing Che Guevara honored as a history hero at William Fremd High School in Palatine, Illinois on a web server funded by US taxpayers is equally disturbing to me, since Guevara raped and murdered children by the THOUSANDS.
The Left doesn’t seem to appreciate the enormity of that, which results in those hipster tee shirts worn by Depp and the homage to Guevara displayed by Spoor…but in actuality serial killer John Wayne Gacy harmed fewer children than Che Guevara. But, Guevara’s a history hero at William Fremd High School…and “Granpa Joe” and his coaching staff are heroes at Penn State.
There is true evil in this world, and it feeds off the sort of ignorance displayed by Ashton Kutcher in his tweets, Johnny Depp’s fashion choices, and teacher Jason Spoor’s web decorating decisions.
For whatever reason, the political Left in this country consistently chooses to apologize for, downplay, or downright ignore the evil committed against children.
Why is that and what can YOU do to change this?
As with the OWS…the clueless and misguided are rioting again for all the wrong reasons. The Penn State students are out of control because Joe Paterno has been fired…he should have been fired years ago for ignoring the complaints and evidence that Jerry Sandusky, one of his assistant coaches, had been sexually molesting young boys in the locker room of the Penn State football facility.
Why aren’t these students rioting for justice for these boys?
Why are college students allowed to vote? The voting age should be 25 and you should be required to pass a competency test before you can vote.
Why do Americans continue to worship cult of personalities?
What the hell is wrong with this country?
I think we are the victim of our media.
What do you think?
News came down a few minutes ago that the trustees of Penn State University fired head football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier effective immediately.
I haven’t followed this story closely, so I just became aware of the fact that Joe Paterno KNEW that his former defensive coordinator, Jerry Sandusky, had been CAUGHT RAPING A 10-YEAR OLD BOY IN 2002 AND YET CONTINUED TO WORK ALONGSIDE HIM IN THE PENN STATE FOOTBALL PROGRAM FOR NINE MORE YEARS.
I am about to throw up.
I also just found out that the person who WALKED IN ON Jerry Sandusky RAPING A 10-YEAR OLD BOY, one Mike McQueary, not only DID NOT RESCUE THE BOY AND BEAT JERRY SANDUSKY TO DEATH at the time, but IS CURRENTLY RECEIVERS COACH FOR THE TEAM!
This “man,” Mike McQueary [seriously? That’s his name?], DIDN’T EVEN CALL THE POLICE to report the rape. As reported on FoxNews.com,
“The 84-year-old Paterno has been besieged by criticism since Sandusky was charged over the weekend with sexually abusing eight young boys between 1994 and 2009. Athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz have been charged with failing to notify authorities after an eyewitness reported a 2002 assault. […]
Though Paterno is not accused of any wrongdoing, he has been questioned over his apparent failure to follow up on a report of the 2002 incident, in which Sandusky allegedly sodomized a 10-year-old boy in the showers at the team’s football complex. A witness, Mike McQueary, is currently receivers coach for the team but was a graduate assistant at the time.
McQueary told Paterno about the incident the next day, and the coach notified Curley and Schultz, who in turn notified Penn State president Graham Spanier. Curley and Schultz have been charged with perjury and failure to report the incident to authorities, as required by state law.
I would like to point out that this story includes all the elements that the sexual harassment smear campaign against Herman Cain does not.
- An eyewitness.
- Sexual contact.
- A very long paper trail.
The only thing that appears to be missing is the one thing the Herman Cain smear campaign has in abundance: OUTRAGE.
WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE???
Last night, ESPN broadcast video of a student rally at the home of Joe Paterno. They RALLIED in front of his house, shouting words of encouragement to him.
Presumably the residents and students of State College, PA were more aware of the situation than I was. Some, if not all, of these people must have known that this Jerry Sandusky had been protected by Penn State’s coaching staff and administrators, including Paterno.
But the people of State College PA and the students in front of Joe Pa’s house were more concerned with FOOTBALL than with CHILDREN BEING RAPED.
This is what a sex scandal looks like.
And the fact that the Democrat-Controlled Media has spent more time in the past three days reporting on Herman Cain than on Jerry Sandusky and Joe Paterno…that’s a scandal all its own.
