[Click above to embiggen: the latest ridiculous rumor that HotAir is trying to start, that the third presidential debate will be canceled…because I guess HotAir needs clicks and web traffic.]
I really need your help on this one, because it stumps me. I think it’s a cultural thing that I don’t understand, since I didn’t grow up as a Republican. This might be some kind of fetish that my brain doesn’t have and can’t process. Can someone please explain to me why Republicans seem to love bizarre Conspiracies of DOOM?
Democrats never do this. Only Republicans get into this stuff. Is it the equivalent of going to a fun and scary haunted house and getting the adrenaline going? Is there something about being a Republican that means people who are Republican can’t get enough of freaking themselves out all the time?
HotAir is the place that I see a lot of this stuff originate, with two people being mainly responsible: Jazz Shaw and something called an “Allahpundit.” In my opinion, they are two of the most irresponsible people writing on any conservative site. Why do they have jobs?
The latest rumor they are pushing is that “DOOM! Hillary Clinton is going to pull out of the third debate!” I don’t know why any sane person would ever write something like that…unless it’s just supposed to get them more clicks and web traffic. Is that why they do this?
If so, these guys are being really dishonest with their readers. When you post something political, you should believe in what you are posting at the time. You could later be proven wrong if you are making a prediction that doesn’t pan out, but you should have the decency to write in good faith about whatever it is you are analyzing in the moment. That’s a basic assumption when reading a credible political site, which I assume HotAir to be.
So why are they behind so many of the weird demoralizing rumors of DOOM! DOOM, I SAY! that percolate during elections? I will never understand why they do this. I wish there was a convenient way of keeping track of whenever they do this and plotting it out on a graph or something to make a nice record of their behavior, which I think is atrocious.
Does anyone really believe that Hillary Clinton is going to pull out of the last debate on October 19th? Why on Earth would she do that? HotAir is pushing this lie today, just like they pushed similar lies before the first debate that all the debates were going to be canceled. Why did they do that?
My ex-boyfriend Justin’s mother, CarolAnne, eats this stuff up like candy. I happen to love CarolAnne and even though Justin moved back home to Arkansas I still gets emails from her, which I am happy about. She enjoys jabbing me for being part of Team Hillary in 2008 and I enjoy pointed, acerbic banter with someone I’ve known for 6 years and hope I am in touch with for the rest of her life. She adds color to my day whenever she pops into my in-box to harangue me with something that I usually think is crazy. It makes me smile.
HotAir upsets CarolAnne on a rolling basis, because she reads the things they say as if they are true instead of weird lies (which I believe them to be). All through the primaries, CarolAnne was upset by HotAir because the muppets posting over there said the following at one point or another:
* Donald Trump would drop out of the primaries
* Ted Cruz would snatch the nomination from Trump
* At the Convention in Cleveland, Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio and others would orchestrate a coup and take the nomination away from Trump and give it to Mitt Romney
* Mitt Romney is an evil genius who was plotting multiple coups
* Trump would lose interest in being the nominee and would drop out of the race after the Convention
* The debates would be canceled
* Okay, so after the first debate was not canceled, the second one totally would be canceled
* Trump would be dumped as the nominee and replaced with Mitt Romney because, uh, something or another
* The second debate happened but there will totally be no more debates, because Allahpundit said so
What the hell is an Allahpundit anyway? One thing I tell CarolAnne is that as a general rule in life, I never pay much attention to anything said or written by anyone who uses a fake screen name. To me, if you don’t want to use your real name when writing your opinions, then you really don’t believe in what you are saying and you never want to be held accountable for any of it. Hence, you call yourself “Allahpundit” or “SkippyMcGee” or “Whatever.”
What I think Allahpundit and Jazz Shaw do is that they look at Twitter and other social media trackers and they see what key words are trending and then they try to invent some story that would surf those trends and get a lot of attention. I don’t think they write about what they are thinking about in the moment so much as they write things that they think would upset people and get them a lot of attention. I think it’s all about getting hits for HotAir. So, that’s their business model.
What troubles me is that I believe these guys know how much they manipulate people like CarolAnne emotionally with these wild rumors they spread, but they don’t really care what it does to people. Someone like CarolAnne has been on an emotional rollercoaster needlessly the last few months, believing the things that Allahpundit and Jazz Shaw write that never turn out to be true. I think this rollercoaster of emotions is addictive for a lot of people…and it sure is exciting for them to be taken in by the latest Conspiracy of Doom. That’s much more exciting than real life, even during the most exciting election we’ve ever had.
As wild and crazy as things really are in Actual Reality every day right now, HotAir wants to make them even more exciting by introducing weird, fictional, Alternate Realities where things like debates are canceled or presidential candidates are removed from the ballot weeks before an election. These are the kinds of things that happen on tee-vee shows like Scandal, not the real world. I picture Allahpundit — whoever the hell that is — trying to squeeze into an Olivia Pope costume for Halloween, with an oversized glass of red wine in his hand, prancing around a sad little apartment somewhere laughing his head off that he’s once again gotten the CarolAnnes of the world upset over his latest manufactured rumor.
I don’t know why Republicans are so into this stuff, but I’ll tell you that Democrats don’t engage in any of this. Republicans seem to gravitate towards Conspiracies of Doom that are frightening to them, where Republicans for some reason like hearing tales of the worst things that could possibly befall them. Like children gathered around a campfire listening to ghost stories in their jammies. Republicans like to be scared out of their minds, I guess. Democrats ain’t got no time for that. They are too busy winning elections.
If you notice, no Democrats put out negative or doomsday content before an election because Democrats don’t want to depress their own turnout. A Democrat will never write anything that depresses people and makes them want to just sit home on election day. Everything that Democrats do is designed to rev up their base and get people to vote as many times as possible, with as much fraud and trickery as possible, to defeat the evil Republicans. Doing anything and everything to break the law and rig the system and whatever it takes is a badge of honor for Democrats.
All Republicans ever seem to do is to freeze in place, terrify themselves with the latest Conspiracy of Doom, and essentially forfeit elections…because they psych themselves out and convince themselves that there’s no hope so we all might as well just give up. To me, this would be like a foolish person having a job interview…but deciding ahead of time that there’s no way she would ever be hired, or believing people were plotting against her to keep her from being hired, so she doesn’t bother to print out a resume to take with her, doesn’t bother to wear nice clothes or even comb her hair, doesn’t bother to get there on time or do anything else to land herself that job.
Then, when she doesn’t get the job, she says: “See! Allahpundit was right! I was never going to get the job!”
Psyching themselves out and just giving up in the home stretch is this weird thing that Republicans do that Democrats never, ever do. For the life of me, I don’t know why Republicans do it. And I don’t know why there are never any consequences for people like Allahpundit or Jazz Shaw who encourage all this. Why do they still have paying jobs as columnists at HotAir when this is the kind of content they vomit out?
If anyone can explain this to me, please do. I am sincerely stumped and must be missing something. I would appreciate the edification.
HotAir has not been favorable to a presidential run for Governor Palin. Ed Morrissey is a big Tim Pawlenty fan, and that has a lot to do with it.
Tim Pawlenty will not beat Obama in 2012, and neither will any of the Cocktail Party soggy sandwich establishment Republicans the GOP and national media continue to push towards the nomination. Pawlenty might be a nice man. He might have been a good governor of Minnesota. But he is not going to set the world on fire and mobilize the sort of forces and resources needed to combat the media and Left’s full court press to re-elect Obama.
If you do not already, you need to understand what is at stake in 2012: the Left invested EVERYTHING in Obama, and they need two terms with him in office to do the damage to the country that they want to do. No second term means exile into the wilderness for the Left for another generation. They have come so close, after plotting and scheming for so long, to let this once-in-a-lifetime chance slip away.
A wimp like Tim Pawlenty is not going to be able to stop the Left in 2012. This is just reality.
Governor Palin can and will stop Obama. Putting aside all personal feelings for the Governor (a woman I respect and admire in whatever she does), the reason I am so gung-ho for her candidacy is because she possesses the precise internal fortitude and natural abilities needed at this particular moment in time. She is honestly the only Republican I can imagine on the field being able to withstand all that will be thrown against her. She is indeed tough enough, and is the only Republican I’ve seen in a generation who actually understands the need to hit the Left with everything she’s got, pulling no punches.
There is no man in the entire Cocktail Party establishment who can be trusted to do that.
If you disagree, chime in, but be prepared to cite examples of this mythical Republican male who has proven his abilities to go the distance in the face of the volcanic, Mordor-grade trial by fire the Left and media (redundancy alert!) have in store for whomever runs against Obama in 2012.
UPDATE: HotAir just released this: Tim Pawlenty’s book sells fewer than 5,000 copies in its first week. There have been books “written” by famous cats and dogs that have sold more than that, in their FIRST DAY of release.
Both of Governor Palin’s books were instant bestsellers. Going Rogue actually outsold not only Obama’s books (the ones he allegedly wrote, but sure sound like they came from the minds of William Ayers and Jon Favreau, respectively), but BILL CLINTON’S MEMOIR.
If you are a big fan of Pawlenty, like Ed Morrissey is, I’d love to hear you reconcile the reality of anemic book sales with his viability as a national candidate. If people aren’t energized to plunk down $20 to read his deepest, most personal thoughts in his “epic tome” then I just don’t see how they are going to be jazzed up to spend next winter in the brutal cold on the ground for this man in a presidential campaign…or go the distance for him through the general election, spending every cent they have to elect this man president.
That’s what’s needed.
There are millions of us who will do this gladly for Governor Palin.
If Tim Pawlenty is not worth a $20 commitment in January of 2011 to read his book, then he should not be pushed as a serious 2012 presidential candidate because the enthusiasm gap between reality and what the Cocktail Party establishment wants is just too enormous to take him seriously.
HotAir has a great take on Mark Halperin, from TIME magazine, complaining that conservatives should never defend themselves when they are bullied by the Left and its media propaganda arm. Essentially, Haperin argues that conservatives just need to shut up and take whatever the Left is beating them with, never challenge any of the lies the Left tells about the Tea Party, and allow the Left to do whatever it wants unchallenged.
I have a personal anecdote about how completely stupid, but ridiculously prevalent, this line of thinking really is. I hope you chime in on this thread with personal examples of your own, so we call can get a bigger picture of just how many conservatives are actually conditioned by the media to agree with Halperin themselves.
My boyfriend Justin was raised in Arkansas in a conservative Republican family that taught him to always mind his manners, fly under the radar, be quiet, and not make any trouble. His parents are very nice people, who don’t like that their son is gay, but who don’t hate him for it. They think it’s just a phase he’s in and insist on calling me just Justin’s “friend” or “buddy”, and I’m fine with that. Not every parent is expected to dress head to toe in rainbows and march with us in parades. I’m sure many parents of heterosexual children aren’t thrilled with the girlfriends their sons bring home or the boyfriends their daughters end up with. Such is life.
I do, however, have a problem with Justin’s parents teaching him to be so meek, because Justin parrots a lot of the brainwashing many conservatives seem to have, in the realm of “we need to just ignore these terrible things the Left is saying because challenging them only draws more attention to it”. This is madness, and it’s the reason the Left has been able to control and monopolize the conversation on so many issues. It’s because conservatives often completely cede the debate to these lunatics, since exposing their hypocrisy, directly challenging their apocryphal assertions, and calling them on the carpet for their lies is seen as somehow “beneath” conservatives. Standing up to bullies is something conservatives were taught not to do.
In a very practical anecdotal sense, this is something that Justin is having to deal with at age 25, after growing up in a household where his parents told him to “just ignore” bullies and “turn the other cheek”. At work, Justin’s being bullied by two co-workers: one who doesn’t like that he’s conservative (and dating me, an outspoken gay conservative writer) and the other who’s just a 6’4″ meathead who bullies people territorially.
Justin has been complaining about these two for months now, and as much as I love Justin I think he’s being a wuss. Just as I think many conservatives are wusses who parrot that “take the high road and just ignore them!” approach to the Leftist media lies.
The meathead bully is named Dan, and part of his bullying is harassing Justin whenever he takes a short 10 minute break at work, at times when there’s a lull and he’s able to take a break. Which he is allowed by the company…and state and federal labor law. Dan, by the way, is not Justin’s supervisor and has less seniority than Justin. Dan, also by the way, takes frequent cigarette breaks even when it’s busy. He just disappears to smoke for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times during his shift. Justin does not say boo about this.
Because Justin says “that would be two wrongs not making a right, since I don’t like it when Dan says I take breaks I should not tell him that he takes those smoking breaks either”. For the life of me, I just don’t understand that logic, but Justin really and truly thinks this way. So do his parents, who keep advising him to “just focus on doing your work and ignore what Dan is saying”.
Dan is making problems for Justin at work — a job he really and truly needs — by telling people Justin is not doing his job and is taking breaks when it is busy. That’s getting Justin in trouble and lowering Justin’s standing with his coworkers and bosses. It is similar to the Leftist media constantly spreading lies about conservatives, the Tea Party, and Governor Sarah Palin. As ridiculous as these apocryphal assertions are, the more they are pumped out to the public the more Americans accept them as fact because they are unchallenged.
Meanwhile, Justin’s bully, Dan, takes frequent smoking breaks when it’s busy and he’s not supposed to, though Justin won’t call him out on it and confront his bullying, or even say anything to his managers or coworkers that Dan’s the one who should be disciplined for shirking his duty. It’s just like conservatives sitting back meekly, not saying boo about any of the horrible things Democrats routinely do in this country, because “it’s taking the high road to stay silent” or “two wrongs don’t make a right so if we don’t like when Democrats say bad things about us we can’t be big meanies and point out their hypocrisy”.
Well, I was stunned to hear this, but a few days ago Justin told me that he worked up the nerve to say something to Dan after Dan started bullying him again. He listed off the last half dozen or so times that Dan took cigarette breaks when they were busy and how long Dan had been away from his post to smoke. Justin hasn’t been saying anything to Dan about this, but it’s clearly bothered him enough to keep track of all of Dan’s activities in great detail — just as I bet conservatives all know exactly what the Left does to this country, but they are too meek and timid to say anything publicly about it. Justin was polite as he always is, I’m sure, because he’s the most polite and well-mannered guy I’ve probably ever met, but he was firm and assertive and itemized all of Dan’s bad behavior.
Dan was floored.
He never expected Justin to stand up to him. Because of his size, maybe no one has ever stood up to him before. He did not take this well.
Shortly after Justin called him out, Dan left for another smoke break and had a sort of mini-breakdown. He complained to other coworkers that Justin hates him and that he didn’t mean to attack Justin, etc. In the days since, Dan’s developed a paranoia about all of this, repeatedly asking Justin if they are “cool” and if Justin “hates him”. Dan’s apparently very insecure and thin-skinned and the slightest bit of criticism his way unhinges the guy.
Much like the Left, Obama in particular.
If conservatives would just speak up, stop parroting that “just ignore them” garbage, and stand up to the bullies of the Left, I bet a good portion of these Leftists would crumple like Dan the bully here in Boystown.
Justin is a wonderful guy, but he needs to stop being such a wuss. I’m not saying he needs to be as hard-hitting as I am when it comes to the Left, but he needs to stop biting his tongue and start speaking his mind when he sees someone bullying him. Just as conservatives need to do the same thing in political circles, because keeping quiet and refusing to address apocryphal attacks just emboldens the Left to do this all the more.
