Some Chicago notes on the fundraising nightmares the GOP has had under Michael Steele
Here’s a blurb in Politico about large GOP donors formalizing their ongoing and already effective fundraising boycott of the RNC if Michael Steele gets a second term as Chair. Steele, embarrassingly, played the race card today and essentially said that if he is not given a second term, then Republicans are racist. I personally like Steele and think he’s an interesting and engaging character, but if he wants to play the race card professionally, he needs to get himself a flux capacitor and the last road-safe Delorean because all race cards expired on January 20th, 2009 at 12 noon when our “historic and unprecedented first black president” took office.
Or, alternatively, on whatever the Hell date and time Michael Steele himself took office as the historic and unprecedented first black Chair of the RNC. It’s absurd for Steele to call people racist for thinking he hasn’t done a good job. If everyone seems in universal agreement of this, then maybe Steele needs to look in the mirror and ask himself if maybe he should have ever had this job in the first place.
The RNC Chair is primarily a fundraiser and GOTV strategist. Steele has failed in both capacities…and as nice, personable, and interesting as he is…he needs to go.
Here in Illinois, Steele’s tenure has been disastrous because it has not only driven away top donors, but it’s allowed a motley crew of oddballs to gain disproportionate sway in how the GOP operates in the state.
Many large GOP donors have always thought Steele was a buffoon and that his election was Affirmative Action because the GOP wanted to have a black leader to answer Obama on the Democrats’ side. Instead of looking for the most effective and best choice overall for the post, Republicans played identity politics to appease the media and Steele became RNC Chair. Whatever needed to be done to get Republican donors to open their checkbooks, Steele didn’t do it. Though, in fairness to him, from 2008-2010, the tenure of Steele as RNC Chair, the media bred an awful lot of eeyores in Republican ranks.
Eeyores are counterproductive, pessimistic, glum little rain clouds that like to say “Why bother? It’s hopeless. We’re all doomed!” whenever prompted by the media. After Obama won in 2008 and Democrats made advances in Congress, the media perpetuated the lie that “Republicans were going extinct” and that a magical hopeychangey Democrat majority would dominate the country forever. It sure looks like large Republican donors believed this apocryphal tripe and decided not to waste their money on the RNC…no matter what Steele told them about the GOP’s 2010 chances.
It’s a whole different ballgame now, and not because of anything the GOP did, but because the Tea Party and Independents kicked so much Democrat a** coast to coast in the midterm election…while the GOP largely sat back and tried to stay out of the way.
That 63 seat gain in Congress could have been 100+ if Republicans had been smart enough to hit the Democrats harder on Obamacare and the economy…but making Obamacare a campaign issue would have hurt Mittens Romney’s chances to be the 2012 nominee (since “It’s his turn!”) and the GOP didn’t put forward any concrete solutions to our economic woes (so they decided just not to talk about it and let people be mad at Democrats instead).
I know for a fact Illinois GOP state chair Pat Brady has suffered mightily in the donor boycott of the Republican Party…and he has had to do some very desperate and sad things to get any money at all into GOP coffers since 2008.
Because the usual large donors closed up tight, Brady had to go begging for money from unsavory characters ranging from raging homophobes to insatiable cougars.
That’s how much Brady needed money…that he actually had to go out to the palatial estate of a stomach-turning, old school bigot to beg for money from a man who can’t conclude a sentence without cursing gay people in it.
I worked alongside Pat Brady in the McCain campaign and he earned a high opinion in my book by doing everything he could to cajole the eeyores and self-defeatists in the Cocktail Party to get off their sorry butts and do whatever they could to stop Obama. This was an impossible task, since the vast majority of the Cocktail Party GOP establishment wanted Obama to win (including then-Chair of the Illinois GOP, Andy McKenna)…because they would benefit more from Mittens Romney becoming the 2012 GOP candidate than they would John McCain becoming president.
This stuff is sick to think about, but it’s true. I can name names of the Republican “leaders” who talked openly of wanting McCain to lose, so “(they) would at last be rid of him”, and then “(they) could start working for Romney, because he will give us good jobs”.
Say what you want about Pat Brady, and my opinion of him changed when he used anti-gay pejoratives while begging for money from that certain wealthy bigot (whom I suspect doth protesteth too much), but it sure feels like Brady was so desperate to raise funds that he would have set himself on fire if enough people would attend a fundraiser to roast s’mores over him and fund the Illinois GOP’s operating budget.
This is also why Elizabeth “Beth” Christie was allowed to essentially take over the Illinois GOP and use it as her own personal dollhouse.
“The Elizabeth K. Christie Foundation” (for wayward boys) might as well be run by a character played by Jennifer Coolidge in movies named after baked goods.
One of the great personal tragedies of my life is that I do not have a personal friendship with Beth Christie — who seems like an absolute hoot and the world’s greatest and most insatiable undiscovered fag hag. She’s too brash and brazen for the watered down “fairy’s princess” I normally call a woman who hangs out with gay guys to have fun, check out other hot guys, and channel not just Coolidge but Kim Cattrall and the various characters she’s played through the years.
Writing this here in Boystown, I can visualize Christie sitting at tables at various Republican events, surrounded by handsome young men, giggling, being fed strawberries, and occasionally interrupting whoever’s speaking with melodious, golden peals of laughter as expensive-sounding and full of money as her one-of-a-kind special edition Louis Vuitton purse on the floor next to her.
In normal times, when other large GOP donors were still writing checks, Beth Christie and her antics would have just added interesting color to otherwise drab rooms. Just imagine a typical Cocktail Party establishment cocktail party, full of balding, fat, men in Men’s Wearhouse gray suits…and then in bursts Christie, flamboyantly, with scores of young men on her arm, laughing and carrying on loudly. She’s the life of the party, which is a great thing…but not when she’s the GOP’s sole large donor, quarter after quarter, and the cougar knows it.
For just north of $250,000, Beth Christie was able to essentially buy the GOP in Illinois in the year 2010. Pat Brady needed her donations so badly that whatever crazy thing she demanded, she got, without question. If one of her “dollies” — the pet name given to the young men comprising her entourage — wanted a job in the GOP, Brady made it happen. Whether that man-boy had even so much as a college degree or not. Christie’s money and influence installed high school graduates into key positions of power in the Cook County GOP. If anyone balked at Christie’s staffing suggestions, her hand would magically cramp up and she’d let Brady know she wouldn’t be writing any more checks. Not until her dolly had a job he liked, where he could be important.
Keeping Beth Christie happy became the number one job of everyone working in the Illinois GOP…not winning elections…not taking down the Left…not getting a candidate to run for Mayor when Daley retired…just keeping Beth Christie happy so her check-writing hand wouldn’t cramp up whenever she frowned.
Somewhere, I picture Beth Christie at a Christmas party, with built young guys dancing to jingle bells in red and green jockstraps, a big smile on her face, dreaming not of sugar plums and candy canes but of Michael Steele getting a second term as RNC Chair so she can continue playing with the Illinois GOP as her dollhouse for another two years.
If the large donor boycott will only increase under a second Steele term, and Christie paid $250,000 in 2010 to essentially own the GOP in Illinois as the only large donor, just imagine how little she may have to spend to be top dog cougar in 2011. Could she get away with her antics with just $100,000 in “checky-checks”?
How homophobic will Pat Brady have to get to convince virulent bigots to fund the Illinois GOP if Steele gets that second term and the boycott from large donors is ratcheted up?
What other crazy things will state GOP chairs in other states have to do to raise funds to compensate for what they lose with more time under Chairman Steele?
When will this madness end?
BREAKING: New scandal to rock Chicago Young Republicans? Is the Cocktail Party GOP in Chicago using Democrats' Alinsky Methods to take down resistance to Romney 2012?
More on this later, but there’s another major scandal brewing for the Chicago Young Republicans social club here in Chicago.
It seems the group is desperately trying to secure funding sources from Romney 2012 groups, as other revenue streams have dried up for them in the wake of the summer sex scandal involving its former president and the coverup that Lee Roupas (Cook County GOP Chair) and Pat Brady (Illinois GOP Chair) engaged in to shield the CYRs and said president from discipline and scrutiny.
One very wealthy cougar, Beth Christie, used her Elizabeth K. Christie Foundation to fund all sorts of questionable activities for the group (with even more questionable, Stifler’s Mom-esque, motives of her own), but before the November election former Illinois GOP Chair Andy McKenna apparently had a sit-down with Christie and told her to knock it off because she was embarrassing herself and the party on a national scale. So, she’s no longer directly funding the CYRs.
That means they are looking for new sources of revenue…and since they are mainly Romney 2012 Guys anyway, they are turning to Mittens.
More on this later, but last night the CYRs took a cheap and dirty Alinsky-grade swipe at a prominent Republican voice of criticism against the Cocktail Party status quo here in Chicago.
There’s a civil war waging in Chicago GOP circles…between the “It’s His Turn” Cocktail Party Romney Guys and conservatives who want to take back their party and clean house, removing people like Roupas, Brady, and the Beth Christie-funded CYR operatives who are employing Democrats’ Alinsky Methods on Mitt Romney’s behalf.
What they did last night was bad — beyond the pale bad — and it certainly won’t be ignored by us, that’s for damn sure.
SECOND UPDATE: GOP IL Chairman Pat Brady calls us "a bunch of fucking faggots"
This is incredibly disturbing news — but we have it confirmed from three separate sources.
This weekend, GOP Illinois Chairman Pat Brady – a man we have long admired, and whom we worked side by side with during the 2008 McCain campaign — has called us “a bunch of fucking faggots”.
We apologize for the use of expletives, but we have it confirmed from unimpeachable sources these are Brady’s exact words. If Brady used them in public against us, then we’re not going to give him the respect of censoring them here. If Brady has this sort of potty mouth, and hatred inside him, then we are not going to do him any favors by blunting his words now.
Just like the Obama White House does with anything bad that it does, Brady is attempting to blame the growing scandal Lee Roupas, GOP Cook County Chair, is involved in on us…and Democrats in Chicago.
Pat Brady needs to be removed from his post as IL GOP Chair. We hope you will help us in the coming week to make sure this happens. Lee Roupas should have been fired on July 16th, 2010 for lying to committeemen in an email regarding his involvement in this coverup, but Brady chose to protect Roupas, because Roupas is favored highly by multimillionare cougar Beth Christie, the woman who REALLY controls the Illinois GOP.
Language like this from a GOP Chair in any state is unacceptable. He would certainly be fired if he referred to anyone as “fucking niggers”, so calling us “fucking faggots” at an event this weekend should not be allowed either. It is beyond ridiculous to blame us for this scandal when it was Lee Roupas’ attack on truthteller Eloise Gerson that brought Brady’s house of cards tumbling down.
It’s amusing to us that Pat Brady feels this way, since we “fucking faggots”, to use his terminology, were certainly useful and good enough to be deployed for McCain campaign activities back in 2008. When we were of use to him, he lavished praise…but when we join the ever growing chorus for a detailed investigation into the conduct of Lee Roupas, Brady’s protege and protectee, we’re called “fucking faggots”.
This is not the Pat Brady we knew in 2008. This is not the Pat Brady we admired. This is a despicable man who has thrown everything he has into protecting other vile, despicable men like Lee Roupas and “The Prophet”. Illinois deserves better than this.
Ever since Eloise Gerson called for an investigation into the coverup Lee Roupas was engaged in regarding the attempted date rape allegations leveled against the Cook County GOP employee known to us as “The Prophet”, we’ve learned that Pat Brady has been industriously trying to squash this story instead of getting into the truth.
Mitt Romney’s nascent 2012 campaign, the Bill Brady for Governor, and the Mark Kirk for Senate campaigns are all involved in this…as the men who are striving to protect Lee Roupas overlap with the Romney, Brady, and Kirk teams perfectly. They are protecting their own in Roupas, and doing everything they can to destroy the people who are demanding an investigation into the truth.
They might as well be Obama Democrats, the way they are behaving.
Lee Roupas tried to force Eloise Gerson out of her position for asking for an investigation. Lee Roupas lied about when he received the information contained in the complaint against “The Prophet”, and in a July 16th, 2010 memo to GOP committeemen Roupas deliberately obfuscated and misrepresented the truth, claiming with great deceit that he did not “receive” this information until Gerson presented it.
We secured affidavits, which The Huffington Post published, that prove Roupas lied in that July 16th email. That alone should be grounds for his firing.
Ever since Gerson blew the whistle on all of this, Pat Brady has been working to save Lee Roupas – and to arrange a deal where “The Prophet” loses his Cook County GOP job, but then assumes a highly paid position as a GOP consultant here in Chicago…while maintaining his control of the Chicago Young Republicans social networking organization — which saves the Illinois GOP a fortune since “The Prophet” uses these young Republicans as non-paid campaign and office staff to support Lee Roupas.
It is the very definition of an incestuous relationship.
Behind the scenes, Pat Brady is being controlled by Beth Christie, a multimillionaire cougar who is the Illinois GOP’s #1 donor. Christie has told Brady to protect “The Prophet” and Lee Roupas at all costs, as these two young men are favorites of hers. The Illinois GOP is essentially bankrupt. Christie has been writing checks JUST large enough to keep it afloat, and to make payroll. She is VERY careful with the amounts of money she gives…always enough to keep the lights on, but never enough for the GOP to tell her to go to Hell (where she belongs), and end her control over them.
Beth Christie is the largest donor the GOP has ever had in Illinois. She knows it, and also knows she owns the party here the way she owns her many beautiful cars, her ridiculously posh residences, and all of her other toys.
This is a cougar with a vagina as insatiable as a Tatooine Sarlacc. Nothing escapes its gaping maw, and no man in the Illinois GOP, apparently, is able to stand up to whatever it desires. Take such a cougar, give it unlimited financial resources, and set it loose in the Illinois GOP and welcome to the mess we’re in now.
We are incredibly disappointed in Pat Brady today. No matter how much Beth Christie’s money and/or vagina means to the GOP in Illinois, it’s despicable that he chose to call us “fucking faggots”.
We know that politics is a bloodsport, and that it’s definitely not for the faint of heart.
But, Brady has taken zero ownership for the scandal rocking the GOP in Illinois…a scandal completely of his own making. To try to claim that “a bunch of fucking faggots is behind all of this”, and point to us, is just ridiculous.
Maybe we should have published that complaint against “The Prophet” detailing an attempted date rape upon a CYR member back in June of 2009 when we received it on July 1st, 2009. We didn’t because we thought the GOP would take care of this internally…and not promote “The Prophet” to a ridiculously high-paying position, without even bringing up the complaint in his interview, all because one lonely, sad, ridiculously wealthy cougar wanted her “Cuddles” to have a big-boy job.
Brady allowed one woman — Beth Christie — to essentially buy the Republican Party in Illinois and turn it into her personal play thing.
When Eloise Gerson, on June 11th, 2010, demanded an investigation into the dangerous frat party Lee Roupas was running in Cook County, Pat Brady worked with Lee Roupas, under the Sarlacc’s orders, to attack the truthtellers.
Lee Roupas declared open war against Eloise Gerson for bringing all of this to light. We have learned that Pat Brady approved that plan to attack Gerson, and to do anything possible to make sure the truth in all of this never came to light.
We would have never reported on any of this, if not for Lee Roupas trying to remove Gerson from her position.
So, if Brady wants to pull an Obama and blame this on anyone, he needs to look at Lee Roupas, not us.
And, while he is at it, if he wants to call anyone a “fucking faggot”, then Pat Brady needs to speak those words to Mark Kirk.
He is the absolute gayest man in any room he enters. He is the Republican Party’s Liberace. If anyone is a “fucking faggot”, to use Pat Brady’s own words, it is the closeted liar the GOP is running for the Senate in Illinois. A man who won’t come out because he’s using his reservist experience in the military as a crutch to get him elected, and admitting what a “fucking faggot” he is, to use Brady’s words, would mean he’d be discharged under DADT. This is all further complicated by the fact that hypocrite Kirk is AGAINST a repeal of DADT, when he is a gay man in uniform in the US military, actively speaking against allowing his fellow gay men and women to serve openly.
The GOP in Illinois is an absolute train wreck.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
Today we begin a call for the immediate removal of Pat Brady as the Illinois GOP Chair.
We demand the removal of Lee Roupas as the Cook County GOP Chair, and the removal of “The Prophet” as the president of the Chicago Young Republicans organization.
We demand an investigation into the influence Beth Christie, and the Elizabeth K. Christie Foundation, has exerted over the GOP in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and other states in which Beth Christie has decided to cultivate, groom, and protect her dangerous boytoys.
We want the GOP to clean house…and to make Illinois an example of just how far the party will go to make sure voters have a clear, ethical, distinction between corrupt Democrats, Obama, and what the Republican Party CLAIMS it is all about.
We “fucking faggots”, as Pat Brady has called us, are never going to let this go.
We have an interview booked today with one of the Big Three networks. We are going to be talking ALL ABOUT Beth Christie and what she has done to the party in this state, as well as how it feels to be called “fucking “faggots” by someone we admired greatly.
If you do not approve of the way the Obama Administration blames all of its colossal failings on Bush, then you should not accept Pat Brady’s attempts to blame his mistakes, and the coverup Lee Roupas engineered, on Democrats…or on us here at HillBuzz.
Many of you read us in states far away from Illinois, or in foreign countries, and you might wonder what this expanding soap opera has to do with you.
It matters because cleaning up the GOP in Illinois, the most corrupt of American states, is the first step in taking back this county. Voters WANT to boot Democrats from office, but believe there is no alternative.
Pat Brady, Lee Roupas, “The Prophet”, and Beth Christie discourage Americans from supporting the GOP…because they are just as bad, if not worse, than Democrats most days.
We all deserve better.
And, on a personal note, if you object to use being called “fucking faggots” by anyone, then we ask of you — we IMPLORE YOU — as our friends to stand up for us this week and let Pat Brady and the RNC know that you are not going to sit for a GOP State Chair using this sort of discriminatory and vile language against ANYONE.
We will always respect Pat Brady for the work he did in 2008…but our opinionof him has changed irrevocably as we’ve watched him desperately cover (in ludicrous and poor fashion) for Lee Roupas in this scandal.
Roupas was supposed to be a future Congressman or Senator, and it was supposed to be “his turn” some day soon…so the Illinois GOP has been protecting him as a member of that “it’s his turn” farm team…the one Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, and the rest of that cucumber-and-mayonnaoise Soggy Sandwich Society belongs to.
But, Roupas has ended his career by lying…and getting caught…and attacking a woman who demanded an investigation into the young ladies being abused in the Chicago Young Republicans organization.
For all intents and purposes, Pat Brady has now ended his political career as well.
That breaks our “fucking faggot” hearts, but the reality is that Pat Brady was in on this coverup from the very beginning…and he must be held accountable for that if the GOP is to have any credibility at all in this state.
A little soap for his own “fucking” mouth sure wouldn’t hurt, either.

UPDATE 8/1/10 1616hrs:
Some of you have been asking how we know Pat Brady called us “those fucking faggots”. Two days ago, Brady was trying to explain to a very wealthy conservative here in Illinois why the party was imploding because of things Lee Roupas has been doing in Cook County. That conversation was relayed to us because Brady’s performance was not only so unconvincing, but was deplorable.
Brady lied repeatedly to this big donor, and said that Roupas has done nothing wrong, despite:
(1) Lying about when he received the complaint against “The Prophet” (he says it wasn’t until June of 2010, but the affidavits and emails HuffPo has posted show he knew back in July of 2009, before he hired “The Prophet”). This lie includes sending the July 16th, 2010 email to the GOP committeemen under his Chair that told them he did not receive this complaint until after June 11th, 2010 — when he knew that to be false, and did that to coverup the fact that he never launched an investigation into what “The Prophet” was doing to women…but hired him anyway, because multimillionaire cougar Beth Christie told him to.
(2) Launching a scheme to oust Eloise Gerson from her post as Chicago GOP Chair when she demanded an investigation into why “The Prophet” was never investigated for what’s written in the complaint, and why the complaint never came up in his job interview
Both of the above are reasons Lee Roupas should be fired. Yesterday.
Instead of dealing with this, Brady decided to attack the people who have brought this story forward, and that includes us (as well as Eloise Gerson…whom Brady said would be “destroyed”, and that after the November elections she would be removed from her position).
Brady told this wealthy conservative that “this is all because of those fucking faggots. They are behind all this”. Meaning us, we presume.
But, who knows, he could have meant Mark Kirk being up to something.
Or Aaron Schock.
If someone in the GOP shouts “fucking faggot” in a room, about five dozen heads would turn around. It’s like shouting the same thing at Sidetracks. Only, you’d probably get at least a cosmo tossed in your face, and more likely than not have your face pounded.
Since Brady launched his nukes, we’re going to invoke Godwin’s Law here and say that today we feel like the Jews who get blamed for all the mistakes of others and the bad decisions of people in power. Brady had a meltdown, saw his lies failing him, and finds it increasingly harder every day to justify everything he is doing to save Lee Roupas.
So, backed against the wall, with this big conservative (and rumored homophobe) demanding an explanation (and with no Jews handy), Brady decided to blame “the fucking faggots”.
We’ll note again here that we could have made trouble with this complaint back in July of 2009 if we wanted. We don’t like “The Prophet” and have dozens of reasons for wanting to see him get his just desserts. But we never reported on any of this…not until Lee Roupas tried to orchestrate the removal of Eloise Gerson for speaking out about what was going on…and then later when Roupas sent that email directly lying to his committeemen about what was happening.
So, “fucking faggots” are not to blame for any of this.
Lee Roupas is to blame for this mess.
Pat Brady is to blame for this mess, for aiding and abetting Roupas.
Beth Christie is to blame for this mess, for demanding all the quid pro quos for her mammoth donations that caused all of these problems.
Don’t shoot the messengers…especially not just because they were gay…and especially not because they are the same gays you found so useful in the past when you wanted to seem inclusive and dynamic.
RESEARCH NEEDED: The Elizabeth K. Christie Foundation for the Cultivation and Protection of BoyToys, and its impact on the Illinois GOP
This weekend, we’ve booked two interviews about the growing scandal in the Illinois GOP, involving Cook County GOP Chair Lee Roupas and a coverup he was engaged in.
One reporter is from a national print magazine, and the other is a local Chicago paper. Both reporters are very interested in why the GOP has allowed one woman, multimillionaire cougar Beth Christie, to cause so much chaos in the state by dictating hiring and operations decisions for the Cook County Republican party.
One woman…limitless cash reserves…and possibly an intention to take down the GOP from within, by making sure inept, corrupt, time bombs waiting to explode are installed in key positions in the party.
That’s one theory we heard yesterday that’s worth looking into: could Beth Christie really be a Democrat in disguise, a Trojan donkey, doing the things she does to weaken the GOP by making sure people like Lee Roupas and “The Prophet” are retained in their positions, despite the damage they do to the party.
We doubt Christie’s a flavor of Evelyn Salt, and think she’s just a sad cougar who’s never heard of Craigslist or Rentboy, but it’s sure an interesting theory.
What IF Democrats decided to give the Republicans large donations, in states where Republicans are hurting for money…and what if the Democrats making those donations were then given de facto operational control of the GOP in those states, since the quid pro quo from their donations would allow them to staff those GOP offices with whomever they wanted. “I gave you all that money. Now, hire Cuddles, and no matter what Cuddles does, you can’t fire him. You can’t fire his friend Lee either, and if you do, then I’m gonna stop writing my checks, see? My lady cha-cha’s got a whole mess of zeroes after it, and if cha-cha’s not happy, then she talks to the hand and the hand says no more signatures on all those beautiful checks of mine”.
Reporters are generally very lazy.
If you think there’s really a Daily Planet office staffed with hundreds of people scurrying around to get all the backstory ready for Lois and Clark, you are dreaming. Most “journalists” work at home or from laptopsp these days. They have no staff. They do all of their own research, and if the research is boring or time-consuming, they just give up.
One reporter we talked to last night said he is “about 16 hours behind where I need to be on three stories”, which means he doesn’t have the time or energy to really dig deep enough.
That explainns JournoList to an extent as well: all of those Leftists on that site were lazy to a degree, and used each other’s ideas and bits of information to craft their own stories. The hive accomplished what each little hornet couldn’t on its own.
We want The Elizabeth K. Christie Foundation’s full influence and impact on the Illinois GOP documented and exposed — and Beth Christie’s days of calling the shots in Cook County to come to an abrupt and permanent end.
To achieve this, we need to do the research the “real reporters” out there can’t, or won’t do.
We need to pull the financial records for the following, using any access to LexisNexis or other search engines you may have:
(1) The Elizabeth K. Christie Foundation’s donations in the last two years
(2) The Illinois GOP’s revenue stream for the last two years
(3) The Cook County GOP’s revenue stream for the last two years
(4) The Chicago Young Republican social networking club’s revenue stream for the last two years
Once we have the data, we need those of you who are good at puzzle solving and chart-making to put together an easy-to-understand visiual representation of these relationships.
Who, besides Beth Christie, is a large donor to the Illinois GOP?
Are those people wielding cougar-grade influence on the party as well? If so, what games are they up to, and what are their agendas?
Could Beth Christie really be a Democrat operative/double agent working to take down the Illinois GOP from within by funding the cultivation and protection of incompentents the Democrats know will make terrible decisions throughout their political careers…and thus keep the GOP in Illinois mired in incompetence permanently?
Anything you could help dig up, and post in this thread, will help immensely in our meetings with reporters this weekend.
We have no intention of letting any of this go so long as Lee Roupas is Cook County GOP Chair and Beth Christie is allowed to buy her ticket to call the shots in the Republican party here in Illinois.
With Democrats so corrupt and hellbent on tanking this state, and the country, it’s time someone stood up to multimillionaire cougars and stopped whatever games they have been playing so grown-ups can lead the GOP here in Illinois again.
Since “real reporters” are too lazy, and actual GOP officials in the state don’t really seem to WANT to improve their chances of someday making this a red state, we guess all of this is for some reason up to us.

NEED INPUT: Was there ever a time when you had to call out someone you liked very much for doing something very bad?
We sincerely mean this, when we ask all of you daily readers — including those that have never commented before, or who do so infrequently — to chime in on this thread and give us your input and advice on something that is literally making us sick to our stomachs.
All day yesterday, we realized that we need to confront someone here in Chicago that we like very much and have respected more than few others. This person is Illinois GOP Chair Pat Brady, whom we got to know well through the 2008 campaign, and whom we absolutely think the world of. We can’t think of a day we cheered LOUDER and LONGER than the day we heard Brady had replaced Andy McKenna as the IL GOP Chair.
FINALLY, we thought, we’ve got someone who will do the right thing, won’t play games, and will make it his mission to clean up the corruption in this state.
FINALLY, we’ve got a guy at the helm we believe in, who will kick Republicans into shape the way Sarah Palin did in Alaska, when she cracked skulls and went after the All Boys Club.
So, we hope you can appreciate the gut-wrenching chagrin we’ve felt in the last few days as it’s become increasingly clear that Pat Brady — a personal hero — has been protecting Lee Roupas in the Cook County GOP. Brady could fire him today if he wanted. IF he wanted.
We’re working on one of the hardest essays we’ve ever had to write, about everything we’ve gotten confirmed in terms of what Brady’s been hiding for Roupas, and how Brady’s been strategizing with other Romney and Kirk guys in the GOP higher-ups to make the current GOP scandal here in Chicago fade from the headlines for a while…let the dust settle…and then resume open war with the truthtellers in this matter after November.
We’re being told — and it’s being confirmed from independent sources — that the aim is to protect Lee Roupas at all costs, make sure he keeps his job, and also to give “The Prophet” a lucrative consulting gig (funded by multimillionaire cougar Beth Christie, of course) that will pay him as much, if not more, than he was making as the $4,000/month Cook County Executive Director.
If all of this is true, then Brady’s in on the corruption in this state — and that horrifies us.
He is either the most brilliant actor who never took to the stage, or we let this man cast one Hell of a spell on us, because we just can’t imagine he would knowingly enable someone like Lee Roupas to retain his high-paying position, representing Republicans, after all the things Roupas as done to disgrace the party.
We just can’t tolerate this Old/All Boys’ Club nonsense. In corporate America. In politics. Wherever.
Just because someone has a penis does not mean that person can lie, engage in coverups, and carry on any way he damn well pleases…and expect to be protected and rescued the way Lee Roupas does.
It’s not right.
It’s not how America should be.
It’s not what voters in Illinois want, after seeing Democrat corruption go unchecked for so long.
Lee Roupas is the Cook County Charlie Rangle…and if Pat Brady is protecting him, then Pat Brady needs to be taken to the woodshed too.
And that’s devastating for us to have to admit.
So, we need two things from you this morning:
(1) We need you to pray for us, so that we have the wisdom and the guidance and the strength to do what we need to do here, because we’ll be damned if we allow Lee Roupas to get away with lying, covering up scandal, and declaring open war on Eloise Gerson for attempting to launch an investigation into the bizarre dealings of the Illinois GOP
(2) We need you to PLEASE think about a time when you had to confront someone you had great respect for, and tell that person they disappointed you, that they were wrong, and that they needed to step back and look at things differently to avoid making a horrible mistake
We’ve had to confront friends with drinking and drug problems who were ruining their lives — and to intervene and make sure they saw just how bad what they were doing looked.
Now, we find ourselves in a position of having to criticize a person we have utmost respect for, whom we believe to be a very good man…but who is allowing multimillionaire cougar Beth Christie (and her neverending threats of cutting off her donation stream, should she ever stop getting what she wants) to force him to protect Lee Roupas, save his job, and make sure “The Prophet” scores a golden parachute that lets him maintain the presidency of the CYR organization, and command a large “consulting” fee from the GOP that will in fact be more than he’s making now as the Executive Director.
We don’t seem to have quite the right words to describe what we think of Beth Christie, and how she’s bringing down the GOP in Illinois with her demands and money games, so maybe YOU could help us by telling us what YOU think of a woman who uses her vast fortune to cause such chaos — seemingly for her own personal amusement.
It’s frustrating because Pat Brady made us believe that the Republican Party REALLY COULD ultimately become what it claims it wants to stand for. We thought he’d be cracking skulls and getting things done…but, pardon the French, all he seems to be doing is kissing Beth Christie’s sorry cougar ass.
It’s no secret Brady as GOP State Chair is desperate for donations…but surely other large donors could step forward and provide whatever Beth Christie’s been giving to cause the damage she’s been doing to the party.
SURELY one woman can’t tank the entire state, just because she thinks she’s Jennifer Coolidge in an American Pie movie, and she’s excellent at signing her name to checks with large numbers on them.
Please be frank about your experiences in similar situations to ours. This is one of the most difficult things we’ve ever faced, because loyalty is one of the most important things to us…but loyalty to this country trumps personal loyalty to individuals…even to people we like as much as Pat Brady.
SOMEONE at GOP national has to put a stop to Beth Christie’s chaos spree. SOMEONE at GOP national has to fire Lee Roupas and install a Cook County Chair who can clean up this mess and crack some skulls.
We want that someone to be Pat Brady, because we know he has it in him.
We need your help understanding a time when YOU personally had to push someone you respect towards the right decision, even if powerful forces (of the cougar or non-cougar variety) were pushing him in the opposite direction.

Anatomy of a Scandal: Why conservatives nationwide should care about what Lee Roupas has done to the Cook County GOP

For the last week and a half, we’ve been reporting on a sex scandal and coverup rocking the Cook County GOP and the Chicago Young Republicans politically-flavored social networking club. This matter affects conservatives on a national level because it’s a case study in why Republicans continue to lose elections to Democrats, despite conservative policies remaining better for the vast majority of Americans. The reason conservatives lose is because there is something seriously wrong with the Republican Party from the bottom up. At the city, county, and state levels, the GOP is corrupt, and riddled with what we call “Romney Guys”: young, unscrupulous, protect-their-own-at-all-costs, opportunists and schemers who allow their own personal ambition and inability to accept responsibility for their actions to doom the conservative cause. Instead of acting in the best interests of conservatism, these Romney Guys are only in this for themselves, and make terrible decisions to advance their own careers as quickly as possible regardless of the damage that does to the party and the principles it advocates.
Lee Roupas, Chairman of the Cook County Republican Party, has created a distracting and damaging mess in Chicago by abusing his position to not only protect a fellow Romney Guy, but also to cater to a wealthy GOP donor who meddled in the daily operating affairs of the party at the county and city levels, much to the party’s detriment. Conservatives who wonder why the GOP so often stumbles need to pay close attention to the amount of influence large donors have on staffing decisions, particularly when those donors are interfering in hiring because they want to advance favored pets regardless of the impact they’d have on the organization.
What is happening in Chicago happens in the GOP in every city, and it’s time conservatives nationwide put a stop to it.
The Cook County GOP’s recent problems originate in June of 2009 with a complaint filed against a Board Member of the Chicago Young Republicans who tried to force himself sexually upon a young female member of the club. The complaint, copied to the national Young Republicans organization and Lee Roupas at the Cook County GOP, described the man (nicknamed “The Prophet” by members of the club, because of his chronic narcissism, profligate spending, and treatment of club members (both female and male) sexually) plying a young woman with alcohol, refusing to let her leave his apartment, taking her phone away so she could not call for help, pushing her onto a couch and sitting on her so she could not get up to leave, and not taking no for an answer. The young woman left Chicago shortly after this incident, but wanted to make sure the Chicago Young Republicans and the GOP in Chicago knew what “The Prophet” was doing to women, abusing the position of authority he had because of his prominence in the GOP-sanctioned club.
The woman was aware of similar incidents like this involving “The Prophet” and decided to make sure the GOP in Chicago knew what was going on, since GOP politicians regularly appeared at Chicago Young Republican functions onstage with “The Prophet”, fueling his ability to maintain the aura of privilege and power he needed to glamor women. Absent the credibility politicians like Aaron Schock, Bill Brady, Mark Kirk, Matt Murphy, Dan Proft, Andy McKenna, and others gave “The Prophet”, this skinny, blond, bespeckled man would lack the ability to put women in situations where he was able to victimize them. Dazzled by seeing “The Prophet” standing up on the stage, receiving warm kudos from someone like Congressman Schock, women fell for “The Prophet’s” regular lines that they needed to come back to his apartment, his VIP suite upstairs, his private office, or some other location where only they could hear all the political secrets he had to tell them, alone, because he thought they were so very special.
Essentially, the GOP in Illinois regularly gives a sexual predator the set, props, and audience he needs to do the very bad things he does to people.
The June 2009 complainant was a longtime female CYR member who saw a dangerous situation developing with “The Prophet” that the GOP in Illinois was partly responsible for, since they very much helped to create this monster and supplied him with the political mojo that kept his abuse of women going. She filed a complaint with the national Young Republicans organization and Lee Roupas at the Cook County GOP on July 1st, 2009 advising them to investigate the behavior of “The Prophet” so that women would not be seriously hurt by him. In her warning, she clearly stated her concern that what “The Prophet” did to her in his apartment on June 17th, 2009 seemed indicative of a dangerous pattern this man was engaged in — one that could lead to him keeping a woman against her will and forcing himself upon her sexually after he’d gotten her alone using his political razzle dazzle as a lure.
Since the GOP was providing this predator with his mojo, the GOP needed to stop enabling this behavior.
In July of 2009, the national Young Republican organization met in Indianapolis for its annual convention, where the complaint against “The Prophet” was circulated amongst Young Republican leadership. At the convention, several former YR members (aged out of the group after 40, but maintaining mentorship roles with the club) were given the complaint and advised of the serious situation unfolding in Chicago, where “The Prophet” was essentially swimming the YR waters like a shark, hunting for seals in this ample rookery. The YR leadership was put on notice that a predator was diligently at work in its Chicago chapter, on its board, basking in great glory provided by the Illinois GOP. This was a recipe for disaster, many agreed, and “The Prophet” received a stern talking to at the convention that put him on notice that he was jeopardizing the good name of the group by abusing his authority position to prey upon women in the club.
The former YR members who obtained the complaint against “The Prophet” at the Indianapolis convention disseminated it to a wider group of GOP confidants and advisors, with this wider circle largely befuddled on how to proceed. The Chicago Young Republicans is a politically-flavored social networking club in Chicago for young conservatives. It’s not technically a sanctioned part of the Illinois GOP and is not controlled by the Republican Party; it is, however, supported by both organizations in that the GOP supplies an endless stream of political candidates and representatives for CYR parties and events, without which the CYRs could not exist. The draw of being a dues-paying member of the club is gaining access to Senators, Congressmen, Governors, and national figures like RNC Chair Michael Steele. CYR members are attracted to the high-profile events, and the chance to further their careers by hobnobbing with such impressive luminaries, thereby winning bragging rights Monday morning when they show up at their offices with photos of themselves standing next to all of these elites.
Since “The Prophet” worked as a volunteer Board Member of an organization the Illinois GOP did not control (but funds generously, in addition to supplying the photo op star power), the excuse Republicans like Lee Roupas offer for “The Prophets’s” behavior is that “there wasn’t anything (they) could do about him”. They claim they couldn’t fire “The Prophet”, because they had never hired him, and that the Illinois GOP bore no legal responsibility for anything he did to CYR members.
But the question many in Chicago are asking this week is did the Illinois GOP bear any MORAL responsibility, since they lent their brand and star power to “The Prophet”, and it was widely known this predator depended on both to successfully lure and abuse his victims.
The Republican Party has a problem with perceptions and reality.
Too many GOP officials are bad lawyers, who went to bush league law schools, and emerged from three years of lackluster study with a myopic view of the law and the ramifications of an organization’s actions. Lee Roupas is maintaining, to this day, that the Cook County GOP cannot be held legally responsible for anything “The Prophet” did to women, and that should absolve both Roupas and the GOP from any culpability in all matters related to “The Prophet”. But, to the public at large, the line between the Illinois GOP and the Chicago Young Republicans was blurred so many times that many attendees of CYR events believed the two organizations were in fact connected, if not one and the same. Roupas shared a stage and a microphone with “The Prophet” at so many events that many members believed Roupas, in fact, worked for “The Prophet”. The Illinois GOP, however, kept listening to bad legal advice and took false comfort in the fact that, on paper, technically, according to their interpretation of the law, they had no authority to stop “The Prophet” — while in reality, the way the general public saw it, this was in fact the duty the GOP charged itself with every time the GOP built “The Prophet” up higher by pumping him, and his ego, full of star power.
In July or early August of 2009, a prominent Chicago attorney was given a copy of the complaint against “The Prophet” that circulated at the Indianapolis YR convention. Realizing how much this could damage the GOP, because of all the star power the GOP lent “The Prophet”, this attorney telephoned Lee Roupas to make sure he knew what was going on and how “The Prophet” was victimizing women in the CYR organization. On the telephone call, Roupas received in great detail all the information that was contained in the complaint. This is important to note, because in July of 2010, Roupas denied knowing about the charges leveled against “The Prophet” until June of 2010. There exists a signed affidavit from this attorney swearing that he provided Roupas with this information a full year before Roupas is owning up to (this, in fact, directly contradicts an email Lee Roupas sent to the 80 Cook County GOP committeemen on July 16th, 2010 where he swears to them that he did not “receive” the complaint until June 11th, 2010…where Roupas, acting on bad legal advice, is playing semantics with the word “received”, and not counting the telephone call he “received” in July or August of 2009 because Roupas realized he had never been given the complaint via registered mail and he believed he could legally deny being provided with a copy until a well-documented letter “received” by many members of the GOP included it).
This is where the crux of the problem rests for the GOP, and why this matter may have originated with a delusional, self-aggrandizing, womanizing “Prophet” but ends up being about the coverup and lies concocted by Cook County GOP Chair Lee Roupas.
For almost a year, the GOP in Illinois knew “The Prophet” was a problem, and that he abused his position of authority to have his way with women (and, we note, more than a few men as well). While the GOP claimed it had no ability to rein this behavior in with the CYRs, it should take responsibility for hiring “The Prophet” to a high-paying position with the Cook County GOP in December of 2009…five months AFTER the GOP was put on notice this man was a problem when the July 2009 complaint was filed.
Sometime in the summer or fall of 2009, “The Prophet” caught the eye of a multi-millionaire cougar in Chicago named Beth Christie, newly retired from the CEO suite of Avent Baby Products. Christie, seemingly bored, with more money than she knew what to do with, and an appreciation for the company of young men, became “The Prophet’s” protectress and bankroller. Running up a $50,000 tab for parties and a marketing blitz he could not pay for, “The Prophet” went to this cougar and asked her to bail him out, which she did happily by giving a lump sum to the CYRs and another large donation to the Cook County GOP, provided they loan the CYRs most of that money to pay off “The Prophet’s” debt.
In December of 2009, “The Prophet” was fired from a staff position on a political campaign when the complaint against him became an unwanted albatross as primaries drew near. Beth Christie stepped forward and made the cash-strapped Illinois GOP a deal it did not refuse: she’d write a check for $100,000 and become one of only 6 large donors to the GOP in this state, but only if “The Prophet” was given a high-paying job with the Cook County GOP under Lee Roupas.
Desperate for the money, the Illinois GOP took the deal, and “The Prophet” was hired to work as Roupas’ second in command in Cook County. Not having a college degree, and having no good references from any position he worked in, this was the only way “The Prophet” could find gainful employment.
This deal between Beth Christie and the GOP happened despite the fact Lee Roupas received the complaint against “The Prophet”, as affidavits attest, back in July of 2009. Without investigating the complaint, speaking to the victim involved, or inquiring whether other women (and men) in the CYR organization had been victimized by “The Prophet”, Roupas awarded this man a high-paying, high-profile position with the Cook County GOP organization — because Beth Christie pressured the GOP to do this, lest she develop crippling hand cramps that would prevent her from writing any more big checks.
Because of the cougar’s protection, “The Prophet” was seated on the dais next to her at every prominent event that followed, where “The Prophet” was able to suck up even greater star power, whirling on the arm of a woman who’d seemingly buy him anything he dreamed of. Roupas was there, seated on her other side, doing whatever it took for him to keep Beth Christie happy, so that she’d never put that checkbook away.
All of this came to a head on June 11th, 2010 when Chicago GOP Chairwoman Eloise Gerson obtained a copy of the complaint filed against “The Prophet” back in July of 2009. That complaint never stopped circulating (check your mailbox, your copy might arrive today), and was never investigated by the GOP, especially after Beth Christie took such a sudden and bizarre interest in the development and promotion of “The Prophet”. When Gerson read about what “The Prophet” did to the young female CYR member, she immediately contacted other women in the group and asked them about their experiences with “The Prophet”. What she discovered horrified her: this was not an isolated instance, but was rather par for the course with the man involved. Gerson was told this behavior was common for “The Prophet”, at every event the CYRs held, including many in which the GOP went out of its way to praise him, build him up, shine a spotlight on him, and give him the star power he needed to glamor the women (and men) he wanted.
Gerson called for an investigation into this complaint against “The Prophet”, as well as an inquiry into why he was hired by the Cook County GOP with this sort of reputation preceding him. ”The Prophet”, it must be noted, is a college drop-out with very limited work experience. The position Lee Roupas hired him into is one that typically requires at bare minimum a Bachelor’s degree (which “The Prophet” does not possess). That requirement, and his moral failings, was deliberately ignored because Beth Christie wanted this man to have that job. Defying Christie meant losing access to her checkbook, which is something Roupas was not allowed to do.
Because Lee Roupas was so afraid of alienating multimillionaire cougar Beth Christie, he instead attacked Eloise Gerson, declaring open war on her for calling for an investigation into that complaint and the Cook County GOP’s hiring practices.
Roupas set in motion a bizarre scheme to vote Gerson out of her position and remove her as Chairwoman. When that failed, Roupas brought an ally from GOP national into Chicago and created a new position for him in the Cook County hierarchy that would usurp all of Gerson’s authority in hopes of shutting her up.
Roupas doubled-down on this coverup because, as he’s claiming to the angry committeemen he’s dealing with now that this scandal has hit the media, Beth Christie cannot be defied and he is not allowed to address the complaint or the reason he hired someone without a degree or appropriate work experience to such a high position in the Cook County GOP.
The reason voters, who may naturally be conservative, don’t trust the Republicans with their votes is because of men like Lee Roupas and the conduct of GOP county organizations like that here in Chicago.
The standard operating procedure for the GOP when faced with any problem seems to be:
(1) Lie
(2) Ignore the problem
(3) Lie
(4) Deny there’s a problem
(5) Lie
(6) Coverup the problem
(7) Lie
(8) Attack the truthtellers who exposed the problem
(9) Lie
(10) Stonewall and wait it out, hoping people lose interest in this
Yesterday, we were told the Illinois GOP’s plan for moving forward on this is to placate Eloise Gerson until the November elections, after which they will remove her. Beth Christie has forbidden the Illinois GOP from firing her favorite Cook County employee, and Lee Roupas is a golden boy highly favored by the current Illinois GOP chair. The plan is to get everyone in the GOP to pretend none of this happened, and then after the election they’ll “take care of Eloise” so that she can’t make any more noise about this in the future. With Eloise destroyed, the Illinois GOP hopes other truthtellers will be too afraid to come forward, for fear of the same thing happening to them.
The end result is that Cook County will still be led by Lee Roupas, who has lost all credibility in his position and has proved himself to be a hack at best, and largely nothing more than a tool of a very wealthy woman who essentially uses the GOP as her own personal doll house. ”The Prophet” will keep his job, too, because Beth Christie insists upon this, regardless of what damage of all this does to Republicans’ chances of winning statewide elections in Illinois. As long as Christie keeps writing those massive checks, she can have any doll she wants, and she can play with him any way she pleases.
It’s a damn shame no one has introduced Beth Christie to Craigslist, because there’s a whole section for women just like her, where she can meet men twenty years younger that won’t cost her over a hundred and twenty thousand dollars to keep gainfully employed. This is even more absurd when you consider the fact that so few large donors contribute to the GOP in Illinois (only 6 people giving $25,000 or more) that Christie overpaid for the clout she’s enjoying, dramatically so. For the amount of money she’s thrown into creating her doll house, Christie could have bought her way into the Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan GOP organizations as well — and could have had play time in a four state radius whenever, and wherever, whim struck her.
There are some pretty cute young dudes in Wisconsin, let us assure you. Milwaukee’s chock full of them.
Conservatives nationwide need to critically examine their own city, county, and state GOP organizations and look for the undue influence of wealthy donors like Beth Christie on the hiring, strategic, operational, and other decisions made by their local Republican Party.
What’s happening here in Chicago is important because it highlights the fact that a single multimillionaire cougar was able to jeopardize Republican chances in the fall by demanding her favorite doll receive a high-level position in the organization, in the face of her threats to put away her checkbook if she did not get her way. How many bad decisions are made by the GOP each and every day because men like Lee Roupas insist they have no choice but to do whatever crazy or stupid thing they are doing, lest they upset a Beth Christie somewhere? It’s never the initial crime (in this case, the predatory actions of “The Prophet”) that dooms Republicans, but their fumbled, bumbled lies and coverups (which always fall) that doom them.
Small dollar GOP donations — giving $5, $25, or maybe $100 — pooled together dwarf the amounts given by Beth Christie and others, but because they are thousands of small contributions made at random by unaffiliated donors, they will never carry the weight of one check written with an agenda in Chicago. One cougar’s ga-rowwwwl drowns out thousands of regular people.
The GOP’s system is clearly broken, and the way it handles problems like “The Prophet” is the clearest explanation we have ever seen for why Republicans lose so many winnable elections.
This is a center-right country of largely conservatives Americans. But, the GOP is comprised, organizationally, mainly of young, ambitious, cutthroat, “Romney Guys” who don’t see the big picture of what’s best for conservatism, only what will help them advance to the next level and make more money so they can buy more blue blazers, Brooks Brothers ties, and khaki pants. Lee Roupas clearly had a choice: to either stand up to Beth Christie and refuse to hire her “Prophet”, because the baggage he carried with his behavior was potentially damaging to the GOP…or to cave into her demands because he wanted to keep advancing his career and he knew that upsetting a large, cougarized donor was not the way for him to get ahead.
Everyone who ordered Roupas to give Beth Christie everything she wanted should be fired along with him.
The Republican Party in Illinois needs to clean house, de-cougarize, and spray for Roupas.
Small dollar donor conservatives need to band together and demand the RNC investigate this Cook County mess, and determine why, exactly, one wealthy woman was allowed to cause so much chaos by protecting one bad apple with her vast fortune.
What’s been happening here in Cook County is a chance for conservatives coast to coast to grasp what’s wrong with the Republican Party at the city, county, and state levels…so that we can use the next two years to weed out the Lee Roupases and mitigate the influence of the Beth Christies so that the likes of “The Prophet” don’t keep Republicans from beating Obama and taking back Washington in 2012.
Too much is at stake to allow the GOP to keep making the same mistakes, every day, in the same spectacular fashion, while expecting different results.
