No fly zone instigated over oil spill. What’s that all about?

WHY don’t they want anyone flying over it? And what if Bush had done this during/after Katrina? The left would have gone completely bananas!
I was flying back from Orlando into NOLA last Wednesday and I believe we were just over a small part of the slick. Could see one burning operation going and about 20-30 skimmers. Hard to tell at cruising altitude how bad it was though.
I am really bothered by the lack of media access to this. Sure it’s hard to get to since it’s out in the Gulf and sure they don’t want every journalist under the sun constantly tying up personnel to get video and info but couldn’t they take a small plane/helicopter out daily with a handful of “pool” media and maybe a boat or two with some more “pool” media with the understanding that they share their video and taped comments with the larger media group?
This is damage control 101 as far as I can tell. Don’t let the public know what is really going on. It’s the same way with the financial situation and a ton of other topics being super managed by this “transparent” WH. /sarc

The FAA put out a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen: it’s a warning to pilots)that there were burn operations going on in the Gulf starting on June 11. The burn operations can cause a sigficant amount of smoke that can make flying in the area hazardous.
Anybody happen to catch Huckabee on FOX last evening? The program was devoted to the myriad ways to suck up the oil in the gulf, on shore and in the marshes. Zippy and his straw need not apply. Each solution demonstrated was ecologically sound and recyclable. What I found utterly appalling — but not surprising — is how the men who appeared on the show and their companies have been ignored for 50+ days by both BP and the bureaucratic brain trust that runs our government. The show repeats tonight, don’t miss it, a real eye-opener. Oh … as if the oil spill isn’t already bad enough, the first tropical storm of the season is brewing … only God knows what “Alex” may portend for the area.
Gov. Huckabee’s program was excellent and inspiring…and infuriating at how people have been ignored by Prez Kickassicantsuckitupwithastraw. Now he equates the oil spill with 9/11. A radical Jihadi oil spill, I guess.
He didn’t! Oh geez … yeah, cuz 11 oil rig workers dying is exactly the same as 3000 Americans dying in high rises and airplanes on 9/11.
Idiot. He really thinks we are all idiots.

Man, oh man.
The mood is rather bleak in my corner of Virginia. I heard this week that GE is packing up and leaving my town. Also FEMA is taking 300 jobs elsewhere. That hits a town of 25k pretty hard.
My general feeling is the entire economy is afraid to hire and expand. Waiting for the next shoe to drop from Washington. My hope is a complete overhaul of Congress will give the nation some hope. I hope the upcoming GOP Congress is up to the task before it.
I’m in Northern Virginia and every day I see more For Lease signs on office and retail buildings And, this is supposed to be a recession-proof area. Sales people at the Macy’s next to my office say they are just waiting for them to shut the place down, it is that dead. I am in the medical field and we are certainly feeling it. Just taking one day at a time.
Here in Oregon, it has been half empty strip malls and office parks for years now. The Dems who run this state babbled about biotech as a savior, when that didn’t pan out they talked about high tech jobs; when that went bust, they switched to “green” jobs. Heaven knows what they will push next, especially as they succeeded in getting the voters here to pass taxes on the “rich” and on business earlier this year. Our local rag opined the other day that this might not have been the smartest move in a recession. Duh. . .
Let us all hope that those politicos get to enjoy the unemplyment line.
nelly I grew up in Pittsburgh where those kind of pie in the sky promises have been going on for decades (a convention center, a new stadium, riverboat gambling will save our economy), while all the jobs fled along with most of the young people. But we all still voted democrat like the zombies we were. Though to be fair, we actually did experience some green shoots thanks to Carnegie Mellon and tech related industry, and also the hospital center and related services.
Obama is a total failure as president of the United States of America. The tragedy is that his incompetence and corruption will continue to shred and tear apart the entire fabric of this great country for two more years, after which we may not be able to salvage the remnants.

Down south in my neck of the woods in South Carolina, Republicans and conservatives are chuckling and chortling over DeMint’s new Democrat challenger and the utter chagrin of the SC Democrats. We are trying very hard to keep a respectful, straight face. DeMint, probably the most popular pol in South Carolina, has been challenged to a debate by the Hon Mr. Greene.
When tempted to discouragement, keep in mind that while the Dems are duplicitous and corrupt…they can also be really, really stupid. Even stupider than the cream-cheese cucumber tea sandwiches in the GOP.
Let me assure you, it was no GOP plot to put the addled but maybe sincere guy on the Dem ticket. We are deciding to be very nice to Mr. Greene. Bless his heart.
Just as background, the abominable, vile, ill bred couple, the Fowlers, are in charge of the SC Dems. You may remember Mrs. Fowler who made the vulgar remark about Sarah shortly after her nomination, that her qualifications were limited to the fact that she has had no abortions? And her wad of a spouse was recorded in flight rejoicing to a companion about natural disasters that would be useful against Bush. They are laughably stupid, and they are how Mr. Greene got on the ticket.
Mr. Greene seems to have some charges filed against him regarding some pornography and an adult woman. We’ll see if this is an actual crime, or whether it’s something Joe McGinniss could get away with.
Keep up with the story, hillboyz–Alvin Greene is going to be very helpful. Watch the southern Dems try to demonize their new African-American senatorial candidate.

Robert, why on earth would you say something like that? First of all it is absolutely horrific to matter-of-factly bring up a “take him out” situation of our president. Something like that would throw our country into bedlam. And to discuss it openly here puts Hillbuzz in a situation where the site can be criticized because “users are calling for the president’s assassination”. I’m thinking about a lot of things today (multi-tasking, LOL). But one that’s sticking out is this request that O is making for congress to send more money to help out those poor poor union members:

You know, if I were a union member I’d be screaming bloody murder about now. It’s obvious that the unions are extremely rich. If they weren’t they wouldn’t be able to spend billions on the november elections, nor on busing and paying members to protest things. So, why aren’t the union members coming up to the unions and telling them flat-out that they (the unions) are supposed to be there for the benefit of their members; and, as such, they (the unions) should be kicking in to make up for the missing money to save union member jobs, union member paychecks, union member benefits, and union member pensions during this recession.. instead of spending all that money on political campaigns! Come on, union members! Start talking among yourselves- the union is supposed to help YOU when things are tough- NOT use YOUR MONEY to help a rich political candidate instead of helping YOU!
Actually the unions are in deep trouble with their pensions. If the unions don’t find several hundred billion to cover the shortfall it will collapse completely within the next 5-10 years. Where did the money go? Ask the union leadership.
If they are in that deep trouble, how can they be already talking about spending millions (or was it billions) towards the november democrat incumbent elections? Perhaps the pension funds are in trouble, but the unions THEMSELVES appear to be flush with $ to be sending busloads of people all over, paying the people in the buses to protest, and paying for advertisements for candidates. If I were a union member I’d start demanding all that money be used to help boost the pension fund instead of the pockets of the political candidates. That is, IF the unions are going to even PRETEND to be “for” the union members, and not just for a political party.
My brother is a union member. He thought he could retire in Jan. then it was July now the union rep told him he needs to wait until Sept. I’ve told there is no money in the pension fund and he gets all mad and huffy about it-total denial.
SusFL- he needs to start talking to other union members there and tell them how their union has so much money it’s going to spend for candidates in November… and that they need to put that money into the pension fund to help THEM instead! Once union members start talking among themselves about this, it’s going to grow and grow; eventually MAYBE the union leaders will HAVE to take action to put that $ to better use to help their members instead of rich candidates! But it takes the union members talking among themselves about this to get it going…
If they’d use the union dues to provide for the members, rather that supporting political campaigns, maybe things would be a whole lot different. The intent of the unions became tainted and as soon as it became about power (ego) and moved away from protecting workers rights, these organizations set themselves up to be a magnet to all that is negative and destructive. Like attracts like and ill-intended union activities have attracted corruption.

They are not concerned with the solvency of the pension plans. The Federal Government will take it over and pay out the payments as promised. GM and Chrysler are banking on that to happen also. The Federal Government “insures” pension plans and takes them over when they become insolvent. This is one reason for all of the Airline bankruptcies – they got out of their pension plans and the federal government took them over.
This is one of the steps for the government to get into and take over everyone’s pension and retirement plans.
Well, this is the point. Shouldn’t the union MEMBERS start talking about this and exposing it for the rotting carcass it is? All that money sitting in the union’s coffers so they can use it for the democratic party- and the government has to bail out their pensions when our government is already in deep doodoo? I think it’s time for some of these union MEMBERS to open their eyes and open their mouths!!! …before it’s too late for our country….
Their pension funding is averaging in the low to mid 60 percentage range. Meaning for every dollar they spend they are only collecting about 62 cents in dues/fees.
Hence the support behind Obamacare to rid themselves of insurance cost, and urgency behind “card check” legislation to increase their membership ranks, ie. make it easier.
Everyone needs to watch this closely. Corporate business world is. The legislation is in committee, lets hope it dies there.
November is needed quickly.

Yep! Union pensions are in big trouble. Recently, there was a bill in Congress to bail those private pensions out. Not sure what happened with that.

Exactly, a recent example is the SEIU spending $30 million in legal fees to defend against a splintering of their own union in 3 southern states. They spent a ridiculous amount of money (Craig Becker was lead atty) to keep their parasitic first position at the proverbial trough.

No way to Capri: too many tour boats, long lines, and crowds. It would be OK if we had spent a few nights there and enjoyed Capri after the crowds return to the mainland, but we didn’t want to waste a day being frustrated fighting the madness.
Hubby and I stayed in Anacapri for 2 nights. You are right, that’s the only way to do it.
My sister and I went to Italy in November/December 2008 – for the express reason of fewer crowds, better temperatures (not into hot hot temp.) and cheaper. Capri was lovely and hot enough and not very many people.

I am a small business owner myself (very small- just me and my husband working from home) in the multimedia design business here in Chicago (web, print, graphics, animation, video, audio, etc.)
Work has not been hard to find, and we’re as busy as we can handle, but I did notice one major impact of the recession… no one is getting paid very quickly. The big clients are delaying payments or cutting back terms (from a Net 7 to a Net 30, Net 45…) with their contractors, who then have to delay payments to us… we have been up to three months behind on getting paid, and are worried about the bills despite working every day (7 days a week) for long hours.
Yet somehow, the people we have to pay bills to won’t accept us being 30-60 days late on OUR payments! Imagine that!
The recession is really impacting people’s willingness to let go of their money to actually pay people, and it’s affected ALL of my clients and therefore me.
I do computer/network consulting (little one Caveman operation) and I’ve been talking to my accountant about what’s gonna happen next year. Basically if your a small business owner you need to buy at least a 55-gallon drum of K-Y Jelly cause your going to need it. And no, I’m not trying to be humorous.

Looks like Mike Rogers over at BlogActive.com may be getting ready to out yet another GOP closet case from Illinois. Like Mark Kirk, this is yet another Republican hypocrite in Congress who betrays his fellow gays on big votes. Actually Aaron Schock has been anti-gay MUCH more often than Kirk. I’m surprised Rogers’ didn’t out him a long time ago. Of course Schock hasn’t been in Congress long. He was born in 1981. I think he’s still the youngest member. He also fancies himself one of the most conservative.
And just like in Kirk’s case, you guys at HillBuzz were way in front on this one too.
Please keep your comments focused on the real issue and try to avoid obvious statements about how cute his outfit is. And yes, it’s very cute. LOL

I’m willing to be outed as gay (for political purposes) just like all the liars in politics have been willing to lie that they are heterosexual (for political purposes) even though it’s not true, in either case.

The obvious answer of course is that Mark Kirk and all politicians should just be honest about their lifestyle from the beginning. It’s Kirk’s own fault for putting himself in a position where he could be outed and shown to be a liar by a fellow gay man (Mike Rogers).
The issue of sex obviously did matter to Kirk. It mattered so much he felt the need to lie about it, just like he lied about his military record on a constant basis over 10 years.
The issue isn’t who he has sex with. I frankly don’t care. It’s the lying and the fact that we’ll never know how many of his earlier votes as a congressman were compromised by a fear of being outed before now.
The hypocrisy with respect to Rahm and Obama has nothing to do with their sexual orientation. It relates to positions they and others on the left take on LGBTQ issues when campaigning versus what they do after getting elected.
Similarly, if in fact Kirk and Schock are gay, the hypocrisy is in how they have represented themselves to voters versus how they live their private lives. For you to suggest that they are hypocrites for voting a particular way on LGBTQ issues suggests that all homosexuals think and feel the same way about such issues — a decidedly leftist way of looking at people.

Instead of boycotting paypal, youtube, google, etc., for conducting their businesses with an obvious leftist slant and for applyign different standards for different activities, some enterprising people should start competing enterprises that either cater to conservatives or remain steadfastly neutral.

Things are not great, but not terrible here in central Indiana. The malls, shops and restaurants seem to be fairly busy, though not as busy as they were 2 or 2.5 years ago. And I have actually seen some new openings in previously vacant spots.
I was in southern Indiana (Brad Ellsworth territory) last week touring a manufacturing facility for work. I asked the guy showing me around (40 year employee, born and raised in the area) whether they were staying busy. He said they were getting by, but had been at 30 hr shifts for more than a year. I said something like it seems like people are just trying to survive until November, and he said “you got that right.” Not a big surprise for this part of the country.
I don’t know any die hard Obama fans, but those I know that voted for him seem to have become very, very quiet.

One minute they are actually blaming Obama for the oil spill, and then they are blaming the GOP for it.
So, they just wait for Obama to come out and “give his line” and just parrot it whatever he says.
My brother was and is still a rabid Obama supporter. I asked him the other day if he thought Obama was doing a good job. He still thinks so (I knew he couldn’t admit otherwise). He said that no person could deal well with all the problems in the world today. So there are still those who refuse to see the obvious. On the other hand, I have talked to many people who are very disillusioned with Obama…and that’s here in Minnesota, the land of liberal lunacy.
NJ is a pharmacutical hub for the country. Lots of R&D along with production. We’ve lost thousands of jobs in that industry and that was BEFORE Dr. Utopia’s health care “reform” debacle.
Here in my little corner of the “shore”, we’re losing small businesses at a fast rate. Pizza places, sub shops, even dollar stores!! In this small town we lost 2 pet shops in the last year. And we lost a Wendy’s. Last time the family flew, we hired a car to take us to the airport. The driver was a retired teacher who couldn’t make his property tax payment and took a job as a limo driver. We’re all hoping Chris Christie can stop the bleeding.

There is a little shop I go to once a year for supplies for DH annual fishing trip. The mall is a little set back from the road, but has always had open shops. This year the owner waited on me himself, there didn’t seem to be any help there as in the past. Most of the other store fronts were vacant. I have also noticed more vacancy signs as I’m driving around.
On a positive note, DH says his group saw more boats being hauled to and from his fishing resort. Also, the resort was about full this year, last year it was almost deserted. The resort is about 14 hrs. from our house, so they had lots of time to observe what toys were being hauled around.
As for the Obots, I no longer hang around with the group they are part of, just couldn’t take it any longer.
Considering that Obama has no reservations about using cusswords on National tv, and everything he does seems to be the direct opposite of what the American people want, and he did identify himself as Black on the census, I am dubbing him as:
The First BLACK-ASS-WORD president.

In my little town in southern CA, the chains are the businesses that have picked up and left town. Starbucks and Hollywood Video have both closed, Fresh and Easy and Stater Bros. both halted plans to build new stores. The local businesses have been able to remain open for the most part…although some friends of mine who opened a gym up here had to close after just a few months.
I’m really hoping some brave sole will open an indie coffee shop/cafe in the old Starbucks suite. I miss my coffee!! And its a really good location for something like that…
I don’t get this Obama always announcing days ahead of time that he is going to address something. Did other presidents do this? During a crisis? Just don’t get it.
You see, it takes days for other people to come up with ideas/thoughts, write them up for him to say, and load them into the ever present teleprompters. He also has to practice sounding somewhat sincere about what he is spewing out. Also his handlers have to review the scheduling on the various media channels so he can pre-empt “enemies” like Rush, Mark Levin, etal if possible. So you see, it is quite a complex undertaking, this speechifing of “president” Barry.
Oh, I thought maybe it was so I could lay awake nights in anticipation of the “event”. It is sooooo reassuring knowing he is going to address the nation about this. I hope Muchelle is by his side since I can’t wait to see her latest dress; such a fashion icon, that woman.

No one mentions that he attended the memorial service for those who died in the mine disaster a month or more ago. That was a private industry. So is the industry that these 11 were working for. He can’t pick and choose where he will attend. And he can’t be seen as the “fundraiser in chief” during these kinds of events. No wonder he invited the families of those who died to the White House. That was a quickie decision and he probably was told to do so because of backlash.

Yeah, but would not take my original and I forget why. I have a lot of interruptions and my computer experience is a few minutes here and a few minutes there. Thus I didn’t have time to deal with being rejected. I will try again when I have time and attention span to do so.
I live about 25 miles north of Houston in a community of about 60K…mostly very conservative. Businesses are doing well for the most part. We are getting a new theatre, few new restaurants, our mall is fairly full. No evidence of Obama support anywhere.

The mood in my area of the country? Grim. I live on the Gulf Coast, right along the Alabama/Florida border. The fishing industry has stopped…the tourism is stopping…related jobs are being affected now and will continue to be so at a growing rate.
We see Obama as doing NOTHING to help. His photo-ops are disgusting when he goes back to golfing and dinner parties. We might as well make drilling the new industry here, because the local economy is otherwise screwed. Make the Gulf Coast the new drilling capital of the US…provide jobs for all those who have lost theirs or will be losing theirs. Mr. Etheridge knew he had crossed the line and tried to make a friendly photo-op with his arm around the “Student”.
Many libs and trolls on other sites are saying the “student” is not being fair by keeping his identity blurred on the video. Well, maybe it is blurred because he is a minor; children are usually blocked out due to privacy and protection laws and/or protocols. Whoa! If a minor, the congressman is in even deeper ca-ca than we think.
The student’s identity is irrelevant. They just want to give the student the “Joe the Plumber” treatment.
I don’t think Etheridge tried to make a friendly photo op at all. As far as I’m concerned, this was an out and out assault. There is no way you put your hands on anyone. Did you see the way he grabbed him around the neck? If I were that child’s parents, I would file assault charges.
He’s having a press conference in fifteen minutes, watch him lie and squirm.
In Etheridge’s apology he says, (Caps added for emphasis)

So, he is not civil and behaves this way in private discourse?

A lot of shops and restaurants have gone out of business in my town in the last year and a half. It’s depressing driving through town and seeing all the empty storefronts and “for rent” signs. Also, my son ran a mail order business for many years, but is now in the process of shutting it down and selling off what remains of his inventory because he no longer receives enough orders to make it viable.
