Saturday Open Thread: February 27th, 2010
What’s on your minds this Saturday?
********
Be creative and help us come up with some ideas for patriotic superhero costumes that are original and not Superman, Uncle Sam, etc. We have a party to go to in June that’s superhero themed, and we want to make some really great, pro-America, superhero costumes that we can wear not only for that, but for Fourth of July, Tea Parties, and Halloween too (more bang for the buck).
We want to do some original things…like maybe a male version of the Statue of Liberty…something like that. We’d like to great a set of four characters…and have a couple months to pull it off, so any help brainstorming would be great.
Would people “get” a male Statue of Liberty…like he’s a “Son of Liberty”? Or is that too random.
Remember, in Chicago, we tried a male Medusa (a Mandusa) last year, and no one got it (they thought it was Cleopatra). SO, nothing can be too cerebral.
Any ideas?
****************
Are you aware of everything Roger Ebert has gone through the last few years? He’s going on Oprah on Tuesday to talk about it, and it’s one of those rare occasions when we’ll tune into the Charybdis of Lake Michigan, because our hearts go out to Ebert. He had mouth and jaw cancer which stole his ability to speak. His whole lower jaw was removed. It’s horrifying really, but the man has not been broken and continues to appear in public to talk about movies, using a computer like Stephen Hawking, no matter what he looks like.
We really admire his spirit and his ability to get passed the physical aspect of what’s happened to him. It’s incredible.
Ebert’s a man we never much liked, because we always thought of him as an ass. In 2004, we met him at a book signing on Michigan Avenue and he was rude and surly to people who waited a long time in line to meet him. In retrospect, he was probably already suffering from the cancer, so the rudeness makes a lot more sense. Usually, people in the entertainment and political worlds are really nice in person, because they know their livelihoods depend on it. They might be rude in a restaurant or in an elevator where there are no cameras around, but they’ll be all smiles for hours at book signings or movie premiers or whatever, because that’s when they are “on” and that’s when they know their checks depend on good performance.
So, it’s a reminder to always give people the benefit of the doubt. And it’s always appropriate to reevaluate your opinion of someone if you find out new information that gives insight into their bad behavior. The same is true for David’s mother, Louella, who was horrible to all of us, but Sebastian most especially. She mad Bast’s life a living Hell for three years, but now that we know she has Alzheimer’s, her behavior makes a lot more sense, and we’ve let go a lot of the negative feelings we had towards the woman because we can see how she wasn’t really “all there” when we knew her.
If there’s anything worse than losing a jaw to cancer, it’s Alzheimers, which is probably the worst disease we can imagine. We would not wish that on anyone. Not even Louella.
So, tomorrow at mass, if you go, if you could find room in your prayers for both Louella and Ebert, we’d appreciate it. We have no idea how much they are suffering, but there are people out there who love them both very much, so we hope you will ask for comfort and respite, as much as possible, for the two of them. We promise to return the favor for you if ever you need anything fabulous done here in Boystown that we can lend our own particular skills to. But a coast to coast infusion of positivity towards Louella and Ebert can only help, and certainly can’t hurt, so we hope you will consider doing that.

I am thinking of applying to RNC for a job during campaign season, but it says that I need two references and one must be a political reference…I don’t really have one…any ideas?
Would your town mayor or someone on the town council qualify as a political reference?
Is your local congressman Republican? Maybe someone from his staff in the district office. Also, try state reps. and/or state senators and anyone from their respective staffs. Do you know anyone locally in the Republican party?
No, I don’t know anyone (or rather they don’t know me)..most of the locals are Repubs…thanks for the ideas.
Leave a message on my blog (link on my name) and I’ll get in touch with you directly. Perhaps I can help
.
Costume idea:
Since you have four people involved, how about the heads on Mt. Rushmore? Each president’s head would include part of the mountain so you all have the ability to join up and become “the monument”.
How’s ’bout The Founding Fathers? There are enough to choose from {56 signers of the Declaration} ……………….. if you’re looking more contemporaneously, how about ANYBODY who served in the U.S. military from ~ 1915-the present – of course, I’m biased ………………..
Semper Fi’
DM
OR, read Larry Correia’s Monster Hunter International – THAT’LL give you some good ideas!!
Semper Fi’
DM
Paul Revere or better yet… Betsy Ross
what about Daniel Boone?
David Bowie!
The original Battle of the Alamo one that is.
That would suggest some other Texans as well for the other Hill Buzz Men…. Sam Houston, Davey Crockett, George Bush, SR. & JR, and if someone just insists on dressing up in drag – Laura Bush……
Umm, Buttered? The “Texas one” you’re thinking of was Col. James “Jim” Bowie ………………….
Semper Fi’
DM
but hey, they might prefer dressing as David Bowie ROFL
I think that’s a great idea! You could also wear banners with parts of the Constitution/Bill of Rights written on them.
Or BRING the Constitution (for Jefferson or Franklin), the Declaration, the flag (for Betsy Ross), and maybe the spy-glass of George Washington as he looks across the Delaware.
That would be fun… specially if you could get some white wigs and tights.
Rosie the Riveter?
Betsy Ross?
A Former FLOTUS?
Supreme Court Justice?
Friend of mine found this old SNL skit ‘starring’ Al Gore.
It’s one of the “What Up With That” pieces, and is frikkin’ hilarious given what’s been happening.
http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/clips/what-up-with-that/1178425/
Ok, this sounds dumb at first, but it actually could work for both the cerebral and the not-so-cerebral crowds simultaneously if you develop it a little further. Three of you can be RED, WHITE and BLUE. Of course start with wearing your color head to toe, cape and tights optional. The “Who’s Medusa?” folks can’t miss RED, WHITE, BLUE, can they??
From there you could branch out with whatever patriotic accessories and themes you want. Sources do vary about what each color is supposed to represent, but color meaning could be a point of inspiration. ( Life, Liberty, Pursuit of Happiness… torch, eagle, stars… whatever…) Guy #4 could do the Statue of Liberty thing, or be a Star among you, the three stripe colors.
I don’t know. I think that’s as good as my brainstorming gets this late at night at the end of a long week. Have fun with the project, anyway!
The nuns taught us {back in the 60′s/early 70′s} that white is for purity of purpose, blue is for fidelity/loyalty, red is for the blood shed to achieve and maintain our freedoms …………………. also, the “blood stripe” on Marine non-commissioned officers’ {Corporal on up} uniforms represents the sacrifices made by that particular segment of the Marine Corps ………………..
Semper Fi’
DM
Barbers were frequently medics on early battlefields, e.g., the Civil War, which is the reason barber poles are also red, white and blue: Red for blood, white for bone, blue for veins.
1)
I love your male statue of liberty idea — if you hold a torch (like the statue of liberty) maybe write the words “The Son of Liberty” around the base of the flame
2)
The Lewis and Clark Expedition – great frontier costumes for the group
3)
Continental Army Generals like Washington, Greene, Gates, Knox, and/or foreigners who helped the cause Von Steuben, Pulaski, LaFayette, (or others) – would look dashing in period uniforms
4)
Divide the American Flag so when you stand together — the flag appears
Ha ha … stuff your shorts with rolls of socks to emphasize the “male” part!
We talking Superheroes and Supervillians or just Heroes?
Cause of course we have the EGO-maniac, with a giant inflated picture of Utopia superimposed on the front and a giant “O” belt buckle.
Don’t forget the Blunder Twins, Pelosi and Reid. “Shape of a Serpent!” “Form of a washout!”
For Heroes:
The Ryanaut: Delivering cost curves at the speed of sound.
Don’t forget The Minuteman, with a classic “Don’t Tread on me Cape,” a trusty sideshooter, and a copy of the First Amendment in his belt.
And “The Tenor”, who reserves powers not delegated to him to the states.
OK… these are kind of lame but whatevs >_>
I love them!! So clever!!
You boys have such great material to mine from that you can create a costume that is both patriotic and original.
For example, fashion a large scale 4 pointed star out of cardboard, cover it in tinfoil, make each star one of Palin’s 4 principles and at the center, a photo of Palin. Voilà, you are one of her Ninja throwing stars but then again, you already are.
Rememner the large roles of paper that was in every elementary and middle school? How about getting ahold of some of that, and you all could go as the Constitution? You could somehomw get poster board, and turn the bulletin paper into parchment paper. Or the Bill of Rights.
Someone could go as Paul Revere, and the redcoats could be “marxists” this time.
Black robes could turn you into the Supreme Courts justices.
Panda could be the “wise latina”. (I say that because of the Baby Googoo ordeal).
I’m liking the male Statue of Liberty, but you must post pics, or it didn’t happen:)
I *heart* Sebastian.
you guys love the military so why not some famous soldiers from our past, like Patton, U.S. Grant, Washington, Eienhouer or a uniform from any of past wars.
I’m liking this idea alot. Maybe one from each service?
something different: a cartoon
http://drsanity.blogspot.com/2010/02/forthcoming-apologies.html
Hillarious!!! Sending it on to my email list.
Don’t have any costume ideas (I’ll work on that) but I suggest explanations (for the “cerebrally” challenged) be written on your hands
Well, not necessarily patriotic, but when I think of superheros, I always think of Captain Hyperbole: http://i5.tinypic.com/20j5ve9.jpg
Or, how about going as ‘Team America’ from the movie?
I found another really good one. This time it is about Harry Reid:
http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/201199.php
talking about superheroes, what about Flash Gordon…. or maybe you have heard of Flesh Gordon?
You could go as super heroes who protect and defend the land of the free and the home of the brave: Dawn’s Early Light, Rocket’s Red Glare, Twilight’s Last Gleaming, and Morning’s First Beam (um, I guess you could be rather irreverent with that last one).
Broad Stripes and Bright Stars? It would be a hint, as well.
Prolly a separate thread, boyz…Don’t want your thread hijacked.

The global warming nuts will take credit for this one as well. But it’s sounding like their buildings were built to a better code. I hope the lives lost are minimal. God be with those people.
I love the 1770s costumes and drum and a big box of tea.
Otherwise, what is on my mind is Tillikum. More news came out about the attack yesterday.
http://mainfo.blogspot.com/2010/02/killer-whale-violently-kills-trainer.html
Did you know that Tililkum is a teabagger? It is true, he was pictured at a tea party protest.
Then there is the photo taken with members of the Birch Society ROFL
Tikkum is a KNOWN “right flipper” who, no doubt had talk radio piped into his tank. As a FL resident, Tik is an obvious Rubio supporter.
(A little attempt at humor on such an awful news cycle day).
I vote for Rosie the Riveter! That is brilliant … totally patriotic and unique … biceps will only add to the look!
Red White and Blue is also clever.
I wanted to post this
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7Ue8xv6cHE&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1]
see, its the Obot democrats who have taken over the party and they are some of the most cruel disgusting people I have ever seen. You see, as HillBuzz says, these cruel people are now the face of the undemocratic party, these are the people who have no problems making disgusting attacks on women, they have no problems attacking a little defenseless baby.
I was a lifelong and loyal democrat until 2008, but I was a moderate hillary democrat, which is why it was easy to see the radical extreme left of the Marxist fraud and his gang. I will never ever be voting for another democrat for a LONGGGGG time, the democrat brand is gone, stick a fork in it.
I used to think it was the conservatives who were racists, and sexists and took fun in making fun of others, I stand corrected, I have no doubt there are some extreme righties,
but as a new Independent voter wihtout the democrat blinders, I have seen more compassion and logic from the conservatives than from the raging radical lunatic left, and these are the disgusting fools who have taken over the undemocratic party, kicked out moderate dems like me and completely destroyed the Democrat brand.
Great vid. I linked you on my blog.
Hi Opus #6!
sure, can I make a request?
I do appreciate the h/t to me, but would you mind removing the h/t to me?
(I don’t trust Obots, and yes I am that paranoid, so would really appreciate you removing the h/t to me)
thanks much!!
Sure, no prob.
Glad your eyes are open! It’s been a “projection” thing with the Democrat version of truth! They perpetually accuse the Repubs of all kinds of heinous behavior, when in fact, they are the guilty party of such behavior! The Repubs have had their unsavory ones, but with the help of the LSM, the sitting members (other than RINOs) obviously have the minimum level of character and integrity or they would have been exposed! The Repubs need to clean out the old guard at the top of the party and make room for the new conservatism.
ssmith, thanks for posting, and sharing your story.
You’re absolutely correct…the Democrat brand has been damaged for a long time to come.
They live, breathe and teach hate and negativity. It must really suck to be so rotten and bitter.
Sarah is their polar opposite, which is why she drives them literally crazy (Olbermann comes to mind.)
However, thinking people like yourself are seeing through their insanity and eventually they will be run out of town on a rail.
ssmith,
You beat me to it!!! I was just about to post this.
Also, anyone who is a Palin supporter or a fence sitter, please go into the comment section of this post and read TECHNO’s analysis of WHY Dems can’t even bring themselves to sympathize with a mom and her special needs child. It hits on all the right points, and its an amazing summary of the effectiveness that is Sarah Palin. In short, the Left blames Sarah for Obama’s failure, even though they would NEVER admit it.
I was going to post Techno’s entire summary, but its too long. However, its an easy read, there are 11 bullet points.
http://www.conservatives4palin.com/2010/02/luntz-focus-group-analyzes-palin-and.html#comments
Opus #6, can you post Techno’s analysis as well?
I read Techno’s comments there with the same sense of approval, and linked to it in a comment in the post above. Sorry for the duplication!
Yes. I will. This evening or tomorrow morning. Thanks so much.
Good points by techno. One funny thing that struck me. The post said, “Remember when Charlie Chaplin mocked Hitler (in The Great Dictator) how the Nazi’s got angry”. ….Yah sure, I remember it like it was yesterday. LOL just struck me as funny.
I had not seen the first part of the cartoon clip, just the restaurant scene. I think that was the most offensive part, Stewie making fun of her looks. Forget the Gov. of Alaska comment (if anything, the Downs Syndrome character was, from what I saw, portrayed as articulate and intelligent). But mocking the other character for thinking she’s special (in a good way) is just plain mean and discriminatory.
And lets get real – if the tables were turned and Edwards lovechild (or Sasha or Malia) had DS and this cartoon was done by conservatives – the liberals and the media would still be screaming about it and most likely the writers and producers fired.
I found this on youtube yesterday and just love the message!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=662R2awSwPQ&NR=1
America Rising will be a 2010 classic.
Can you believe it? Zero scolded Eric Cantor for bringing the actual healthcare bill to the
“summit.”
Zero called the bill a “prop.” What a tool!
This coming from the guy who had styrofoam Greek columns as a backdrop!
LOL
forget the greek columns, Obama himself is a prop!
Hey, are you really happy to see me! Or is that just a Greek column in your……
I think the “prop” accusation is very telling and I can’t believe some conservative commentator hasn’t picked up more on it.
The 2400 page bill is a prop. It’s a prop used by Dr. U and the Democrats to disguise the fact that it’s not about health care, it’s about the largest takeover of the economy by government that this country has ever seen.
What if a question had been asked about it? I thought his bringing it was a very good idea! That way the dems couldn’t lie about what or wasn’t in it. Just boggles the mind why it was ‘wrong’ to have it there!
Well this is just scary, too. Love the way it’s released on a Saturday when nobody’s paying attention.
http://thehill.com/blogs/hillicon-valley/technology/83961-forthcoming-cybersecurity-bill-to-give-president-new-powers-in-cyberattack-emergencies
With all due respect. When a majority of democrats think it’s a “choice” to kill the un-born, how does that make the democratic party “the party of compassion? It makes no sence! The day JFK (pro life) was killed, was the end of the democratic party. Listen to the sound of JFK’s voice in this speach. Notice the fear for our nation.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWm05l5XxkA&feature=related
80 million baby-boomers retireing, and nearing the end of all their major purchases. 40 million of the following generation can not support them through an economy based on 70% of consumerism. I’ll bet those 50 million abortions will come back to bite us. It has nothing to do with “intolerance” PC-PC-PC-PC-PC kills! Where’s those “death panels”?
Sarah Palin vs Barack Obama = Good vs Evil. The battle line has been drawn, sides are being taken.
That’s an aspect of abortion that I don’t believe I have ever seen addressed in national economic terms. As a pro-lifer, I’ve been aware of it all my adult life. It’s like the left doesn’t even bother to deny it: they just act like it’s not there. How can you remove/destroy such a percentage of the national, taxpaying labor force (and potential consumers) and not have it affect your economic model/reality?
The left still manages to make me mad that they are such liars in their basic premises. I completely understand that’s simply who they are….but it still makes me mad. Fools. And they are destroying the best country on earth.
It has also managed to make African-Americans a smaller minority than Hispanics. They are about to lose their “power” to a group that is 50% conservative!
I have heard that in Australia they are encouraging couples to have 3 or more children now, to fund the retirements of their parents later on down the line….
I truly believe that he was assassinated to stop the take over of our country by the socialist/liberal elite. and I believe that he spun in his grave at what his brother Ted did to this country.
JFK was a true patriot who loved this country and served it well. I wonder what this country would look like had he not been killed.
I visited Dealy Plaza last year, very emotional experience.
I often think that Bobby Kennedy was killed for a similar reason to that of John.
From what I saw of Bobby Kennedy he was nothing like his brother Ted. However, that is just an impression left by the LSM at the time.
Costume Ideas?
Do you remember school house rock? There were several that were about our government. Maybe there are some good ideas in there. “I’m just a bill, yeah I’m only a bill…” And suffering for sufferage. That one even had a cape!
Here you go!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEJL2Uuv-oQ
Oh my, you brought back some fond memories of childhood! I remember that song like it was yesterday. Today, it’s “I’m just a bill…. and I live inside of Crapitol Hill”.
I absolutely cannot just SAY the preamble to the Constitution. I have to sing the School House Rock song. I’ll bet I’m not alone in that. : )
Me too!
I suppose Captain America has been done too much?

Who Should Play “Captain America?” Meet the Wannabes!

Look and see to perk up your day and make it exciting!
So, I met Mike Vogel, One of the “Captain America” Contenders! And He Said…
http://www.mannythemovieguy.com/index.php?entry=entry100226-144034
“Captain America” is what I think the four-man US bobsled team looks like in their not-very-figure-flattering lycra. Just saying…
OT from the costume theme, but iObama hit a record new low today at Rasmussen, and his approval index just tied the biggest spread ever. (-21)
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/daily_presidential_tracking_poll
Delicious! I think he needs to keep pushing his health care plan while we clean his clock using his own socialist mop.
Still not low enough for me.
; )
It will be a landslide in November!
I just hope Republicans can stop this healthcare nonsense.
Just a note. Those who “Strongly Approve” has gone down to 22%. I remember shortly after the election when people said that number would never crack 37% because so many believed so strongly.
Wonder what happened to that.
My other semi-serious question is this: At what point do the tar & feathers come out (figuratively)? What happens when the vast majority of people are in the strong negative?
Shhhhh. I hope no one tells him that every time he goes away from the public for 2 or more days his numbers go up slightly. The 7 hour marathon of condescending body language and smash mouth put downs and disrespectful interruptions of his invited guests…brought these numbers down quickly. They will go down more tomorrow and then tick up again because he is on now talking about helping Chile with whatever they need.
When he talks about our issues, the numbers tank, especially when he refuses to stop talking about and pushing his health care “reform”.
OT but it is open thread. I wonder with the tsunami that is predicted to hit Hawaii (after effect of quake just hit this am in Chili)will destroy all the vital records???
LOL. There are no vital records. There are no school records. There are no school friends. There is nothing, but Zero the Hero: Giver of unicorns that sh*t skittles.
LOL!!!!!!
I cant stop laughing..
“sh*t skittles”
I am so using that!
Also OT, but – a 6.9 quake hit Okinawa today, too – a friend {retired after 22 yrs USMC} is there in a civilian capacity with his family ………………
Semper Fi’
DM
DM, I hope your buddy and his family are all ok.
I’m a MoM (mother of Marine – and Mother in Law, to boot), so I worry and pray for all current and former USMC.
As far as ‘Superheroes’ go, I have a slightly different ‘take’.
In today’s crazy world, MY personal heroes are people like Matt Drudge, James O’Keefe, Hannah Giles, Lucianne Goldberg, Andy Breitbart and Glenn Beck.
The costumes would be dead simple.
Drudge: fedora with a press card in the hatband, maybe carrying a blue dress (snark!)
O’Keefe: outrageous ‘pimp’ outfit, complete with cape and shades
Giles: trashy street hooker gear, maybe handcuffed to O’Keefe
I don’t know how ‘sophisticated’ your crowd is, so the others might be over their heads.
It’s just meant as a ‘thought starter’.
Today I am officially unemployed. Hope and change is not working for me.
((((Jane))))
You’ll be okay. What is your occupation? Why were you laid off? What part of the country are you from?
Jane, I am so sorry.
Jane, very sorry to hear that, one of my friends has been unemployed for about 6 months,
its been very hard on her and on every other unemployment person I have no doubt.
What field are you looking at?
Hi, Jane….try not to let your current circumstance change your perception of who you are, either personally or professionally. Your unemployment is a commentary on obama and his economic thugs. It is not a commentary on you. Fight back. How and when you can.
Jane, I am so sorry to hear this. My own story is that I worked part time for nine months (after 38 years with the same company), but at least I was not laid off. Just went back to full time employment, before I ran out of money. I credit God for this. I will pray for you too.
So sorry. There are many of us.
So sorry to hear this, Jane. Will send up good thoughts for you to find something new soon.
Jane,
what can I say to help you feel better?
Hugs. I hope you get another job soon.
It is hard. My husband lost his job last year. He is working so not a problem.
My occupation is public service. I’ve been laid off from municipal government. I received my MPA last year and I’ve been looking for work at the state and federal levels, and wished to find it before this happened. This is Michigan – so it’s really bad here. Tomorrow I start volunteering for Rick Snyder – One tough nerd running for governor.
I did book a vacation to Las Vegas (because The Won told us not to) before this happened, so I’ll be crossing my fingers when I land out west on March 5. But I’ll probably downgrade from the nickel slots to the penny slots
I’ll land on my feet. Thanks for all the kind words!
It’s gotta be something related to the Constitution if you want it to apply to everything.
I’m on my way out the door for work today (hopefully will check back in tonight and see responses), but what’s on MY mind today are:
1) Obama indicated he was going to reveal his plan next week for getting the hcb through. I wonder what we’re going to find out next week. I a little afraid… the “chicago way” doesn’t think the way “normal” people think.
2) what “hold” does Rangel have over Pelosi and the other dems that they are so very reluctant to punish him in any way? How can he continue to get away with as much as he’s getting away with an not at least have a “for show” verbal condemnation??
On Rangel, I heard that since Pelosi needs votes now for the HCB she does not want to rock the boat in the House.
Plus she would be admitting the lack of ethics among her “Most Ethical Congress EVAH!”
The Democrats know how to circle the wagon, and defend the indefensible. That is their way, there are too many examples to list. The Republicans are always way to quick to send their own packing. I don’t understand this, but don’t think for one second that the Dems aren’t fully aware of the Repubs record of doing this. The Repubs have always allowed the Dems to set the standards for what Repubs should do concerning indiscretions in their party. The Dems, well they just do whatever they please.
There’s a terrific piece over on HA this morning (I think!…so sorry if that’s not where it is…I’ll try to confirm and check back if I’m wrong….) but it’s about exactly this point: what obama will do and how it clarifies the dhims present state of mind. The bottom line is not good news on the surface: probably just more intention to push it through on a majority vote…but in the long run, that will solidify and increase opposition throughout the country. IOW, just revealing more of who they are, with this addition of understanding: they (meaning the core leadership of the left) really ARE more interested in turning the country irretrievably left than they are in winning the 2010 election…and the writer used the analogy that “the right” would probably be willing to lose an election if they could get a constitional amendment forbidding abortion). The long range view, if this is what they do, is perhaps not necessarily bad, as “America rising up” will then be unstoppable. I saw this somehwere else, as well, this morning–America saying to the democrats: “Don’t make me go all Mama Bear on you.” I like that.
Reconciliation takes meticulous strategy on the part of the dems. It’s not just about 51 votes. They have bungled this so badly, when they need every star to be in perfect alignment, I just don’t think they’re (actually,Reid) capable of pulling this off.
I’ll enjoy watching the fireworks however.
How do I upload an avatar?
Go to Gravatar ( google it ) and follow the instructions there, and your avatar will appear with your screen name on a lot of blogs, like this one. Seeing mine- with that 195lb. Van Norman boring bar I used to hump across the South- was a pleasant surprise.
i understand the request was for patriotic superhero costumes, but I am really drawing a blank on that. Sorry. However if you ever just want some superhero ideas I vote (early and often!) for costumes from THE TICK. Yah, the tick, die fledermous and the most bestest superhero of all AMERICAN MAID with her three inch stiletto heels of justice!
Ok. I’ve got one for Halloween, but not for the superhero party.
You could build a cardboard bus and then dress up as all people that have been thrown under Obama’s bus. By October, that could be a lot of characters to choose from.
How about the almighty Dollar Bills? — George, Tom, Abe, Andrew, Ulysses and/or Ben.
We like to dress up as firecrackers, LOL. You can get lots of sparkly flames coming off the top of your head and red, white and blue on the bottom. A fuse is kind of fun.
I have no idea how firecrackers became so patriotic, but around here on the 4th we celebrate the American spirit of independence and rebellion by blowing them off like crazy and trying to avoid the cops. It’s very wet where I live, so it’s relatively safe. What’s kind of funny is that fireworks were not a big deal around here…until they were banned. Now people are engaged in a serious fire cracker war that lasts about a week in July and comes back in time for the New Year.
What can I say, I love that spirit that says, I’m an American, don’t tell me what I can and cannot do, especially when I’m celebrating the day America rebelled and declared it’s independence.
yttik, the firecrackers are to remind “us” of the origins of The Star Spangled Banner – “…… the rockets’ red glare/the bombs bursting in air ……………….”

hmm, lets see costume ideas?
how about hillary as president
and sarah as president.
2 people 2 costumes, 1 as hillary as president
1 as sarah as president.
little girl as Vice President Sarah Palin, still brings a smile !!
soooo cute!
oops, no linky
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HGp8vqX0rw
How cute is that?
Wasn’t that adorable! I loved that costume.
YOU BETYA!! Adorable! Thx.
Awwwww!
That brought tears to my eyes. How incredibly cute and perfect.
And I know why it brought to tears to my eyes–a dynamic that’s at work across the country. I’m not a crier or a weeper. But we all so angry, love our country, getting very tired and wondering what they will do next that will scare us—and this means there are perhaps a hundred million (or MORE, I’d like to believe) people just like us who have pent up legitimate anger and emotion like they have never faced in their safe, icky little worlds. And they should worry, as someone else said on another site this morning…and they should be aware that we very well MAY just go all Mama Bear on them. That little girl is SO cute.

Though I am sorry for anyone suffering through disease and do not wish any more ill will on Mr. Ebert..he also suffers from Palin Derangement Syndrome…
I agree Mark, while I empathise with his health issues It makes it even more onerous that Ebert continues to bash and ridicule Sarah Palin and the “teabaggers”, Usually a profound life event like such an illness will make you a more tolerant, compassionate and kind person. Not in his case. Because the way I see it, when you bash a “teabagger” you bash us hard working middle America taxpayers, and that ticks me off.
Yeah, I seriously loved reading the guy until he went all PDS. Now I feel bad for him because of his health problems, but I can’t say I really like him anymore.
Oh, interesting fact: He and Oprah used to be an item a long time ago. True story.
I read that Oprah credits Ebert with suggesting that she own her show and syndicate it. That’s what has brought the big $$$.
Yes, I was just going to post about this. I can’t help but feel sorry for someone going thru what he’s going thru – after all, I’m human, but I read on Andrew Breitbart’s Big Hollywood website that he’s sent out twitter tirades against Sarah Palin and called the Tea Party people “teabaggers”. They’ve had a big whoop dee doo going with him about it. He’s mean as a snake – even in his condition! You’d think the man would be thinking about meeting his maker and trying to make amends and living a clean, loving, peaceful life during this horrible time, but noooooooo – he’s railing against people speaking their minds and not agreeing with HIM! Go figure!
Costume ideas: not very good with heroes or superheroes I’m afraid, but there’s one idea that crossed my mind that would be rather different and I think very eye-catching:
The last Challenger space shuttle (with apologies to Fenimore Cooper) — especially poignant as our dearly despised President seems keen to cancel the Constellation program. (No doubt the savings if any will be used for White House parties or will vanish into fictitious congressional districts, never to be seen again.) Somewhere on the trunk of the vehicle there could be an epitaph along these lines: “If nothing else I thought my shape would appeal to the President’s imagination, and thus save me; but in vain. In the Year II of the era of hope and change, I was terminated.”
***
One little thing to report: today in the remainder section of the largest bookstore in town I saw copies of Fugitive Years by Bill Ayers. Feh.
Sorry, don’t know how the name Challenger slipped in there, I just meant the space shuttle generically!
And now the space shuttle story is back in the news:
http://www.redstate.com/moe_lane/2010/02/27/obama-administration-kills-23k-space-related-jobs-in-florida/
Good point — does anyone realize how much of the space program was defense? Another shut down of American defense……….look it up if you don’t believe me!
If you’re talking about four of you attending events together, how about a riff on the Four Hosemen of the Apocalypse? Obama, Harry, Nancy and Joe Biden.
Or maybe three of you could go as Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness and the fourth could go as Tom Jefferson.
The fourth could be their boss – George Soros!!! Greek togos are always hot.
What’s on my mind today is my daughter 29yrs old and mother of two beautiful daughters 2 1/2 and 9 months. We found out this past Tuesday that she has cancer. If anyone feels moved to pray for her we would be most grateful.
Rushmoregirl,
I will certainly keep your daughter, her family, and you in my thoughts and prayers.
((((Rushmoregirl)))) Our prayers are reaching out to your daughter and your family. God bless you all.
Would you share her name?
Oh, I’m so sorry! Will get my Facebook prayer chain (from one side of the country to the other) going for you.
Rushmoregirl, As the grandmother of 2 precious granddaughters, my heart goes out to you, your daughter and those 2 little ones. What is your daughter’s first name so I can put her on my prayer list.Claim healing for her and be strong in your faith.
Absolutely praying for her and the rest of your family as well. Please keep us updated about her condition and how her treatment is going.
If you need anything, just let us know – you know that we will ALL do whatever we can to help out!
Oh, as a mother of a daughter with two boys, I am so sorry. I am praying that her doctors are wise, that the treatment is effective, and that she keeps her strength and a positive vision. My heart aches for you.
We will most definitely pray; and give you, your daughter and family to a couple of prayer chains and churches.
I added them to 2 prayer lists.
I will gladly pray for your daughter.
I’ll definitely pray for her.
Rushmoregirl please keep us informed about her progress. Please give a name so that we can pray for her…
My breath is just taken away. Thank you all so much for your concern and offers of prayer.
My daughter’s name is Jessica and her little girl’s names are Veda and Kaya. Jess is still nursing Kaya and that has become an issue for her. Don’t know much yet as this is so new-but, will keep all you wonderful compassionate Buzzers updated. Her husband is Andy and Jess and he joked to her brother that they had found out that Lucy (their Lab) wasn’t a cancer detecting dog. I am amazed at their upbeat attitude!!
Thank you all again. The thought of so many praying for us is so heart warming.
I just got back from church, and I said many prayers for her.
I will also add your daughter and her family to my prayer chain. And you as well.
Rushmoregirl, your family is in my prayers.
Prayers sent up, and a (((cyberhug sent))) sent out to you and your family Rushmoregirl. G-d Bless.
I will pray for your daughter and your families.
I agree with you hillboyz, sometimes mean and nasty behavior can be explained by disease or other conditions we don’t know about. You mentioned “Alzheimer’s” and yes it can cause devastating personality changes in those who have it. I entertain in “memory care units” and I have seen first hand sweet, lively, and out-going people transform in a matter of minutes into mean, surly, even violent people. My heart especially goes out to family members who have known their loved ones in better times who have to witness this transformation and decline into someone they don’t recognize.
I totally agree. My mother-in-law was always a happy and kind person, and NEVER said anything unkind about another person.
Well, one Christmas, in front of the whole family, she said something terrible to her sister. We knew right away that something was wrong.
We took her to a Dr. right after that episode, and she was diagnosed shortly after that.
Thank goodness, we got beyond that “nasty” behavior quickly. She has had it for over 6 years now, but she is very happy.
I guess I’m writing this because I want people to be aware that when you see someone’s personality change like that, please don’t ignore it.
During the first years of my Mother’s dementia, there was a lot of generalized anger and explosions. Then it seemed like that passed and her last years were easier for her. It’s heartbreaking watching those who brought us along in our young years become frustrated and helpless.
Barack Obama claims “I found Christ” he says it in both of his books. What kind of Christain is he?

Anybody can “find Christ” when it is convenient…
One of my favorite T-Shirt designs is the one that says, “I found Jesus – he was hiding behind the sofa!”
I know, I know, I’m going to burn in Hell…..
He found Christ in the same way as Judas Iscariot found Christ.

Hillbuzz… I must say that I’ve always loved Ebert. He’s an alum of my school and when he came down here for his film festival, he’s always been great to the students taking time to sign books, etc. I actually saw him in the Illini Union once buying a soda or something at the store, which was really neat. I have the special edition of Casablanca where he provides commentary, and it’s always fun to listen to his insight about movies. Although I disagree with him big time in politics and wish someone would take away his twitter account for gosh sakes, I do love his insight into movies and since he’s always been a gentleman to Illini nation, I cannot hate him.
As for the gay issue, I am very glad that you had an okay encounters with evangelical, social conservatives on this issue. Most Republicans under 40 are more tolerant about gay rights, but some of the older Republicans can be less so. I’ve never heard of anyone state they wish gay people would die of AIDS, but I do know of some situations where my gay friends were disowned by their parents/ have very rocky relationships with their parents who happen to be Republican party bigwigs. One of my best friends in high school was gay and was disowned by his father because of it (Lake County Republican bigwig). Luckily the son had a mother supporting him, but it was still not the best situation. Everyone had to go on this ridiculous retreat because I went to a Catholic High School and his dad wasn’t even there for him with that.
George W Bush says he wants to remain anonymous and not be a thorn in Obama’s side. He also says he’s glad Cheney is defending his defense policies.
Some people say this shows class on GWB’s part, maybe they’re correct but I think Bush is wrong to not defend his policies. Obama is unprecedented in his criticism of Bush and Cheney, to the point of trying to prosecute people who carried out Bush’s orders. By not defending yourself and the people who believed in you, you’re leaving others “hanging out to dry” as the expression goes. These aren’t leaderly actions. I like Bush, but we need more aggressive “in your face” republicans, the day of being congenial is OVER!!!
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=CNG.ce7b18ff74d1dcc6be3181f05e48255b.5b1&show_article=1
I agree AND I am so disappointed his tell-all book is not coming out until NOV 2010 – after elections. Enough diplomacy George, we are fighting for freedom!!!
I really have a problem with praying for Ebert. This entire political season has really angered and soured me. I see democrats that are so mean and vile, they anger me to the point of insanity. A lot of times when I’m alone on my computer or watching TV and I read or see liberal insanity, I just get angry to the point of screaming, it gets me so mad.
These people seem so evil. They don’t care that Acorn advises people to start underaged brothels. Their hatred of Sarah Palin is just dangerous. I wonder what ther’re capable of.
When Ebert slams Palin and the tea party people I. JUST. HATE. HIM. It makes me see the bias in his older movie reviews I never saw before.
I’m doing my best to work on this anger, but I’m not ready to pray for Ebert yet. When I go to church tommorow, I’ll try, but I’m not promising anything.
Paul – at least you’re willing to try. That’s more than the Dimicrats will do (hah!) and I’m a former one!
Then you pray that God will show them the way. And you pray for them, because they have lost their way and they have forgotten (or maybe never knew) that God loves them no matter what.
And then what I do in situations like this is I pray that God will show me how to be the type of person who can divorce a person’s actions from the person themself, which will allow me to continue to pray for folks like this.
Thanks for the advise Teresa.
And steel, I’ll give it the old State University try. (as opposed to the ivy league college try). Elitist humor, don cha know. LOL
I hope you’re able to let go of the anger – a few months ago I managed to let go of a lot of anger and my life has been better since. It’s like that toast Sarah and Todd like: “May we always be happy and may our enemies know it.”
HBs,
could this article answer the questions
about the ‘activities’ on Hill’s sites
that you have been asking?
BILL & HILLARY : DRIVING THE LEFT INTO A DITCH?
http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/bill-and-hillary-driving-the-left-into-a-ditch/
Wow. That is some corkscrew thinking by the author – but very interesting.
I don’t agree that it doesn’t matter for them if they pass the bill or not. It matters to us. This group at the WH and in Congress are politically dead to us either way, but if they do pass it, the country will blame the entire party for a generation because they kept pushing us to the brink of our endurance despite our passion for them to drop it. They will be painted with this behemoth for 40 years. And we will be trying to constitutionally overturn it for years. The public will despise the Democrats. That doesn’t help Hillary unless she leaves the party, which I can never see her doing. The Independents will not vote for another D for awhile. Even Hillary. If that is the plan, it can’t work. The anger and distrust has reached critical mass.
I agree with you that this strategy will not work if the outcome is to get Hillary to the WH. However the strategy does work if the outcome is to hasten the demise of the Obama administration and those democrats in congress who have marched “lock-step” with Obama, Reid, and Pelosi. I think at this point Bill Clinton knows that the democratic party is “toast” with the rest of the country and there’s nothing he can do or say to change that so why not “play along”? Let’s face it, if he were to criticize the President, he would be called a “racist” just like he and Hillary were during the dem. primaries.
Of course as you have said this does not help Hillary, but right now and probably for the near future having a “D” by your name is going to be a liability anyway. I would love to see Hillary run for President in 2012 but it looks like any “dem” winning the WH in 2012 is going to be nothing short of a miracle.

Boyz, you are the most compassionate people out there. This post brought tears to my eyes. I have to say, I truly wish more people could be like you all. Everyday I see all of the nastiness in the world and then I come to Hillbuzz, read your posts and the comments from the wonderful people here and realize that there are good people out there who are working to make things better and won’t let the nastiness stop them. (Holy run-on sentence, Batman!)
You truly are the best. God bless ya!
Apologies if someone has already linked this, but, this is lovely.
Boyz, have you seen this? It’s an open letter to Pres Bush letting him know how much we appreciate him, if even after the fact.
I know it’s your mission to thank him yourselves this year. And I believe that you will. But in the interim, the people behind this letter are hoping to get 1 million signatures and deliver it to Mr. Bush.
http://missmeyet.com/
And they are also hoping to deliver a letter to Utopia – stating he needs to stop blaming Bush!
The two letters are downloadable as PDFs in the top right.

Roger Ebert is a mean horse’s a$$. I’ve been following his tweets about Palin, tea partiers etc., on Big Hollywood. He’s so darn MEAN! And condescending. I’m very sorry he’s sick; it’s very sad. But that still doesn’t give him an excuse to be so downright MEAN.
I was watching the Olympics which everyone who has watched them must realize that they are being broadcast on the NBC channel. They just finished with a story done by Tom Brokaw about how Canada helped the US immediately after 9/11. I was not familiar with most of this information until now. I must write that it was a very good story even though it was done by NBC. Thank you Canada! I love you guys!
I saw it too, nomo, and was pleasantly re-reminded of the Gander folks kindness to 7000 “plane people.” I’m gonna research more about that scholarship and donate to them myself!
There’s a marvelous book about those days when thousands of plane passengers ended up in Gander–I believe the title is “When the World Came To Gander” (or …to Newfoundland).
It’s just a great narrative about a bunch of normal common sense people who leaped to the task when the word spread through their community that thousands of people were coming to stay for a few days.
Worth hunting down to read…you’ll love the Canadians even more!
We were in Vancouver about a month after 9/11. The hotel employees there told us that many planes coming to the U.S. from Asia were diverted to Vancouver. The hotels quickly filled to overflowing but they took care of everybody somehow. The pictures of the planes going into the buildings kept showing over and over on TV. A lot of the Asians who were diverted weren’t fluent enough in English to understand what was going on. Some of them thought many buildings were crashed into. The hotels rounded up translaters to help people understand what was going on.
I also read in a Vancouver newspaper that when Bush had all air traffic stopped, some planes in Canada were checked and found to have box cutters hidden in them. I never saw this anywhere else. I think that the box cutters were ditched as people deplaned for the emergency.
“She made Bast’s life a living Hell for three years, but now that we know she has Alzheimer’s, her behavior makes a lot more sense, and we’ve let go a lot of the negative feelings we had towards the woman because we can see how she wasn’t really “all there” when we knew her.”
I wanted to comment on Louella. In fact, I’m tearing up as I type. My mom suffered from Alzheimer’s and her behavior became ever so much more negative and hateful at times. She was never like this before, she took in children from the charities who were abused and unloved because in her own life she was abused and forced to live in a foster home as an infant. She was a person who would do anything for anyone. However she became paranoid and accusatory towards others. It was the disease, my mom was lost.
I’m so glad that you are trying to forgive Louella. She has a devastating illness and most likely she was developing it when she was so cruel to Sebastian. It’s hell to live with and witness but the person doesn’t know what they are doing, they can’t control it or even understand why anyone is upset because of their actions.
I’ll put you and Louella in my prayers.
My father suffers from Parkinson’s disease, and I would not wish it on anyone in the world. His body is still here, but not the person I once knew is no more. All I have to hold onto are memories of what once was. Worst of all, is watching my mother take care of him while working full time for health insurance. I wish I had answers to why this happens to people, and the only thing I can do is just pray for everyone. B/c prayer is the only thing I have left.
quote: “So, tomorrow at mass, if you go, if you could find room in your prayers for both Louella and Ebert, we’d appreciate it.”
You guys have such beautiful souls….it’s why I keep reading….
You Boyz are so generous and kind spirited.
A prayer up for Sebastian and his family. My M-i-L has Alzheimers. She recognizes her two sons; but not the rest of us. She is afraid of her adult, male grandsons–they are big guys who scare her. We knew she had troubles years ago, but her longtime doctor over looked a lot. We moved her so we could care for her, but she had to go into a nursing home two years ago as she is a “wonderer” always looking to go home. She has to wear a ankle monitor (she is physically a 40 yo even though she is in her 70s) for her safety. When she was still “on her own” she was always cooking breakfast for her late husband (burners left on; repetative plates of food made and wrapped and stored; and more cooked and more stored). By G-d’s grace she didn’t burn the house down or catch her clothing on fire. Some people (those never touched by Alz) are quick to chime in on “how awful nursing homes are…” But those are people who have not seen Alz upclose. Without either 24 hour supervision (she doesn’t sleep more than an hour at a time) or electronic monitoring she would be one of those people that huge searches are engaged for.
As for what’s on my mind…well…prayers for Chile (but from what I have read, they are a well prepared citizenry and govt).
What was on my mind (earlier today) was that I got polled last night by Quinnapiac University!!! And I truthfully answered ALL the questions about PA govt, the Specter senate race (YES!!!!) and my opinions on Dear Leader and Healthcare reform, AS A REGISTERED DEM (which I still am registered as). It was cathartic to give Arlen, Barky, and ObamaCare the lowest possible ratings. I got to sadly answer “no” to all as my preferred answer of “hell no” wasn’t an option.
Yay! I’m still registered as a Democrat, too, and I would have answered the same way. I live in Florida, a transplant from New Jersey. I moved away from there 3 1/2 years ago. While living in New Jersey, I voted exclusively Democrat. In Florida, I voted for Democrats in my first voting opportunity which was the election for governor that Charlie Crist won. I also voted Democrat for the other races that were on the ballot. Then the 2008 election occurred, and due to the treatment that Hillary received from the DNC, and Demobrat party leaders, I voted a solid Republican ballot in the 2008 as payback. Since I am still thoroughly disgusted with everything Demobrat, I’ll be voting solid Republican again in November. I just may be voting this way for years to come.
no ideas for costumes. sorry… but i’m just not creative that way. however, luealla and ebert will be in my prayers. i’ll even ask my twin nephews to pray for them (amazing what the prayers of two 4 year olds will do!)
Our Founding Fathers:
Samuel Adams
1722-1803

Thomas Paine
1737-1809

Benjamin Franklin
1706-1790

Thomas Jefferson
1743-1826
http://www.monticello.org/jefferson/timeline.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Jefferson
I think Samuel Adams would be a great costume to wear. Although you may want to carry a bottle of Samuel Adams beer to hold up anytime someone asks you, “who are you suppose to be?”
Samuel Adams was a Harvard educated stateman born in Boston, Massachusetts. His signature can be found on one of the greatest documents in American history – the Declaration of Independence.
He was also influential in encouraging what would become known as the American Revolution. He believed in American republicanism and was a member of the Democratic-Republucan political party.
One of his friends was another fellow Founding Father, Thomas Paine, author of the book Common Sense. Maybe, someone could dress up as Thomas Paine holding his book Common Sense.
Another Founding Father, printer and inventor, Benjamin Franklin would make a great historical character to represent in costume with a kite and bifocals, or Thomas Jefferson our third President of the United States.
There are many exceptional men who have helped to shape this great country, men who believed in Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of the American Dream of Independence over tyranny.

MANY moons ago {as in, early 70′s} I attended a seminar on wolf conservation @ the Kennedy Center {I would’ve been ~ 16} – a couple of the celebrities I met there were Marlin Perkins {of Wild Kingdom} and Jimmy Stewart – Perkins was a pompous a$$, whereas Jimmy Stewart was the epitome of gentlemanly conduct {this was around the time he lost his son, KIA in VietNam}.
A year or so earlier, we stopped @ a local drugstore on Easter Sunday for ‘something’ – I’d elected to wait in the car – my Dad came out & informed me that my brother had just shaken hands with Telly Savalas {this was pre-Kojak} – as I entered the store, he was leaving – I followed him out and extended my hand – I nearly SWOONED when he didn’t shake it, but rather, KISSED it {remember, this was shortly after Woodstock} – he was the most polite, respectful gentleman a 15 year old girl could meet; he was visiting his brother, a teacher in northern Virginia …………………

I’ll try not to think that she has influence as to where our economy goes so that I can sleep tonight.
Hillbuzz, I was thinking about your Halloween costume request. There really aren’t many costumes concerning American history that most people would know immediately upon seeing the costume. Maybe each one of you can be a framed portrait of someone famous where your face, or eyes and mouths, can replace the famous person’s face, and the rest of the portrait can be the upper body of who you are depicting plus anything else, including the person’s name, that you deem necessary to complete the costume. The rest of your bodies can be completely covered in black fabric. These costumes may not be the best idea for reuse, though.

Roger Ebert says horrible vile things about Sarah Palin and conservatives. He has become a hate tweeter, fyi
