Saturday Open Thread: February 20th, 2010

Posted on February 20, 2010 by HillBuzz // Hillbuzz

What’s on your minds this Saturday?

*********

We finally saw the Michael Jackson “This Is It” documentary, since Redbox had it for $1.  You know what we think:  meh.

Panda is obsessed with Michael Jackson and is still wearing black to honor his memory, like Michael’s sister Janet is doing (while LaToya has decided to just keep being crazy), and insists he’ll keep it up as long as she will.  No word if he’ll also learn all the moves to Rhythm Nation or start doing scenes from Good Times, too.  You never know with Panda.

The rest of us groove to some of Jackson’s older stuff if it comes on in bars.  Don’t Stop ‘Till You Get Enough and Billie Jean will always be awesome and it is not Halloween without repeats of Thriller.

Thriller, in fact, is to Halloween what It’s A Wonderful Life is to Christmas…it would not be the same without it.

But, honestly, that comeback concert of his in London was going to be a disaster.  Speaking of Thriller, Jackson absolutely ruined it with the new take he did for this show.  Instead of the genuinely creepy, he went with comic, European zombies, a giant black widow spider, and other cheap parlor trick ghosts flying around on strings.  It was cheesy and cheap, despite costing millions, probably.  Nowhere near as good as the original Thriller.

The rest of the show was in the same vein.  Tons of the 90s-2000s weird “Heal the World” Michael, but thankfully not much of any kids running around.  Which would have been creepier than any zombies or ghouls.

We won’t rehash the Great Michael Jackson Debate we’ve had with Panda on many occasions regarding the child molestation charges (we think he did it, Panda thinks he’s innocent), but we’ll say that so long after his death, we’re at a place where we feel really sorry for Jackson for some things, but think he belonged if not in jail, then in a psychiatric center or other hospital.  He needed a lot of help, but was so rich and famous he had power enough to keep all help at bay…even help from the authorities.

We hope he’s at peace now.

We don’t think this comeback tour would have been the huge success he wanted.  We don’t know what all the fuss was about the production.  We certainly don’t see how Panda could have sat through it 6 times in theaters (with three of those being in a row, ON THE SAME DAY).  But, there are things we could watch all day and love so much that other people don’t understand, and we get that.

Did you ever see “This Is It”?  If so, what think you?

I was reading an article today about Orrin Hatch, idiot, and his take on how the TEA party movement will be a separate party. I read the comments and was totally incensed.

Do they hand out idiot guides in SLC? I know there must be some conservatives in SLC, but they called TEA Partiers “teabaggers” about 450 times and called us fascists and raaaacists and that they hoped the TEA Party evolved into a third political party.

I’m disgusted. My ex-husband was from SLC. Now I understand where this lunacy that he spouts comes from (not that I speak to him anymore).

    1. That I’m still at work and that sucks, BUT

    2. Other people have lost, and others will continue to lose, their jobs, so it doesn’t really suck that much at all.

    3. That I am a hardcore conservative, and a blog run by a bunch of Hillary Clinton-lovers has become one of my daily must-reads. :)

Yes, I am conservative too, and Hillbuzz runs a better website than some right wing ones. More thought provoking and less knee jerk, especially when it comes to Sarah Palin. They are more accepting of her than our brethern at times.

Too many of the ‘conservative’ sites are ran by the haters— women, gays, non-Christians etc. Yeah, I know they’re the tiny minority, but they come of as representing the majority.

What was funny on those sites were the PM’s of “Well, I’m really pro-choice, but I don’t DARE say it here!” or “My son is gay, but I like reading the articles here.” And so forth.

The rampant misogyny, homophobia, etc given passes by some because ‘its such a large site!’

This site is real. Real people, real beliefs and the way the real people (at least in my life) see the world. We don’t feel so alone anymore.

Agree. One of the great thing about this site (and there are many) is that it is like a buffet of discussion ideas. You can view a smorgasboard of beautifully arranged (and worded) ideas, take away what provides value to you, and reflect on things you might otherwise not have considered before. Food for the mind and soul.

I wish Newt would just throw in the towel, already. He irritated me about NY-23. I feel like he’s jumping ahead of the parade, just as it changes direction, and tries to take credit for the direction, just like “The Boys” have said.

        • Mark says:
          2010/02/20 at 1:26 am

        • JR Dogman says:
          2010/02/20 at 2:06 am

I agree. Newt is a very smart man and I like listening to him lecture and comment on history and politics — but I feel like he’s part of the old guard that is the problem.

Practically all of these people are what’s the matter with Washington. Even decent conservatives, if they’re above a certain age, they still think the MSM’s writing the script for them and they have to obey.

That’s why Newt was talking about getting the GOP to compromise with Obama, Pelosi, and Reid on the health care monstrosity. NO! We want it dead, we want to start over at square one — OR NO DEAL!

But Newt doesn’t get that, because his whole career and post-career has been as an Establishment guy. And though I support Palin’s supporting John McCain, the same goes for him — in his way he is as big a part of the problem as the worst of them, because he gives the worst a patina of respectability, because he still thinks CNN and the NY Times and ABC matter; he still buys their narrative enough so as to make serious missteps, based on what he thinks he must do, or the media will call him a racist or obstructionist or whatever crap they come up with.

We need a new generation of conservatives, people who, when they’re told what the NY Times just ran, say “Who cares what those liars print? They’re irrelevant!”

That’s the attitude we need — not one of conciliation.

        • Bijou says:
          2010/02/20 at 2:56 am

JR, Bravo! I couldn’t agree more about Gingrich, who, IMHO, is a legend in his own mind.

Fox, especially Hannity and Van Susteren, often have him on as a guest, and he bleats on and on, in the mistaken belief that he’s (still) relevant.
I wish they’d just stop and maybe he’d go away.

        • JR Dogman says:
          2010/02/20 at 3:11 am

          Bijou,

Yeah, I know — but he still does know a lot. My problem with him is what he doesn’t know, as I suggested. Even really solid guys like him, or like George Will, they don’t understand what exactly the New Media has done, I think because they don’t quite get what the *old media did*.

          Why do I say this?

For a couple of reasons: One is age, which, like it or not, is related to technical savvy. But the second reason is more important: These individuals have been part of a game that was set up by the MSM, and they learned to play it. The game said, “These are the Republicans you are allowed to run. These are the ones we will destroy before they even get out of the starting gate. These are the things you are allowed to comment on, and these are the things you may NEVER comment on, or we will destroy you,” and, like citizens of a totalitarian state, they learned to “tiptoe” so well in their MSM-sanctioned existences, and were so well-compensated for filling their sanctioned roles, that they forgot they even were tiptoeing, or that they were in any role at all.

But they have been tiptoeing. Now, to admit that, it might hit them, psychologically speaking, in a pretty nasty way — even though it shouldn’t — and human nature being what it is, they’re not going to go looking to admit that; rather, their instinct will be to keep playing the role given them; that way, in their minds, it won’t ever have been, or be, a role — a confined space they were pushed into occupying.

It’s quite a phenomenon, really, when you think about it.

“We need a new generation of conservatives..”

Good point! Actually you are getting a whole new generation of conservatives and they’re coming from the most unlikely places, LOL.

Obama certainly deserves credit for making people want to return to the roots of conservatism, but I think it may have started with Bush. People are really tired of a big ballooning federal government and massive spending.

I was a big Newt fan until about a month ago when he supported our governor, Brian Schweitzer (Dumba$$-MT) over his energy accomplishments. BS hasn’t “accomplished” anything – he just takes credit for stuff others did or makes up stuff that sounds good. GRRRRRRRRR….

Some people should just keep their noses out of other people’s business!

        • JerseyGram says:
          2010/02/20 at 1:06 pm

Now that you mention him, Newt is a great historian. He loves history and should return to the University to teach it. It would be the best place for him at this time to affect our little mush minded “not-ready-for-higher-education” college age children that, due to the leftists taking over the education industry, know or appreciate NOTHING about how this great country’s constitution emerged from such a brilliant group of men from all walks of life – manufacturing, farming, law, finance, smithies, et al and the brave women who supported them while tending to homesteads that included rough winters and lots of livestock. Most of those men had no more than 6 to 8 years of formal education. And how they put everything they and their families had earned, collected, and built at risk [not to mention their lives] to free the people of the colonies from the punitive taxation of that bully George.

It might help the “kids” [and that includes our young media "celebrities"] to understand what the Tea Party movement is all about. It’s not about the tea or the bag. It’s about the taxes and the freedom to keep more of our monies to direct our own lives instead of having some “committee” decide what we can or can’t do with said monies.

I’ve been thinking all afternoon how much better off Tiger Woods would be if he had went on Oprah and cried and gotten hugged, instead of the horrible “press conference” with no press fiasco he attempted. Tearful, unscripted confessions work every time. Ask Mark Mcguire. Plus, another bonus: If he HAD gone on Oprah, Tiger might have been able to rub all up on her. He probably needs it. It has to be pretty slim pickin’ down at Sex Rehab.

He disappointed many parents of children who held him up as a role model, and certainly hurt his family in ways that most men who cheat do. Frankly, I’m annoyed at the sanctimonious media celebs who say “It wasn’t enough”. He owes apology to no one but his family, the parents out there who relied on him to be who he portended to be, and of course his sponsors. The women he cavorted with knew he was married and they were all adults. Experienced adults. Now they are out there with their lawyers crying on television that they are “owed” something for their experience. Ha! The media watched him cavort and said nothing. Now he should get back to what he does – play golf. Dive back in and work as hard as he can to win every damn tournament that is out there. Then you will see hypocracy like you’ve never seen it with the same media whores celebrating him like he’s the 2nd coming.

If there could ever be a moral to this story it would be that married men [and women] shouldn’t cheat on their spouses and famous men shouldn’t cheat on their wives in such a flagrant manner that they are bound to get caught. But since we have stories that go back to biblical times and the great Greek myths as well, I don’t imagine some humans are capable of learning from history.

The speaker was wrong to make the speech. GoProud consists of conservative gays. They have as much right to be heard as anyone else.

It is time that everyone stopped the differentiation because of sexual orientation. We do not need to know about one’s bedroom preferences. What matters is the politics – conservative values.

      I am a conservative-libertarian.

(I’d be a full out libertaian, but I’ve come to the realization that libertarionism is as much of a wishful utopian dream on the right as socialism is on the left. Besides, most of the people I see in the libertarian party are as whacked as progressives.)

You know what, though? Deep down in my in my libertarian heart I want to kick this guy’s ass.

As the Boyz can attest, someone who is hardwired gay cannot be converted straight, and someone who is hardwired straight cannot be converted gay. So, what is this clown’s problem? He hurts the conservative cause, but, more importantly, he hurts my country.

I was going to post about this!

The Hot Air commentary makes a very good point: The minute that conservatives and republicans begin forcefully and publicly standing up for gay rights (as the left continues to prove themselves all talk and no action on gay rights) the dems need to be verrrry afraid.

As a republican, I am SO PROUD that people in my party and representing my party are finally vocally and proudly beginning to advocate for gay rights. This has been so long overdue, but I am just grateful that it’s happening. This is one of the proudest moments I’ve ever had as a republican. I’m so happy this assclown was booed off the stage – by a room of republicans and conservatives.

A watershed moment. And yes – dems should be verrrrry afraid. More than they already are! Their hypocrisy and lies are finally being revealed.

It is and has always been my hope and prayer that gays and lesbians would feel welcome and comfortable in the conservative movement and the republican party. I have always believed that since belief in personal liberties and states’ rights are core tenets of the conservative movement, that gay rights actually stand the best chance of fulfillment on the right, at the very least on a state level.

      WAY TO GO CPAC AUDIENCE!!!

        Kelly, you are right!

People forget [or never learned] that Lyndon Johnson’s Civil Rights Bill [really JFK's that he moved forward] was doomed until Barry Goldwater and his conservatives saved the day by voting for it – because Johnson couldn’t get enough DEMOCRATS to vote for it!!!

And let’s not forget that when Bill Clinton wanted to issue an executive order allowing gays to serve in the military without restraint, it was a DEMOCRAT [Sam Nunn] who stopped him. He was captured on video when asked about it he said “Not on my watch”.

I have always thought that when a woman was elected president, it would be conservatives who put her over the top. And when gay men and women were allowed to serve in the military without restraint, it would be conservatives who make it happen. With Dick Cheney coming out publically for it, I see it happening soon.

I’m still concerned with the shooting in Alabama. Maybe it’s because I grew up in a neighboring state (MS), maybe it’s because the one I’m currently in, (FL) went through an “un-newsworthy” shooting of its own, late last year; some disgruntled employee had downtown Orlando in lockdown for an afternoon and killed one person a week or so after Ft. Hood.

The Alabama shooter fired a shotgun round into her brother, fired off a couple more rounds and threatened a random person driving by her house in 1986. She was not charged, the records are missing and the DA at the time, Delahunt, is now in Congress? Umm…what?

I just listened to Kevin’s interview on Andrea Shea King. Great job, as always. You are a natural media personality and your love and respect for this country, as well as your knowledge of the political process, comes across loud and clear. Forget managing campaigns for others (as I have seen others suggest here)–YOU should run for office!

By the way, I completely agree with Kevin’s assessment of the Tiger Woods situation, and particularly his comment that Tiger doesn’t owe the world an apology. (I think that’s what he said.) I’m a casual golf fan and I have great respect for Tiger’s game but I’ve never thought of him as a nice guy. He commonly throws his clubs, swears and generally acts like an a$$ on the course. But, unlike a lot of famous people, Tiger has not tried to impose his personal beliefs on the rest of us, which I appreciate. His conduct is disgusting, but it is between him and his family. As Kevin noted, he is not a politician and he never asked the public to put its trust in him. The media’s lurid obsession with Tiger’s current problems is disgusting.

      I sort of agree.

However, I really have a hot button for rotten parents, especially fathers who mistreat/screw around on mothers.

For Tiger and the media to make it ‘all about him’ is like making the Texas Chainsaw Massacre all about the Husqvarna.

What about other things that everyone “should” have?? Like catastrophe insurance or burial insurance or … or .. or … A lot of things in life, we must look to other nations to see it exemplified, are not rights, but things to be earned!

DId you read Dana Milbank’s article calling Rubio the “Anti-Crist” over and over again? What is really pissing me off today is a clip from some Nevada talk show where Harry Reid says that Scott Brown is working with him and there is more than a 50% chance Brown will vote for the new stimulus bill disguised as a “jobs bill” UGHHHHHH

Immediately after the election, while everyone was in a state of Brown-induced Euphoria and touting him for president, I eyeeored and suggested everybody adopt a wait-and-see attitude, that we wouldn’t know Brown’s true colors until he’d voted on a couple of bills. With Dingey’s announcement that he & Brown are thisclose on a jobs bill, I rest my case.

“The public option was given up for dead, but in the last week, first a trickle, and now a flood of Democrats have been calling for it to be in the final ‘reconciliation’ bill,” says an alert from MoveOn.org. “It’ll be a whole new ballgame for the public option if President Obama throws his weight behind it too.”

    http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/82367-moveon-pressures-obama-on-public-option

    I loved this comment:

Move On won’t have enough $$ to get a Democrat elected dog catcher if Obama shoves this public option hc down our throats. Why won’t they listen to the American people? We have the right to know what the Senate/House are doing about hc and we have the right to know what he, Rahm, Stern, Axelrod and Big Phrma are cooking up this weekend at the Whitehouse. We will NOT forget this in November.

      NRO Online:
      Political Suicide [Yuval Levin]

The apparent decision to push Obamacare through reconciliation gives new meaning to the term political suicide. It will almost certainly fail, for one thing. And it will persuade rank and file Democrats in Congress that their leaders have lost their minds, and so will badly divide the Democratic caucus and make for a very difficult year to come for them. An ethic of every man for himself — which is what many House Democrats will have to adopt after this — is the last thing a party in trouble needs in an election year.

Look at the glass as half full. It will constantly inspire you to battle these Marxist pigs. They are never going to give up and neither will we. They are counting on us to lay down and die. They are in for a rude awakening.

Quite frankly, its no one’s business what Woods does behind closed doors and I for one could give two shakes of a lambs tail about what anyone, especially supposed ‘news’ reporters think. Woods plays in a sport that
really, in the greater scheme of things, is inconsequential. If he ends up being hired by a company to hawk their product and you don’t like him, don’t buy the product. That simple. The real problem I see is that this issue is symptomatic of a much larger problem, and that is the overall mental deterioration of the country into national OCD. We have become increasingly obsessed with minutia, opinion, gossip, criticism, perfection and spin. Aside from the fact that its all rather stupid and intrusive, it is also glaringly pointless. The media’s mawkish attention to this story three
months after the fact speaks more to their warped sense of perspective and
our compulsive need to self flagellate in public more than Woods’ private pecadillos. Does anyone really care where he puts his penis? I mean really.

      • Xana says:

I’d almost agree with you. Except marriage is a public contract, and a person violating that contract is therefore accountable in public to some extent. A married person giving his genitalia a study-abroad holiday isn’t just personally betraying his spouse, but also betraying a publicly acknowledged institution:

Someone who breaks contracts doesn’t just harm the contracts he breaks, but also harms the trustworthiness of ALL contracts through his bad example. This simple observation used to be widely understood.

That said, the Tiger Woods story bores me. An adulterer can’t complain about being exposed publicly, but the public can complain when the adulterer keeps on being exposed. And exposed. And exposed. Technicolor yawn.

Linking Joseph Stack to the Tea Party movement is no more reasonable than linking homicidal maniac Amy Bishop to the National Education Association, because they share her fawning obsession with Barack Obama. The implication that mistrust of our bloated, blind government is a gateway drug to terrorism reduces the American tradition of independence to a psychosis.

Instead of making ridiculous stretches to sell Stack as a Tea Party Minuteman to their dwindling audience, journalists should be probing the connection between Big Government corruption and Amy Bishop’s long career of unpunished violent lunacy. That’s the kind of investigation that might just save lives… and end the degenerate politics defended by its media janissaries, with a chorus of sneers aimed at the people who pay for it.

Term Limits!! The men who brought this country together with a constitution that we love did not stay in session for the entire year. And they did not stay in the “business” of politics and government all their lives. They had farms and businesses to attend to and frankly, there were no “perks” of high salary, pensions, health care to infinity, and outrageous amounts of toady assistants to pick up their dry cleaning and bring their kids to school and back.

Let them serve for 12 even 18 years and then get OUT! Go home and earn a living. The public does not benefit by their tenure.

I guarantee that if the pensions are scuttled and the health care is the same as the rest of us – they’ll be retiring rather quickly. That’s what we should be concentrating on. Other than voting them out, how can we make sure they don’t stay there until they die!?

People should be allowed to have their say without being shouted down. Sorba was booed, but he did have his say.

It is interesting that college students will shout down a guest speaker and not allow them to continue with their presentation. Then the students claim they are only exercising their free speech rights.

It does not occur to them that their “exercise” of free speech is a tactic to silence the opposition?

I am sure others are watching fox now, but they just announced the numbers for the CPAC straw poll. I am in disbelief..

    31%-Paul
    22%-Romney
    7%-Palin
    6%-Pawlenty
    5%-Pence

Ok, I actually don’t mind Ron Paul, and he probably would do a good job. That being said, he would NEVER win in a million years. Romney, just something about him that makes me wanna run, then again, I’m not a republican–never have been. Pawlenty and Pence, I know the least about of any of these, but can’t see then winning.

It’s really hard, because I am a hardcore Sarah supporter. Heck, I’d rather see Huckabee than Romney, just because Romney seems too much like what I always hated about Republicans, part of the elite establishment.

All that said, I would take any of these people over what we have now. I just can’t believe that Ron Paul won this thing. I’m guessing not a lot of Sarah supporters voted in it. She should have wiped the floor with these men!

As of this posting nobody else posted it, sorry if it’s a repeat. :)

Yeah but they said not all members voted in the straw poll and actually for Sarah not having been at the event she did well..they said most of the voters at the convention were 25 and under..being why Paul won. He is not a serious candidate. The word is that Romney worked hard for that vote and came in 2nd..they think he is toast..

I think they should raise the voting age from 18..most younger voters are not intelligent enough to vote these days…sorry it’s true.

        • Mark says:
          2010/02/20 at 10:19 pm

Don’t give up..keep fighting…we can overcome Romney…that is if Sarah even runs..but if she does we will have to fight hard for her.

        • Rose Marie says:
          2010/02/20 at 10:38 pm

My take on the Ron Paul win is that the conservatives are trying to send the Republicans a message. Just because Dr. Utopia is going to give the Republicans a big win in November, the Republicans shouldn’t take their votes for granted. We want candidates who will preserve, protect and defend the constitution of the United States. I don’t really care if they have an R or D after their name.

    • JerseyGram says:
      2010/02/20 at 10:37 pm

From what I understand, politicians that are serious about running for president and want conservative votes make sure that their supporters are at CPAC and that they vote. So, if Romney wants to show that he’s ahead or in the hunt, he brings a lot of people with him so to speak.

Ron Paul has a lot of libertarian support and CPAC attracts libertarians. So that support of him is not a surprise.

I would have thought Sarah Palin would have done much better. I don’t remember why she chose not to go but I remember reading that she would not go by choice. I would love to know why she “chose” not to go.

I personally loved the MJ movie and saw it twice at the theater. I felt that he was pretty darn active and was not as continually doped up as his doctor would have us believe. I walked out of the theater thinking that the doctor killed MJ.

Believe it or not but I stood in the Walmart and watched a large part of it on their wall of tv’s!

MJ was in the moment, coherent and very much part of putting together a great show – I loved seeing him work with the video guys, putting together a background piece for a song. He knew exactly what he wanted and hoe to accomplish it.

In the end it left me asking what went wrong? Why did he go nuts on his own face? Why did he end up doing weird stuff like hanging the baby out the window, etc.?

I don’t think the doctor killed him. What would have been his motive? I think MJ was taking a lot of narcotic meds and it ended up to be too much for his body.

  • Lisa says:
    2010/02/23 at 10:05 am

Aw, MJ … I remember when my best friend in the second grade had a crush on him (I preferred scott baio). He and Madonna owned the world’s music stage!

But then, alas, he became a complete freak. Looking at those two people, actually, is a good way to see how money and power can consume you from the inside out.

Madonna spiraled into a senior citizen skipping around onstage in lingerie … she doesn’t appear to be happy or content with her recent family issues … not to mention the boyfriend half her age. MJ turned himself into a complete sideshow and, then, killed himself with his obsession with drugs of various kinds.

We should be terrified of this kind of “success”!
