Saturday Night Open Thread: It’s Tebow Time!

Posted on January 14, 2012 by Bridget // Featured Content, Open Threads

It’s almost time.  In a little over an hour, Denver and New England will take the field for the AFC Divisional playoffs.  For the fun of  it…I thought I’d put up an open thread for anyone who wants to comment on the game.  I’ll be watching but I won’t promise any comments…it just depends on how my man Tim Tebow and the Broncos are doing.

I’m nervous.

Go Broncos  Go!

**********************************************

HB NOTE:

Can someone please write in comments an explanation for the whole Tebow phenomenon for those of us who don’t follow sports?

This is one of those situations where something important is related to either football, baseball, or basketball and I thus have no idea what’s going on.  It’s one of those gay-straight world disconnects for me — like if you were aware that Gaga was spotted in WeHo at Abbey and you can figure out that’s a singer but aren’t sure if she’s in LA or New York and you don’t know if Abbey’s a street or some other place. But, you know it must be fabulous and are sure gay people are talking a lot about it.

I know that Tim Tebow did an ad for a pro-life group that people talked about and I also know that he prays before games — and this has caused the Left to gin up a hate campaign against him because it’s one of the main missions of the Left to persecute Christians.  So, I understand this part.  I also get that Tebow seems to be a very nice guy who has become very popular.  I know who Tom Brady is because he has a fabulous beard and was the inspiration for one of those ripped from the headlines episodes of Law & Order: SVU about a handsome football player with a supermodel wife and you can fill in the blanks (or, maybe not, if you’re still trying to figure out what a WeHo is).

I think the big deal about this game is that it’s a championship or something, but it seems to me there is always some kind of championship thing on, so I can’t tell which one is the important one. Is tonight like the Emmy’s of football, or is it more Golden Globes?  I know the Super Bowl is the Oscars.  I am trying to understand the sports things based on either the entertainment or political worlds I know well.  Is this game like the New Hampshire or the South Carolina primary?  Why is it so important?

Is it a thing where people want Tebow to win to sock it to the Left? Because I am all down for that.  I also think the guy seems nicer and more honest about himself than Tom “Shady Lady” Brady, so there’s that.

I’d love someone to take the time in comments and really explain why you’re rooting so strongly for Tebow and what the larger phenomenon is about.  Some of this became important last year when I was sick and out of commission so I’m still trying to fill in some of the gaps from what I missed when I got disconnected from the zeitgeist like that.

Thanks -

K.D. for H.B.

I posted this the other day in the Tebow thread but I'm not sure I'm allowed to post videos. Anyway, I'll try again. This is another one of those Tebow music videos but it used an image of my son when we took him to meet Tebow during his last year at Florida. It was a birthday present for me since I know once he left the Gators we would have no chance to get a picture with him. ANYWAY, the producer of this video commented that he just got the image off Google search…my kids are thrilled. The picture is at the 2:16 mark.

One other thing that I think Kevin would really like. If you don't really get what the big deal is with this kid, read this…truly the best article I've read about him yet. He is right…walking the walk is SO much more important that talking the talk.

Being from New England, I would be very glad if the Patriots won the game tonight. However, because the opposing team is the Broncos, I really hope that they win. Finally, a major league football player who we can all look to as a role model for children and adults alike. Tim Tebow has been bucking the odds since before he was born, yet he remains even-tempered, determined, and gracious in his endeavors.

He is unabashedly confident in his Christian faith, he is humble about his athletic abilities, and he is generous with his time as he often helps charities benefitting children and others. He has not spent decades drinking to excess, mistreating women, or maiming and killing poor defenseless animals. And that is why I want this decent, hardworking, and remarkable young man to be victorious over my home team.

    Kevin,
To me, the big deal is about a young man who has a strong belief in God and isn't afraid to show it publicly. The liberal media (people like Bill Maher) have tried to mock him and bring him down in a disgusting display of anti-Christian idiocy. He didn't let it bother him though and he soldiered through the hatred and has led the Denver Broncos to the playoffs. His team has adapted their offense to best suit his style because they believe in him. He is a leader and an outstanding role model for today's kids. So if I have to put it into a non sports frame, it's about bringing God back into our society…out front and center in one of America's favorite sports and proud of it.

No matter how the games ends, Tim Tebow will still be a classy young man with his priorities in the correct order. He believes that each human being was created by a God who loves them and, as such, is entitled to be respected and shown love. He also believes, unapologetically, that God sent His only Son to Earth to redeem the aforementioned human beings from the wages of their own sin. (Anyone who believes that we're all basically "good" has never spent time with toddlers or politicians.) Therefore, the secular humanistic crowd is out to destroy Tebow, because his beliefs throw a wrench into their idea that they don't need God because they're just that special!

I pray for Tim Tebow, and people like him, because they are the future of this country and as such, I believe that Satan throws everything in his arsenal at them, because America is the last best hope for a world in desperate need of a City on a Hill.

Okay, in terms of significance, this game is like the Golden Globes or the Drama Desks – they come before the big event (Oscars or Tonys). Except here, it's elimination, so if the Broncos are out, they don't get to move on to the next round. So I guess in that case, it's like the SC or Florida primaries – where competitors start going in and not coming out again.

Tim is here today, because his Mom, against the advice of her doctors, CHOOSE LIFE. That was the commercial that brought the hatred of the LEFT down on this young man.

Most quarterbacks in the NFL (Aaron Rogers – Green Bay, Steve Young SF, ect…) spend years on the bench, behind the starting QB, learning their craft & paying their dues (think understudy & bit parts) before being handed the responsibility of leading 10 grown men in a very violent sport. Tim, got the lead role, and despite his inexperience, the pressure, and the odds, succeeded, and publicly THANKED GOD, making the LEFTistnistia heads explode.

When Tom Brady finally succeeded in the NFL, he left his pregnant girlfriend…. and the media, LOVES TOM, in fact, the NFL made special QB rules, just for Tom!

BINGO! Tebow's very existence is a threat to the Libtards – because, in their minds, he should have been aborted. Now that he DOES exist he continues to rub into them that they are wrong wrong WRONG by being one of the most like Christ of any famous Christian I've heard of since Reggie White walked the walk. By existing at all, and continuing to be a shining example of Christianity, his life is exposing the evil of the libs- which is driving them stark, raving mad.

and, reading below the circumstances regarding the birth, well, um, it's kind of like someone I know who insisted his wife do a VBAC for their second child (we won't get into the reasons). Yes, mom and child survived, but mom ended up having complications and it wasn't good. Yes, there are plenty of VBACs that are safe, but much of the research indicates it really shouldn't be done.
I respect the parents for their decision, but certainly understanding one's options is important, and listening to a doctor and understanding what they are saying is as important.

Don't hate on Tom Brady, it's not what Tim Tebow would do!

Anyway, the shortest explanation is that Tim Tebow is a Rorschach Test for leftists in media. He goes about his day praising God and spreading the gospel with a few open displays of faith in a game where players are allowed to do almost any silly endzone dance they'd like. The difference between the stupid victory dances and Tebow's quick prayers is twofold: 1. They actually mean something to Tebow and 2. They threaten the censors in the media because of (1.).

Basically if you're a football fan (or political watcher) and you're trying to figure out who NOT to listen to or read, just do a google search for that figure's name and Tebow. That should tell you all you need to know about them.

I'm just waiting for the NFL to make a new rule banning prayer on the field – especially after a touchdown. Or giving the team a 15 yard penalty or something if a player is caught openly demonstrating Christian beliefs. It grinds me so much that there are so many FELONS in the NFL and nobody says a word, but let a white guy be openly Christian and pro-life and the media heads explode. If Tebow was black they wouldn't be able to say anything 'cause that would be "ra-a-c-i-s-t."

I was watching the game at a party last night. Some of the people there were big old liberals, and some were conservatives. During the Saints-49ers game you couldn't tell the difference. But boy, once the Broncos-Pats game started, the knives were out for Tebow. I asked a couple of people sitting near me what, exactly, their problem was with Tebow. The only thing they cited was the
"Christian crap." Keep in mind, these people are Lutherans and Methodists, so they have been known to engage in the "Christian crap" themselves. When pushed, the bottom line was the pro-life advocacy that Tebow is involved in. Period. Those liberals sure do love them some baby killers, but when someone takes a stand against it, they throw all of their "love everyone" "non-judgmental" "to each his own" nonsense right out the window.

"More than 24 years ago, Pam and her husband Bob were serving as missionaries in the Philippines and praying for a fifth child. Pam contracted amoebic dysentery, an infection of the intestine caused by a parasite found in contaminated food or drink. She went into a coma and was treated with strong antibiotics before they discovered she was pregnant. Doctors suggested that she consid…er aborting t…he baby for her own safety and told her that the medicines had caused irreversible damage to her baby. She refused the abortion and cited her Christian faith as the reason for her hope that her son would be born without the devastating disabilities physicians predicted.

While pregnant, Pam nearly lost their baby four times but refused to consider abortion. She recalled making a pledge to God with her husband: If you will give us a son, we’ll name him Timothy and we’ll make him a preacher.

Pam ultimately spent the last two months of her pregnancy in bed and eventually gave birth to a healthy baby boy August 14, 1987. Pam’s youngest son is indeed a preacher. He preaches in prisons, makes hospital visits, and serves with his father’s ministry in the Philippines. He also plays football. Pam’s son is Tim Tebow."

What Tim Tebow does off the football field is far more important than what he does on the field.

I didn't read every link submitted here, but will add that Tebow won the Heisman Trophy (the biggest collegiate football award there is) his junior year at Florida, led the Florida team to National Championships his freshmen and junior years, and was drafted after finishing college last year to the Broncos. The Broncos haven't made it as far as they did last night for at least 10 years, so he's definitely added something to the team as their young quarterback.

The press started villifying him when the story of how his mother chose to give him life came out; he then participated in a pro life TV ad that aired during the Super Bowl, which of course is coveted air time indeed. Since joining the Broncos and outwardly showing his faith, he has been lamblasted by media, comedians (if you want to call Bill Maher that, personally I think he should have been fired for his comment that Tebow was f***** by Jesus after a loss a few weeks back…yes, actualy quote), as well as fellow players, who say he needs to tone it back

The left media has frothing seizures over Tebow almost as bad as they did with Sarah. That's why I'm paying attention and I don't much care for sports, particularly professional sports without the charm of amateurism or school loyalty and the grudges that are fun to a certain extent.

They were even mean to his mom, as if they think Tebow should be dead like they wanted beautiful Trig to be dead.

They are so miserably bad, so appallingly awful!

Have you noticed the huge ratings this has gotten?

It also has to do with the sports pundits, who predicted his failure on the field because he evidently has a "nonstandard" method of throwing. They'd like to see him fail because they hate to have their highly expert analysis of sports be incorrect! What I like about him especially is that nothing ruffles his feathers. The taunts and mockery just roll off his back. The media has yet to catch him saying anything ungracious about anyone's pokes at him.
