Ronald Reagan’s Farewell Address
A lot of people are saying today that Reagan’s Farewell Address is perhaps the best speech he ever gave.
If this one’s not your personal favorite, then which of Reagan’s speeches do you like best?

I don’t know if it’s a speech per say, but it is certainly my favorite Reagan moment.
Congress had been arguing and fighting and dithering on a budget and it had gone on and on forever. Finally, they presented Reagan with a budget. It was enormous and was so filled with pork and nonsense it was ridiculous (sound familiar?). President Reagan walked into the capital building with this huge stage of papers (the budget Congress presented to him for signature), he walked up to the speaker’s podium and stared out at all the congressmen. He threw the papers high into the air and they flew all over, fluttering down to the ground. Then he berated them for giving him a huge stack of papers that amounted to nothing and told them to get to work and give him a budget that was serious.
It was the greatest thing I have ever seen a president do….I cannot find it ANYWHERE, don’t know the date or the specifics, but I will remember it for the rest of my life.
I’d love for you to find that too…I think all that stuff went on before CSPAN was around. If you find it (even an article about it), please post. I’d love to see that!
I was fortunate as a child. We were the first in the neighborhood to get a television. The screen was about 9
inches square. Yes, of course it was black & white. More gray and gray and gray. We quickly became the Street’s most popular household. As I grew I remember Ronald Reragan telling stories from the box. My dad told me
He was a movie star. I grew more and to the point I was allowed to go on a field trip from school. It was to Applance Park in Louisville. Ronald Reagan was the Best speaker.
Even then as a grade schooler I could tell he was a Great man. I began to watch for him on tv and the Saturday movies. As as teenager I gave little thought to the man I had watched in
earlier days. I saw Jimmy Carter give a talk on all tv stations. It was a critical tme in our history. This was in, I beleivbe 1978. Ronald Reagan purchased air time the next night for a rebuttal to what the President had said.
I watched the full 30 minutes and that night late I sat down and wrote
a check top Ronald Reagan for the 1980 Presidential campaign. It doesn’t matter to me or Mr. Reagan that it was only for one dollar. That night I became dedicated and concerned about my country. That night I accurately predicted he wouild be our next President
It wasn’t like I was guessing or hoping to gety lucky. Everyday from
thast night I campagned for that man and what he stood for.
We have no other Ronald Reagan, but we do have a persom standing by ready to make that 30 minute talk to America for 2012. I am already speaking our for it to happen.

And here is his first speech as President =)
I was 16 yrs old at the time and I sat there and cried listening to him talk.
Yep…
Thank you for posting it…
I do believe that President Reagan via his 100 birthday and the celebrations around it is going to help us once more to focus on what’s important for the well being of our nation, and where we should go from here.
I may sound naive but I trully believe that if his farewell address was played for the Supreme Court before they make a decision on the constitutionality of ObamaCare, they will side with us.
4 of them probably know it by heart. It was that speech in which Reagan warned us all that if we weren’t vigilant, our freedoms would be eroded. And that we have to pay attention to American history. “All great change in America begins at the kitchen table”. Also that the media and pundits didn’t see or appreciate “Reagan’s Regiments”. That was us…the citizens of the US with our calls and letters to congress to get things done. He also warned about “fashion and fads” – that American patriotism should not be fashionable or a passing fad. It should just be. Those warnings and that lesson is exactly what we are going through today. Lack of education of our uniqueness and exceptionalism. Most DID NOT pay attention to his warnings because we are now being called “extremists” for our love of country.
PS – that part of the speech begins around 15:15 thereabouts…
I do not worry about these 4, I worry about the rest
I do not worry about these 4, I worry about the rest of them
Which of Reagan’s speeches do you like best?
All of them.
Happy Birthday Mr. President.
An immigrant from Southeast Asia.
I was also verymoved by the speech he gave after the Challenger exploded. Very hard to top “they touched the face of God”.
Preceded by “slipped the surly bonds of earth…”
We were in Japan when that happened chasing away Soviet MIGS on a daily basis…and it was so surreal when the Challenger blew up. Reagan’s speech gave us all comfort.
Argh. “very moved”, not “verymoved”.
Here is my favorite, delivered without a teleprompter or notes!

It was at this moment that the convention was unnerved that they had chosen the wrong man. Watch how silent the crowd gets around 5 to 7 minutes in. They were mesmerized. I loved Gerry Ford and Betty too but this was perhaps the most crazy primary season ever. Reagan was the right man at the right time and had to wait 4 years. We would never have had to deal with Iran and hostages. Reagan would have gone in immediately with planes ships shock and awe.
I did not watch all of it. There is no need. The opening comments is enough.
President Reagan spoke from the heart. It is very obvious.
Even Gerald Ford comes across as a good man… and he was a good man, thrust into the Presidency due to circumstances beyond his control.
President Reagan will always be loved by me.
Yep…that was my favorite and it’s why I posted in the other Reagan thread. Honestly, I was 24 when he gave that speech and I was such a dope back then. I don’t even think I watched or cared about politics at all. But I didn’t have to…we had adults in charge back then. I made my daughter watch it tonight and I also sent the link to her History teacher requesting he show it to his classes.
This is bar none the best speech I have ever seen Reagan give. It may be 30 minutes, but every time I watch it, I want to watch it again and think it is worth repeating frequently. THIS is the conviction of Ronald Reagan.

I agree!
Two stand out for me:
His first inaugural address. My wife and I were there and the final five minutes in particular are truly inspiring. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpPt7xGx4Xo
Secondly, his comments on the day of the Challenger tragedy were beautiful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qa7icmqgsow
Two come to mind:
His first inaugural address. I was there with my wife to hear it in person and it was inspiring. Difficult times and he left you feeling like no obstacle was to tough to overcome. The last few minutes were especially moving.

The remarks he made on the day of the Challenger tragedy were beautiful.

this is not a speech – but a Carter speech with the classic Reagan reply!

btw…Reagan fought off CarterCare but Romney and Obama helped fulfill the dream of Cartercare
Even Mondale is laughing. He knew he was beat
Huh, funny that his best speech was his last as Pres. I thought his piece of garbage son and the liberal media said he was ravaged with dementia. Yes, he slacked off the no. of hours as his diary says. But he got the job done 1981 to 1989
Notice that he said that the American people, not the government, created new jobs?
BTW, no way someone who’d been suffering from Alzheimer’s for four years could give this.
