Question of the Day: Would a major terrorist attack boost Obama's approval ratings?
Last night, at Sidetracks for Showtunes Night, of all places, we overheard a few guys talking around the long central table in Side Bar about the latest attempts by Muslims to blow airliners out of they sky. Not that we were eavesdropping, but we were totally eavesdropping. One of the guys said he still thinks Bush let 9/11 happen so that his approval ratings would rise, because whenever anything really bad happens, people rally around the president and love him again. “Oh, s***, if that’s true then we all better watch out, because Obama’s numbers are in the toilet so I hope Rahm doesn’t get any ideas,” is what another in the group said.
This thought practically gave us nightmares, and has been on our mind ever since.
Rahm Emanuel is a vile, hideous, human being.
He has no morals, no scruples, no sense of decency, and knows no limits in the quest for whatever he wants. There has never been anyone like him, not even in the Nixon Administration, in the position of White House Chief of Staff. The MSM liked to call presidential advisor Karl Rove “the evil genius”, and genius we’ll grant him, but evil’s certainly been redefined since Rahm Emanuel started work at the White House.
The Keystone Kops routine Janet Napolitano seems to be running at Homeland Security gives us great pause. “Big Sis”, as she likes to be called, embarrassed herself more than usual this week, first claiming security measures worked fabulously, and that there was no problem at all with a Muslim carrying high-explosives in his underwear and almost killing 300 people en route to Detroit. Now, we realize 300 people being killed in Detroit doesn’t seem at all unusual, but typically they’re killed after arriving in the city itself, one at a time, picked off by what’s left of the population in the classic example of what happens to a perfectly good city when placed squarely in Liberal control for generations. The only reasons those people aboard the Christmas Day Delta/Northwest are alive all fall under Christmas luck: the Muslim wasn’t well-trained enough to detonate the bomb, the Muslim who made the bomb didn’t design it well enough, and a hot Danish alpha male leapt across other passengers and stopped the Muslim from being able to fiddle with the device enough to actually set it off.
Big Sis, this is not fabulous security. It’s a tragedy averted only by the intervention of angels, however you wish to define them. Such as hot Danish guys.
As we’ve stated on this site many times, we’ve come to reevaluate the Bush Administration since Dr. Utopia and his band of loons took over last January. It’s preposterous to believe people who love this country with their whole hearts would allow it to be attacked just to boost approval ratings. We do not believe, for a moment, that Condoleezza Rice deliberately ignored any warnings about Al-Queda, as Liberals keep insisting. We believe, instead, that the incoming Bush Administration in 2001 inherited hundreds if not thousands of plots in the works against the United States. They stopped as many of them as they could, just as the Clintons stopped as many as they could on their watch. The USS Cole and Oklahoma City got through in the 90s, but the attacks on Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Hoover Dam, and the New Year’s Eve 1999 bombings were stopped. 9/11 happened, but Bush prevented scores of other attacks, from hits on the Sears Tower to the bombing of New York’s subways.
We do not believe the Clinton or Bush Administrations would ever have allowed Americans to be killed just so approval ratings would rise. Not in a million years.
But, what about this current administration? What about Rahm Emanuel, the foul-mouthed, vicious Chief of Staff, who believes every day should be all-out open war on someone for political purposes?
We do not believe the current President of the United States loves or respects this country. His presidency is the culmination of his own narcissism and egomania. He is not in office to serve the people, but instead to be served as the world’s largest and most self-important celebrity. We believe, truly, he couldn’t care less whether Americans lived or died, so long as he looked smokin’ on the next GQ cover.
But, that’s still a giant leap to conclude he’d deliberately allow Muslims to murder Americans in the hopes he’d receive a 9/11 style boost in the polls. As much as he wants his approval to be 90% like Bush’s was in September of 2001, even Dr. Utopia himself wouldn’t, in our opinion, take the chance of allowing a major terrorist attack on US soil. The potential for that backfiring on him is too great for him to risk anything like that. Just because Bush received that massive wave of support doesn’t mean Utopia would, and he knows it.
However, we do believe a major Muslim attack on the US is more likely in 2010 than it’s been at any time in our lifetimes, because this current administration is inhibiting the collection of intelligence from terror networks, is aggressively targeting and persecuting those in the CIA and military charged with obtaining intel, and views Muslims as misunderstood Care Bears picking daisies while spreading ‘The Religion of Peace” through any means necessary.
We’ve likened the current president to Timothy Treadwell before, the idiot naturalist in Werner Herzog’s “Grizzly Man” documentary. Treadwell believed grizzly bears were just misunderstood Care Bears. He thought all they needed were hugs, and that possibly the addition of kisses and maybe well-placed rainbows would turn these aggressive killers into the bestest of friends. He and his girlfriend were eaten by bears.
Hope!
Change!
Grrrrrrrr!
When Muslims hit us in the next three years, it’s not going to be because Rahm Emanuel and Dr. Utopia decided he needed an approval boost so they deliberately let it happen — it will happen because the current president is naive and in over his head, but more dangerous than that, he truly does believe Islam is “The Religion of Peace” and Americans must submit themselves to it. He thinks our military and intelligence networks are too tough on terrorists, and that hugs and kisses would be more effective than the intelligence-gathering techniques that have kept America safe since 9/11. His Justice Department, under notorious race-baiter Eric Holder, makes it more and more difficult every day for our best trained operatives to do their jobs to keep Americans alive in the face of daily Muslim threats. Homeland Security, under Utopian Big Sis, might as well be run by the Marx Brothers (whose far distant relative, if in name only, the current president is evidently quite fond of).
This is a perfect storm of naivety, gross incompetence, dereliction of duty, and idiocy that’s tilting the odds towards a major attack on US soil where many lives will be lost.
The current administration is not, in our opinion, doing enough to prevent this.
When, not if, it happens, the White House will indeed follow Rahm Emanuel’s directives to “never let a good crisis go to waste”, and we believe won’t be all that broken-hearted when something bad goes down — even if they didn’t intentionally let it happen.
The MSM sold you a bill of goods that these people you sent to Washington on wings of Hope! and Change! are really magical unicorn-riders full of rainbows — when those of us from Chicago know who they really are, and can tell you it’s less Care Bear and more dangerous than anything you’d ever be unfortunate enough to stumble upon in the woods.
Heaven help us all.
They are almost as bad as the Muslims plotting to kill us — and they are the ones charged, currently, with keeping us all safe.

As usual you hillbuzz guys hit the nail on the head. If this Administration of kooks and crazies could think in terms of the terrorists of today as Hitlers SS, they might get on the right track, any track.
The terrorists are mindless killers just as the SS was. We loyal Americans will continue to look out for one another, obviously in defiance of this current administration.
I’m glad I discovered your blog.I enjoy reading and tweeting it.
I’ve never feared my government until the last couple years. The only thing transparent about the administration thus far has been Rahm’s crisis statement. It offered insight into their need to seize power and that they will shred freedoms to do it.
Will terrorism land again on American soil? Yes. No doubt about it.
I don’t believe that a terrorist attack would help the perception of Obama’s administration at all. It’s been pretty apparent that he is a weak president so I think it would cause him far more harm than good.
Right now, the Left is spinning this recent attack as Jim DeMint’s fault, though, so who knows? These people are obviously crazy.
DeMint? Sheesh….. how desperate. I had not heard that one.
DeMint is my Senator (forget Lindsey). Jim is a decent, regular American who is a fiscal conservative. He may be more socially conservative than I am, but he doesn’t BS about who his is and what he believes.
He’s had a tough time in the Senate always fighting an uphill battle. He has said many times that it’s very lonely these days being a conservative and that we need to send in the cavalry.
We need more people like Jim in Congress. Perfection is not what I’m looking for, but decency, honesty and a sense of true public service will be enough for me.
His efforts to kill the Reid bill impressed me, and he’s not finished yet.
This is a plausible scenario. The obamnots would start whining about how harrrrrrd a job he has, just like like now they’re all about “he needs a vacation, he works so harrrrd”. Working is harrrrd.
The whining has already begun- AP just did a stupefyingly dumb puff piece on how hard utopia’s job has been in his first year. Here it is:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091229/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_tired_obama
Written by something called “Julie Pace”, which is something synonymous with the term “complete imbecile”.
what has he done that is hard? All he has done is give long winded speeches and look at himself in the mirror. Then as he has gone tripping around the world he has done a lot of farting so that he has to bend over and sniff them.
Like always Boyz, spot on…but…
I can’t help but shake (and tremble) the fear that there is a touch MORE to this ‘Muslim Jones’ Dear Leader is so soft on.
Remember his quote (yes, words can come back and haunt) “there is no sweeter sound on Earth, than the (Islam) call to prayer!” Maybe a small child giggling, Pachelbel’s Canon, the bell on a Good Humor truck…but…to Barrack Hussein it was that prayer screech, warbled five times a day.
Then there was that weaselly George StepOnAllofUs (didn’t he thank the Clintons!!!) CORRECTING candidate Obama, who tiredly (or honestly–what a surprise there) blurted his “Muslim faith” (and Georgie quickly stepped in–it literally–to correct him that Dr. U you’re Christian!!! Memba!!!)
No…I think we have quite the trio in power there…two self hating Jews (Axelrod and Mr. DeadFish) enabling their Muslim Messiah.
Scary, huh?
M Q-C: I savor every word you write … and this offering is no exception. George Steponallofus … beautiful nickname for that odious dwarf. However, your last paragraph absolutely cuts to the chase. Well done.
I don’t believe that the nation would necessarily rally around President Obama if there were a large incident. We have something to compare him to, you see. We did not have a comparator with Bush; we just know he looked in charge, was ready to make decisions, and acted.
You need a man of action to deal with mass casualties. Recall that Rudy was tanking in the polls pre 9-11 as well; the catastrophe happens, he acts, and becomes America’s Mayor.
I have no reason to believe Mr. “Deliberative” would suddenly become a man of action. He is the anti-Bush after all. What would happen is the American people would demand action and ignore him altogether if he failed.
What “the public” learned about itself on 9-11 was that you CAN’T “wait” for “someone else” to protect you. That’s why the passengers on Flight 93 were heroes: they heard via cell what was likely to happen and they were NOT having it on their watch. Same with the Dutch passenger over Detroit.
Mr. Obama: the American public will not HAVE it. Get your sh&t together on this stuff or get ready for the speaking tour to dwindling audiences come 2012.
LU
Absolutely agree. Also, before 9/11, no one believed it would actually happen here. Terrorists had attacked American interests overseas but never on our own soil. Although I in no way believe Bush allowed 9/11 to happen to boost approval ratings, Bush had the element of surprise…for lack of a better term. Since then we’ve seen these monsters mutilate members of our military and attempt to attack us again and again. Obama doesn’t have the luxury of American naivete. His administration may be operating with a pre-9/11 mentality but Americans are not. Bush kept us safe…hate him or love him, that is undisputed fact. This system that Planet Janet both praised and blamed managed to keep us safe for years. As they are now obviously on the Blame Bush Express yet again, I’m thoroughly confused as to why Obama would continue the policies and procedures of a man he so clearly believes to be the stupidest person on earth. He’s had an entire year to change it all. I suppose it’s easier to do nothing and blame everyone else than it is to be a big boy.
I’d like to think that POOTUS’s handlers realize that he’s already being criticized for his ineptitude, and for his reflexive Bush-bashing, and that the public response is more likely to be outrage than praise. E.g., “He’s been blaming Bush for everything wrong with the country and touting himself as our redeemer and savior. Yet while there were no more successful terrorist attacks after 9/11 on Bush’s watch, the first year into this dickhead’s presidency, we got hit.”
P.S. LOVE the Grizzly Man parallel. It’s spot on!
First of all, President Bush didn’t need an approval boost 8 months into his Presidency. His numbers were still good (and about twice what Obamalama’s are) when 9/11 happened. So the Sidetracks guy saying that is basically an idiot.
Second, President Bush’s ratings went up because of how he handled the crisis, not because it happened. Obamalama has proven himself to be spineless and ignore the warning signs of more attacks on our country. President Bush took that megaphone, stood on the rubble, and reassured the people. Obamalama took three days before taking a break from the golf course in Hawaii to even comment (a lame one at that) on the current attempt to blow up a plane.
The man is a failure.
Look at how Obama has already ignored the terrorist attack on Fort Hood! I guess dead soldiers don’t count for much to this Traitor in Chief.
If we’re attacked, Obama is DONE. Americans knew Bush kept us safe, and if Obama can’t do that, then NO ONE will support him.
But he’s too stupid to know that. I truly think the man is a certified idiot. And people called BUSH and idiot? Puleeese.
Re idiot status …. I’m still curious about just how Obama’s college grades compare to Bush’s. As he has yet to release them, I guess we’ll never know.
Ten, he can’t release them. If he does his status as a Foreign national will be revealed. He also will not produce the passport he used in the 90′s to travel back and forth to Pok-ee-stahn.
And Obama’s refusing to release information they have about Fort Hood. What is wrong with this man? This is information we have a right to know.
Don’t forget that in spite of how badly we thought of Bush, we still hear “We didn’t get attacked again on his watch”.
That’s the reason I think Obama will fare very poorly if we are attacked again. He has shown that he is unwilling to protect us from his friends, the Muslim extremists.
O didn’t do himself much good with that brief public statement about the attempted attack; according to Rasmussen’s polling he’s sliding downwards again.
And, pardon me for pointing out the oversight, but Jasper Schuringa is a Dutchman, not a Dane.
Excuse me… believe the terms our utopian imbecile president used were “Alleged attack” by the “alleged terrorist” that acted alone.
Cept for the fact that actual eyewitnesses, on the plane, saw another man VIDEOTAPING (per Drudge) the whole incident. Failure or practice run? The Feds (not that the C-i-C would care to mention this) are ‘looking’ for that passenger.
Which begs the question, how do they NOT know who that man is and where he (and the tape) are? So, was he flying with a fake passport, purchased the ticket with cash? How do they NOT have that chronicling passenger?
True, true.
I do wonder when people are going to start remarking that he is “allegedly” the President. Moreover, it does strike me as being not a little odd that O is so fond of the word “alleged,” when against him there have been raised so many — allegations.
Allegedly a US citizen. Alledgedly born in Hawaii. Allegedly a Christian.
Allegedly brilliant.
Allegedly paid his own bills in Chicago.
Personally, sinister motivations seem quite possible, if not probable.
But sinister motives are not necessary.
The principal objection to this man before election was his having done nothing, not a single thing, which qualified him as president.
To the contrary, every little thing we were permitted to learn about the man indicated someone with really, really bad judgment at best.
His deepest beliefs appear to be antithetical to America, but it is not necessary to go that far to conclude he is a disaster, and a dangerous disaster to boot. The pre-election objection looks like perfect analysis.
This man went from zero to Jimmy Carter in seven seconds. It can and will get worse.
George Will once said about difficult political times that we always manage to muddle through.
There is a lot a wisdom in that. But it just does not feel applicable to the reign of Dr. U.
Tonawanda- very well put. Somebody smart once said:
“Never ascribe to evil genius what can also be assigned to mundane stupidity.”
Think your post does a good job buttressing that concept.
Also your line: “This man went from zero to Jimmy Carter in seven seconds” is pure and unalloyed genius.
Will be using this (with attribution) a great deal in future. Well done.
I’m stealing from you too, tonawanda!
Great lines, and spot on.
The secret of my originality is plagiarism.
Although I don’t think a terror attack would boost Obama in many peoples eyes, I also do not think Obama cares. He might welcome an attack, however, because it would make it that much easier to carry out his agenda. Martial law, confiscate guns, etc., what better reason than a terrorist attack? And then he would surrender America to whoever attacked us.

That is really scary.
When I look at the style of these cases, several appear to be convictions after trials and litigation under the Bush admin.
And we are in deep dung with zero at the helm.
He would experience an uptick in support, especially if there is a forceful response.
Also, God forbid, the attack is catastrophic, then he would indeed experience a boost as Americans come together to answer the threat.
I would rally around Americans in general, but I would still NEVER trust that man, Pelosi, or any other Democratic leader that currently sits in Congress.
Why are some of my posts not making it on to this site? I feel like I am typing for nothing, and there is no way to retrieve what I’ve typed. Any idea what is happening here?
(Watch, this comment will make it for everyone to read).
I am certainly not trolling this site.
You have to be patient. Sometimes it takes a couple hours or longer to show up.
Doesn’t happen a lot, but it does on occasion.
Probably a glitch.
To avoid the frustrating experience of having worked on some post only to have it disappear, copy and paste it from the “submit comment” window onto a notepad. That way you keep it available and you do not have to re-write.
Yeah, I’ve done that already, but only after I experienced one of my posts disappearing. So, in that situation, I end up with one post that I have spent time on to be replaced with another post that I spend much less time on. Granted, disappearing post don’t happen all of the time, but they have happened to me a few times this past month. Initially, I thought that I might have be banned for some reason, believing that Hillbuzz thought I was a troll. That’s the furthest from the truth! I may not agree 100% with every minute detail here, but I think a lot like Hillbuzz, and that’s why I like to visit their site.
nomobama,
Take a quick look at the FAQ’s on the website. I’ve had the same thing happen, but apparently it has more to do with filters. I posted something with a link to Youtube, and it took over 12 hrs. to post. Thought I was banned!
The fact that gave himself a B+ makes me think he’s far too arrogant to care about his approval rating. Also, as some people have already said, his approval ratings would actually go down if we have another attack because he wouldn’t handle it well.
A major terrorist attack will be the coffin of Obama just like the Ft. Hood attack has been for his poll numbers.
Allegedly Allergic
[Mark Steyn]
National Review
Dec. 28, 2009
Jonah, your allegedly alleged reader’s observation on “clinical legalism” is just right. Putting aside the stuff that was just plain wrong (this guy’s an “isolated extremist” – oh, yeah?), the President’s remarks had a horrible desiccated complacency. “Alleged…” “suspect…” “charged…” – because this is no different from a punk holding up a gas station, right? In all their alleged allegedness, this Administration has an allergy to the concept of war, and thus to the tools of war, including strategy and war aims. In essence, they’ve accepted a Fort Hood model for this challenge: every so often, something will happen and people will die, and we’ll seal off the crime scene and take the alleged suspect into alleged custody. But it’s reactive, and it cripples our ability to prevent the death of innocents.
There’s a difference between an alleged suspect (which is what he is is the President’s fantasy) and an enemy combatant (which is what he is in reality). If this were a war, we would question him about who he hooked up with in Yemen, who did he meet with in London, and maybe get a lead on attacks to come. Instead, the authorities, having issued the Knickerbomber a multi-entry visa, having permitted him to board the plane, and having failed to detect his incendiary unwear, now allow him to lawyer up and ensure that we’ll never know who he knew in Yemen or anywhere else.
This would be a big enough gamble in the best of circumstances. Up against the broader background Derb discusses, it makes disaster inevitable.
http://www.nationalreview.com
It won’t improve his standing if he handles it as poorly as he’s handled the two that have already happened.
He won’t even admit that the Ft. Hood killer is a jihadist (even though the killer screams it from the mountains), and it took him 3(!) days to even address this latest one.
And, if it is somehow perceived that his magical mystery apology tour actually *encouraged* attacks, then woe be to him and all in his administration.
Not only will his approval ratings go down, he will be lucky not to be tarred and feathered in the street.
I think it’ll destroy him. Here’s why:
His policies and attitudes toward other nations (i.e., the bowing, the aloofness toward a nuclear Iran, his buddy act with Chavez, his FUBAR on Honduras) are starting to tell people that Obama’s priority is not America nor American citizens.
His tepid response to the Ft. Hood shootings, as well as the show trials in NY for KSM and others, are just adding fuel to the fire.
If there’s an attack on American soil, costing American lives, this lackadaisical attitude, coupled with this administrations tendency to play the BLAME BUSH card over and over and over again will just tick people off.
No one will rally around Obama because he’s done nothing to encourage us to rally around him. Nada. Zip. Zilch.
For better or worse, Bush was motivated by his love of America. After 9/11, the empathy and anger he felt was genuine. We have yet to see a genuine emotion emanate from Dr. Utopia, save the few times he’s seemed irritated that things weren’t going is way and we hadn’t crowned him king of life yet.
…and when he wasn’t allowed to eat his waffle in peace!
It would depend upon how he handles the situation, but under extreme stress one can only imagine that he will prove to be even less adequate than he is under normal circumstances.
No matter how much liberals ooze with admiration over his, “cautious, consideration,” people are seeing that he is actually a procrastinator. The reason is that he is completely unqualified for his position, and he’s clearly uninterested in the hard work of governing.
He outsources everything. Things that he deems important like “date nights” in NYC or dumping on the Cambridge, Mass police receive immediate attention.
The public is becoming aware that we have an effete, elite, playboy POTUS. That sentiment is reflected in his polling numbers. Congress’ are worse. Combined, it looks to me as though we are seeing a complete lack of confidence in this government by a large swath of the population.
My prediction is that should we have a terrorist attack (another one – let’s not ignore Ft. Hood) that involves the loss of civilian life, Barry will be hiding under MO’s ample skirts.
Ample skirts. LOL!
9/11 came as a complete shock to pretty much everyone in this country.
Bush reacted appropriately. He was measured, calm, resolute, and clear. There was no use of lawyerly phrases like “we were allegedly attacked today” or idiotic euphemisms like “man-caused disasters”.
We were attacked, and not by a nation. Hence, terrorism.
The country rallied around Bush because he reacted appropriately and because people were fearful and very, very conscious of unity, family, and patriotism. If it had been Gore, or even Obama at that time, I think the reaction would be the same.
The next major terrorist attack to his the U.S. (which I believe is inevitable but hope and pray otherwise) will not arrive out of nowhere. The terrorism cat is out of the bag, no matter how hard Obama tries to put it back.
Sure, some folks will rally behind Obama because he’s the President. But all rational people will HAVE to wonder if his soft approach to terrorism and major changes to our interrogation policies led to the attack.
Even those who don’t wonder about that would have to wonder why the terrorists still hate us, even after electing the Boy Prince who was supposedly going to re-shape America’s image abroad.
So will Obama see a boost? Probably, but not nearly as large as Bush and not nearly as sustainable.
I also feel there’s at least a 30% chance that Obama would actually take a HIT in the polls if we were attacked.
Ed Morrisey wrote a post today that summarizes this administration and gives some insight into what we can expect with future challenges:
“The modern American standard for political leadership was set by Harry Truman, who put a sign on his Oval Office desk that read, “The buck stops here.” After almost a full year in office, Obama and his administration haven’t figured out that Americans expect that attitude from every President, and not a series of blamehifts to one’s predecessor, regardless of how unpopular he happened to be. They expect not just leadership from a President, but visible leadership, a muscular sort of public presence that shows tough decision-making and command of the facts and concepts involved in the decisions.”
http://hotair.com/archives/2009/12/29/the-obama-way/
My, my, is obnoxious, loudmouth Ed changing his opinion of his messiah, Obama?
