PETA wants the Bible rewritten so that animals have more respect.

Posted on March 30, 2011 by Bridget // Hillbuzz, Identity Politics, The Left

PETA protest

I really think that this world has gone mad.  First, the book of God was rewritten to be gender neutral (using the word “people” instead of the more traditional word “men”) and now….PETA has decided that it’s time to show the animals some respect.  So…if the Bible makes reference to a cow or a pig then they want the word “he” or “she” used instead of “it”.

(Gothamist) — After they heard that the latest translation of the New International Version of the Bible will now use gender- inclusive language such as “he or she” instead of just “he”, PETA saw an opportunity to change one other thing.

The organization has petitioned the Committee on Bible Translation to suggest that its next translation remove”speciesist” language, by referring to animals as “he or she” instead of “it.” “When the Bible moves toward inclusively in one area . . . it wasn’t much of a stretch to suggest they move toward inclusively in this area. Language matters. Calling an animal ‘it’ denies them something. They are beloved by God. They glorify God,” Bruce Friedrich, PETA’s vice president for policy, told CNN.

I have no problem showing animals respect…..I am a big animal lover… but this is crazy.  It was crazy to rewrite the Bible to appease the feminist groups and it’s crazy to rewrite it to appease PETA.  I advise you to go out and buy several copies of the original Bible because they are going to be collectors items soon.

Weasel Zippers  makes a good point…

How many overwhelmingly leftist PETA members actually read the Bible?

“It was crazy to rewrite the Bible to appease the feminist groups” – because only men are entitled to respect and representation in history or holy literature.
“and it’s crazy to rewrite it to appease PETA.” – because animals are nothing but “things”- cheap commodities that are only entitled to the value we humans choose to give them.
    Wow. Time to EVOLVE.

Sorry. I don’t think we ought to be intentionally mistranslating ancient works of literature just because some parts of it offend some people 2,000+ years later. A good translation is as close as possible to what the author intended it to be – not what we think the author would have intended it to be if s/he was born in 1965 instead of c. 600 BC.

Besides, the ideas within a text are more than just the words themselves, but the patterns on display. We lose an opportunity to notice and discuss gender bias (and species bias, if that’s important) if we start erasing the evidence.

I second those comments. Stick to the Jerusalem Bible. Do not use the NIV or those other translations.

The Douay-Rheims is a good substitute and translation.

The NIV translators have a lot of integrity. They weren’t making the NIV “gender-neutral” they were just trying to be more faithful to the original languages that often used gender inclusive terms that were translated “men” or “man” (Ie. When Jesus said “I will make you fishers of men” the gender neutral “anthropos” (people) is used in the original Greek and not the Greek work for man (aner).) So, a more accurate translation would be “I will make you fishers of people”, however, most people would understand that “men” in this instance means “mankind”, but in this day and age some do not, hence the translators desire to contextualize for the sake of accurate understanding by the reader. It would be a shame for some poor woman reading a traditional version, not understanding the inclusive language of “men” and concluding that God isn’t as interested in her as He is in being reconciled to males. It may sound laughable, but it does happen!

Whew! Sorry for the sermon, I just know that these translators weren’t bowing to cultural pressure, they wanted to make an accurate translation. In that vein, I know that any such request from PETA for such a translation would be laughed at. These men and women of NIV bow to God alone. So, you may not have to consign your accurate translations to extinction just yet ;)

      Thank you.
If you were to read the Bible(and I have)you would see that God loves his daugthers just as much as his sons. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that it is ok for men to mistreat women. And when some folks bring up that the Bible says that a wife should submit it her husband, they forget the other part of this-that a man should treat his wife as if she is a part of his body and that a man shall love his wife as Christ loves the church.
As for animals, man was given dominion over the earth. In the Old Testament animals were used as sacrifices in the tabernacle and the temple to communicate with God(offerings). Animals were not treated as people. God even said that there were to be no human sacrifices to Him(other beliefs at the time did use humans as sacrifices to their gods).
Changing the language in the Bible is changing God’s word to his people. No one can do this-let alone a group like PETA. Deuteronomy 4:2 says that you shall not add to the word which I command you or take anything from it. Peta loses.

I want no part of a gender-neutral, animal-friendly version of the Bible, thanks.

These people don’t read the bible, they just want the power to direct what we read. They want to control the words we use, and therefore, control what we’re allowed to think.
Gotta rid people of their thought crimes.

Thanks for clearing that up SJK. I was about to get very upset with NIV. Couldn’t see that people who have always been so careful in the way they interpret the Bible would suddenly go PC.

Tell PETA we’ll do it only after Islam has rewritten the Koran to show more respect to animals and all living things.

“buy several copies of the original Bible”
Read Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek much? Or, since you’re a Catholic, is the “original Bible” the Vulgate?
Somebody needs to tell PETA that Fred Phelps sacrifices cattle and drinks their warm blood.

I had to translate parts of the Vulgate for a Latin class… in fact, it was the first “real” passages we ever translated because it’s written using very by-the-book Latin grammar rules (as opposed to some of the crazy Latin poetry from the Roman days…)

PETA is only interested in one thing. Keeping their name out there. “Hey look at us! Notice us! Let us get in your face!”

I had a problem with my dog being illegally held by the local dog pound. I asked PETA for help and they couldn’t be bothered by a real animal emergency. They refused to answer any of my requests and wouldn’t return emails or return phone calls.

I wouldn’t throw water on PETA if they were on fire.

You are lucky PETA didn’t kill your dog like they do in VA. In the Norfolk, VA area they go around to shelters and collect pets to be put down. Per VA’s Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services’s online records, PETA has reported to the state that over the past 10 years PETA has murdered over 25,000 adoptable animals in the Norfolk, VA area.

If these people want to start their own religion, fine. More power to them. But telling me to alter mine to make them feel better? I will show some restraint here and just say “pound sand asshats”.

I know, not very “Christian” but I didn’t see a commandment about calling asshats “asshats”.

Hi. I am a Peta member and vegan and conservative. I think Peta is wonderful they are enacting real changes for animals. I like their street theatre, too. Clever and creative and entertaining. At least they are not morose or boring…while talking about a very serious topic.

As for the Bible…I am a student of the Bible and other religious texts. I, and others, really believe that God did not want us to harm animals but that animals were put here to be our friends. In return we are their stewards, take care of them and love them back. All are our co-inhabitants to share the planet with.

Great site on this perspective: http://www.all-creatures.org

And yet, I’d be willing to bet that they won’t use “he” or “she” when referring to an unborn child. That would humanize it and then show up the abortion-loving left for what they truly are.
