Obama’s secret order to support Libyan rebels.

Posted on March 31, 2011 by Bridget // Foreign Policy, Hillbuzz, White House Policy

Libyan rebels

This story broke yesterday afternoon and it appears to be BIG…although the White House is denying it (of course).  Several government officials let it slip that Obama had signed an order at least 2-3 weeks ago to “support” the anti-Gaddafi rebels.   Wasn’t that before we “publicly” entered into the kinetic-military-action?

( Reuters ) Obama signed the order, known as a presidential “finding”, within the last two or three weeks, according to government sources familiar with the matter.

Such findings are a principal form of presidential directive used to authorize secret operations by the Central Intelligence Agency. This is a necessary legal step before such action can take place but does not mean that it will.

As is common practice for this and all administrations, I am not going to comment on intelligence matters,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement. “I will reiterate what the president said yesterday — no decision has been made about providing arms to the opposition or to any group in Libya.”

The CIA declined comment.

News that Obama had given the authorization surfaced as the President and other U.S. and allied officials spoke openly about the possibility of sending arms supplies to Gaddafi’s opponents, who are fighting better-equipped government forces.

The United States is part of a coalition, with NATO members and some Arab states, which is conducting air strikes on Libyan government forces under a U.N. mandate aimed at protecting civilians opposing Gaddafi.

Interviews by U.S. networks on Tuesday, Obama said the objective was for Gaddafi to “ultimately step down” from power. He spoke of applying “steady pressure, not only militarily but also through these other means” to force Gaddafi out.

Obama said the U.S. had not ruled out providing military hardware to rebels. “It’s fair to say that if we wanted to get weapons into Libya, we probably could. We’re looking at all our options at this point,” he told ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer.

In Washington, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton insisted to reporters that no decision had yet been taken.

U.S. officials monitoring events in Libya say neither Gaddafi’s forces nor the rebels, who have asked the West for heavy weapons, now appear able to make decisive gains.

While U.S. and allied airstrikes have seriously damaged Gaddafi’s military forces and disrupted his chain of command, officials say, rebel forces remain disorganized and unable to take full advantage of western military support.

Hmmm…who are these rebels?

I hope we’re not giving weapons to Al-Qaeda.

Again, you need to seek the facts.

Daffy had the AQ people in prison. The first group were released several years ago. The second group were released just before the protests erupted.

Daffy deliberately released them so that he could claim that AQ was behind the unrest. It is not true.

The NY Slimes had a very good article on the people who seem to be the ones who started the protests. They are lawyers from Zawiyah, just outside of Tripoli.

The lawyer who was the subject of the article is now in Benghazi. There is a definite link to those who had previously attempted a coup against Daffy.

It is very much tied to events in 1995-1996 when 1000 prisoners were killed by Daffy.

Anyways, the people that Daffy is claiming to be AQ are in fact nothing of the kind. This is despite the fact that there are some who have association with AQ who have been involved in the protests.

Remember the protests started out peacefully and Daffy goons started the shooting. Just like in the other M.E. countries the size of the protest got larger and larger.

Read a great blog tonight that put forth a theory:
Remember when Manchelle and the “Won” spent millions of tax-payer dollars to re-decorate the White House that former First Lady Laura Bush JUST redecorated?

      The theory put forth is that re-decoration wasn’t the aim;

Sweeping the “area” for listening devices may have been the purpose. But, then, it might be the purpose of most, new administrations. It’s just that THIS administration might have MORE to HIDE than those in the recent past.

before we get excited on the issue of Al Qaeda which is the meme that shows that Daffy has successfully planted the notion in your heads, I continue to point out that the real leadership is not associated with AQ.

Whilst it is true that there are folk who have gone to Iraq and been a mercenary for AQ, these people are a minority of the rebels.

The rebel army has been rag-tag but the generals who defected have begun to take control and they are moving the “boys” out of the way.

That being said, I do disagree with some of the things being done by Østupid.

The order though, is more concerned with authorizing the CIA to do covert operations inside Libya.

At least the actions of O-Bomb-A now silence the left’s criticism of Bush and Iraq.

Imagine if American arms are found among Islamists or AQ. Calling these guys “freedom fighters” is a real joke–no one in the middle east has our view of freedom, and they won’t for generations. The Muslim Brotherhood is already getting a toe-hold in Egypt, do we really think Islamists won’t in Libya too?

We have special forces and people on the ground in Libya and have had them there for more than a month. THAT I know as fact.

We NEVER send air assault in without ground support. Period. Ever. Obama is playing politics. He is lying to the American people and playing God with our military and he’s putting them and US in harm’s way.

The people I know in the military right now want out of the military and they are lifers. They do NOT support this president and do NOT feel he is acting in the best interest of the country. People I know who would DIE for this country are staying in because they almost feel like they single handedly are protecting us are disgusted and alarmed…and that alarms me.

Yesterday, J.E. Dyer wrote about the perpetual rhetorical circumscriptions of Barack Obama’s foreign policy speeches. As she rightly notes, finding a coherent set of objectives among them that could constitute an “Obama Doctrine” is not an easy task, and in fact it’s easier to describe the Doctrine by what it isn’t than by what it is..

I have no love for Quaddafi (he’s brutal and he’s nuts) but the US foreign policy of “the enemy of my enemy is automatically my friend” must stop!

Any why Libya but not Yemen? or Saudi Arabia? or Jordan? Watch Blackhawk Down if we need to be reminded how badly it goes when we get into the middle of someone’s civil war without the will to really win.

I would say some (not all) have ties to AQ.

        They really are the minority.

The majority of the fighter are from the army units who defected to the rebels.

The men in charge are generals, and the like.

There have been a lot of volunteers, young blokes who have been too eager to fight.

      • Aussie says:
        2011/04/02 at 2:08 am

The reason for Libya has been the fact that Daffy was bombing his own people.

He was sending in his warplanes to Brega, Misrata, Benghazi and other towns. He was bombing them!!

He sent in the tanks to Zawiya; he had snipers in the Tajoura district in Tripoli where people could not leave their homes. They were gunned down if they stepped outside.

The same is happening in Misrata. The snipers had lined up so that anyone trying to enter the hospital was shot.

He has even gunned down ambulances and taken off with the doctors in said vehicles.

that story has not been verified. I am calling that as BS.

I will withdraw the call if I see positive evidence.

The National Transitional Council is not made up of people associated with AQ. I do not think that they would do such a thing.

Also, I am not even sure where those particular items have been located.

On the other hand, Daffy’s tropps laid landmines outside of Adjabiya… at the same time warehouses full of landmines have been discovered in Benghazi and Adjabiya. They are not being given to AQ or to Hizbollah.

Debka is a reliable source of information. Nobody even seems to be talking about the National Transitional Council any more. I’m still waiting for you to cough up some links to your information sources denying links between the rebels and AQ. You remind me of people who like to pretend they know something others don’t but refuse to back it up. They’re usually found in elementary school.

It doesn’t matter if you believe this story or not because the truth doesn’t need your blessing. I need to do what little I can to defend Israel which means I can’t waste any more time on this.

Bahrain expelled the Iranian diplomats because they were caught seeking out the protesters.

The protesters are Shiites. The king of Bahrain is Sunni.

It is possible that Iran is backing the protesters and is now secretly arming Hizbollah to go into Bahrain.

Meanwhile Iran’s ally, Assad in Syria is fighting his own battles.

This is similar to KING obeyme’s illegal action in the last Kenyan presidential election as a sitting US Senator. He supported the challenger, communist ODINGA (a friend of his father and a Orange Democratic Movement member “a terrorist organization), against American alley president Kibahi. Voter and campaign fraud (like here in American during our last election)were alleged and present. In the ensuing chaos, Christians and loyalist were slaughtered by the thousands. KING obeyme got involved with 23 million taxpayer dollars. The result was a brokered power sharing agreement between Kibahi and Odinga in which a Shari Law compliant Constitution was established and abortion was legalized. Sounds somewhat like Libya.
