Now Hiring in Alabama

Posted on October 3, 2011 by Bridget // Domestic Policy, Hillbuzz, Illegal Immigration, White House Policy

The effects of Alabama’s new strict immigration law are starting to be felt.  Since a federal judge upheld many of the laws key parts last week, law enforcement agents will begin enforcing the law this week.  This means that officials can start checking the immigration status of any child enrolled in school.  This has caused a rather large exodus of Hispanic families from the state.  Late last week, schools were reporting Hispanic students mysteriously absent from class.  Some of the families actually came into the school offices to officially withdraw their children from the schools.  This has caused a panic among teachers and businesses that employ Hispanic workers. Alabama has a large agricultural and poultry industry.   I’m interested in which state these families are migrating.  Will they all head in the same direction?  I wouldn’t think it would be Georgia since it also has passed a fairly strict immigration law. Possibly Mississippi or Tennessee?  Will other states follow Alabama’s lead?  The court system will be tied up for years from all the appeals.

So… if this is happening in Alabama, it stands to reason that if the United States enforced the laws that are already on our books then there would be a mass exodus of illegals back to Mexico….but we all know that will never happen because there are too many law makers (on both sides of the aisle) that are very happy to continue to support the illegal market.

So…for all of those people that are part of Alabama’s 10% unemployed,  the Alabama poultry and farming industries are now hiring.

Good for Alabama. I wish my home state of Missouri would pass similar legislation.

Perhaps if we didn't have 20+ million people here illegally, perhaps the unemployment rolls and even the welfare rolls would be much smaller. Plus the burden on many states budgets would be greatly reduced.

Now I wonder if Obama and Holder will raise a stink over the Alabama law like they did the Arizona version?

It is inmoral to keep this people here just because they are cheap workers. These cheap workers are also bringing social problems like gangs(many of their kids), deficits and more people willing to step on the US Constitution.
People who vote Democrat if they get a hold at the US citizenship. Democrats don't care for the Constitution but just power and rights for illegals, atheists, terrorists and lazy asses.
Democrats don't care if this nation becomes a nation of atheists, anti Israel racists or terrorists as long as they are elected.

You're absolutely right – it is immoral to do so. I am often appalled by the statistics of the number of crime committed by illegal. Yes, the liberal response is that the crime were not committed by illegals, then they would have been committed by others. What a load of crap.

        Lombardian and Carmelo –

A while back my husband noticed that when the news here in Phoenix mentions perpetrators of Arizona crimes, the overwhelming majority are hispanic. I didn't believe him and watched myself. He was right. Admittedly, Jerod Laughner was from Tucson, but the average Circle K robbery or hit-and-run or police shooting (more and more frequent, it seems) has a brown face involved, often an illegal.

And what is Frau Napolitano's solution to the problem? A border fence to keep those pesky Canadians out of our country!

That's right – she did say a fence. When she accused a questioner of not using proper logic, I wonder what universe is she from? A case for rigorous border security can easily be made based on the statistics. These numbers cannot be manipulated because you are either legal or illegal. Period. Any of the border states, yours included, can easily argue how much money it would have saved by not having to tackle this issue of illegal immigration. Best wishes to you and stay safe!

what happened in GA, supposedly, was that farms left the food to wither away and die because they couldn't get anyone to harvest. Now, well, when the employers say: no one wants those jobs, the answer is really, no one wants those jobs at the prices we are willing to pay.
The reality is that unless all other states enact similar laws, well, it doesn't pay for the farmers to hire someone for so much more money because in the end, they can't sell the food at a price the supermarkets are willing to pay for it, if they can get the food cheaper in N Carolina or wherever.
Of course, we are part of a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and we pay the farmer at the beginning of the season (usually for 10 weeks or so) and get an abundance of food…the price has been $25 a week for several years. We are also growing our own food (thanks to our son's interest) so I'm learning about what I can freeze and what we can pickle….:)

"This means that officials can start checking the immigration status of any child enrolled in school. "

I live in Alabama. This should read that they are REQUIRED to verify the status.

I've returned to college after a very long break. Last semester, one of my professors gave her take on the subject. In addition to teaching Spanish to college students, she also teaches English as a second language in the elementary schools. She, flat out, said that she would NOT check the status of any of her students. She also admitted to hiring illegal immigrants when she and her husband owned a farm. I was so tempted to ask her if she was just unwilling to pay fair wages to legal workers or if she liked aiding and abetting criminals. I didn't ask. I need the degree and I need it soon. This is also why I'm very careful about challenging my atmospheric science propaganda professor on global warming.

      You're right it is required.

I did see the news report of a guy whining in Cullman that he can't use illegals to pick sweet potatoes. Now why doesn't he just go out and get a small harvester, its not that hard people, use brains they're there for a reason.

I remember my atmospheric science professor at UAH back in summer '02 told us that global warming is one of the largest scams on mankind just to make money.

I don't blame you for not voicing your opinion. But you bring up an excellent question that I would want this professor to answer. She can be all self-righteous if she wants to be, but when the rubber hits the road, no, she won't pay the appropriate wage because she doesn't have to. I would also like to ask her if she is comfortable with violating law. But, your priority is your degree. I can tell you that there are so many ways for someone in her position to realy screw things up for you.

Imagine the scenario taking place in Alabama being replicated in all 50 states. It wouldn't completely solve all of our countries ills, but it would certainly help.

I live in Oklahoma and we have put strict illegal immigration laws into effect. Our employers are required to check for the correct papers. When the law first went into effect it looked like the grapes of wrath here. The interstates were clogged with cars and trucks packed to the brim and heading south and west to Texas.

Just last month our legislature passed a very tough voter ID law requiring picture ID's for all who want to vote. I am thrilled about this because I was getting tired of my vote being cancelled by illegals.

The issue should be ILLIGAL immigration. If we need the workers for our agriculture and poultry industries, then make it easier to get work status to come legally to work. I have never looked into this issue to see what immigrants would have to go through to be here legally but the debate always seems to be how "heartless" conservatives are for opposing ILLEGAL immigration. It also seems to be that once people over stay their work visas, there are no real consequences because the "heartless" conservatives are just mean to want to enforce laws.

I pretty much agree, SG. But with one caveat, put those currently on welfare to work before we instigate any guest worker programs.

I'd also like to see TPTB, search out and fine any business that hires illegals. Having spent 30+ years in the commercial trades, I can tell you its basically impossible to compete with a competitor who hires illegal labor.

Part of the AL law is to pull the business license of any employer found hiring ILLEGALS. I heard a concrete contractor who managed to hang on in spite of illegal competition say his phone has been ringing off the hook the past few days. Now he has a ton of work coming in.

I live in SW FL and attended a town hall meeting of my congressman on Saturday. He represents parts of three counties, which consist mostly of ranches and groves. He said the problem is keeping workers for his constituents but never called them illegals. People in our meeting had to do that. My suggestion was to take all the people on welfare and/or unemployment, put them in the fields and on the ranches to work, and if they didn't want to do that, sucks to be them. As a child I was put in the fields to do whatever was needed and it didn't ruin me for life!
