New York City Ground Report: What are people saying about Obamacare there, how is socialism playing in Manhattan, and how fired up are young people to head out and re-elect Obama next year?
My young friend who is going to graduate school in Manhattan says his friends and acquaintences there are nearly all liberal, they voted for Obama, they still like him, and they think universal health care is a good idea. But they are all so busy with their lives, they rarely think about politics unless it affects them personally. He and his friends are bright, educated young people and they rarely, if ever, discuss politics. They do nearly all consider the Tea Party Group a bunch of ignorant, racist, rednecks. He believes a lot of young people in Manhattan voted for Obama because they were swept up into the movement of electing the first African-American president and because they felt their vote could actually make a difference. My friend feels if the re-election were held tomorrow a lot of them would not bother to vote at all. My friend says the only people who always bring up Obamacare are the middle-aged comedians who work in the clubs. They bring up the subject but never discuss any of the details of the plan or argue against any of the negatives associated with Obamacare. My friend does not think the comedians know anything at all about Obamacare other than its intention to cover all Americans. He has never heard a single one of them discuss rationing or the individual mandate or even the public option. My friend says he has noticed an increase in those people who stand on sidewalks and try to recruit people into socialism; however, he says he doesn’t feel they are having a lot of success. His personal feeling is that people in Manhattan may be overwhelmingly liberal but New York City is the epitome of capitalism and he doesn’t expect that to change in his lifetime.
