Mystery of the Day: What is Kevin Smith's "political horror film" Red State about?

Posted on March 24, 2010 by HillBuzz // Hillbuzz

Kevin Smith is best known for being denied passage on Southwest Airlines because they said he was too fat. We swear that's not a joke.

Here’s a project we’ve been tracking for a while, because the concept of a “political horror” film really intrigues us:  Kevin Smith has been given the green light to shoot “Red State”, which is billed as “political horror” based on the Reverend Fred Phelps.

“Political Horror” is a new genre…unless you see “The Omen” as a political movie as much as a horror one, the way we do.  The last scene of “The Omen” has the anti-christ holding hands with the President and First Lady, about to be adopted into the White House, setting course in the eternal sea of politics.

We’re not fans of Kevin Smith by any means.  There are moments in Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back that are inspired and funny, but we enjoy watching his movies the way we enjoy most Broadway musicals — as little clips shown here and there at Sidetracks on Showtunes or comedy nights.  Smith should direct short skits and digital shorts, not movies.

As for Fred Phelps, most people conveniently forget he’s a Democrat.

We’ve seen the man in person, screaming at gay guys to get AIDS and telling people he doesn’t even know how much he hates them.  Honestly, there aren’t even words to tell you how despicable watching that was.  “Stomach-turning” doesn’t come close; “repulsive” doesn’t do it justice.  It is the LEFT, not the RIGHT, that wishes AIDS on gay people it doesn’t like.  We can testify to that from personal experience.  The worst, to this day, that any Republican in any red state has ever done to us is say, “Boys, you ain’t right, and I’m gonna pray for y’all”.

But, that would be a pretty boring horror movie…nice people who think we’re broken and keep praying God will fix us, whether we want to be “fixed” or not.  We think it’s naive of them to do this — but very sweet — and know those prayers aren’t coming from a place of hate, no matter how much they can’t understand our affections for Jake Gyllenhaal.

Fred Phelps has always reminded us of the crazy preacher in Poltergeist II or some kind of a scarecrow monster from a bad B-movie.

He is chilling to watch in person.

We wonder exactly what Smith’s movie will be about…and how it’s “political horror”.

Chances are, it will have a bunch of Liberals traveling through the South, stumbling upon Phelps’ hate cult, and falling victim to all manner of horrors.

It’s a shame Republicans don’t make movies, too, because the current administration sure feels like a needless remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, where America seems to have gone insane, with Leftists replacing everyone in government who once upon a time acted with common sense.

Have you heard anything about the movie “Red State”?

If you were making a “political horror movie”, what would be in it?

Fred Phelps is an obvious left-wing person. The LSM make him look right wing, but the way he and his cult behave they are similar to that moonbat Cindy Sheehan.

      Good catch, Oz!

“The Democratic tent includes the Rev. Fred Phelps Sr., the state’s best known anti-gay advocate. Phelps is a registered Democrat who ran unsuccessfully for the party’s gubernatorial nomination in 1990, 1994 and 1998 and for the U.S. Senate in 1992.”

I have NEVER liked the Phelps clan, and it is just too convenient that the country is mostly center-right and faith-based that the left can claim Phelps is a right-wing nut. He is FAR from that, and I personally abhor this family for, if no other reason, thanking their “god” for IEDs for killing American military men and women. There’s just something so wrong about that.

And yes, I can picture Phelps walking up my driveway in a spot-focused rain singing “God is innnn his holy temmmmPUHL!”

Geez, that movie still scares me – as does that monster himself, Fred Phelps.

Who needs to make a “political horror movie”? We have been living one for the last year and a half, with lead stars Dr Utopia and Nancy Pelosi, special guest stars Joe Biden and Michelle O, and with cops who act stupidly filling in as extras.

Seriously…back in the golden oldie days of, say, 2006, could you have made up the events that we have seen transpire?

Who needs movies, reality TV, soap operas or dramas when you have the US government to watch every day? I predict the comeback of the sitcom, because we need a reason to laugh these days.

Most probably won’t believe it but my mom predicted it in the 80s.

She watched the political landscape then and saw the writing on the wall. Even knew Ayers would be tied them.

She would say how capitalism is the best system in the world because it inspires innovation in it’s people while communism even socialism kills competition and the desire to succeed.

She warned how revolutions hardly ever went well for the people so it was important to preserve the Constitution for ourselves and future generations.

Like most moms she was a force of nature.

She saw the nanny state coming, and even before the wall came down, would say that as the USSR became more free….we would lose our freedoms and become more like them.

Unfortunately, the way the entertainment business works is that conservative-oriented projects have a tough time getting funding, so the public winds up being force-fed one political viewpoint. This is not by accident. While boycotting films sends a message, it also has a serious side effect: It puts thousands of people not directly tied to the movie industry out of work, i.e., caterers, bakers, meat cutters, Starbucks barristas, coffee shops and fast-food joints, truck drivers, dry cleaners, florists, massage therapists (yes, massage therapists) and other small businesses that rely on the film industry to keep themselves –as well as the local economy — afloat. One thing for sure, whatever kind of film Kevin Smith rolls out likely won’t be conservative or anything Hillbuzz fans will find to their liking. That boy’s just not right.

The production budget: $100 million dollars. Utter failure.

For the benefit of all, I’d like to make something clear:

I am hardcore right-wing. Rush. Levin. Hot Air. Powerline. They speak for me.

And I have never argued, nor will I ever argue, that there is anything wrong with gay people.

I don’t think judges should force the country to change its definition of marriage; that decision is for the individual states to make for themselves.

Nor do I think the federal government has any business passing crap like the Defense of Marriage Act.

Other than forbidding polygamy (do I really need to say why?), I don’t think the federal government has any business regulating marriage.

Personally I am pro-gay, but I think the government should be neither pro- nor anti-gay.

The government should be stripped down as much as possible, leaving us free to live our lives as we see fit.

    I believe in federalism.

I believe federalism is the essence of American conservatism.

I believe federalism is the protector of individual liberty.

I hope Gov. Palin, Rep. Bachmann, and other conservative leaders are reading HillBuzz, because HillBuzz shows that conservatism is truly representative of *all* Americans, and is the *only* movement that can reverse the decades of statism that have finally, inevitably culminated in the Obama presidency.

PS I think Fred Phelps is the biggest self-hating closet case that ever walked the earth.

It is his right, however, to be as vile as he is.

What never gets said is that Phelps is obviously seriously mentally ill. He’s not just biased or bigoted. He’s not just whacky or eccentric. He’s truly got something terribly wrong going on inside of his skull.

No one could spend their lives spreading such global hate and misery and not have a screw loose. He’s a f’ng hardware store of crazy.

I think that he’s a sociopath. If you look at the criteria, he fits them all.

Whether or not he’s a sociopath I don’t know. “Bizarre” is I think the best word for Fred Phelps.

Did you ever see that documentary “The Most Hated Family In America” about his family? Last I checked, it was still on YouTube. By the title, “Red State,” it sounds to me like the boogey-man in the horror flick, Fred Phelps, will be portrayed as a conservative and most likely as an example of the typical conservative. It doesn’t matter that conservatives as well as Baptist institutions reject and condemn Phelps because that kind of truth won’t help feed the irrational hatred of conservatives that liberals harbor and nurture.

It’s too bad that Smith has decided to jump on Hollyweird’s Let’s Hate Middle America bandwagon because, as much as I may have enjoyed them, I’ll no longer watch, much less purchase, any film that he’s involved with at any level.

I agree; It’s already a political horror movie. It’s somewhere along the lines of “Invasion Of The Body Snatchers” where the bodies of Democrats have been taken over by some aliens but the Democrats look normal. Of else it has elements of those Star Trek episodes with “The Borg”. In fact, you could do something with the
Obama as the leader of Democrat zombies who want to destroy and consume your flesh. It could be a political horror fest pastiche.

Perhaps Mr. Smith along with Michael Moore are vying for the privilege of being the modern day equivalent of Lina Wertmueller for Obama the dictator wanna be.

There are plenty of conservatives in the entertainment industry. And between all of them they have enough money to set up their own studio to create films that people would look forward to taking their chilren. They would make quite a return on their investment.

        James Woods,
        Patricia Heaton
        Tom Selleck
        Drew Carey
        Kurt Russel
        John Larroquette
        Chuck Norris
        Gerald McRaney
        Kelsey Grammer
        Delta Burke
        Robert Duvall
        Curt Cameron
        Dennis Quaid
        Jon Voight
        Susan Lucci

        And then other type celebs:

        Ted Nugent
        Joan Rivers
        The Judds
        Troy Aikman
        John Elway
        Richard Petty
        Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
        Jackie Mason
        Trace Adkins
        Jack Nicklaus
        Kid Rock
        Don King
        Donald Trump

Although there are rays of hope emerging, for the majority of the US, it’s ALL left, ALL the time.

The U.S. public marinates in the left’s pervasive, sour, one-dimensional political perspective.

This is why we need to support and share sites like this one!

There has also been a big infiltration by the British BBC…Discover, TLC, History Channel, Animal Planet, etc. are infested with BBC producers and influence and they were the ones driving the global warming scam. This has been going on for years.

Hollywood is becoming a propaganda machine for the progressives.

I don’t think Tom Hanks coming out with his “Americans are racist” promotion was any spontaneous moment. It was timed to coincide with the signing of this bill and the STAGED “alledged: incidents at the tea party. Ron Howard is in Washington DC lobbying congress more than he is in Hollywood. He does films to attract “normal families” (his new show on NBC) and injects socialist views purposely, deliberately, and it is scary to me. This is what HITLER did for heaven’s sake. This is what socialist governments do to takeover COUNTRIES. This is KGB 101.

It will only work if the ONLY choices are propaganda. With the explosion of the Internet, there is no way that the leftists can possibly reach every outlet anymore. The “captive audience” of yesterday simply doesn’t exist like it used to.

If the hate-mongering media don’t make money – and they are currently bleeding capital like a stuck pig – then they can’t continue to survive. They’ll eventually cease to exist, because at their core movie studios and newspapers are BUSINESSES…

Don’t forget Dr. U and his internet Czar are currently working to pass the “Net Neutrality” bill. The goal: obama to make internet access a government entitlement program like health care. Getting really creepy kids. He wants to control what we see on the internet. Discussion groups like this may soon be a thing of the past.

Do not forget…he just signed an executive order to revamp the STATE OF EMERGENCY rules which would give the government in the time of an “emergency” full control of media access. He is revamping what constitutes an “emergency”. He also is revamping martial law rules. He did this in January.

I just cancelled my subscription to consumer reports. I have been getting emals about how good the health care “reform” is.

They have just lost credibility with me and others that subscribe. That’s a LOT of money they won’t be receiving. I told them in my little note that they should have learned something from the AARP debacle. Old people were out in droves burning their AARP cards like it was 1968!

We have to treat Hollywood like we did the French wine and cheese industries. Boycott. Cut off their source of income and “starve the beast.” If you remember, the growers, bottlers, truckers, farmers shut down Paris with one of their 3 day strikes demanding a change in policy. Shortly after, the public elected Sarkosy, a professed friend of America.

Money turns the world around and if we don’t give it to them, they can’t brainwash our kids and those who catch the first 5 minutes of the news and then watch cartoons.

Where did THIS come from? Aside from kind of being off point, it it hinges on useless circular logic that no one here would resort to.

I think the (well-made, very obvious) point to the post was that people try to pass off Phelps’ hate and vile spewings as the province of Republicans… (as if that kind of drama-filled, theater of bile is in any way “conservative”.)

The post is saying, “Hey, guess what — one of the people you most point to as a Republican Conservative hate monger is neither Republican nor a Conservative… so check your own camp before pointing at other people’s rats.”

No one was lumping all the Democrats in with Phelps (the way, oddly enough, most liberals try to lump Republicans in with him…)

If you want to pose some kind of challenge to the Boyz and all of us, try harder.

But I think you understood the post. I think you just wanted to have a hissy fit. And you are free to act like an idiot, as is your right, just like any other troll.

But should I assume that means you are on par with Fred Phelps?

Get back to me on that.

My horror movie would be about someone taking a shower in the congressional gym locker room and as he tries to adjust the water temperature he looks up and sees that the shower head is actually Barney Frank slobbering down upon him. The showering man screams and runs to his locker opens it and finds Ted Kennedy in there asking him if he’d like to go for a drive. Gives me the creeps just thinking about it.

I got that letter too. I sent more money to help him make sure that he’s re-elected in 2011 or 12…I can’t remember. He only gets to run out Kennedy’s time and then he has to run again.

We’ll have to do a money bomb for him so that he stays fresh in the Massachusetts voters’ minds. I’m sure they will start running vicious ads against him. There’s a bottomless well of money in their coffers. Maybe it’s coming from the stimulus funds. Anyway, they will try to bring his numbers down and they have to do it soon because to know him is to love him, as we all know.

The long-running TV show, “ER” goes off the air.
Noah Wyle evaporates into thin air.
In short order Rachel Madcow appears.
      Coincidence?
      I think not.

For removal of all doubt, see Wyle’s Wikipedia photo.

Being from Kansas I am well aware of Fred Phelps. Phelps church is really a cult made up of mostly family and extended family members. I don’t think there is more than seventy-five or so of these people. They represent nothing but themselves. They are indicative of nothing but themselves. To say otherwise would be to say Jim Jones was indicative of all urban community organizers.

I have been seeing reports of hate crimes, death threats & spitting at Senators during all the the Health Care Take over. I also see there has been suggestion that it was NOT a Tea Party Protester, but rather, a ‘PLANT’ by the Dem’s to make the tea Partiers look bad…same with the threats on Senators who voted. Could Obama & his henchmen actually use this tactic to ‘try’ to discredit the growing opposition? How can we publicize this? I think it is very likely the Dems trying to make us look bad. Notice, no arrests etc…just publicity saying how bad we are.
