Milton Friedman On Freedom And Equality
Now that we will be forced to live through four more years of the “social justice” dictatorship, I want to remind everyone that the ideas that these marxists regurgitate are not new ones. In this wonderful video from the 70′s, Milton Friedman points out that you can’t have equality first and freedom last. You have to be have liberty first.
This video couldn’t be more pertinent today.

…once again, I fear that Kevin has been forced to go into hiding ‘blogwise’….
So Tamminator, can you give us an estimate for Kevin’s return?
He posted the open thread and explained it there, Nick.
Tamminator, I feel like a nimrod asking this, but was it the most recent Open Thread, or one a little earlier?
Many thanks.
Oops. I missed it. That’s Robert posting. Suffice it to say that Kevin is fine, and I know he’s working on a huge project. I’ve been working myself, and I’m freelance so I’ve got to take it when I get it.
I’m glad I was working. Took my mind off last week’s outcome.
And don’t ask me why this breitbart gravatar shows up. I deleted it from my gravatar cache and it keeps following me. Andrew, are you trying to tell me something?
I fixed it. I guess Andrew WAS still hanging out on my gravatar page. Now you know. I am such a dumb dumb sometimes.
That smelly hippie questioning Friedman is no doubt one of the Founding Fathers of OWS.
I envision an addition to the iconic “Ascent of Man” with fools like this followed by the even dirtier, smellier and more ignorant OWS types of today.
I love how Friedman channels Ben Franklin as he talks about equality over liberty. Although Franklin was talking about security, they are two sides of the same coin.
In a related matter, read this quote from Ace of Spades this morning. One of the better descriptions of O: “He’s like a Tasmanian Devil of economic misery.”
Ha! Funny quote. Thanks, Bob.
And how did Bugs Bunny often beat the Tasmanian Devil? By using his wits, words, and sometimes a clever disguise to trick the T.D. into defeating himself. All while making us laugh along the way. We need to do the same to Obama.
Hey, Tim, you just summed up what I love about Hillbuzz! Wits, words, and laughing along the way. We WILL all survive this!
That Tasmanian Devil . . . what a maroon!
Great video! I am going to have to post this one on my FB page. Thanks for the link Tamminator.
You’re very welcome, Zmama! I would suggest watching all of Friedman’s work. http://www.freetochoose.tv/
I wish we had someone like him around today.
I like Thomas Sowell also and he writes a column or two almost every week.
I love Sowell. I’m thinking of re-reading “Basic Economics” to prepare for the worst. I with Sowell would make more public appearances or hold town halls like Friedman did. Video tape them and educate the masses.
I had posted I think 17 Friedman videos on my blog under the title “Friday Friedman.” I was sorry when the series ran out.
Thank you so much for that website. All I know about economics I learned from Milton Friedman. Elementary Education majors never got econ in college. This was a great course for dummies such as I. It was such an education being on my own and I watched many friends get into horrific credit card debt after getting out of school. They drove nicer, newer cars than I did and bought clothes like there was no tomorrow, but I slept at night and didn’t have to go home and live with my parents. And when the time came, I could buy my own house.
Sounds like you’re no dummy!
I’m a big fan of David Horowitz. This video made me think of Horowitz’ famous encounter with the Muslim female college student.
Different subject matter but taking a stand for liberty nonetheless.
I remember that one, he was brilliant.
Yes. The utter hatred in the hearts of Muslims and the utter stupidity of leftists is easily exposed by anyone who dares to try.
“When you aim for equality before liberty, you have a and b decide what c shall do for d, except they take a little commission along the way.” How true. We are seeing it happen before our eyes.
The media is a or b, take your choice. My proof is anecdotal. The day after the election I was at the gym looking at talking heads while working out. Erin Burnett of CNN, normally of dour visage, was smiling with a flushed face. It looked like she finally got laid. I guess an election result is what it took.
Speaking of getting laid, the stock footage of Petraus is funny, with his goofy haircut and leathered skin. Put a small sack on his head and he’s a ringer for Ray Bolger’s scarecrow frim Oz. Oh, if he only had a brain in his head, the big one that is.
SNL “Weekend Update” opened with Obama winning re-election due to his “popularity with the unemployed, and college students.”
IOW – entertainment and popular culture making Obama and his bots no longer “cool” is our only hope. AND our only way to cope, at least for now.
SNL should be ignored. All of popular culture should be gnored like a spoiled child trying to get attention by misbehaving.
Tamminator, this is a college discussion along the same lines, but with Dinesh D’Souza. He explains our current situation (similar to what Friedman was discussing) beautifully. Do you think he got through to these students?
http://www.youtube.com/embed/rEM4NKXK-iA
OMGosh! layla, this is a great clip—-D’souza is brilliant.
I Obama had any intellect at all he would think like Dinesh D”Sousa and not like his dead beat polygamist fahter who was a miserable druck and killed himself and another person in one of his many drunken driving accidents. D’Sousa admitted that his father was anti-Iperialist because of what the British did in his country but also admitted that he was also anti- white. Obama likes that about his terrible father. The greatest evidence for me to validate that Obama was a dangerous man was the two men that he decided to venerate in his own books. Rev. Right and his dead beat polygamist murderous father! Obama is a dangerous radical and D’Sousa puts forth all the psycological reasons for Obama’s anger and derangement.
Wow! This was very enlightening. Thanks for sharing. I doubt that the explanation changed many of these skulls full of mush.
As I watched this film, my heart sagged a little because I realized the audience was (as I gathered from the giggles and applause) in agreement Friedman. I don’t imagine many university crowds today would applaud Friedman’s words and would rather, be giving a standing O(bama)vation to the dirty hippy and his weak case for “equality.”
This reality saddens me. Is there any way to reach the younger vote?
Hey, they booed Madonna after a pro-Obama rant. Yes, there is hope.
Good point Brook! I feel cheered already. On a recent Red Eye, one of the female guests (don’t remember the name) mentioned that more “hip” conservatives like Greg Gutfield need to do campus comedy tours and spread the message that conservatism isn’t about being square but is about freedom and liberty. So many youngsters voted for Obama because it was the hip thing to do. Lame. Conservatism is the new cool. Spread it like wildfire.
I saw the same Red Eye, and thought it a great idea. Also Andy Levy would be great on the college circuit. I recall on one Red Eye they showed a clip of Greg, Andy, and Bill Schultz(sp.?) on the road somewhere – great chemistry.
Andy Levy is pro-muslim and anti-Israel. I don’t think he should be on the circuit representing conservatives. Now Gutfeld is a hoot! I have been reading his books lately, and my hubby wonders why I keep laughing out loud at my Kindle.
Is it just me, or does everyone find it kinda creepy that a 54 year old woman keeps trying to take her clothes off on stage? I know she’s in good shape and still sells tickets and has an ego. But she REALLY needs to get over herself.
One posted on Breitbart yesterday and said: Don’t give up on us yet. I see more and more of my friends getting married..then looking at how much their taxes are all around…and changing to conservatives.
Sadly, for them, the process of becoming conservative will go much faster come January 1, 2013.
Tamminator, found this series at AS, I have read I Pencil before, now there is a video, good stuff
http://spectator.org/blog/2012/11/15/i-pencili-simply-perfect
Thanks, Indy! I’ll take a look.
Beck’s show from yesterday covered the Weimar Republic and compares it to today, scary stuff.
http://www.theblaze.com/stories/glenn-beck-lays-out-the-startling-similarities-between-present-day-america-and-the-weimar-republic/
One of the things I love about this video – other than Friedman’s brilliant response – is the idiot asking the question, trying to phrase it in a way that he thinks makes him sound oh-so-intellectual but in my mind reveals that he is an idiot who has a foregone conclusion in mind, thinks he is just so clever and that he thinks he is smart enough to stump Milton Friedman. i couldn’t stand guys like this in college, and I can’t stand them today. And how stupid is it that they are still asking the same stupid questions the same stupid way.
It’s so classic! He asks as if he’s the first to have thought up such a question…
I see that he was working hard to not sound like a communist. He didn’t want to say marxism has the appeal that everyone is “equal.” Of course that’s what marxism is all about. It doesn’t take motivation into consideration except that it believes that everyone’s drive for equal outcome would be so high that no one would resent having to pull harder for the same pay.
He also makes the comment something to the effect that success is too “hard” for some people, so it is only “fair” that money be taken from the successful and given to those who think it’s too “hard” to become successful. I bet that guy is a college professor today. Or a journalist…
OK is it my imagination or is everyone kind of bummed Obama was re-elected…I mean everybody, including the people who voted for him?
I think they thought surely he would not be re-elected, or maybe they thought more people were truly for him than actually were.
For example, my coworker who was excited the president could pass “Obamacare” now that he’s been re-elected, was bummed when me and another coworker said Obamacare was passed in 2010. The bot coworker went on a break right then and there for about 30 minutes, disappeared on us. He came back with a sandwich.
Later our young coworker said “maybe presidents should just be elected to 8-year terms, because the first term is just wasted because they have to get re-elected.”
You could see the light starting to go on inside his head. But it took Obama getting re-elected, and all his “enemies” disappearing, for our young coworker’s brain to be open to anything other than defending That Won.
Leftists Americans never have the courage of their convictions. Not a one of them could survive in a truely socialist or communist, or Islamic state. They think Europe is socialist but they are only partially socialist. NAZI Germany and Facist Italy and Spain were truly socialist. It is easy to declare yourself a socialist (as so many NY Obama zombies do) while you are fully benefiting from capitolism and not paying nearly what real socialist pay. Leftist only study theory but never have to put their leftist ideas into practise because they are not doers, just contemplators. I was brain washed to believe that right wingers are stupid. It was a lie that was easy to beleive because the Progressive Bush Cartel destroyed the credibility of the republican party during mosst of my adult years. But now that I know some true conservatives I have found them to be very well read and well informed. They have practical knowledge that comes from having to put theroy into practise.
They understand the laws of nature and natures God.
The democrats are pushing the legalization of marajuana so that more foolish hippies like this one can be manipulated into believing leftist lies and nonsensical theories (post modern) of econmics. I cannot support Libertarians because I know that their defence of legalized pot would have the unintended consequence of more confused young stoners who will remain on the democrat plantation after their drug activity makes them lazy minded and stupid and unable to compeat in a free market economy.
CA now has a super majority of Dems that can do what they want. they will legalize it, because they are desperate for money.
It’s interesting too, because if you talk to law enforcement people and medical people in areas where they legalized “medical marijuana” they say it has created all kinds of really bad problems. I understand the libertarian attitude about legalizing drugs, because the flip side of it for them is “but don’t expect me to pay for your rehab, etc.” They say that it would save so much money that is currently spent fighting the “drug wars” (which really are a joke) but then it creates all sorts of other social problems. I agree with the libertarian notion of freedom and personal responsibility – even if you choose to exercise that freedom irresponsibly, but the whole “freedom to do all the drugs you want” just doesn’t make sense to me. There will always be a cost to that kind of nonsense.
Well, alcohol is legal, and having come from a family of alcoholics, I personally feel booze is more damaging than marijuana, by far. We went through a period of prohibition with alcohol, and people still managed to get their hands on it. The public money wasted on preventing, policing and incarcerating pot smokers is out of control.
While I have voted for them in every election since I was 18, the problem I have with the Republican Party, is that they claim to be all for freedom and smaller government, except when it comes to the stuff they don’t like. That just makes it easy for Leftists to call them hypocrites. I truly believe that if we are going to make any headway in the next few elections, we need to stay focused on the bigger picture: economy, national security, and liberty.
I agree that booze is legal and alcoholism ruins lives and families. I am married to an alcoholic, so I really do understand this problem firsthand.
HOWEVER, I knew a lot of promising young people who got into smoking pot in high school and I swear, fried their brains. They never amounted to anything, being so hooked on pot that they were completely focused on getting their next joint. I know that alcohol fries one’s liver, but pot fries your brain. I also know that there are a lot of homeless people who are so hooked on alcohol that they cannot function in the real world. But I know a LOT of alcoholics who are perfectly capable of holding down jobs, controlling their drinking during the day but bingeing at night, and live to ripe old ages. Now if only they didn’t drive while drunk…
But I know very few successful adults who still think (after the age of 25) that they can sit around and get high on pot night after night and still function.
Interesting. I am from NY vacationing in CA this week and overheard two women talking as they were walking on the beach. The one said to the other, “now with a democrat majority inthe assembly, our taxes are going to triple.” I am not familiar with CA politics so now your post and her comments make perfect sense.
I don’t think Californians have any clues about what they have done to themselves…
That dumb hippie just took over America. I say we retreat from politics – where the carnage of our bloody liberty lies – and redirect a full frontal assault on pop media because if we win that, we win the political debate.
Every young conservative should flee the political arena and get into film, television and music, pronto.
Leftist suceed in undoing conservative Christian candidates by mocking them. If only true conservatives did the same to leftist air heads like this one in the video, we could shift American culture back to a culture of refinement and class.
No hope of “refinement and class” Mimi. Have you been to a decent restaurant lately? People act and dress like pigs.
Romney had his faults but he was refinement and class personified. One of the stunning rebukes that harsh reality slapped conservatives with is that half of their fellow Americans – their neighbors- confirmed the disrespectful, contemptuous and belittling way their president and v. president treated Romney/Ryan (who represent almost half of the voting public) during the debates.
I wish up scale resturants would go back to insisting on Jackets and proper attire. An upscale restauant in Philly that I love because of it’s old world charm, relaxed it’s Jacket policy right after the Soros market manipulation in 2008. The owner said it was a tough decision but it was difficult to get younger people to dress appropriately and that they needed their business. American have become so lazy and classless it is no wonder a gangsta’ like Obama is our president.
If you want to enjoy what is left of refined culture may I suggest classical music concerts and Opera. There are many more conservatives in the high arts and because sacred srt is very imporatnt and respected in classical music it stil pocesses a level of refined dignity.
I live in reality, Mimi. I don’t hope for the “good old days”. If you seriously think this country is going back to jackets then you are deluded. Sure, it would be wonderful, but I live in Real Ville. And if you think that classical artists are conservative, then you are REALLY living in fantasy land. I am an artist, and 90% of “artists”, whether it be music, theater or any other form of art, are LEFTISTS.
Mimi, do you actually ATTEND the opera and the symphony? How about live professional theatre? I am in agreement with you that I miss the days when people knew how to dress appropriately for a special night. And I think it’s pretty special when one spends $300 to go to see a live stage play or musical, or goes to the symphony or an opera. But these days the people around you are all dressed in blue jeans or yoga pants with running shoes, texting God knows who on their cellphones throughout the performance, and eating popcorn, nacos, cokes, wine, etc, in the house during the performance!
I still dress up to go to these places, but I am definitely in the minority. And I’m not talking about evening wear, I wear what I would wear to church or to work (in a professional office environment). At a recent theatrical performance, some idiot sitting behind me spilled a 32 oz Coca Cola all over me when he stood up for intermission, because he “forgot” he had the coke in his hand. Didn’t even apologize. But I (after spending $300 for tickets) got to sit in wet, sticky clothes for the second half of the show. Delightful.
Of course, I blame the coarsening of our culture and the laziness we as Americans demonstrate. There has been a definite and rapid downslide in the past 25 years.
That said, as much as I enjoy dressing up and going to a nice restaurant for dinner, my husband refuses to wear a jacket and tie so we can go to places that require one.
Reply to Tamm: I know a lot of people in the arts, and you are absolutely correct, they are almost entirely lefties. They think if we have Republicans in charge, all of the funding for the arts will disappear (as it should). I try to point out that the PRIVATE funding will still be there, and will likely increase, but they are so convinced that without Federal funds they will cease to exist. Personally, I think “arts” that cannot support themselves with ticket sales, private donations or private sales are probably not good enough to exist in the first place. But “artists” don’t like to admit that. They prefer to be supported by Federal grants so they can continue to create crap that would never be marketable and not have to work at real jobs.
Don’t tell Kevin but Drudge is at it again – pic of O right in the middle of stories about “GOP governers go soft on taxes,” Pentagon spends $1.5 million to develop new beef jerky”, “Flasher runs away after woman whips out gun”, “Human waste continues to pur into NY harbor after Sandy” and “Public health proposal mulls mandatory ‘Smoker’s license’” – gee it’s almost like Drudge is trying to tell us something…
Did you notice that the human waste story was in the same box as a photo of O’Liar visiting New York?
Ever since Kevin mentioned these unusual associations of picture and headlines, I’ve been paying attention. The human waste story did not escape my attention because of its proximity to bo’s picture.
Don’t see a link for it yet, but just heard on Sykes’ show that the number of states refusing to implement the president’s healthcare plan is now at 27, including Wisconsin.
Well, that leaves three GOP governors to go. Maybe they are the three new ones we just ppicked up and they haven’t been sworn in yet.
If all of these governors stick to their guns, they can collapse Obamacare.
The latest I’ve found online regarding Oklahoma is that Gov. Fallin is still delaying making a decision. Has anyone heard anything different? 56Survivor, didn’t you say a while back that you’re in Oklahoma? Can you shed some light? Thanks in advance.
Fallin delayed her announcement since admin extended deadline. I have concerns because she first accepted the feds obamacare $—then returned them under pressure—- hope she holds firm.
Can you educate me on how this collapses Obamacare?
Edwin Meese and Mark Levin discuss what this election means for constitutional government

Time for the old GOP to step aside and allow our strong bench to take the lead.
In Scott Prices article “Romney’s Gifts Remark Ignores His Own Fatal Flaw” on Real Clear Politics, Price talks about an awkward Romney who has a hard time relating to young people using out of date references and language. A few examples are shouting “who Let the Dogs out?” and “you’ve got some bling bling there too.
On the stump Romey
continued…
On the stump Romney frequently began declarative sentences with the work “why” and how long he’s been going “steady” with his “high school sweetheart”
Hw goe’s on to make many points. A few I can agree with, many I don’t. But my mqin point is writing this, I am so sad about that man not being our president. It’s exactly those things that were more than endearing. They are comforting. A man who clearly had all of the skill and knowledge to run the country. All the integrity he needed to be a trustworthy. And the kindness to try and reach down to out little levels even if it dorkified himself.
I love the man who didn’t try and pretend to be us. He just jad to be himself. I had hoped he would usher in a new era, one we’ve seen before and desperstly need. I love this man and I am more than sad that he won’t be our president.
Following his campaign has taught me alot about him. But it had mostly taught me who I want to be. Judi
I would like to call for more reporting on Barak Obama’s bath house activities. I think the High ranking combat military officails who Obama purged need to know that Obama has secrets too and that he should be exposed just as they were.
Can Hillbuzz do anything to help Dr. Barbara Bellar? She is the doctor who made the anti-Obamacare Youtube video which went viral. She also ran unsucessfully for State Senate in IL. She just recently was fired by her hospitol and she believes it was because of her political views and her highly viewed video. Dr. Barabara Bellar was on Gretta tonight and she said that the republican party lost their spine and should stand strong for traditional conservative values. I agree with Dr. Bellar and woold like to help her affect positive change in America.
Mimi, I think it would be great if you would write a letter to her former employer. Also, comments on many blogs could help inform people who do not know about her. You could write a form or example letter with a name and address for other people to follow and post them as well.
Some of my friends on facebook get angry at my questioning posts of the problem of Obamacare. I’m critical of things even when I agree with them. It’s my nature.
One suggested I just support the president regardless of party and not root for Obamacare to fail. I told him I’m not rooting for failure, I’m trying to see how it will succeed. Nothing about Obamacare can.
Obamacare is a cancer growing on the leftists.
They are desperate as the 2014 senate elections are looking to be absolute murder for the democrats. The republicans have 13 seats up and 12 are safe. The 13th will only be in danger if the Maine republican senator were to step down.
The democrats have 20 up for grabs and ten of those are in red or swing states. Their Alaska senate seat is toast. No way they’ll get that one. A bucket with “Republican” written on it would beat their democratic senator there.
So that’s one guaranteed for republicans.
The next are in southern states and those are blue dog democrats who constituencies watch Fox News and are PISSED.
Reid is struggling to get the votes to reduce the power of the filibuster. The old “bull” democrats don’t agree at all, plus it’s looking clearer and clearer that 2014 will be the final deathblow to the “blue dog” democrats and some still have hope of getting their constituencies to forgive them for voting for Obamacare.
If they go with the nuclear option, they’ll have no chance and they know it. Reid wants them to give up their jobs for the good of the party, they don’t want to do that.
Reid, after all, had promised back in 2009 that they could get away with voting for Obamacare because their voters would have forgotten by now. He was wrong. Their voters are as angry as ever.
With all the legal battles (state-run exchanges versus fed-run, the originator clause ect.) Obamacare is going to be on people’s minds well into 2014.
Plus, the gaping holes in Obamacare on the state-run vs. fed-run is exposing yet another critical flaw in its implementation. Until that is settled in the supreme court, states are opting to go with the “fed-run” option since if the Supreme Court agrees with the OK lawsuit all fed-run states will have a superior financial advantage.
Blue states would have no choice but to cry foul or watch companies flock to “fed-run” exchange states.
Obama’s administration is pushing the deadline back to think of a work around to get around this and convince states to to go with the state-run exchanges. That will be hard now that states have figured out about the potential benefits of the “fed-run” option.
This means they need to pack the court with Leftist judges to protect Obamacare, but with the filibuster that will be hard to get truly biased judges since the GOP will filibuster the hell out of Obama’s choices.
With so many delays and problems, the GOP and states are looking to push Obamacare past 2014 to where their chance of winning the Senate is looking fantastic.
Don’t give up hope. Just eat up the clock.
ACA is killing jobs. Just look at all the layoffs since the election. The unintended consequences of the bill will turn the country into a nation of part-time workers. This is the message for 2014 — Obamacare is killing jobs. Keep repeating this, posting it everywhere you post. Obama killed the Twinkie!!!!
So, the dumbass moonbat says that he agrees with Freidman’s definition of freedom, namely, “freedom from coersion,”
But then he goes on to support a “freedom of well being,” … with all the attendant marxist wish list of goodies.
So he lied.
As all marxists do.
And dip shit commie toad had to resort to his notes … and Milton spoke from knowledge without any need of such.
Any questions?
Don’t miss the Mark Steyn editorial at National Review Online (as well as in other publications). And don’t miss the too terribly a propos comments of Monsieur Voltaire immediately below.

Article on Sarah Palin and it mentions you Kevin
Re California legislature now 100% Democratic majority. This year, those of us living in a rural rea, got stuck with an additional yearly fire prevention fee, over and above the fire prevention we pay in yearly taxes, of $150 per year. Just yesterday I heard Ted Lu(sp?) is proposing a bill to raise our car registration by three times the fee presently charged…if you have a new car, this could make yearly registration around $900 to $l,000. If you have three clunkers (like me) to register all three per year will cost around $900. So it begins!
I am so sorry for the conservatives like you that live in California!! Just the registeration of the vehicles, alone seems very high…and yeah, I have an older car, too. Don’t see it getting better for a little bit…..for you with the Dem’s super majority.
Next they’ll outlaw our ‘clunkers’.
Why haven’t there been any comments since 12:36 this morning?
Because Kevin is working and so am I. We are not at your beck and call, Mimi. Comments on this site have to be approved, and if we are not around, no one gets approved.
And I don’t mean to seem snotty, but that’s the way this site works.
Okay Tamminator.
I see to make you angry when I don’t mean to. I just though that there might be some technical problem of some kind, or worse, hackers.
I’m not mad. Sometimes I am a hothead, and I apologize for that. But as you can see, this is the first time I’ve been able to get on HillBuzz today, and it’s 5:20 PM. Only Kevin and myself can approve comments, and sometimes I have as many as 200 to read.
Thanks for understanding. I’ve got a huge project I’m working on, and I’m super busy, so comment posting will be slower.
Sorry about that, everyone!
I totally understand Tamminator. Sometimes when communicating online people’s true meaning can be misunderstood because you cannot hear their voice or see their facial expressions. I just wanted to assure you that I was not being critical of Hillbuzz’s practises, I was just wondering if there was some kind of technical problem or worse.
Good luck to you and Kevin on your other projects.
Cool. No technical stuff this time, so don’t worry. If there are gaps of time posting, you now know why.
Anything worse, I’ll let you know. Thanks, Mimi!
Mimi, I am nothing but greatful for the work these guys do for us. They are real people with lives and jobs. We shouldn’t complain when we receive gifts.
Judi
If you read my posts you will see that I was not complaining at all. I was just wondering what happened to the comments. I am more than greatful for the work that Hillbuzz does and I am quite active myself in trying to change the course that our nation has taken. I think we are all in this together and Hillbuzz is a great resourse for those of US who wish to network to make a difference in our political situation.
Okay Mimi, I take back my smarkyness. Sorry
Thanks judi,
As we say in Philly, foged abodid.
