MICHIGAN GROUND REPORT: What's going on in Grand Rapids?
Dear HillBuzz:
I live in the third congressional district in Grand Rapids Michigan. The RINOS and eeyores are foolishly supporting the Democrat Pat Miles, friend of Barry but despite their handwringing (and mushy cucumber sandwiches) the conservative candidate Justin Amash is well ahead in the polls. Lots of red and white signs are all over town, and he has a good solid lead over the liberal. The eeyores and RINOS are scared of someone who actually will keep his word and will not play nice. The GOP candidate for governor Rick Snyder is also looking like he will win. The dems are getting nastier in their ads (personal and viscious). The changes in the last 2 years: Obama supporters were out of control in 2008. Our gay neighbor (love the guy) proudly HAD an Obama sign on his door that has inexplicably disappeared over the last year. The other folks we know who supported Obama are either disappointed and seeing through the smoke and mirrors or are really really quiet about politics these days. The only supporters of Obama I know are supporting a black man being “put down by the man.” I have also seen less and less Obama stickers and more and more Tea Party bumperstickers around town. There are even Republican yard signs in areas traditionally very democrat. It is a lovely sight. I am hoping for change allright but that change would be the folks in Saguatuck/Douglas finding common cause with the folks in Hudsonville and getting the frauds out of office in 2010 and 2012.
Thank you for all you have done and the inspiration you boyz are!
With love

As a transplanted Michigander, I was wondering what was happening in Grand Rapids. I have family that live and work in the Grand Rapids area. It broke my heart to see the changes that had occured when I last visited there a couple of summers ago. My dh ~who is from AR~ is always impressed with the work ethic that he sees evident in not only my family, but others in the area. I pray that we are victorious there.
So do we. There is a silent majority that is waking up. For the betterment of the state and region.
I was talking with someone who works for the state the other day and is a democrat as well. He was very excited and talked very positively about working with Snyder when he’s elected. I found that very interesting when he said that as he’s a Democrat to the core.
Bernero looks like a wife-beater to me.
no, he can’t be b/c his wife apparently feels very entitled. he came into our coffeeshop today to meet & greet, and i guess his entourage not only didn’t tip, but skipped out without paying for their meals. well, one guy did tip- the guy working today told me he had probably waited tables. but bernero’s wife just took her stuff and sat down- my guy said he didn’t like her from the get go, and all the people (with the exception of the tipper) were just obnoxious and rude.
somehow kate segal (D- but very nice and efficient) found out & called and offered to pay for his food. she was told no b/c it had nothing to do with her, and we would have comped it all since he was bringing us business- but it was rude to just assume.
our guys on the paper were also in. they were not excited about covering bernero- they are sick of the electioning. i said it was over in a week, but then the 2012 would start up. they were very excited about obama back in 08, but now….not so much. they haven’t said negative stuff- they just haven’t said anything. tho the one started to say something about sarah palin- not bad- just something about 2012 and how she draws people, but then the stupid phone rang & i missed the rest of it.
It doesn’t suprise me one bit that his wife and his entourage acted that way.
He may not be a wife beater, but dang, he looks like a thug.
My sister lives in Holland, Mi. It is amazing how much that area has changed in 10 years. When she moved there it 10 years ago, it was SOOO conservative. It seems like as businesses moved in over the years, it brought leberals in. Good luck with changing people in Saugatuck!! One of my very good friends from there disowned me after I openly left the D party. She still posts on FB things like’ “Socialism, here we come!” and she means that in a good way.
Here in the Detroit area, my republican congressional candidate, Rocky R., is up in the polls by 2.5%. I pray he beats Peters!!
I hope he does too! I’ve heard nothing but wonderful things about Rocky, and I’m way up north from you.
I live in Democrat la la land. The Obama supporters are still strong up here. I’m tired of our newspaper and it’s darn editorial page. I’d cancel it, but it’s the only way I can find out about high school sports up here – plus, my kids are in it all of the time.
I’m in Ferndale – I am rooting for Rocky (not my district, though)! Also rooting for Don Volaric, who is running a pretty good race on a shoestring budget against Sander Levin. Wish us luck!
Hope Dr Steele is able to beat that old commie codger, Dingell! Dingell’s tv ads are criminal.
One good thing about having kids in the house is that the Disney Channel is on all of the time and the political ads aren’t.
Hope Dingell is gone come Tuesday.
I just drove through Ferndale last week. I can’t believe how much things have changed down there.
That is weird that I saw a Peters sign in Ferndale…Have you met Rocky? I really like him! He is no cocktail party republican! Yes, please can we get rid of Dingell!!
Fingers crossed.. and some prayers too! i will be voting for Dr. Rob Steele. How wonderful will it be to hear on TV that Dingell has been unseated. Dr. steele has 10 votes coming from my family.
Saugatuck/Douglas is Michigan’s “Boystown” besides Ferndale that is, although I would definately prefer Douglas, it’s more scenic for sure.:o)–
– forlorn Detroiter transplanted to to the GR’s 8th district, 20 years hence…. Sorry, once a Detroiter, always a Detroiter.
PS- at the Kent county GOP phonebank, a few weeks back, I was told Snyder was tracking at a 20% lead against Bernero, topping any other gubernatotial candidate in the US. He’ll definately take it.
It shoulda been Devos a few years back– Just sayin.
We agree. Devos froze when Granholm and the Dems attacked his family. Snyder is much better at handling the attacks than Devos was.
My relatives are in the Detroit area.
And we all know who reigns from Hudsonville… Taylor Lautner <3–
Those RINO’s love being the big wigs in their party. It is more of an image role and a chance to attend party socials. The cocktail Party are not the believers, they didn’t give us Reagan or the 1994 election that was the Conservatives.
Also Pelosi will not be Speaker, Hoyer will if he wins will be majority leader. The GOP need to pick Canter for speaker, he is the best candidate who could hold the GOP Conference together.
I would like to add an New York perspective. I live in upstate New York, just outside of Cooperstown. I hope I offer a unique perspective!
Living in NY-24 I can tell you that Hanna is gaining momentum.
I took my 2 year old son to the barber shop this morning. An elderly gentleman was in the chair getting a trim before retiring to Florida for the winter. Talk turned to politics, as they always seem to do in these settings. This traditional democrat, trying to relive the glory days of the Clinton Administration, describes Richard Hanna as the lesser of two evils. For upstate New York (Cooperstown), this is near heretical thinking. By the way the barber is a supporter because Richard gets his hair cut there every other Saturday. There is a monumental shift taking place, even in Now York.
The problem, as my friend in the chair, noted is that Carl Paladino is a drag on the party and the vote. That he threatened a reporter ends all viability as a candidate regardless of his baseball bat! I am afraid this will limit turnout or preclude a secondary democratic vote for Michael Arcuri or Kirsten Gillibrand.
Joe DioGuardi, who promises a strong finish has been touring the state since June and has overcome tremendous obstacles to be in the position of being the “51st vote” against the Obama, Reid, Pelosi trident, but he lacks cash and traditional media support. I follow the NY political blogs and it is Paladino vs Cuomo all the time. DioGuardi/Gillibrand get little interest in spite of very interesting associations that have been noted in a largely unexamined Senate candidate who has recreated herself from a socially liberal, fiscal conservative to a Chuck Schumer pawn who does what she is told to do.
Throughout her career this is demonstrably true. She ably represented the interests of the Tobacco industry as they committed perjury before congress. She, at a minimum, aided and abetted the housing crisis with her work at HUD. Again, she did what Andrew Cuomo told her to do. Now in the Senate she has been a dependable vote for Schumer, Reid and Obama. She has not a been a leader despite tremendous opportunity to take that role. She is no Hillary Clinton! She is a follower
Back to Hanna, I wouldn’t trust the polls. I think the race is much closer than the 5% Siena finds. The question is do you think Paladino is going to be a factor. If he is, multiple congressional races will go from toss up to lean dem. I truly don’t know.
Vote Hanna/DioGuardi!
I am a registered Republican voting for Bernero. After I watched the debate, it occurred to me why Mr. Snyder declined other opportunities to debate. He doesn’t seem to have any answers.
I’m a registered Democrat voting for Mr. Snyder. There’s no way I’m voting for Bernero after what he has done for Lansing.
Why are you voting for Virg? What has he done other than sling mud? Please inform me and the rest of the nice folks here about his qualifications and more importantly, his plan to get Michigan back working.
Rocky Raczkowski – combat veteran, youngest majority floor leader in the nation during his term as a Michigan state representative and a bonafide conservative patriot – needs to go to DC to work for Michigan.
The incumbent – Obama, Pelosi, Reid stooge Gary Peters – was elected two years ago with Moveon.org’s cash and anti-Bush rhetoric. Peters obediently fell into line voting enthusiastically for Obamacare, Cap & Trade and the $787 Billion What Stimulus, despite the overwhemling objection of the folks back home who he ignored.
This year Peters is running another well-funded smear campaign, carefully skirting his foul voting record and the fact that he’s a union-backed Dem.
Rocky’s the real deal. Let’s send Peters packing and Rocky to DC!
Rocky for Congress!
And if you don’t know Michigan’s Thaddeus McCotter, check him out. Very cool, very smart and running the very best ad for 2010:
