What: The Second Presidential Debate between Hillary and Trump
When: Sunday 10/09/16, sometime between 630pmCT and 800pmCT (hell if I know when it really starts)
Where: On the tee-vee and also on computers via the Internets and YouTubes. Also CSPAN.
Why: Because we are friends like this, I’ve blocked out the whole night to watch all of this for you so you don’t have to. You’re welcome. What follows is not a transcript. It’s just stream of consciousness as things happen. I won’t go back and edit or spellcheck any of this, so ignore the typos. I’m just reacting to what I see happening on the screen.
Before we get into tonight’s debate, let’s spend a few minutes talking about the craziness from the last few days regarding that Trump/Billy Bush locker room banter.
One of the most fascinating things about this election is that Trump really is up against not only Hillary, but against the entire Establishment. This means that the Bush family and other Cocktail Party Republicans are working with Democrats to defeat Trump. The GOP wants to lose this election and they want Hillary to become president. If you can’t see that, something is wrong with you.
The Establishment really wants to push George Soros’ agenda, which is the destruction of the United States as we know it and the eventual creation of some kind of North American entity that would exist in a future where the borders between Mexico, the US, and Canada is erased and one supersized country is formed. Recent transcripts that were released by WikiLeaks of Hillary’s private speeches shows that she wants this…and that she has for years been working as a puppet for Soros. This is all what people have long suspected, but now there’s proof.
Of course, the Media didn’t want to report on that…so it dug up an old tape from 11 years ago of Trump and Billy Bush talking about women the way that straight guys talk about women in a locker room.
I don’t hang out with a lot of straight guys, but I can tell you that even in 2016 it’s hard to avoid overhearing conversations like this wherever men are together in a private setting. I worked for a consulting firm downtown in the Loop here in Chicago and the executives would have lunch all the time in this little hole in the wall in Greek Town. Sometimes I’d be asked along if I was working on one of their projects and they’d write it off as a business lunch, with us supposedly going for gyros to talk about work stuff. Really, when they’d all get together outside the office they would be talking about women. All of them were married. All of them were in their 50s and 60s. But they would talk about tits and ass and, yes, pussy. They were very bawdy and ribald. I was always completely uncomfortable and thought the whole thing was awkward, but it was a good job that paid really well and so I endured it.
I have to say that I hated those lunches and dreaded being invited, but sitting there and listening to those pigs was part of what I had to do to keep that job. I feel like Billy Bush was in a similar position in his interview with Trump. Bush seemed uncomfortable but joined in, probably because he wanted Trump to keep doing interviews with him (or else his career would suffer).
At the gym, you could walk into the locker room any time it is busy and there would be some guys talking about women, having sex with women, women they liked, etc. It’s surprising that this is not young guys, in their teens or twenties, but always older guys. Maybe this will all stop when my age cohort is ourselves in our 50s in ten years. Or, maybe younger guys do it too but don’t have a need to be so vocal about it until they get older. Maybe the braggadocio is part and parcel with getting older…they see less action in real life, so they want to make up for it with the telling of stories and the banter.
I was at a Fourth of July cookout this year where I didn’t know a lot of people. I ended up talking to a guy who had read the book that Megan Fox and I published back in May; it was nice that he wanted to hear more about our war with the George Soros-backed American Library Association, which is one of my favorite topics of conversation. But after we were done talking about that, he veered the conversation into talking about the women who were in their bikinis at the pool party and he got into the tits/ass/pussy territory. You’d think he would know from reading the book that I’m gay and wouldn’t be interested in that conversation, but he was drinking and having a good time and clearly felt comfortable with me, so that’s what he started going on about.
Thinking about this now, I realize that gay guys get into really vulgar things too, just not about women. There are a surprising number of gay sports bars in Chicago now. Go into any one of them when some game is on and you’ll hear a lot of sexual banter…all objectifying the millionaire men up on the screening, prancing around in their skintight spandex sportsball pants or adjusting themselves like they are giving a free show to the fans at home.
I think that guys just talk this way when they are together and they feel comfortable doing so, believing they are not being recorded or what they are saying is not being broadcast around the world. In high school, we had this stupid thing called “home room” where we’d all have to be there by 730am to sit around and listen to morning announcements for half an hour before classes started at 800am. Home room was gender-segregated for some reason, which was the only time in our day besides gym class that was all-boys like that. This was Catholic school in the 1990s, and the football players would loudly talk during home room about sex and girls and would say some pretty vulgar and vile things. One home room teacher I remember was one of the football coaches and he would laugh at some of what he was hearing. He would never tell any of them to stop. Home room was an extension of the locker room, so they were just behaving the same way they do in the locker room.
I’ve never liked any of this banter so I’ve never joined in. We all have topics we love to talk about. I like talking about politics or the ins-and-outs of fighting bad library boards…and I can talk about that stuff for hours. A lot of guys — probably a majority of guys — really like talking about sex. A lot of women like gossiping and putting other women down or judging people. The majority of gay guys like doing all those same things too. I have no idea what lesbians talk about when they are together, but I’m sure it’s not how to achieve world peace or the finer points of 18th Century romantic poetry.
Seeing this big stink over Trump’s banter with Billy Bush from 11 years ago makes me wonder if any of these people had ever heard Lyndon B. Johnson speak. That man was a true pig. He would carry his dogs around by their ears and would apparently expose himself to people to make a point during conversation. Someone would ask him why he wanted to do something and instead of giving them a normal, sane-person answer, he’d whip out his penis and say “This is why.” Yet, Johnson remains one of the Democrats’ favorite presidents.
All of this foolishness makes me very angry that the Media has never — not in 20+ years — wanted to talk about the things that Bill Clinton did to women. Here, the Media is demanding that Trump leave the race and quit his campaign because he was secretly recorded talking about some woman he thought was hot. Yet, no one is ever allowed to discuss the horrors that Bill Clinton clearly subjected women to through the years.
Back during the 2008 campaign, those of us supporting Hillary would dread encountering anyone who brought up Paula Jones, Juanita Broaddrick, Kathleen Willey, or Monica Lewinsky. We never had anything to say. Remember this is before Bill Cosby was toppled for similar behavior. No one wanted to believe Bill Cosby did any of the things he’s been accused of because all of us grew up loving Bill Cosby and his tee-vee shows. The Huxtables remain one of my favorite tee-vee families ever and I doubt that will ever change. I hate believing that Bill Cosby was a rapist and I still can’t wrap my head around his doing anything like that (when, as a famous celebrity, you’d think that he’d have plenty of willing participants for whatever he wanted to get up to…just as celebrities today never have to be lonely if they don’t want to be). Bill Clinton had fame and power too, but there are many women out there who continue to claim that he raped them…and then afterwards Hillary Clinton participated in terrorizing the women who spoke out against Bill. Why is Bill Cosby crucified for things that in many cases are not nearly as bad as what Bill Clinton is accused of doing to Jones, Broaddrick, Willey, Lewinsky, and others?
Breitbart’s been running a lot of articles on this hypocrisy today, including old interviews where Hillary in 1992 was talking about Gennifer Flowers and other accusers. Hillary really was an effective attack dog for Bill back then. She really went for the throat when it came to going after the women who spoke out against her husband.
I don’t think Millennials know anything about this. I doubt they’ve seen any of those old videos. But they sure are a lot more interesting than Donald Trump and Billy Bush being secretly recorded in 2005. If suddenly that interview is news then let’s all revisit Hillary’s many interviews in the 1990s about Bill’s sexcapades and address what Hillary did to the women who spoke out against her husband.
I’ll be watching the debate on CSPAN with YouTube feeds as backup.
Trump apparently had a press conference with some of the women who accuse Bill Clinton of rape. The only thing is that they didn’t really swing hard at either Bill or Hillary. If they really feel that he raped them, then they should have come out and said the details. Millennials don’t know any of this. And if they feel that Hillary really destroyed their lives and they are afraid of her, then they should come out and say that. Instead they used euphemisms and were too polite. I’m not sure why they decided to be like that. Some GOP consultant probably advised them. Why anyone is still listening to these consultants is beyond me.
The Today Show also announced that it is suspending Billy Bush…for having a private conversation off camera in which he engaged in locker room banter. I hope Billy Bush has a great lawyer and sues the crap out of NBC.
711pmCT = CSPAN is talking about these Town Hall debates and how they started in 1992. They have a guy on the phone called Jeremy Epstein who was one of the people who asked a question about jobs in 2012. He talked about how he was chosen to ask his question and said that no one wrote his question for him. He was selected by the network to ask a question, then was given four cards to write questions. Candy Crowley then picked the question she wanted him to ask and he was the first one to ask a question. This was the debate where Candy Crowley teamed up with Obama against Romney and claimed she was “fact-checking” but she was actually wrong. Romney stupidly never challenged her or called her out. Crowley mysteriously disappeared from life after that.
Washington University in St. Louis is hosting the debate. Undergraduate tuition there is something like $52,000/year. Geesh. They started hosting debates in 1992 because some other school backed out, so they got the chance to host the Bush/Clinton/Perot debate. Anheuser-Busch gives a lot of money to put on all these debates, since 1996.
718pmCT = They are talking about Donald Trump doing something splashy on Facebook a minute or two ago. I don’t know what they are talking about but maybe they mean that press conference with the women who accuse Bill Clinton of rape. This looks like it got almost a million views already.
728pmCT = CSPAN is asking people what questions they would ask at the debate. Have you noticed something? Every four years, college students come on and talk about college loan debt. That’s been the same thing since the 1990s. Nothing has ever changed or improved with that. Really, all these questions are always the same. It’s like we never make any progress with anything. If people keep saying the same things year after year, then the people who get elected don’t ever address any of these issues. It all just keeps repeating over and over again forever like Groundhog Day.
732pmCT = My hometown paper, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, said today that Trump is “dangerously unfit to be president” but that Hillary Clinton is not a good candidate either. I feel like this is something that is said every election too: people enjoy saying that it’s “the lesser of two evils” and they gripe about the candidates. But I don’t know who they would have wanted to run. No one ever says. The Left also enjoys making the Republican candidate, whoever it is, sound like the second coming of Hitler. But when the election is over, they go back to liking that person. John McCain was accused of wanting to kill gay people and do all sorts of evil things…and now the Media loves him again. Same thing with Romney. Remember how Bain Capital was supposed to be the worst thing on the planet? And now Obama is going golfing with executives from Bain and Romney is the darling of the Media again. See how that works? Doesn’t anyone else get tired of this?
736pmCT = Trump arrives in a normal looking car. Not some weird kind of fancy medical “Scooby Van” that Hillary rides around in. Trump, Melania, Ivanka, and Ivanka’s husband all arrived together.
On the show Empire this week, the Lyons family rode around in a van like Hillary’s. The inside was very plush. This appears to be the new thing to ride around in, instead of a limousine. I guess that limos are too Dynasty/1980s.
742pmCT = Here’s this woman again. She says that all the sets you see were used at the VP Debate the other day. They disassemble everything and ship it from site to site. Sounds like a lot of work. Why not just have all the debates in the same place and save money?
These people claim these debates are nonpartisan. They said that they institutionalized the debates in 1987 and that they are nonpartisan. But how come they always pick moderators that actively help the Democrat candidate?
He says the people selected to be in the audience are all undecided. Again, I don’t know who these people are and what’s wrong with them that they can be “undecided.” I don’t get it. When I walk into an ice cream shop, that’s a pretty rare event. I might go to an ice cream shop once, maybe twice, a year. It’s a special treat. I lean towards getting pistachio or peach…but when I get in the shop I might see something more interesting. That’s what being “undecided” means in my life. I think I’m only “undecided” about things like ice cream or maybe what I would order in a restaurant, but even then I have favorites I always gravitate towards. Sometimes I regret the mistake of straying from what I normally always get because I picked something weird because it sounded fun, like Zanzibar Chocolate or blueberry cheesecake. And then I feel bad that I didn’t get peach or pistachio like always.
I don’t know how people could really be “undecided” about something like who to vote for. Ice cream I get being “undecided” about…but how could you not know which candidate you support when they are so different?
749pmCT = Hillary arrives, but in a normal car, not her medical “Scooby Van.” That’s really interesting. So she stopped using it and drove in a normal car tonight. Interesting.
Hillary is wearing black and white tonight. This is a surprise. I thought she’d be wearing blue, since she wore read during the first debate. Or I thought she would go with pink this evening. I don’t remember the last time I saw her in black and white like this. It’s an interesting choice.
Clinton’s accusers are getting a lot of air time.
Washington University went political and had the Student Union President (who is from Singapore) speak. They are big on “Diversity!”…but to me shouldn’t an American student be president of the Student Union? Why let a foreign student have that spot?
Claire McCaskill is in the audience. One of the worst human beings on the planet. Remember how she backstabbed Hillary in 2008 and was flying around with Obama on his campaign jet like she was his stewardess? She should be thankful every day that the GOP ran that idiot Todd Aiken against her in the last election. She would have lost otherwise. Now she’s trying to make up with Hillary still.
Two more junky moderators. That Martha Raddatz who hid the ACORN scandal in 2008 and Anderson Cooper, who pretended to be straight for years until finally admitting he was gay, as if it was something to be ashamed of. Why do Republicans allow these people to keep moderating debates? They need to pick unknowns. Don’t pick famous people to be the debate hosts. Pick totally unknown professional moderators, like the kind who moderate settlement agreements or divorces.
I kind of have a crush on Donald Trump Jr. I think he’s sexy in a cocky way. I can’t get over how gorgeous Melania is. Ivanka too. They are stunning. I think it’s funny when some people try to start the meme that Don Jr. and Eric are “Uday and Qusay”…because few people even know who Uday and Qusay are. Mitt Romney had some handsome sons as well.
Bill Clinton looks like such an old man now. I think Chelsea is pretty but I don’t know why she married that man. His parents sound crooked. I think at least one of them went to jail. I’m surprised they didn’t marry Chelsea off to one of the Bushes, since the Bushes and Clintons are pretty much merged into one Establishment royal family at this point.
805pmCT = Going over the rules of the debate, telling people not to applaud or burp or anything during the event.
Hillary and Trump did not shake hands when they came out.
Sassy Black Woman gets first question. She asks “Are you all role models or what?”
Hillary: We must celebrate DIVERSITY. We will reach out to boys who want to be girls and have them help our country. My slogan is Stronger Together. Let’s overcome divisiveness and do the big goals. Let’s have an economy. But not just at the top. Let’s put people in preschool. Then college. We will achieve goals and do things that other people can’t do. I will earn your vote and be elected in November. I want to be the president for all Americans, regardless of political beliefs. Let’s heal and come together.
Trump: I agree with that, everything she said. I began this campaign because I was tired of seeing foolish things happen. I’ve gotten to know people over the last year and a half as a politician, can’t believe I am a politician now. I want to make America great again. I am horrified by the bad deals we are in. Obamacare and Iran Deal. All these one sided transactions. We are doing so badly in business and trade Huge deficits. $800Billion deficit. We are going to have a strong border. Bring back law and order. Have better trade deals. Bring back respect to law enforcement. Fix our inner cities. For blacks and hispanics too. Make America Great Again.
Anderson Cooper: You brag about assaulting women. There was a tape. What say you?
Trump: That’s just locker room talk. ISIS drowns people and chops off heads. This is like Medieval Times, the carnage all over the world. Can you imagine the people in ISIS doing things to us. Yes, I am embarrassed by that tape and I hate it and it’s locker room talk. ISIS happened because of bad judgment. We need to get onto more important things and bigger things.
Cooper: Did you kiss and grope women?
Trump: I am embarrassed by that tape but I have respect for women. I am going to make our country safe. We will have borders. They are poring in from all over. We will make America Great Again, Safe Again, and Wealthy Again. We have to build up the wealth of our nation. That’s what I want to talk about.
Hillary: I spent a lot of time thinking over the last 48 hours. With prior nominees, I disagreed with them but I never questioned their fitness to serve. Donald Trump is different. He is not fit to be president and commander in chief. Many Republicans say the same thing. What we saw and heard on Friday was Donald talking about women and what he does to women. He says the video does not represent who he is. But I think it does represented who he is. We have seen him insult women and rate women and rank them from 1 to 10. He embarrasses women. We saw him spend a week denigrating a former Miss Universe. This is who Donald Trump is. It’s not only women and the video that raises questions about his fitness. He targets immigrants, Hispanics, Muslims, POWs, and others. We must answer the question of who are we? I want to send a message and we all should. We need to send a message to every boy who wants to be a girl that we will respect each other and we will celebrate our diversity. These are important values to me. This is the America that I will serve.
Trump: It’s just words folks. Those words from her I’ve been hearing for many years. Hillary was supposed to bring back jobs to upstate New York. She constantly talks about the inner cities, which are a disaster in every way possible. I’m going to help blacks and Hispanics. She’s done a terrible job. She wants their vote but does nothing and then she comes back years later.
Martha: This tape is the most talked about story in history. Millions of people discussing this tape and we are going to talk about the tape some more. Let’s talk about you on a bus 11 years ago.
Trump: That was locker room talk. I’m not proud of it. That was something that happened. If you look at Bill Clinton. Mine are words and his are action. There has never been anyone in history as abusive to women as Bill Clinton. Hillary Clinton attacked those women viciously. Four of them are here tonight. One woman was raped at 12 years old and Hillary was laughing at the girl who was raped. Kathy Shelton is here tonight. Don’t tell me about words. Let’s talk about actions. President Clinton was impeached. He lost his license. He had to pay $850,000 to Paula Jones who is here tonight. When Hillary brings up some words from 11 years ago, Hillary should be ashamed of herself.
Hillary: Let me start by saying that what he says is not right. He says what he chooses. He does not answer questions but talks about what he wants. That’s his choice. When I hear something like that I am reminded what my best friend Michelle Obama says. When you go low, I get high. If this was just about one video, I would understand it. You can draw your own conclusions about if he respects women. He never apologizes to anyone. He never apologized for the Wrath of Khan. He attacked people for weeks over their religion. He never apologized to the Mexican judge or the reporter who he mimicked and mocked. He never apologized for the racist lie. He owes the president and the country an apology.
Trump: You owe the president an apology because of Sydney Blumenthal and Patti Solis Doyle who sent the pictures of Obama around in Muslim garb. Number two, Michelle Obama…I’ve seen the commercials they did on you. Michelle Obama talking about you Hillary. You talk about your friend. Go look at the 2008 race, that you lost fair and square, unlike the Bernie Sanders race according to WikiLeaks. Sanders never had a chance. He signed on with the Devil. You need to apologize for the 33,000 emails that you deleted and acid-washed. And all the things taken from offices. If I win, I am going to instruct my Attorney General to get a Special Prosecutor to look into your situation because there has never been so many lies and so much deception. The people of this country are furious. The good people at the FBI are furious. After you get a subpoena you acid washed and bleached everything. People have been destroyed for doing one fifth of what you have done and it is a disgrace.
Hillary: Everything he said is totally false and I am not surprised. I told people that it’s impossible to fact-check him. Go to my website on the Internets. You can fat check him. We had millions of people fat checking. We fat check all the time. Someone with his temperament should not be in charge of the law.
Trump: Because you would be in jail. (Huge applause from crowd).
Raddatz: You said your email was careless and it was careless and hostile actors were doing stuff. What about that?
Hillary: I made a mistake with the emails. I should not have used a personal email account. I am not making excuses. It was a mistake. But it’s important to point out where there are misleading accusations. After a year long investigation there was no evidence of a hack and no evidence anyone can point to at all that classified stuff went into the wrong hands. I take classified material seriously. I used to be Secretary of State and I knew about secrets. I am committed to taking the information seriously. There is no evidence I did anything wrong.
Trump: Yet, she claims that she didn’t know the letter C on a document meant classified. She’s lying again. She thinks it was fine to delete 33,000 emails. She said it was about her daughter’s wedding and a yoga class. Now she’s saying there was nothing wrong. That was after she got a subpoena. I am so disappointed in Congress for allowing this to happen. Our Justice Department where her husband goes on an airplane with the Attorney General for 39 minutes before a decision is coming down. If you did this stuff in the private sector you’d go to jail.
Hillary: It’s just not true. Those were personal emails. The Republicans are all leaving you Donald. Let’s get to other questions.
Trump: Why aren’t you bringing up the emails Anderson? Look at this, it’s one on three.
Bald Guy in Audience asks about Obamacare:
There is bickering about who will speak first. Trump says that Hillary can speak.
This format is so weird because Trump towers over her.
Hillary says that Obamacare gives people big benefits. No denial of coverage. No limits to coverage. No charging women more. Hillary said that all the benefits will be lost if it is repealed. Then we would have to start all over again. We have 90% coverage now. Let’s get to 100% and keep costs down.
Trump: I get this question more than anything else. Obamacare is a disaster. We all know it. It’s only getting worse. Their method of fixing it is to ask for more money. It’s very bad health insurance. Far too expensive. One of biggest line items. They are creating monopolies. It is a disastrous plan that has to be repealed and replaced. Why do people in Canada come here for big operations? She wants to make our healthcare like Canada.
Super cute guy in front row. Thank you production team!
Anderson Cooper: Bill Clinton said Obamacare is craziest thing in the world. Is that right?
Hillary: If we had to start all over again, we would have something different. Obamacare was meant to fill the gap between people who were too poor and had no resources. Medicaid and Medicare are single payer. People who were working but had no money to afford insurance. That was the slot that the Obamacare response was going to take. 20 million people will lose insurance if we just tear it up.
Trump: Her trying to save Obamacare is ridiculous. President Obama was keeping boundary lines around states. Jonathan Gruber admitted it was a big lie that does not work. We will be able to keep preexisting and to keep people protected. We are going to block-grant into the states so we can take care of people.
Anderson Cooper keeps interrupting him. Not letting Trump talk.
Muslim Woman asks question: claims that there is Islamophobia.
Trump: We have to be sure that the Muslims who are here report bad things going on. Muslims have to report the problems when they see them. If they don’t do that, it’s a very difficult situation. Look at Orlando and San Bernadino and World Trade Center and Paris. Hillary won’t even mention the word Radical Islamic Terrorism. We have to state the problem. She won’t say the name. The name is there. Before you can solve it you have to say the name.
Hillary: There has been divisive and dark things said about Muslims. I want to say that we’ve had Muslims in America since George Washington. We’ve had many successful Muslims like Muhammad Ali. My vision for America is where everyone has a place and they all work hard and contribute to the community. We can’t have demagogic logic. We need Muslims to be our eyes and ears on the front lines. We need them to feel wanted and included and that is what I want to see. I want to defeat ISIS in a coalition with Muslim nations. I want to bring more Muslims here. We are not at war with Islam. We can’t act like we are. I want a country where all Muslims are welcome to move here.
Raddatz: What about Muslim ban?
Trump: Hillary wants to let anyone in here without vetting anyone. People are coming from Syria by the tens of thousands. Hillary wants to allow a 500% increase. People are coming in who we have no idea who they are and where they are from. This is the great Trojan Horse of all time. I believe in building safe zones in the Gulf States overseas. I don’t want to have 100,000s of thousands of people coming in from Syria and we know nothing about them.
Hillary: I want to have more Syrian refugees. I will not let anyone into the country who poses a risk to us. Think of the little four year old boy who drowned after being bombed by the Russians. I believe that Russian aggression causes the Syrian wars. We need to take more refugees to carry the load for Europe. It is important for us to never say we will ban people based on a religion. We are a country founded on religious liberty. How do we ban people without causing great distress? How do we implement religious tests? I think what he says is unwise and dangerous. You can look at the propaganda on the terrorist sites. What he says is used to recruit fighters. This is the tenth or twelfth time that he says he was against the war. Go to my website and you will see.
Trump: You tell lies. We have many criminal aliens and their home countries say they don’t want them. She says we can’t force those other countries to take them back. When Bernie Sanders says she has bad judgement she does. We let drugs pour through the southern border. It shouldn’t be allowed to happen. ICE endorsed me. And they endorsed me because I understand the border. She wants amnesty and open borders. Her judgment is so bad that she should never be president.
Raddatz: Asks about WikiLeaks showing transcripts where Hillary is two-faced.
Hillary: As I recall, that was something I said about Abraham Lincoln and the movie that Steven Spielberg made. It was principled and strategic. I made the point that it is hard to get Congress to do what you want it to do. And Lincoln was saying that he was using two sets of arguments depending on who he was talking to. Let’s talk about the intelligence community saying that Putin and the Kremlin are directing the hacking on American accounts to influence our election. WikiLeaks is part of that. The Russians are doing all this. We have never in our history been in a situation where a foreign power is working to influence the election. They are trying to elect Trump. Maybe because he praises Putin and he wants to do business in Moscow. Donald should release all his tax returns so that…
Raddatz interrupts her.
Trump: She’s caught in more lies. She lies all the time. She’s blaming the lie on Abraham Lincoln now (crowd laughs). Honest Abe never lied. That’s the big difference between Lincoln and you. I think it would be great if we got along with Russia. Whenever anything happens she blames Russia. She thinks that will tarnish me. I have no business there. When I did the old post office on Pennsylvania Avenue. I was chosen to do it because of my balance sheet. I have no loans with Russia. The US government will tell you about it. I pay hundreds of millions in taxes. All of her friends take big deductions, like Soros and Buffett. She has all this money from these people. As soon as my routine audit is finished I will release my returns.
Pink Shirt Guy asks about people paying their taxes.
Trump: She complains about the tax code so why didn’t she change it? All her friends benefit from things. She’s been doing this stuff for 30 years and never changed. And she never will change. I’m going to lower taxes. We have corporations that can’t form. We need to go down from 35% to 15%. We need to cut taxes. Hillary is going to raise all the taxes really high. It will be a disaster for the country. That in itself is a big difference. We are down to 1% and it is no good. We have the highest taxes in the world. I want it down to one of the lowest taxes in the world. She wants massive tax increases.
Hillary: Donald is lying. I keep saying that. He lives in an alternative reality. He is amusing. He hasn’t paid taxes in 20 years so who cares what he says. Donald always takes care of Donald and will give himself a gift. He will raise taxes on middle class families. No one who makes less than $250,000 year should have any increases. Only go for the money, the people who make a lot of money. I voted to close loopholes. He claimed a billion dollar loss in order not to pay taxes. Buffett has said that he should not be paying less taxes than his secretary. I think since the great recession the gains have all gone to the top. Donald pays zero in taxes for vets and military and teachers. We want no one to get away with that.
Cooper: Taxes are an issue. The New York Times says that you claimed a big loss and then avoided taxes for years. Did you use billion loss to avoid taxes?
Trump: Of course I took a write-off. I had depreciation and other things that are allowed. I understand the tax code better than anyone who has ever run for president. Hillary has friends who want all the provisions including the carried interest provision. All her Wall Street friends want that. George Soros and Warren Buffett and these other people all use these tax provisions. I have a big write off and depreciation. If she had a problem, for 30 years she’s been doing this. She talks about healthcare and taxes and she doesn’t do anything but talk. It’s all talk and no action. She has made bad judgement on everything. On Libya and Syria and Iraq. They left a huge vacuum to form ISIS. Congratulations Hillary, great job.
Hillary: Here we go again. I have been in favor of getting rid of carried interest.
Trump: If you were an effective Senator you could have done it.
Hillary: The president has veto power. Let me talk about my 30 years in public service. 8 million kids have health insurance because I work with Democrats and other people to adopt kids. I changed the adoption system and foster care. I rebuilt New York after 9/11 and people were sickened. National Guard has healthcare now and they have safer medicine for children because of me. As Secretary of State, I went around the world, from London to Bombay. I negotiated treaties for nuclear weapons and 400 pieces of legislation. I worked hard to be re-elected in New York. I will take that bipartisan work to get things done. For 30 years I have produced results.
Raddatz: We are interrupting and moving on. Be quiet Donald Trump. You can’t speak. We want to talk about Syria now and Aleppo. There needs to be a war crimes investigation. Someone on Facebook asked about what to do about Syria. Isn’t it like the Holocaust?
Hillary: Syria is catastrophic. We see results of the regime of Assad, with Iran and Russia together bombing Aleppo. I was Secretary of State and I advocated no fly zones and safe zones. We need leverage over the Russians. We need to work with people on the ground. Russia’s ambitions and aggressiveness means they are all in. They want Donald to be president. I will stand up to Russia. We put a lid on the Iranian nuclear program without ever firing a shot. There are war crimes in Syria and in Russia.
Trump: You did a line in the sand and that was bad.
Hillary: No I didn’t, I was already gone. You need a fat check.
Trump: Iran has gone wild with its nuclear program. Russia has a new nuclear program and all our stuff is rusty and old. She talks all tough but she doesn’t even know who the rebels are. We are always arming these people and then they end up being worse than who they go up against. Look at Libya. Everything she has done has been a mistake and a disaster. There was this peace treaty and everyone is excited. Such a dumb deal with Iran and a cash ransom. Iran and Russia are now against us. She wants to fights for rebels. You don’t even know who the rebels are. I don’t like Assad, but Assad is killing ISIS. Russia, Assad, and Iran are all killing ISIS.
Raddatz: Acts nasty, says “let me repeat the question”…something something Syria.
Trump: I want to knock out ISIS. Syria is fighting ISIS. But Syria is really now Russia and Iran. We have to get ISIS. We have to worry about ISIS. She had a chance to do something with Syria. Aleppo is a disaster. Aleppo has basically already fallen. Look at Mosul. Look at the stupidity of our foreign policy. We said when we will be attacking Mosul. Why can’t they do it quietly and make a sneak attack and then inform the public later. Why do they need to say when they will be attacking a place.
Raddatz: Jumps in and says that the military needs to get the civilians out.
Trump: Why can’t they do something secretively and knock out the leadership? I have been reading about Mosul. This is where they think the ISIS leaders are. They are gone because we told them we would be attacking there. With 200 admirals and generals I talk to, Patton and MacArthur are spinning in their graves over how stupid we are now.
Hillary: We can use special forces and enablers and trainers. I hope that by the time I am president we will push ISIS out of Iraq and take Mosul. Donald says he knows more about ISIS than the generals, but no he doesn’t. We do some things to signal to people in pashminas to fight. We need to go after Baghdadi. Big Daddy too. We need to arm the Kurds and show them the way.
Trump: She went over a minute over but you did not interrupt her. I go a second over and you interrupt me. Why?
Angry Black Man question. You think you can be president of all the peoples?
Trump: Yes. She calls people deplorable and irredeemable. Remember NAFTA and how bad that was for everyone. Hillary calls that TPP a gold standard. She lies all the time. I want to address our inner cities and the black people there. She talks about these things for years and does nothing. She talks and does nothing. 45% poverty in the inner cities. Education disaster. Jobs nonexistent. I have 20,000 and 30,000 people at my speeches. What do you have to lose to go with me? She will just be talking. She won’t do anything. She is all talk and it does not get done. She is a disaster.
Hillary: 67% of people voted to re-elect me to my second term. I am proud to have been in public service for 30 years. I worked to give kids with disabilities an education. I worked with getting Latinos to be able to vote. I have a deep devotion to making sure everyone has a place in our country. People are worried they would not have a place in Donald Trump’s America. One woman has a son named Felix and Felix is scared he will have to go back to Ethiopia. Children listen and teachers say that everyone is afraid. It is the Trump Effect. A lot of kids are scared about being sent back to Ethiopia and other places. I want to be the best president I can be for everyone.
Cooper: What about the Basket of Deplorables?
Hillary: I said I was sorry about that. My argument is not with his supporters but with him. The inciting of violence at his rallies and his brutal comments about women and all Americans. What he has said about blacks and Hispanics and Muslims and POWs. I think his tone and tenor is bad. Bernie Sanders and I ran a good campaign on issues. We had differences, but we believed we could make the country better.
Trump: We have a very divided nation. Look at Charlotte, Baltimore, Chicago, Washington DC. We have an increase in murder in our cities. Biggest in 45 years. She has tremendous hate in her heart. When she said Deplorables and Irredeemable, she has tremendous hatred. We can’t have another 4 years of Barack Obama and that is what we would get with her.
Cooper: What about you tweeting at 3am on the toilet or whatever?
Trump: When she says 3am, look at Benghazi. She says she is awake at 3am, she’s not. The famous thing she is going to answer that call…look at Ambassador Stevens asking for help 600 times. She’s just talking to Sydney Blumenthal. Tweeting is a modern form of communication. Whether you like it or not. I am not unproud of it.
Cooper: Does Trump have the discipline to be the leader?
Trump: I’m not surprised to hear that.
Hillary: I watched my husband be president. Incomes went up for everybody. I worked for George W. Bush and I got what New York needed to recover. I worked with and I admire President Obama. There was a lot of bad things we had to do to get back on the right track.
Trump: We have the slowest growth since 1929….
Raddatz: interrupts again…the crowd makes a nasty noise at her.
Blonde Woman asks question about Supreme Court…
Hillary: I want Justices that actually know how the law works. I want them to reverse Citizens United. I want SCOTUS to understand voting rights and not have voter ID. People of color can’t get IDs and don’t know how. I want Roe V. Wade and Marriage Equality. Donald wants people to reverse Roe v. Wade and Marriage Equality. I want a SCOTUS that does not always side with corporate interest. I have very clear views. Time to change the balance. I regret deeply that the Senate has not permitted a vote to approve Obama’s latest pick. If I am president I will immediately move to fill the vacancy.
Trump: Justice Scalia. Great judge. We have that vacancy. We want more judges like Scalia. I have picked 20 already. Highly thought of. Very well reviewed. People who will respect Constitution. Second Amendment is totally under siege. Hillary mentioned contributions. I will have more than $100 million of my money put in. I’m putting in more than $100 million invested. We are raising money for Republicans. Doing small dollar donations. Hillary used power of her office to make $250 million. Why is she not funding her own campaign? That would be a slap against special interests. She’s made a lot of money while Secretary of State. Why not put money into her own campaign?
Hillary: I respect the Second Amendment but I want background checks, no more gun shows, no more online sales.
One of the People From Wreck-It-Ralph asks question about energy:
Trump: We need to bring energy back. Stop the EPA from killing out companies. China is killing out steel. EPA is so restrictive. She wants to kill coal in Ohio and West Virginia. It’s a disgrace.
Hillary: Well, Trump uses Chinese steel to build his buildings. We are for the first time energy independent but the Middle East controls the prices. We have had a lot of damaging effects on the oil companies. The natural gas is a bridge to more renewable fuels. We have to be energy independent so we can stop worrying about the Middle East. We also need to fight Global Warming. We need to revitalize coal companies. We have to do something. But the price of coal is down worldwide.
Raddatz: One more question.
Man in Glasses: Name one positive thing you respect in one another.
Hillary: I respect his children. They are incredibly able and devoted. And that says a lot about Donald. I believe that this election has become in part so conflict oriented and intense because there is so much at stake. We are going to be choosing a president who will set policy for many many years. The SCOTUS and energy and everything. There is a lot at stake. I have tried to put forward policies and plans. I hope people will check on that for myself. I’ve spent 30 years working to help kids and families and I want to do that every single day.
Trump: I consider her statement about my children to be a great compliment. I am very proud of my children, so I consider that a compliment. I will say this about Hillary: she doesn’t quit and she doesn’t give up but she is a fighter. I don’t like what she is fighting for, but I consider that a very good trait.
Cooper/Raddatz: The debate is over. It’s closing time. You don’t have to go home but y’all can’t stay here.
Then everyone mingles with the crowd there. Ivanka and Chelsea talk and laughed together. Everyone poses for pictures. They must have all been given little green disposable cameras because everyone has one. Oh, I just saw a large woman with a big red bag passing out the disposable cameras. So they must have taken people’s cell phones…but then gave them all disposable cameras to use to get pictures with Hillary and Trump.
The Clintons are better at this talking to regular people stuff. The Trumps didn’t get into it immediately and they left way before the Clintons. The Clintons both made sure to talk to everyone. Bill was holding court talking to about a dozen people. Hillary made sure to go and get a picture with everyone. She had her big black Secret Service guy with her.
— That’s a wrap! The next debate is on October 19th! —
