Interesting Facebook exchange in Boystown evidencing disenchantment with Obama even in the Leftiest of Leftist ranks
Here’s an interesting exchange I noticed on Facebook today, involving mainly guys here in Chicago’s Boystown. Remember, these were people who bought all the hopeychangey snake oil Obama sold back in 2008. On top of that, most of these people screamed and yelled RAAACIST! at anyone not supporting Obama or believing he could deliver unto us a perpetual flood of unicorns. The gay community is routinely used by the Left as goons to target, intimidate, and berate conservatives…and in 2008 this dovetailed with the Left’s committed usage of the black community to call anyone opposing Leftist policies RAAACIST…just because.
Ridiculous.
While I caution you that it’s very unlikely any of the people in the thread below — all of whom I’d wager were 2008 Obama voters — would ever think of voting Republican, it sure seems likely at least a few of these gay guys will find something better to do on Election Day in 2012 than making a production of going out to vote for Obama a second time.
Messages reprinted exactly, but names changed to respect people’s privacy:
RUFUS: Feels sorry for all the people that thought Obama was going to be able to slay the dragon known as our government. I like him but I knew he was not going be able to do all that he wanted to do.
CLARK: It’s OUR job to slay the dragon of our government.
DON: Once the House was lost to the tea-baggers and blue dog dems he didn’t have a chance!
EILEEN: It is an impossible task. I admire his couage to try.
TAKA: I think he could of done much better.
RUFUS: Taka, it seems they all could have done better. Remember Clinton?
TAKA: Yes I think Clinton could of done better too.
DEACON: well I wish he had taken the lead on repealing DADT – the people who pushed it and got it overturned were the Log Cabin Republicans. (of all people) some of the disappointment is real. Some of his words have been empty.
RUFUS: I agree.
BLAKE: OR was told to do
CLARK: it seems to easy to sit back and, They could have done better.
ANDERSON: shit, I gave up on that about a week after he took office. His platform was a big, fat lie.
MIKEY: Too true. Fundemental government reform can’t happen with only one elected official, it either has to begin with a wave of like-minded officials swept into office that can’t be bought and sold by big business or with real grassroots anarchy!
TRIPP: No one guy can do it. Tru dat. We have to outsource Congress. Ha! Okay…maybe not. Still, no question that Obama was going to be able to do all he hoped to do. I still think it takes all of us…and he mobilized enough people to scare the patchouli out of the far right. They promptly mobilized and elected people to thwart Hope. Tea, anyone?
Facebook has emerged as a truly impressive tool to get focus-group grade intel into the thinking of people on the Left.
It’s especially easy here in Boystown, where guys collect “friends” in competition to see who can get to the 4,995 friends cut-off the fastest (where Facebook then prevents an account from adding any new friends). This is a big status symbol, popularity contest here in Chicago.
The fun part of it is that 99% of the “friends” these guys have on Facebook are people they don’t actually know, being friends of friends of friends.
Since I’m openly conservative and its known I’m a gay Christian, conservative, Republican writer (it’s still so strange seeing that all together in one place adjective-wise like that, considering where I started before the summer of 2008, when I was a gay, lapsed Catholic, Jacksonian/Hillary, lifelong dyed-in-the-wool Democrat), a lot of the people who’ve Facebook “friended” me would never befriend me in real life.
I’ve said it before but it bears repeating: conservatives have treated me much better as a gay man than the gay community has treated me as a conservative and a Christian.
I think exchanges like the one above are very interesting because even though there are some people who are still repeating the standard-issue talking points about the Tea Party being evil and conservatives being bad (though these guys don’t really understand what they are talking about most of the time), there’s a big upsurge in people like “Rufus” who are realizing they are indeed NOT better off financially than they were before Obama’s election.
They never got any of their hopeychange, and they’re resentful for this.
I still have no idea how the Obama campaign is going to operate in 2012 with people not forgetting all the hopeychange and free unicorn rides they were promised so aggressively in 2008.
The media likes to focus on the slim chances Republicans have of getting people like the Facebook friends above to vote conservative (even if that’s in their own economic best interests)…but little is ever said about how many of these people are going to sit home on Election Day (or, more likely, belly up to a bar somewhere and just avoid everything election-related that day, letting Obama lose because he was not worthy of re-election even though they could not bring themselves to go out and vote against a Democrat).
Have you noticed similar things on your forays into Facebook?
If you are a conservative who has any ability at all to observe the exchanges of Leftists who are in your friend orbit, please consider doing this on a regular basis.
It is much, much better intel than reading comments on political sites because people on these sites (including HB) are not representative of larger communities…by nature of us all being so tuned into politics. On Facebook, however, if a political thread emerges via someone’s wall post, people who would never in a million years go to a political site chime in with their opinions on political things.
I have never seen an ability to collect opinions clandestinely like this before.
Please start using this as a tool to peek into the minds of the Left, as many of them intellectualize and internalize Obama’s consistent failures.

People who unfriended me a few years ago when I started to get involved in the tea party have come around a little. We will never really be friends again because I now know how ridiculously biased and brainwashed they are, but at least we have come tp a point where they have agreed to disagree and they don't think I am a gay bashing racist anymore (just because I am against Obama's policies).
Karen,
But now you’ve lost all the friends who are gay bashing racists because you are clearly not one of them. So you really can’t win can you?
Isn’t dealing with Leftists exasperating?
Try living in Boystown.

Unfortunately true. Warped.
LOL Log Cabin Republicans! LOL
Sorry, can't help but laugh when I read the following comment .
"…DADT – the people who pushed it and got it overturned were the Log Cabin Republicans. (of all people) some of the disappointment is real. Some of his words have been empty."
I find it interesting that "Rufus" and several others talk about "slaying the dragon of government". Is this a common theme among leftist in Boystown? Presumably they mean something other than I would, but perhaps they are not as far from the kingdom as I had thought…
Jack –
I have never, ever heard anyone in Boystown talk about “slaying big government” before. That is a completely new thing to hear coming out of anyone’s mouth here. I really don’t know what to make of it.
The fact that Rufus was not shouted down immediately means something, but I am not sure what yet. It could be one of two things:
(1) People are hurting so much financially that they are starting to wonder where all the tax money goes, since gay sure as heck don’t benefit from any of the Democrats’ entitlement programs (designed to keep black and Hispanics voting Democrat, by keeping them poor and dependent on the state).
(2) Since the two main issues repeatedly beaten into gays for years were DADT and gay marriage, now that DADT is being repealed and civil unions/spousal rights have advanced in a number of states, perhaps there’s a big slice of the gay community that no longer feels it has to lockstep think and vote whatever the Left says.
Remember, for decades gays have been voting against their economic best interests solely because being in good favor with the Left was more important than paying less tax and being treated as actual people, not puppets and dependable goons.
Could the Obamaconomy have finally woken gays up to the reality of voting for the Democrat/Union/Tax Machine over and over again…or is it that the spell was broken with gays when the two big wedge issues that kept them on the reservation disappeared.
I have no idea what the answer is yet but would love to hear what others think on this.
K
I don't think it has anything to do with slaying BIG government, but moreso taking down the people that stand in the way of… whatever they think government is supposed to be. Seems that the only thing everyone can agree on (left, right, and other) is that the government is doing it wrong- what we certainly don't agree on is what the "right" way is!
I’ve said it before but it bears repeating: conservatives have treated me much better as a gay man than the gay community has treated me as a conservative and a Christian.
The gays I have taught to shoot, and most of the gays I know who own guns, were more afraid, or maybe concerned is a better word, of "coming out" to their gay friends about being gun owners and their involvement in shooting sports than they were about letting us mostly white, conservative, straight, knuckle-dragging gun owners know that they were gay. To paraphrase, frankly, we didn't give a damn who or what they slept with. "Are you safe on the range?" "Do you support the RKBA?" "Hey, cool gun, may I try it out? Here, try this stocked 3rd Dragoon first! Don't mind the smoke." That is the kind of thing we were concerned about.
We need to have a national conservative "coming out" day! I have many friends who have seen the light of fiscal conservatism and they, and I cannot openly declare our "tea "party" nature for fear of losing business contacts and being frozen out socially. If we all "came out" on a special day it could be huge! Huge !
Thanks for posting this, Kevin. And BTW, I'm glad to see you back here. I hope all is well with you!

Definitely I have been seeing over the last few years how people have changed their allegiances. yes, most of them would never ever not ever vote for a republican (not even gary johnson or giuliani!), but they won't work so hard for the campaign, or they may just stay home on election day.
It's fascinating to me.
I'm waiting and seeing, and hoping I can vote for the R in 2012. of course I (now) live in GA, so my vote doesn't count all that much anyway.
The conversation almost seems to be advocating anarchy – which would open the door to more headaches {or "hegg-aches", as the Progeny used to call them
} than those conversing would like/anticipate.
Around here {Houston area}, we're getting the delayed 'hit' on employment, though you couldn't prove it by me – foreclosures continue apace, folks are angry/anxious almost all the time.
We have neighbors, who have been utilizing "the system" generationally – the granddaughter got pregnant @ 16, had to have a C-section due to HPV. She gave birth again ~ 2 years later, again with a C-section, all covered by medical assistance {note: C-sections tend to be VERY expensive}. She's on food stamps {since she was first pregnant}, full medical assistance for her & her kids, and seems to believe the government OWES her more. When I try to point out that "the government" isn't providing for her & her kids, but rather the Spousal Unit, the Progeny & I, as taxpayers, that's waved off. She claims to want sterilization, but "they" won't do it, because she's too young. Her daughter {the oldest} is a bratty, self-centered little slug; her son is cute and engaged with the world around him {of course, he's still in diapers}. Two different fathers, neither one in evidence. Of course, "Mom" is anticipating when all Øbama's programs are enacted, she'll be sitting pretty – she's not the sharpest knife in the drawer {none of the family would qualify for Mensa}, so she doesn't realize that, when EVERYBODY is dependent on the government, NOBODY will be happy ……………………………………..
And, Kevin, allow me to offer my "welcome back" – your supernumeraries did an outstanding job, but YOU WERE MISSED!!

With my liberal friends I have noticed a definate behavior pattern. At first there was no living with them when King Putt won. Then the blame Bush, ignor reality began, then on the eve of Nov 2010 election a whole lot of rocking back and forth denying there would be any significant wins by the Pubs. After Nov 2010 there was a sudden silence, shock and denial. That changed into anger and name calling, which lasted until this spring when many of our liberal friends have awoken to the fact that they have either lost their job, their job is hanging by a thread , or they are way underwater on their mortgage and there is no home equity loan left to hit now that the price of everything but their home has gone up. It has gotten very quiet none of them want to talk politics, and although I suspect many will never vote republican, they are going to give the next election a miss. So I guess reality has finally set in and the hype has been seen through.
On another front, I work in the medical field and I hear numerous complaints and comments about how much the patients fear and dislike Obamacare and cracks about how clueless King Putt is. We have noticed a definate upsurge of refusals on name brand meds and proceedures for elderly medicare patients. I never hesitate to give credit where credit is due on who is to blame for this situation.
We have a ground swell of elderly patients who are demanding hip, knee and other ortho surgeries because they fear with good cause that they will not be able to get those procedures when Obamacare really goes into effect. Oh and those new preventative benefits medicare is offering are a joke. The once a year physical is only free if the medicare patient has no long standing health issues. How many 65+ individuals don't have something wrong. The other boondoggle is that many screenings are now limited to once in a lifetime. A whole new chart was issued by HHS which eliminated some screening and placed others under a once only matrix. Basically the approach is if you don't know you have it then we won't have to treat it until it is too late. Obamacare is an attack on the elderly.
