HillBuzz Open Thread: Friday November 11th, 2011

Posted on November 11, 2011 by Justin4HB // Featured Content, Open Threads

[ NOTE: The video above is from the old TV show "What's My Line?", where a panel of celebrities had to guess a famous person's identity by asking a series of questions.  It's sad that Elizabeth Taylor is gone.  She was a marvelously kind woman who was so good to so many...and who was sadly remembered for too long for being sick and in a wheelchair.  It's nice to look back on her in all her glory. ]

Today in History:

2008 – RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) sets sail on her final voyage to Dubai. This was supposed to be turned into a hotel like the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, but because Dubai’s economy collapsed that never happened. It’s weird, but just a few short years ago all the travel magazines and publications like TIME and Vanity Fair or whatever were claiming Dubai would become this futuristic wonderland with all sorts of amazements…but anyone who has ever studied the people who actually live in Dubai knew that would never happen.

2004 – The Palestine Liberation Organization confirms the death of Yasser Arafat from unidentified causes. Mahmoud Abbas is elected chairman of the PLO minutes later. Honest to goodness, there are pictures of Yasser Arafat hanging in Chicago Public Schools like he’s a hero.  It’s beyond sick.

1993 – A sculpture honoring women who served in the Vietnam War is dedicated at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Have you ever been there and seen it in person?  It’s incredible.

1940 – World War II: Battle of Taranto – The Royal Navy launches the first aircraft carrier strike in history, on the Italian fleet at Taranto. Whenever I think of aircraft carriers, I think of the giant G.I. Joe aircraft carrier playset from the 80s that I obsessively wanted one Christmas but was too expensive to get…and it was like this mythical thing always hearing that somebody’s friend’s cousins’ neighbor had it, but I never saw one in the flesh (or, plastic, as the case may be).

oday I think I want to learn why Route 66 faded away.  It goes right through the middle of Chicago, you know.  Someday, I think it would be fun to drive it.  Has anyone done that?

What’s going on in your part of the country today?

What, in your opinion, was the big story from this week?

I'm the kid who sat in history class imagining a World of Warcraft-style epic matchup between various historical figures and cryptozoological beasts or classic movie monsters. Calvin Coolidge could have totally schooled The Mummy. Never underestimate Silent Cal. That's all I'm sayin'.

I've wanted to drive Route 66 ever since I heard about it. I have seen the giant ketchup, excuse me, catsup bottle in Collinsville IL but not sure it's on the Route. But I have seen the sign where Route 66 begins on Adams I believe, across from the Art Institute.

Fri is 11/11/11 except in Europe where it's 11/11/11.

And Nigel Tufnel Day, the guy in Spinal Tap who said their volume went to 11.

    That is all.

    This is precious :)

SOUTH AFRICA: Orion Cold Storage Company in Cape Town has been importing pork (forbidden in Islam) products from Belgium and Ireland, relabeling them as halal sheep and veal products and selling them to the Muslim market.

VOCFM It has also been importing kangaroo meat from Australia, relabeling it as halal beef products; importing poultry from Spain, relabeling them as halal; importing dairy powder for animal feed from Canada and relabeling it as halal skim milk powder,” said South African National Halal Authority’s (Sanha) Maulana Saeed Navlakhi.

Liz Taylor was such a beauty. I remember Roddie McDowell talking about how striking her violet eyes were. It was strange how television cameras and still photography could never quite capture the true color of her eyes.

    This is a fun quiz:

Elizabeth Taylor was best known for her acting as a child star.

    National Velvet springs to mind.

Argh, the GOP is signaling another cave by possibly voting on a plain vanilla BBA, no spending caps, no supermajority required for raising taxes, read this article to learn more http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/house-gop-lik…

      From your link:
"House GOP Likely to Offer Balanced Budget Amendment That Permits Unlimited Federal Spending

      By Matt Cover

      November 10, 2011
(CNSNews.com) – House Republicans appear likely to votes sometime next week on a balanced budget amendment (BBA) that would allow unlimited federal spending and would not require a supermajority in both houses of Congress to raise taxes."

This is the kind of "deal" that gets dems reelected and republicans thrown out. Will they ever learn?

Something to think on – only two years, 8 months, and 17 days to the 100th anniversary of the start of the War to End War. Not very long ago. But, for those born now, it is about as far in the past as the Civil War was for many of us when we were born (roughly).

    And the cost:
    ENTENTE POWERS
    Military dead:
    5,525,000
    Military wounded:
    12,831,500
    Military missing:
    4,121,000
    Total:
    22,477,500 KIA, WIA or MIA

    CENTRAL POWERS
    Military dead:
    4,386,000
    Military wounded:
    8,388,000
    Military missing:
    3,629,000
    Total:
    16,403,000 KIA, WIA or MIA

Through my dad's VFW Post I knew a fair number of WWI vets, even one SpanAm War vet. Likely that gentleman personally knew some Civil War vets. And they likely knew some Rev. War vets. The history of our Republic in the span of four handshakes. We may still have some children of Civil War vets among us http://www2.starexponent.com/news/2010/jun/08/93-…

    Happy Veterans Day: Thank you!

Happy Veterans Day to all who have served our great nation. Thank you for your courage and dedication. Thank you for our freedom. We can’t say it enough.

A special salute to Marines, who celebrated the Corps’ 236th birthday yesterday.

From the Boston Herald, a must-read account from one who served and sacrificed (h/t Jules Crittenden): http://michellemalkin.com/2011/11/11/happy-vetera…

Amen, patti. Thanks for posting the excerpt and link. The soldier's story is heart-rending, and indicative of the enormous sacrifices made by those who serve. The information and links at the end of Malkin's essay offer many ways we can show our appreciation and support for our troops.

So, what agency would you most like to forget?

My number one pick would be the department of education.
They all probably should at least be scaled back, with some being consolidated. At the top of scale back list for me would be:
Department of Education (If not totally eliminated)
    EPA
    Department of the Interior
    Department of Commerce
Department of Housing and Urban Development

Ron Paul’s Plan to Restore America includes $1 Trillion in cuts during his first year in office, a balanced budget in 3 years, and eliminating…

five cabinet departments (Energy, HUD, Commerce, Interior, and Education), abolishing the Transportation Security Administration and returning responsibility for security to private property owners, abolishing corporate subsidies, stopping foreign aid, ending foreign wars, and returning most other spending to 2006 levels.

What a kook! Doesn’t he know that the best way to solve a massive intergenerational debt crisis is to borrow more money from China, bail out more Obama cronies, prop up more government employee pension funds, and print more money?

The ‘Coming Layoffs Due to the Expense of Obamacare’ Story Du Jour

So there’s about 1,000 people who may soon be unemployed but who will still have access to medical treatment, thanks to Obamacare — the law designed in part to serve as a safety net for victims of its implementation. Central planning at its finest.

After witnessing the AG's testimony yesterday and hearing about his "apology" to the Terry family I have a couple of observations:

To have compassion, a conscience, or any sense of right and wrong, one must first have a soul.

I have come to the conclusion that eric holder is actually Igor/Fritz, the evil assistant from the Frankenstein films. A vile, soulless toady that is willing to do anything to please it's master, or anything it thinks will make him happy. That is Igor's (holder's) MO going back even beyond the Marc Rich pardon.

I am shocked and impressed that you came up with this.
I am over 50 and I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS in my entire life – I did, however, attend Chicago public schools.

    Thank You!
