Governor Sarah Palin's about to be tested by fire (literally): Mount Redoubt set to erupt soon, near Anchorage

Posted on January 30, 2009 by HillBuzz // Hillbuzz

82921698CH002_SARAH_PALIN_M

If there’s anyone who can successfully stare down a volcano and win, it’s Governor Sarah Palin.

We wish her and Alaska all the luck in the world, because  seismologists predict Mount Redoubt’s going to erupt soon, 100 miles southwest of Anchorage. Seismic activity at Redoubt’s been increasing dramatically lately, reflecting past eruption behavior (in other words, just like Oprah after a gassy night of chili and sardines, this baby’s going to blow).

Alaska is currently on “Volcano Watch”, the second-highest level of alert (right below, “RUN!”).

The last time Mount Redoubt erupted was from December 1989-April 1990.

Based on what happened almost 20 years ago, the most damage Redoubt will do could be to air travel (since the volcanic ash will rain down on Alaska, clogging engines of planes in the air and generally making everything look gray and terrible).

It just reminds us what a wild and difficult to control state Alaska truly is — and just what sort of unique challenges Governor Palin successfully faces every day, with characteristic grace under fire.

We. Love. This. Woman.

How many volcanoes are active worldwide?

“There are more than 1500 active volcanoes in the world. About 500 have erupted during historical time.”

How many active volcanoes are there in the United States?

“There are about 65 volcanoes in the United States that scientists consider active. Most of these are located in Alaska, where eruptions occur virtually every year. The others are located in the Cascade Range (Washington, Oregon, northern California), or in Hawaii on the islands of Hawaii and Maui. Kilauea volcano in Hawaii is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. It has been erupting almost continuously since 1983!”

Nevermind the people on Oahu dump tons of stuff into the bay. The coastal waters’ fish are inedible/polluted and the state has the highest incident of breast cancer in the country. So, are they to be held accountable for their volcanic eruptions?

Here’s a google map of the location: Mt. Redoubt

If that linky don’t work, you can always throw this into google maps: 60°29’7″ N 152°44’38″ W

The thing to be worried about is a major earthquake, which could turn the alluvial plane where the cities of Kenai and Homer are located into a sort of liquid.

Right about the quake. The strongest in US history have been in Alaska, part of the Ring of Fire. They have minor quakes every day.

I think it shows how well Palin understands her Alaska that she didn’t let the threat of an eruption interfere with her trip to Washington. It may not do anything for weeks or maybe nothing at all.

      Disgusted,

      Shame on you.

Please explain to us why Obama chose to spend June 29th, 2008 getting a haircut and playing basketball on the southside of Chicago instead of marching in the city’s Gay Pride Parade, the largest in the Midwest, to which he was repeatedly invited but did not think it was important enough to attend.

What exactly has Sarah Palin ever done to, in your words, dehumanize and slander anyone? Be specific. You can’t make accusations like that without supporting what you say.

Joe Biden said, during the VP Debate, that the Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin tickets had the EXACT SAME STANCE on gay rights and the gay community. Joe Biden said that. The current Vice President of the United States said he and Palin share the same stance on gay issues.

So, by your statement, Biden is slanderizing and dehhumanizing gays as well.

      Prove otherwise.

Untrue, Disgusted. Gov Palin actually REFUSED to veto a bill that would have overturned an AK Supreme Court decision about employers giving rights to same-sex couples. I’m not clear on the details but I know that’s pretty close, ’cause she got heat from social conservatives on this.

    Her reason?

It wasn’t Constitutional for the executive branch to overthrow a judicial branch decision.

I agree she probably would not march in a Gay Pride parade because she is a social conservative personally.

But she governs as a strict constitutionalist and is rather libertarian in thinking the government doesn’t belong in people’s private lives and should just “live and let live.”

“Evangelical” derived from the Greek word “euangelion” which means: “gospel” or “good news.”

I thought that described Obama’s faith as well, unless you know something we don’t?

The visiting pastor made a remark about the significance of the inauguration and was met with stony silence. I wasn’t too surprised since many of the cars in the church parking lot still have ‘Hillary’ bumper stickers.

Every major freight or passenger airline that flies from the US/Canada east of the Mississippi River longitude and north of the Mason Dixon to any major city in East or Southeast Asia (direct or with a connection) must fly an arcing route that takes the plane directly over Anchorage Center (often with a fueling stop at Anchorage Airport) and over the Aleutians. The return route works the same way. Anchorage is thus a very critical transit hub for business and trade between North America and Asia, from Japan and China to Indonesia and Singapore. Diverting this massive freeway in the sky away from Alaska because of a volcano would be a major challenge for nations and cities far beyond the State of Alaska itself. It would be a very high profile challenge for Palin.

I have a gay cousin, who is very close to my heart, and she attends an MCC church too. I want gay and lesbian Americans, like my cousin and your son, to have their equality recognized instead of being treated like second-class citizens.

I feel as if this would be more of a possibility under Barack Obama than it would Sarah Palin. I know Palin didn’t veto that bill, because it would have been unconstitutional. But the important thing – in my mind, at least – is that, if Palin had her way, gay marriage would be banned.

Are you some kind of psychic. Where does the “if Palin had her way” thing come from?

You can’t make statements like that without backing them up. When has she ever supported a constitutional ban on gay marriage? When did she ever campaign for that?

You know what you sound like? One of those people who cries out about drunks and alcohol and how terrible bars are, but then you sit at home in your underpants drinking the cooking Sherry and vomiting all over yourself.

So, the thing you push on someone else and accuse them of is the thing you do or believe in yourself. It’s called projecting.

    To disgusted

It is a fact that Governor Palin vetoed a bill that would have recinded benefits enjoyed by same sex couples in the State employ. The fact that she upheld a finely balanced interpretation of the constitution against what might be her own personal convictions is to her credit. Remember this also. Goveror Palin was elected Governor and continues to enjoy high approval among an electorate that is dispropotionally unaffiliated (43% independents) and is, according to recent Gallup polls, one of the least religious Sates in the US. This is hardly the profile of a fringe ‘rightest’ or a intolerant fundamentalist.

Karen J: Every single one of the issues you raise is verifiably false and has been shown as such over and over again.
