GOP Plan vs Harry Reid’s Plan
Today…Harry Reid presented his debt plan and the GOP presented their debt plan today. Of course, each side doesn’t like the others sides plan. I think this leaves us in the same place we have been…..nowhere.
Here are the basic points of Harry Reid’s plan (as best I can tell)
1. His plan doesn’t reform entitlements…at all.
2. His plan counts on a lot of savings from the withdrawal of our troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. (a big gamble, I think)
3. His plan counts heavily on discretionary spending cuts.
4. His plan doesn’t include tax increases. (I’m suspicious of this one)
5. His plan will carry through until the end of 2012…and the elections.
The Republican leadership has just announced their plan so I am still trying to learn the specifics. It isn’t exactly cut-cap-balance but it’s close (according to Speaker Boehner). It only increases the debt ceiling by $900 billion. They also generate revenue by cutting discretionary spending by 1.2 trillion.
The big difference is that Obama is demanding that the plan extends through the end of 2012 (and through the elections) and the GOP’s plan only carries through until early 2012.
I think Harry Reid’s plan has a lot of “fuzzy” math involved and basically tries to throw a bone to both sides….no tax increases to please the GOP and no debt debate again until after the 2012 elections to please the White House. Reid is such a mealy mouthed schmuck…I have a very hard time watching him. Listen to his news conference (given just a few hours ago). He blames the Tea Party “extremist” for controlling the GOP and says that these extremists are ignoring what the American people want. (Warning…grab your barf bag before hitting the play button)

Hey Harry…..these “extremists” are the American people and it is YOU and your goons who are ignoring us.
From what I can tell by listening to the beltway pundits on TV right now, neither side is going to go for the other’s solution. It looks like they will be heading back to the drawing board unless someone surprises (or disappoints) us.
Obama is addressing the nation AGAIN tonight at 9pm.
What can we expect him to say? I’m sure he’ll say that he is the reasonable mature one and it’s the Republican leadership that’s holding our nation hostage.
I feel like we are hostages right now and it’s Obama who’s writing the ransom note.

Jennifer Rubin's WaPo opinion piece is spot on. Boehner and Reid had come to an agreement, but BO said no because the agreement would not have gotten him through the 2012 election. The plan would've passed both houses. But the fact that BO ordered Reid to change the plan tells all Americans that BO doesn't care one whit about the debt crisis/economy and its effect on all of us. He cares only about his re-election. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/right-turn/po…
this i didn't understand. so pass it! and let obama actually veto it. are boehner and reid too timid to do that? I would have called O on his threat. would he REALLY veto it if it was on his desk and he had NOTHING else?
Yep…this is all about re-election for Obama. Hell of a president we've got!
BO's been grandstanding for several weeks now, once again pretending to be POTUS, trying to use the debt debate to regain poll points (it's not working). Here's an article that details what he's really been doing. BTW, the question in the headline is not rhetorical! http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/jul/24/c…
I think one could read it as taking the politics out of it – and not having to do this big thing (because we are NOT in an election year, and nothing can get done) – that next year they could argue about what was done – but they wouldn't *also* have to resolve things at the same time with an election pending.
Have to comment on Buck Ofama's speech tonight – it's a three-peat of the last two telepromter speechs, "Our seniors will all suffer if those corporate jet owners and oil companies don't pay up, yada, yada, yada…" I didn't even need to listen to the whole speech, because the teleprompter just played the last two speeches over for the U.S. one mo' time. Ofama is so pathetic.
Anyway, I have always been lukewarm in my support of Boehner, but tonight I have a new-found respect for him – I can tell he is not going to back down on Cut Cap and Balance. Bravo!
and it's absurdity. if we keep on going how we are going, there will be no money left.
and then no social security at all.
and all the very wealthy will leave (because I am SURE they all have escape plans put in place at the moment – and they have the means to do it).
And raising tax RATES will only decrease the total amount of money going to the treasury. they all know it (which is why the Ds did not pass the increases). they are just posturing and electioneering to play to the base. tax rates almost definitely will not be raised.
i mean, those who are in the bottom 50 % of (non) taxpayers should be paying somethin g- that *would* raise revenue. but gd forbid we do that…
EMAIL YOUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVE NOW!!!!
My husband is reporting that the O-bots are crashing the House of Representatives email system. If you appreciate one of the House plans proposed, or simply don’t like Obama’s scare tactics, let them know. If you liked Boehner’s speech, let him know.
Thanks for the link. Done!
Here's a link to an article saying Boehner's web site is crashing because of favorable reactions to his speech after BO's speech! Yay! http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2011/07/winning-s…
Link to transcript of Boehner's speech. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/07/25/transc…
We already know what BO said in his speech…same thing he says in every speech he ever gives! "I, I, I, I, me, me, me, me, etc., etc., etc."
Today Rasmussen has Obama -24 with independent t voters. His internal polls must be terrible. Blaming the tea party memo being pushed by the MSM has not worked but has backfired. Every time Obama makes a debt ceiling speech he put himself further behind the 8-ball. Are any of his advisers telling him this?
Joel Pollak, BigGovernment.com, calls BO's speech tonight a "dog whistle to the left-wing astroturf: "Rather than a sincere attempt at persuasion, it was more likely a dog whistle to the left-wing Astroturf–the signal to begin a carefully staged media campaign in the last days before the debt ceiling deadline, the better to position Obama politically when August 2nd passes–no matter what deal has been reached, or not, by then." Apparently, the Kool-Aid-swilling, brain-dead BO zombies are being called to protest tomorrow via various organizations, such as…quelle surprise…George Soros' MoveOn.org.

OT, but looks like the Operation Fast & Furious scandal (BO's Watergate) is about to explode. Was this Holder DoJ (ATF, FBI, et al) operation arming the Sinaloa drug cartel for war? http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/07/26/atf-ac…
BO is "lame duck President." Gov. Palin's spot-on summary of BO being left behind in the debt debate. http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150246…
That means he wont be taking questions tonight..Carneys statement released around 3 this afternoon frames the Reid compromise as the result of House Republicans obstinacy .The President has been advocating a balanced plan that would reduce our deficit by 4 trillion by making large cuts in domestic and Pentagon spending reforming entitlement programs and closing tax loopholes for corporations millionaires and billionaires. This sort of approach won support from Democrats and Republicans in the Senate but the House Republicans walked away after insisting that the budget be balanced on the backs of seniors and the middle class..Now faced with the my way or the highway short-term approach of the House Republicans Senator Reid has put forward a responsible compromise that cuts spending in a way that protects critical investments and does not harm the economic recovery. All the cuts put forward in this approach were previously agreed to by both parties through the process led by the Vice President. Senator Reid s plan also reduces the deficit more than enough to meet the contrived dollar-for-dollar criteria called for by House Republicans and most importantly it removes the cloud of a possible default from our economy through 2012.
