Drill here…Drill now.

Posted on February 25, 2011 by Bridget // Domestic Policy, Energy, Hillbuzz, White House Policy

Not too far from the truth.

 (h/t Moonbattery)

I drive a lot.  I was nearly floored when I filled up my car yesterday and it cost me almost $50.  That’s a huge jump from just a few months ago and I think it’s going to get worse.  Let’s face it….we almost all have to drive to get around.  I can’t ride a bike to work so I have to fill up my car about every 7-10 days.  That’s a lot of money.  I just read an article about the vast oil reserves in Alaska that would  not only help  solve most of our dependency on foreign oil but it would go a long way in creating new jobs and cutting a big chunk out of our deficit.

(CNSNews.com) – A new study says drilling on Alaska’s Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) could make Alaska the eighth largest oil resource province in the world — ahead of Nigeria, Libya, Russia and Norway.

The report — by the consulting firm Northern Economics and the University of Alaska-Anchorage’s Institute of Social and Economic Research – says that developing Alaska’s OCS could produce almost 10 billion barrels of oil and 15 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, create around 55,000 new jobs and produce $145 billion in new payroll nationally, generating a total of $193 billion in government revenue through the year 2057.

A senior policy advisor with the American Petroleum Institute, the trade group for hundreds of U.S. oil and gas producers, said in a statement about the study that offshore drilling for oil and natural gas can help with the country’s energy and economic needs.

“America will need all forms of energy to get our economy back on track, and that includes oil – we can either produce it here and create more American jobs or import it and create jobs elsewhere,” Richard Ranger said. “The administration and Congress need to adopt an ‘all of the above’ energy approach that leverages our offshore resources in Alaska to create an energy plan for America that boosts, rather than inhibits, our economy.”

About 77 percent of world oil reserves are owned or controlled by national governments and the U.S. currently imports over 60 percent of its crude oil, according to API. The Northern Economics-University of Alaska study estimates that Arctic offshore development could cut U.S. imports by about 9 percent over 35 years.

Crude oil prices in New York broke through the $100-a-barrel threshold on Thursday, with rising prices linked to the unrest in the Middle East, including Libya and its vast oil reserves.

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that U.S. pump prices for regular gasoline jumped 4 cents a gallon overnight to $3.23, an 8-cent-per-gallon increase in the past week and 55 cents more than a year ago.

“Given the current political turmoil in the Middle East and increased demand from a slowly growing economy, it is more essential now than ever before that we develop Alaska’s OCS to increase domestic production,” Ranger said. “Increased OCS production in Alaska would also extend the operating life of the 800-mile Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS), a critical lifeline of domestic energy for America.”

We’ll have to out-shout Greenpeace and the Sierra Club but this seems like a must-do.

Drill here…Drill now

Outshouting Sierra Club and Greenpeace activists shouldn’t be too hard. Most of them are vegans and tire out quickly. I live in the land of beef and oil and come from a long line of roughnecks. We are ready to drill, baby, drill.

I saw a bumper sticker on a big SUV recently ~ only sorry that I didn’t have my camera with me. It said SPILL baby SPILL and was sponsored by Greenpeace. Hello? Why are they driving big SUV’s to start with? From what I’ve read, we have some major oil and natural gas reserves in this country and off shore. Cuba, China, Mexico and other countries from SA are drilling when we won’t/don’t. We need politicians who are willing to step up to the plate to make sure we are taking steps towards energy independence, which will help in many ways.

These green hypocrits want their cheap energy for theri SUV’s but they want it extracted in hird world countries where they don’t have to see the effects on their enviroment. As usual they defeat the cause of a cleaner enviroment because oils and gas production moves to counrties with little or no enviromental regulations and inovation in creating cleaner ways to extract and refine. There is also the issue of how pipe lines are routinely bombed in unstable places like the middle east. We have not built a nuclear power plant in over 30 years in America because of the always knee-jerk, never thoughtful liberal environazis. These people are emotional and reactionary. They should not have any effect on American energy policy. They have f**ked up things enough. send them to irritate the Chinese in Sudan whle they turn Africa to a toxic mining waste land.

But this is the same idiot who doesn’t have to worry about his transportation costs. He knows someone else will pick up the tab. Why would he give a crap? You and I, on the other hand, have to be concerned about all of our daily costs. If this man cared, drilling and developing our own petroleum resources would not be an issue. I know for a fact that if we announced that we are drilling and seeking to produce products for this market, the oil prices will come down. In the mean time, we are only benefiting those who hate us (ME, Ven.).

Heck, western North Dakota and most of eastern Montana, from the mountains to the Dakota border, is sitting on a huge oil reserve, the Bakken/Lewis and Clark formation. And it’s been stated there’s 2 to 10 billion barrels of sweet Texas crude there. But the problem isn’t how much oil we have, it’s how do we get the oil from where we find it to where it needs to be processed? And, we don’t have the refinery capacity to refine all the oil we have if we could get it to a refinery. We haven’t built a refinery in like 25 years or more. Being a native Montanan, it’s time we started using our own natural resources and quit sending billions overseas to people who don’t like us one damn bit. Maybe we need a new hunting season, limit one enviromentalist per license. That last statement is a joke – but it’s time we took control of our own destiny!

I think we need to worry less about how to develop it. Release the land for development by leasing the land to oil companies who are drillers. They already want access. They’re putting their capital at risks. It’s a no brainer. They will make it work and make it financially feasible. It’s how capitalism works – everyone benefits. Also, Yahoo News recently published that new drilling techniques allows development of the oil fields in your area. But, it’s not technology that is consistent with leftist agenda.

I lined less than a mile from one of the largest oil refineries in America in So. Philadelphia. It is right in the middle of a highly populated area but I guess the rational was that it was less than a mile from the US Navy Base on the Delaware River. In states like No. Dakota and Montana there is plenty of land far from people where a refinery would be a god start to energy indepentdence. We could build pipe lines to bring the gasoline weher it needs to go, instead of putting it directly on ships. But enviromentalist care more about the littel creatures in these states than the millions of poeple in Philadelphia who have been suffering the health effects of the Shell oil refinery in Philadelhia for deceades.

A couple of years back, when prices were spiking, lefties has great fun hating on Mr. Bush for the price increases. Apparently he was controlling them for the single purpose of making more $ for his Oil Co pals.

So maybe we should make fun of Obama for raising gas prices for the benefit of whichever groups.

By the way, it will get worse as fuel supplies do their spring switch to the summer blends and as the summer travel season starts.

So true. Any REAL American president would be, right now, telling all of our farmers to plan to farm all of their land this spring, restoring water to the California farmers, ordering companies to find and drill oil, and telling every oil producing country that they will get food from us only as they keep oil prices down. We have more wheat and corn than they do oil, and it is easier to survive without oil than food.

I’m sure Obama’s response to this crisis will be encouraging more exploration and drilling on US territory previously pff limits and a general reduction in bureaucratic and regulatory hurdles. (Ha! Just kidding.) His more likely response will be we all need to make sure our tires are properly inflated (Sadly, not kidding.)

The truth of the matter is liberals aren’t the least bit bothered by high gas prices and even welcome them. (How many time have all of us here heard them yap about one of the many wonders of Europe are their high gas prices?) It is the only way so many of their pie-in the sky renewable energy pipe dreams are economically feasible. The pain this causes to the average consumer just doesn’t matter as the goal of a perfect world is so much more important than the destruction it causes.

Also, remember this. For every penny increase in the cost to consumers, the US government gets a piece of the pie because the taxes are assessed as a percentage on the sale price of gasoline. You don’t think that this crisis has crossed their minds?

I don’t think that’s true. Gas tax is not like sales tax, where higher sales price means an increase in taxes paid. I think it is based on a tax per gallon, which would remain the same.

        I think. Not positive though.

Drilling here is a good idea, but does have some “spin-up” time involved, and isn’t a permanent solution.

The battle cry really ought to be “nuke baby nuke”. Let’s join the modern ages and get multiple nuclear plants up and going – the technology is here, and is safe.

As an additional bonus, we can tell everyone on welfare/extended UE/etc to “go help build these nuke plants, or NO WELFARE FOR YOU!”. Win/win all around!

Or you can support Alberta’s oil sands – in spite of what the environmentalists claim Alberta’s oil sands are ethical – they are a secure source (unless the whack job NDP get into power); they are in a country that follows human rights (maybe too much, but that is a different story); their environmental record is excellent (both in reclaiming used mines and in protecting wildlife – no birds get chopped to death in windmill blades); and workers are paid more than a decent wage ($100,000 plus wages are at the low end).

These cannot be said of middle east oil or oil from Venezuela.

Yes! Drill baby drill is right! It seems like today is the day for the gas prices, at least in my area, to start going up dramatically. Prices in the last few weeks have been ranging between 2.79-2.99 a gallon or so. Went out today to get my nails done and drove past one of the cheaper places in town, price was 3.03 on the way out and 3.15 on the way back. Prices are as high as 3.29 now. Luckily I was able to find a station on the other side of town that was still selling for 3.02 so I stopped a topped off my tank.

For the record the Federal Reserve has increased the monetary base 170% since 2008. What that means is that all this inflation you will be suffering and the creeps on Wall Street rejoicing is cause by Ben Bernanke, Alan Greenspan, George Bush and BHO. This is what you get when you vote for progressive politicians and diversity.

Perhaps I am the only one that had not figured out why the left hated Palin so much. I know they see her as a threat, but this Wisconsin Union thing really crystallized it for me. She can get the Union vote. And that, I think is the big issue. The whole union/political backhanded pay offs gig is up when that happens for dirty repubs as well as union dems. As we can see in Wisconsin, they will do or say anything to get keep those bennies, and negotiating rights. I also think Sarah’s response to those Union employees was spot on. I think this will be the election issue. Press will back the R candidate who will not disturb Unions. Oh, here we go.

Perhaps a research action item for us should be to document the efforts of this administration to drive up the cost of energy.

No drilling permits issued since the oil ban was “lifted”

We are funding drilling in Brazil (Soros business)

Other countries are drilling off Cuba, Mexico is allowed to drill in the Gulf but not us.

We most document the mistakes made on handling of the Gulf Oil Spill…there were many.

I’ve got some articles bookmaked and will try to pull notes together over the weekend.

I live in Nevada and very liberal Shelley Berkley is one of our representatives. She was speaking to a radio show host and part of the conservation, and the questions from callers, had to do with oil prices. One thing she kept repeating is “and the oil companies had record profits and we can’t keep allowing them to have those kinds of profits.” She also implied that they were receiving federal funds to drill, and we shouldn’t let them take those funds, so that’s why they aren’t drilling. What is she talking about? I wanted to call in and ask her that and also to ask her if the oil companies are refusing to drill if they don’t receive these federal subsidies they must be receiving, because maybe they’d drill without them (I’m betting they would). My phone was dead, though, so I couldn’t call.

Lou Dobbs was on Fox Cable News tonight and it looks like he agrees with you. He also talked about the need to do off-shore drilling here at home. Lou Dobbs thinks the prices at the pump are artificially inflated because of the ME crisis and will only get worse this summer. Now is the time for us to wean ourselves off of our dependence on foreign oil sources. It’s obviously a “win-win” situation for us.

According to the leftists loons, drilling for our own oil would not be “environmentally just” nor would it improve the “social justice” we are striving for in Third World countries. The “imperialist” US has no choice but to destroy itself so others can compete in a more just world. sarc/
