He got me! I loved it, too funny,
Actually the speed sign is correct. There are line markers along the road at specific, measured distances; a helicopter can time movement of cars between markers, and voila! speed of vehicle.
Years ago a friend of mine was cited for speeding. Picked up by aircraft while she was zooming across New Mexico. The clincher: she had a bike on a rack on top of her SUV.
Drudge headline:
SECRET DEAL: US AGREES TO TELL RUSSIA UK’S NUKE SECRETS
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/wikileaks/8304654/WikiLeaks-cables-US-agrees-to-tell-Russia-Britains-nuclear-secrets.html#
If this is true, it’s an outrage! Obama has betrayed our closest ally and should be impeached for it now!
What did our senators know?
The Senators ratified this treaty? So…
Did they not read the thing at all?
Or…
Did they read it and agree with doing this?
I’m really not sure which is worse!
And what’s up with Odrama all of a sudden shutting out the reporters from the signing? I thought he was so proud of this stinking pile of %@&$.
I don’t think this was part of the actual treaty–it was a side deal. The Administration swore their were no side deals.
As for our senators, they allowed Obama to push them to ratify during the lameduck and without the negotiation files (which is standard procedure). They were encouraged by millions of Americans to wait and take their time, but they did not listen.
I’m wondering if Obama knew this was going to come out. That might explain the timing. He knew he had to get it signed before this hit the news, but he didn’t want to have to answer questions about the Egyptian mess he and his commie-cronies are neck-deep in the middle of, so he had a closed signing ceremony with still photographers only.
“their” should have been THERE. Sheesh.
There was an outrage on twitter because the White House Press Corp was locked out of the signing of the treaty, and thefore, the contents of the treaty itself.
I agree I do not think the Senators knew about it.
I lost my comment — so abbreviated — call your Senators about speaking on this article.
How did they vote?
http://politics.nytimes.com/congress/votes/111/senate/2/298
Wikileaks causing chaos and distractions…..like the good little socialists that they are.
I’m not so sure Wikileaks is a bad thing. Sometimes sunshine can be a disinfectant. Perhaps you’ve heard of the the 1939 German-Soviet agreement, the one with the secret protocol carving up Poland?
One cannot complain about nasty stuff government elites do in private (well, involving the government, not their personal lives) and also complain when someone outs it. We wouldn’t know about this without WLs now, would we?
What I find funny is how the Brits swooned over Obama during the election; how dumb Americans would be if we didn’t elect him. LOL my lime-eating friends, LOL.
I’m glad you brought this up, else I would have.
Here’s a link to the British report :
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/wikileaks/8304654/WikiLeaks-cables-US-agrees-to-tell-Russia-Britains-nuclear-secrets.html
and here’s one to a blog:

Some nice comments on that blog …
I just emailed my two NC Senators.
I asked Sen Burr (who voted no to ratification) to make a statement about what is going on…was this mentioned as a condition for this treaty?
Conversely, I ask Sen Hagan (Obama/Reid rubberstamp voter on anything) did she know about this betrayal as condition of ratification? Was she expecting a for this vote — i.e. Nebraska kick-off for ObamaCare?
I will call the offices to voice my concerns and speak to the people of NC about the news– on Monday.
Did your Senators vote for ratification? SEE:

Permalink to Sarah’s speech from last night. http://www.viddler.com/explore/PalinTV1/videos/84/
Best line of the night:
“Right here in California some of the nation’s richest and most fertile farmland lays fallow. And the livelihoods of thousands of family farmers are destroyed. And, they’re destroyed because some faceless dim government bureaucrat took away their lifeline, their water. And they claim that it was in order to protect a two inch fish… Now where I come from we call that bait… And there is no need to destroy people’s lives over that bait.”
I’ve heard the bait line before, but it was even better in the context and at this venue. It’s so sad the good people of California are overshadowed at voting time by the illegals and idiots. Kind of like here in Illinois.
I flew in to Chicago Midway a few years ago on my way to a seminar in Wisconsin. Rented a car, tried to find Hugh Hewitt, or any conservative talk, on the radio. All I could find was sports talk (which is a good way of staying uninformed about political things that are really going to bite you in the @$$), and Spanish-language radio!
I was stunned. I’m from Texas – of course we have Spanish radio here. But in Chicago??? Crikey. Made me understand how porous the border actually is.
I wonder if they have a lot of Spanish radio in Ontario, or if they have managed to plug the leak from their side of the northern border?
PS – 890 AM is the station that Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity are on, just in case you’re ever driving in the area again!
Chicago has always had a huge Hispanic population (huge Polish population too, If I remember right there’s more here than in Warsaw!)
I had the same problem in Vegas. Was staying at a place with no FOX news and little else, but finally found Rush. I’m sure the maid was thrilled. They always have the radio tuned to a latin station.
For almost as long as I can remember we have had a huge illegal immigration problem in the Chicago area. My neighborhood was overwhelmed by Mexicans (10 to a house) when I was about 6-7 years old. They brought with them their gangs and drugs (and that was so much fun to have to deal with in high school).
They don’t come to become a part of America, they come for the money, much of which gets sent back to Mexico. And, they don’t assimilate into American culture, they displace it. This is still evident today.
My mother works for the school district and deals with parents on a daily basis. Some Mexican parents will come in and ask to speak to someone in Spanish. When she tells them there isn’t anyone there that speaks Spanish, they get mad, and then speak English. Can’t explain in words how much that pisses me off. If you know English, why the hell aren’t you speaking it?
it is harder for them to reach or stay in Canada.
The border police are very thorough.. I know..trust me… we have been through the 3rd degree on the Canadian border both in a car and in a train!!
When they are found they are booted.
If you had traveled a bit further North to Michigan, you would have found the same…
We have a lot of Hispanics in West/Northern Michigan due the agrarian culture that initially draws many here.
Very recently Feds busted a ring of fake ID suppliers who had set up shop in two empty apartments.
http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2011/01/recent_arrests_show_fake_docum.html
I do need to qualify my statement!! Not all Hispanics are here illegally or engaged in illegal activity. It’s just that the two that were busted happened to be Hispanic.
Ran into a friend at the airport last month. He’s a farmer and always held state wide positions on agricultual committees here in California. He told me that because of the Delta Smelt and the water shut off to protect this little fish, farmers in the Central Valley (formerly known as America’s Bread Basket) have left the valley and relocated their farms in Chile. They were invited there by the President of Chile and have purchased over 500,000 acres of prime farm land. They will now grow their beautiful vegetables there, employ Chilean farm hands, be free of American regulations and export their crops to the USA at a higher profit than they were able to make farming in California. Honestly, can politicians get any more stupid and inept than they are now?

So John “LURCH” Kerry has his eyes of the Secretary of State job?
Truly…I can’t think of anything more scary than that. Okay…maybe Nancy Pelosi as President but that’s about it.
Let’s all pray Hillary stays put for the next 2 years until we get these communists out of government.
http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2011/02/04/kerrys_sharp_eye_on_the_secretary_spot/
Wow, they just got everything in there – he tries to dodge taxes but hey, no biggie! Ezra Klein “gushes” over him!
Don’t miss the Comments section. The man is not well-liked at home.
Hi Bev – but the Lurch could speak French! LOL!! I can speak pig latin along with three languages, but I would hardly say I’m qualified!
It’s not her call but she is towing the line to keep her mouth shut!
Sorry, that was meant for Bev’s comment on Hillary staying a SOS.
I have just read one of the best blog posts since, well, ever:
“The Wrong Lessons Of Iraq
“Don’t ask me about Iraq.
“But I do know something about our collective response to the Iraq war, to the Bush presidency, and to our times, and it says a lot about our cultural psychology. And it helps predict the future.”
http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2007/05/the_wrong_lessons_of_iraq.html
It’s long, from 2007 and it encompasses everything, but it’s absolutely briliant.
Ron Reagan is getting way too much attention, and the foreign media seems to think he has way more clout than he actually does:
http://michellemalkin.com/2011/02/04/overstatement-of-the-day/
The bit that makes me laugh is when he calls Sarah Palin a soap opera. Coming from the man who wrote a book claiming his father had dementia in office, it’s really quite rich.
Talk about projection! He’s a study in mental illness.
Ronnie is a *Fairy tale*
ballerina, a loser and gross
embarrassment to the Reagan
family.
Wonder if maybe Soros is
slipping him some $$ for
the cause.
He was a pain in the arse even when his father was alive. What kind of deviant person slanders his own father after he is gone for political reasons? At least his daughter stopped doing it. Of course his mother is not going to disown him this late in life. He should be ashamed of himself.
A political whore, paid (used)
by the left??
Exactly Patti! Little Ronnie has never accomplished anything on his own…just a useful idiot for liberals.
February, 2011, Aaron Klein, Jerusalem bureau chief for World Net Daily, reports:
The Egyptian government has information a diplomat at the U.S. embassy in Cairo secretly met with a senior leader of the Islamist opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood.
The topic of the meeting was the future of Egypt following the “fall” of President Hosni Mubarak, an Egyptian intelligence official told WND.
The claim comes amid charges from Cairo that the Obama administration has been encouraging the protests rocking Egypt and targeted the rule of Mubarak, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East.
The Egyptian intelligence official told WND his government has information of a meeting that took place between Issam El-Erian, a senior leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, and Frank Wisner, a former U.S. ambassador to Egypt.
The Obama administration dispatched Wisner to Egypt to report to the State Department and White House a general sense of the situation in the embattled country.
The Muslim Brotherhood seeks to spread Islam around the world. Hamas and al-Qaida are violent Brotherhood offshoots.
The latest information is not the first charge by the Egyptian government that the Obama administration has been working with or encouraging the opposition to Mubarak.
The White House has been almost openly championing the unrest in Egypt.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called for an “orderly transition” to democracy in Egypt, where the Muslim Brotherhood is the main opposition group.
Obama reportedly voiced support for an “orderly transition” in Egypt that is responsive to the aspirations of Egyptians in phone calls with foreign leaders, the White House said.
It is not just Obama’s reported contacts with the Muslim Brotherhood and the group’s allies in the Middle East that are concerning.
The Obama administration also has evidenced a working relationship with several U.S.-based Islamist organizations that are listed by the Brotherhood as “likeminded” organizations.
One such group is the Islamic Society of North America, or ISNA, a radical Muslim group that was an unindicted co-conspirator in a scheme to raise money for Hamas.
Other Muslim Brotherhood “likeminded” organizations that have been welcome at the White House include the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, and the Islamic Society of North America.
Little Ronnie is such a pathetic little ass clown. What a disgrace to his father and mother.
Nancy Reagan will be 90 on the 6th of July. Wouldn’t you think this obnoxious jerk could have waited until she is gone to turn loose this bunch of manure? He has no consideration for ANYONE obviously.
I am no Nancy fan, but I believe she deserves respect, not just because she’s a First Lady, but because with all her occasional silliness, I think she meant well and she was devoted to RR. That is her number one thing, always has been. You know he knows that. Like plunging a sword in her heart to talk about his father like this. He must be a miserable little cockroach.
Journolist is back! (It never went away, but now they feel comfortable being loud.)
http://biggovernment.com/dloesch/2011/02/04/journolist-2-0-soros-sites-hold-con-call-to-map-strategy-for-planned-parenthood-defense/
They’re defending Planned Parenthood. Of course they are.
Leftists are the only people who can add the term “boy” to someone yelling “You lie!” at Obama, while dismissing Margaret Sanger’s views as merely “racially insensitive”.
Great point! The Left cringes at Margaret Sanger’s views and hope that they can cover it with enough manure. It doesn’t matter your position on abortion, but you can’t overlook what Sanger really intended to accomplish with abortion!
Real unemployment is at 19.2%. That is, if you count it in the same way that they did during the 1930s.
http://www.gallup.com/poll/125639/Gallup-Daily-Workforce.aspx
Roosevelt was one of the worst Presidents in histoy (and I say “one of” only to hedge my bets), yet the narrative is that he “saved” America.
How can we stop Obama being remembered in the same way?
This is one of the few times that they have reported on what the “true” unemployment was. I think it has been well above 20% for so long and they were afraid to report it. I still say it is well above 20% now – but they will fudge it enough to bring it down to under the 20 mark.
Barky is the worst.
Jimmah is the next worst.
FDR is next
After that you can take your pick
Woodrow Wilson’s Progressive agenda started it all. Picked up by the Italian Facists, then the Nazis, then FDR and so on to today. I’m 71, a History buff and do not B.S.
Our means of communication are light years better than that era. Whether people think he walks on water or not, at some point they are going to look at their lives and unless they are completely stupid, realize that all this economic grief can’t possibly still be coming from GWB anymore. We can hope anyway. It’s not been an avalanche, but I think there definitely has been some awakening going on. By next year, avalanche is quite possible if we keep heading in this direction.
Thank you for the youtube video. Haven’t laughed so hard in a long time. Great relief.
A good article at the American Thinker that mentions Kevin.
http://www.americanthinker.com/2011/01/sarah_palin_combat_veteran.html
Another American Thinker article in which the author outlines what is being unleashed in the Middle East. These have been my fears all along. We have to pray for Israel.
http://www.americanthinker.com/2011/02/obama_well_knows_what_chaos_he.html
Great reading.
It is very scary – and I pray for Israel. They must know that Obama will abandon them at the drop of a hat, and they must ask themselves what he has told their enemies of their military capabilities.
Obama is obviously not keeping his oath of protecting your country. And he is keeping company with enemies of your country, such as Soros.
Can he not be impeached for being a traitor?
As I predicted on this site some months ago. The problem of the future will not be Russia or Georgia or the former Soviet satellites. The problem will be the Middle East.
Watch for the following countries: Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, Syria, Jordan. These are the countries to watch. Forget about N. Korea. Kim Jung Ill is just playing with Obama and he will be playing untill President Palin put him in his place.
The real problem are the countries sorrounding ISRAEL.
I hope Egyptian Army takes control of the situation and keeps the Islamics in check because if MuBarrack leaves(and he will) the situation will be scary.
I completely agree with you. NK is merely a distraction. The ME is where we need to examine because all of those countries will impact the future of this globe. The Suez Canal (formerly Panama Canal – just ask Matthews) appears to be the center point here and if traffic is threatened there, $3 gas will only be a pipe dream!
You are spot on! Glenn Beck rarely has guests on his show, however, the past couple of days he has had an American Muslim PhD and a couple others who specialize in the middle east economies and religions. They all pretty much agreed on the domino effect of how it would play as each country would begin to fall upon each uprising with Saudi Arabia being left with Mecca the ‘prize’ and Israel with Jerusalem, the other.
Then Europe will be so deeply affected due to the large populations of each separate muslim population that resides in each of their countries, not to mention syrocketing oil, commodities, food shortages, falling currencies….need we add anymore?
OMG, I just read this, I get more scared every single day…
Read the comments… WOWSER

Lots on Reagan at NRO, great pics, videos, tributes. Enjoy!
oh, and make sure to read The Corner too, scroll down there are many writers posting there…here’s one:
Last night at the Reagan Ranch, Sarah Palin said this is our time for choosing — again. Marco Rubio channels that same message in his on-the-Senate-record Reagan remembrance:
I am proud to honor Ronald Reagan on the 100th anniversary of his birth. President Reagan was a man who inspired millions of Americans to serve their country and fulfill its promise as the shining city on a hill. His genial demeanor, resilience, no-nonsense approach to governing and rock solid principles attracted flocks of young Americans to the Republican Party, and I am proud to include myself in that number.
I was fortunate to have grown up and come of age politically just as President Reagan was in office. His words and deeds inspired our entire country to take pride in our patriotic values and the free market principles that have made America exceptional. He also comforted us during moments of national tragedy. And his willingness to speak out against communism – as both a bankrupt economic system and an immoral violation of human dignity – was a ray of sunlight to those living in its darkness.
I will never forget my parents’ reaction the day the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. Having lost their country to Fidel Castro’s Communism, they had spent 30 years divided from their homeland, friends, and relatives — just as the Wall had done to millions in Europe.
Especially for my parents’ generation of Cuban exiles, whose hopes and dreams were shattered by Communism, the Wall’s fall was an historic event they questioned would ever come. It was a day of celebration and rekindled hope that all lands within Communism’s grip would soon be free as well. Ronald Reagan helped bring about the change that made Communism’s fall possible.
By joining with other world leaders like Pope John Paul II, he seized the opportunity to highlight Communism’s failures. In doing so, he helped make millions of oppressed people more self-aware of their intrinsic dignity, more confident that their pursuit of freedom was justified, and more hopeful that they were not alone in their struggles.
In commemorating Ronald Reagan’s 100th birthday, we also remember the work that remains to be done to tear down other oppressive walls that still stand. America’s responsibilities in this effort cannot be underestimated.
Economically, we cannot allow Washington’s borrow-and-spend binges to diminish our free enterprise system, nor can we allow our debt to make our commitment to freedom and human rights subservient to our debt holders.
Militarily, as Ronald Reagan said, “Of the four wars in my lifetime, none came about because the U.S. was too strong.” A free and secure world requires a strong America led by our brave men and women in uniform. America’s commitment to the defense of our allies should never waver. Diplomatically, we must not confuse a desire for security and the promotion of democratic values as mutually exclusive goals.
The United States and the world owe a great debt to Ronald Reagan for his decisive leadership, adherence to conservative principles and inspiring example during a tumultuous period. And we owe a special debt of gratitude to his wife Nancy for her efforts to keep his memory and legacy alive.
Now the question before us is whether we are going to do as Ronald Reagan did and ensure that future generations can inherit the single greatest society in all of human history. I, for one, am fully committed to honoring Ronald Reagan’s legacy by standing up for the principles that defined him and have made America exceptional for more than two centuries.
Oh, look. Now the government is worried about the environmental impact of spilled milk…
http://hotair.com/archives/2011/02/05/epa-to-regulate-dairy-milk-spills-as-per-oil-spills/comment-page-1/#comment-4298489
No. Really. SPILLED MILK!
They are seriously out of control.
O/T-On my Facebook we are staring a Revolution/Boycott!
There is a movement of a Peaceful Civil Revolution for SuperBowl Sunday to get on the DO NOT WATCH LIST of the interview on Fox News of O’Reilly interviewing Obama. Together, we can make this the lowest rated O’Reilly show ever, LOL!! You can watch the interview on youtube or HULA TV later, but would that not kick the hell out of O’s EGO, ROFL!!
Some Palin supporters are starting to sound disillusioned as Sarah announces more paid speeches without declaring her run for president. She is booked for speeches all the way to May. Even her staunchest supporters were so enthusiastic as she made stops for her books tours in Michigan, Iowa and South Carolina. Now some of these same strong supporters(many of them bloging in the C4P site) are saying stuff like “I support Sarah in whatever she decides to do”. These people are not so sure of her running for president anymore. As I predicted a couple of months ago, if Sarah does not announces by February, many of her supporters would be looking somewhere else.
As of now(5 February) There is no announcement of traveling abroad, not even a presidential exploratory committee.
Is Sarah Palin running for president? The answer is YES! Sarah knows that for a person to be a viable candidate for president she needs tons of money. She needs to “milk” all the paid speeches she can and all the Fox News contributor’s salary she can before she formally announces. After she announces, Fox News and paid speeches will need to STOP.
Sarah is playing her game. She does not needs name recognition, she can wait until summer to announce. Unlike Obama who did not have any name recognition in 2007 and Hillary who thought the nomination and the presidency was in the bag, they both announced early in 2007.
Sarah Palin loves this country and hates Obama’s policies. She loves her supporters and she will announce soon. It will be between March and June. She will not let the Tea Party and the conservative movement disappear or be disbanded. She will take the helms.
She is sending signs that she is running for president since 2009. Get ready for a formal announcement within the next 3 months.

Gosh, all this violent rhetoric could cause some damage, amirite? Or is that just for the non existent equivalents on the right?
More on Egypt. They are sick puppies:
“Nine out of ten Egyptian women suffer genital mutilation. US President Barack Obama said Jan. 29, “The right to peaceful assembly and association, the right to free speech, and the ability to determine their own destiny … are human rights. And the United States will stand up for them everywhere.”
“Does Obama think that genital mutilation is a human rights violation? To expect Egypt to leap from the intimate violence of traditional society to the full rights of a modern democracy seems whimsical.”
http://pajamasmedia.com/instapundit/114438/
I cannot understand how the feminists square with what the muslims do to their women. There is no discussion of this, and these poor women are maimed for the rest of their lives, all because they might somehow enjoy some aspect of their sex. Islam is completely replete with sickos. If you’re a moderate, you need to speak out. All it takes is for the 90% (or more or less) to stay silent for the very small minority segment to control the rest of our lives!

In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, we’re preparing for President Obama’s visit to Marquette. He’s interested in how Northern Michigan University and other Yooper institutions have used technology for education in the sparsely-populated areas. Some of my Republican relatives still live there. My oldest uncle e-mailed me the news and said, “Marquette is about as influential as Elko, Nevada.” So the general feeling is that this is his chance to leave Washington without going to another country. (Although you could say that “Yooperland” is a country unto itself.)

I believe the far left knows its days are numbered and are throwing it all in the fan…including the Middle East. Obama’s poll numbers are going south again today and with good reason. Since the Republicans took congress we have had one crisis after another…in one month’s time. Obama is of consequence…I think they know he will be une-electable and have nothing to lose.
Despite the spin on the alphabet state run media…the left knows it’s going down and they want to drag everybody they can with them.
Ulstermann has another “insider” scoop on

I am comforted by the fact that local governments are so efficient at imposing areawide blackouts.
Even my liberal leaning brother and SIL were creeped out by it and that is saying alot, if you knew them…
I liked many parts of Gov. Palin’s
speech last night.
My favorite:
“There’s a whole army of patriotic

country ready to stand up and to
speak out in defense of liberty,
and these Davids aren’t afraid to
tell Goliath “don’t tread on me.”

The Sharon K Pacheco Foundation
I just wrote a note to this foundation expressing my dismay that they let the Left’s small group of professional thugs intimidate them.
The “Community Organizer” thugs won on silencing Bristol at that university in St.Louis too. They are on a roll now.
I just sent the foundation a note through their website regarding my feelings about them canceling Palin. As the mom of a United States Marine, I am appalled at the cowardice of this group. Our sons and daughters are at the forefront to protect our freedoms and this shell of a group displays the most profound backpedaling I have ever seen.
Please, go to the link of the foundation’s website and respectfully express your opinion.

Fyi…
Hmmmmm………. Interesting that date would be when the 2012 primaries have basically already wrapped up……
“SEC rule likely to trigger Facebook IPO in 2012″
“SAN FRANCISCO – …..Facebook will be legally required to begin sharing more information about its finances and strategy by April 2012, according to documents distributed to prospective shareholders……..
The owner of the world’s largest Internet social network, privately held since it started in a Harvard University dorm room SEVEN YEARS AGO, will be forced to open its books because it expects to have more than 500 shareholders at some point this year, according to a person who has reviewed the documents handed out Thursday. The person asked not to be identified because the documents are only being given to an elite group selected to buy a stake in Facebook through a fund packaged by the company’s newest investor, Goldman Sachs Group Inc….”
GOLDEN SACKS AGAIN???? Zuckerman has gone on the recorde repeatedly at least since 2008 basically saying he doesn’t care about profits…..what does he care about? Electing and Re-Electing Obama?
Didn’t Facebook shut down lots of the Hillary fan pages on Facebook in the 2008 primaries by Facebook? I remember those reports.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110107/ap_on_re_us/us_facebook_investors
Uh Oh.
Is FaceBook just a Fifth Column of the Democrat Party? From last month’s Wall Street Journal…
“Asked in a “60 Minutes” interview last month (DEC. 2010) whether Facebook would ever have an IPO, CEO Mark Zuckerberg answered, “maybe.” Assuming regulators don’t force the issue, Facebook could settle in as a permanent IPO holdout.
Two of the primary motivations for a young company to go public–cashing out early investors and tapping money to expand– seem to be mostly absent for Facebook. Thanks to emerging private exchanges, Facebook shareholders can cash out when they want to, albeit with limits. Uh Oh. Is FaceBook just a Fifth Column of the Democrat Party? From last month’s Wall Street Journal… ” Asked in a “60 Minutes” interview last month (DEC.
And because of an eager queue of investors, Facebook has ready access to money it needs to add engineers, buy other companies or roll out new services….

Sarah Palin and the Battle for Feminism
The ex-governor and her Mama Grizzlies argue that the real women’s issue is our country’s fiscal future.
“When Sarah Palin took the podium in St. Paul to accept her nomination for the vice presidency in September 2008, calm and collected feminists might have recalled the old saw: Be careful what you wish for. Here she was, an ambitious political woman with the sort of egalitarian marriage that would put the Swedes to shame. Here she was, a charismatic, working-class heroine who oozed folksy provincialism with the naturalness of Lyndon Johnson in the same breath as she cheered her Hillary Clintonesque assault on the “glass ceiling.” Yes, here she was—clinging to her guns, her religion, and her babies, and saying, and apparently believing, all the wrong things.
But “calm and collected” are not the words that come to mind to describe the feminist response to the governor from Alaska. The young feminist Jessica Grose, writing on the popular website Jezebel just after the Republican convention, was—well, we’ll let her describe it: “When Palin spoke on Wednesday night, my head almost exploded from the incandescent anger boiling in my skull. . . . What I feel for her privately could be described as violent, nay, murderous, rage.” Grose’s readers left more than 700 comments, according to the late New York Sun, including one from a reader who wanted to “vomit with rage.” Other haters damned Palin as a traitor to her sex or an “insult to women,” as Judith Warner spat in the New York Times. “Turncoat bitch!” the comedian Sandra Bernhard railed in a performance caught on YouTube. “You whore in your cheap fucking . . . cheap-ass plastic glasses and your hair up!” Writing on a Washington Post blog, Wendy Doniger, a Hinduism specialist at the University of Chicago Divinity School, topped them all: Palin’s “greatest hypocrisy is in her pretense that she is a woman.”
However excessive their frothing, feminists had good reason to be in panic mode. Palin may have lost her bid to become vice president; she may have failed to appeal to such prominent conservatives as Peggy Noonan, George Will, and Karl Rove, as well as to lesser right-of-center mortals like this writer; but by leading a wave of new conservative women into the fray, she has changed feminism forever. In fact, this new generation of conservative politicas—having caught, skinned, and gutted liberal feminism as if it were one of Palin’s Alaskan salmon—is transforming the very meaning of a women’s movement.
…..”
Rather good opinion piece I thought, but please everyone read all of it – unlike the last Congress and the 2700 plus pages of the Barry Obama HealthCare Bill.
