Chicago Vocabulary Lesson of the Day: What's an "Obama-hater"?
You might find this interesting. We just ran into our friend Emily, someone who we met after the election and who we’ve never talked politics with. She was a bartender at an event one of us produced a few months ago, and we assumed she was a liberal O-bot (because of how she dresses, the neighborhood she lives in, and everything else that typically screams LIBERAL in this town).
Well, we were talking today and she told us that she was bartending at a restaurant she works at and she carded two young black guys who came in, and who started trouble from the moment they walked through the door. Emily could tell they were underaged, so she pressed for the ID and one of them said, “Oh, you dumb white bitch, you’re just hasseling us ’cause you’re an Obama-hater.”
Emily told them that, no, she was hasseling them because they were jerks, appeared underaged, and that it was City, State, and Federal law to hassel minors in bars.
They left in a huff and puff, with more shouts of “white bitch” and something about it being “the Black House now, bitch”.
We’d never heard the term “Obama-hater” before, but apparently it’s working its way through the slang process here in Chicago. It’s race-baiting, essentially, where a year or two ago the teens would have said, “You just won’t serve us because we’re black”, but now they invoke Dr. Utopia’s name as shorthand.
We could analyze this for paragraphs, but won’t, though it is interesting on a lot of levels: is it an attempt to legitimize their race-baiting, Henry Gates style, by using the POTUS’ name…is it an attempt to try to bully someone, because they act like they have the might of the White (or Black) House behind them…just how much damage will this nonsense do to Dr. Utopia, in the long run, as more and more people hear the “Obama-hater” bit and start to get sick of all the race-baiting done by Dr. Utopia’s most ardent supporters and friends in this the post-racial Golden Age of Hope, Change, and Rainbow Singing Unicorns?
Emily has a Master’s degree in public policy and, until about 8 months ago, used to have a high-paying job at a consulting firm. She hasn’t been able to find work despite looking, applying, and interviewing every day. Back to bartending (for the first time since grad school), just to be able to pay her rent and keep a roof over her head, Emily told us “I’m still waiting for all the things Obama promised us. I didn’t vote, because I didn’t like Obama and I would never vote Republican, but I wanted Hillary Clinton to be president because she keeps her word and doesn’t promise things she can’t deliver. But, if you ask where all the promises are, where is all the hope and why things haven’t gotten better, you get called a racist for trying to hold this man to everything he lied about on the campaign trail”.
When we don’t seek out stories like this…when people just out of the blue say this stuff to us…we realize the White House is in bigger trouble than any of us can probably imagine. ESPECIALLY if young black thugs and their emulators take this “Obama-hater” crap nationwide, and Middle America catches wind of it.
The Henry Gates/stupid police business got people to wakeup, and to remember the antics of another close friend of the Utopias, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Dr. Utopia needs to be careful there aren’t any more of these episodes…because a backlash could certainly come.
Emily said, “You know, people like that make me think I might actually vote Republican next time if it’s not someone too terrible just to teach those punks a lesson and kick Obama out of the White House”.
Hope for that change!

I never hate anybody. Sometimes its difficult with politicians, but you have to remember that people supported them, voted them into office. I can’t hate the politician without hating all the people that put them into office and that’s just too much hate to carry around. Besides, in America I don’t think we should be hating on anybody. If you live in third world country and have to watch your children starve to death or your village get blown up, then some hatred might be understandable. It’s always bothered me that people are so quick to hate in this country, I mean they hate somebody’s shoes, they hate a restaurant, they hate their job…stop it already. For the most part, we got it too good in America to engage in hate.
Sadly what your friend Emily had to deal with is something I’ve heard from other people, too. Geesh, just what little I went thru at our local Dem caucus way back during the primary was enough to turn me off to the Dem party.
LOL, by the way, a bartender carded me a couple of weeks ago. Yep, I’m senselessly posting just to brag about it. : )

This is change alright. obama has turned race relations back so many years. Is this what he wanted?
Possibly. He sure knows how to piss people off when it comes to racial issues. If he is half as smart as his followers claim he would have more sense than to say some of the crap that he says.

This nonsense isn’t a Chicago phenomenon, it’s been happening on the left coast since January 20, 2009 … absolutely the reason I no longer shop in malls. Hateful, ill-mannered, ill-bred, uneducated thugs – who have never accomplished anything positive in their lives – travel in packs with the obvious intent to disrupt the lives of everyone with whom they come in contact. Everyone who doesn’t look just like them, that is. A monster is in the process of being created and it’s growing bigger by the day. Quite frightening.
Every black person I have ever known personally has been extremely pleasant, despite most of them being “Obama-lovers”.
Then again, I don’t associate with riff-raff. Yet I have certainly encountered more white riff-raff than riff-raff of any other skin color.
Anyway… so much for the post-racial candidate huh?
EricP: Count your blessings, because your experiences have been much more positive than mine. Perhaps I’m easy pickings because I’m old and defenseless, but too many bad things are happening in L.A. malls, movie theaters and parking lots, happening to women in particular. It saddens me deeply to say, racial bias is involved 99 times out of 100, because some of the perps are actually apprehended.
Now it just so happens that I work with a couple dozen people whose pigmentation is much darker than my own. My boss for one. For her I’d walk through fire and she knows it. With regard to the rest: is “every one extremely pleasant?” Not by a long shot. They’re people just like you and me, people with all of the hangups, prejudices, fears, worries and preconceptions as everybody else. Personally, I’ve never known any one group to be “always extremely” anything, but I don’t get out much. People are who they are. The task is to figure out a way to get along with all the layers. Do I know white riff-raff? Yep, several are relatives. Trust me when I tell you that black folks have riff-raff they’re not so crazy about, either. As does my Hispanic son-in-law’s family … and my Korean daughter-in-law’s folks. Look, either a person has character, honor and ethics or they don’t. They can be turquoise for all I care, and that includes the president. All I ask of a president is that he or she not be hellbent on leading this country down the road to ruin which, apparently, this president is. Were the president a blue-eyed towhead with the identical agenda as the guy cavorting on Martha’s Vineyard, I’d dislike it every bit as much.
Well I live in a relatively small town (< 10000 people) so, thankfully, most of the people here are fairly pleasant. But I'm happy to say that, quite honestly, the average black person I interact with is actually nicer and more polite than the average white person I interact with.
However, I am aware of the national statistics, and the localized and even national gang problems. As you say, I am lucky for the experiences I've had.
Nothing about being an O hater, but a weird story just the same. A friend of mine at work is black, and we talk about everything except politics. The other day he told me he thought one of our bosses was a racist. He said he showed him a picture of his girlfriend and her sister, and the boss said, I’m not attracted to black women”. My friend said “he’s a racist for saying that, and he’d better stop acting better than us blacks because we’re in charge now” Holly crap!! I really dig and respected this guy. I was shocked. I had never thought about life that way, ya know, being in charge? So now that the president is biracial all the whites are out of power? I wanted to ask him about it, but just kinda shook my head and said something about not everyone is attracted to everyone, and it’s ok. He is biracial so I just don’t get it. He sounded racist to me, not the boss. Oh well, I’ve been wrong before, so who knows.

Ditto. Redheaded men freak me out. And I’m sure there are men who are repulsed by my looks, so I guess all things are even.
This racial crap has been going on since Utopia stepped into the race. I will NEVER forget or forgive the B.S. that happened at my Dem caucus or at caucuses countrywide.
Many of us said this two years ago: Barack Obama will set race relations back by 50 years. Shame on him!

Rude, not racist. There are black men not attracted to black women. White women not attracted to white men. Jewish men attracted only to Asian women, and all variations thereof.
The boss is an insensitive jerk. He’s entitled to his personal attractions and repulsions, as are we all. Those things are subjective. Beyond explanation.
And we’re entitled to think he’s a boorish for having expressed his preference instead of being polite and diplomatic.

The boss doesn’t seem racist to me. He is a lout for sure. He just stated he wasn’t attracted to black women when asked. But what do I know, I am supposedly racist too. We Hillary supporters all were called that over and over.

He’s actually a very nice guy we’ve run into once or twice around Chicago. What’s interesting is that he’s a Daley guy…and you would think that no machine candidate would run against Giannoulias, who is Dr. Utopia’s basketball buddy…but the White House signaled it was not going to help Giannoulias and seems to have screwed him over. Only time will tell on that.
Hoffman could be a way to split votes between him and Giannoulias so that Cheryle Jackson, who is black, becomes the nominee. Jackson is not a nice woman, very rude, and is president of the Urban League. She is not especially liked in the black community though, which supports Roland Burris (as do we), but blacks will race-vote here in Chicago for whomever the black candidate is and that would be Jackson. It’s then up to the rest of the state, which has never heard of Hoffman but knows Giannoulias is the Treasurer. We don’t believe most of the state knows how corrupt Giannoulias is.
BUT, before Dr. Utopia that seat was held by popular Peter Fitzgerald…and Hoffman has Fitz feel to him…maybe he could overcome the name recognition problem by tying into that residual good will for Fitz, who many hoped would return to the Senate in 2010.
Giannoulias posters are ALL OVER Andersonville…but that’s the only place we’ve seen them so far. Broadway Bank is up that way, so it feels like businesses are getting leaned on by the shady types that bank there to put his signs up, lest anything bad happen to their businesses. It’s just odd we don’t see those signs anywhere else.
And invoking the name of Obama means you can call women “b**ch”. No change there.
My company is about as liberal as they come and bends over backwards to be fair and balanced, even overly forviging shall we say to employees who are minorities, especially people of color. Several employees, if they had been white, would have been fired for certain obvious infractions of our employee manual, but this liberal white company won’t touch this with a ten foot pole.
Right after Obama’s election, we hired a black woman who seemed nice enough on the surface. It soon became apparent she was not very competent in her field and was just not getting the job done. Very soon there were charges of racism against our company by her and believe it or not, she filed a discrimination suit against our company, also naming several individuals in it, claiming they were racists (these individuals actually had nothing to do with her but for some reason she felt they were racists and that she could sue them). Needless to say it was shocking and stunning as there was no discrimination against her, but the opposite, those who worked with her were very patient with her lack of skills and her being out so much with no warning. Why did she do this? Because she felt she could. I believe this is like the Jessee Jackson syndrone – he used to go to corporations and shake them down for money based on charges of discrimination. Who knows? Maybe there were hundreds if not thousands of similar discrimination suits filed right after Obama became president. Suddenly many blacks feel empowered and figure they will stick it to the white people any way they can. In this case, as probably in many of the cases, the charges are trumped up and bogus, which is detrimental to those who are actually discriminated against.
We know a black guy who proudly tells anyone who will listen that he never pays for food at restaurants. He says when he comes in, he starts complaining that they only made him wait because he is black, and then when he’s seated, he complains they put him too near the kitchen because he is black, or too near the front because he is black, or too near the middle because he is black, whether any of that made sense or not. And he says he eats half of whatever he orders and then invents something wrong with it — send it back, and then eats half of the new dish they bring out, before he finds something wrong with that too (notice, he’s now eaten a full meal). Then, he claims, loudly, that the kitchen is messing with his food because he is black…and he gets into Henry Gates/Al Sharpton/Jesse Jackson mode and tries to make a big scene until the management just comps the meal.
This guy says the scam doesn’t work in Mexican or Asian restaurants, owned locally, but only at chain restaurants or restaurants that don’t seem to want the attention he’s bringing, either because they are really busy or the owners/managers live in terror of being called racists.
It’s funny, but the reason he told us this was because there was a group of us talking about bad service somewhere and he chimed in, “Well, not that any of you can, but I would have just said it was racism and got the whole meal free…do it all the time”.
I would never have thought that someone could be so devious to do this. I believe there are always consequences. We don’t know what those consequences are, but I trust that there will be.
When you think about it, it’s no different than what the race-baiters did in this election (and continue to do any chance they get). They knew they could get away with “if you don’t vote for Obama, if you don’t like Obama, you’re a racist”, and it worked!!!! Yes, people are that devious and if the shoe fits someone named Barack Obama, well so it does!!!

Most AA aren’t used to having much. So when they get it, they don’t know what to do with it. Some count their blessings, some give back to the community, and others put on obnoxious displays of wealth or perceived prestige (see MTV Cribs and most rap videos). These fools, flush with power and little common sense run amok not realizing that it’s all temporary.
I fear that when the white community has had enough of the black community calling them racists, bigots and what have you, they’ll get over their white guilt and the b(l)acklash will make the black community think that it’s back in the 70′s. Al thanks to O-dumbass and his supporters.
