HillBuzz Open Thread: Monday December 12th, 2011

[ NOTE: The above is a clip from the old TV show "What's My Line?", featuring a segment where a panel of New York based celebrities tried to guess the name of a famous person by asking simple questions.  I have no doubt if this show was recast today that there would be few in the current crop of media talking heads who could guess ANYONE'S identity using little questions like this.  Especially not artists like Salvador Dali. Can you imagine the likes of Ryan Seacrest or Kathy Lee Gifford being able to guess a famous artist using questions, or even knowing who that person is if directly told?]

Today in History:

2000 – The United States Supreme Court releases its decision in Bush v. Gore Do you remember where you were when the announcement came down? I remember it being very late at night, and there were swarms of reporters and random people in suits on the steps of the SCOTUS building; and then there was a lot of running and people throwing papers in the air. I assume those papers had the information from the court on them and someone was being helpful and getting the info to as many people as possible.  I don’t think many of them had cell phones, and texting was not around then, so I remember it being this big clamor for the information.  Nothing like this would happen today. So much has changed in just 11 years.

1991 – Russian Federation gains independence from the USSR. Vladimir Putin still wants to rebuild the Russian Empire and make himself a neo-Tsar.  Looks like that’s going to be harder than he thought.

1925 – The Majlis of Iran votes to crown Reza Khan as the new Shah of Persia. I wonder what would have happened if they had made a better choice than Reza Khan and picked someone who was not so tone deaf and stupid to be the Shah.  Would that other man, whomever he would have been, had sense enough to see the Islamist threat coming that Reza ignored (or was too foolish to see)? Most people in Iran hate Islam.  Did you know that?  There are a lot of Persians here in Chicago and sometimes you can hear them talk about this at a Persian restaurant here; Islam has brought nothing but suffering and destruction to Iran, since Islam is a militarized tool of the Arabs who swept through Persia and still seek to destroy all of its treasures (since anything that pre-dates Islam is a threat to Islam).  Watch the same thing to happen to Egypt, where Islamists plan on pulling down the pyramids and destroying the Great Sphinx of Giza once they have control over that country like they have control of Iran.  “Religion of Peace”?  More like “plague on humanity and bane of antiquities”.

1917 – In Nebraska, Father Edward J. Flanagan founds Boys Town as a farm village for wayward boys. Every once in a while, someone sends HB hatemail angry that the gay neighborhood here in Chicago is called “Boystown”.  Actually, the gay neighborhoods of any city that has a strip of gay bars in it (like in Los Angeles) is called “Boystown” by default, if there isn’t already a catchy name for the gay ‘hood (such as The Village in New York or the Marais in Paris). On Hulu, there’s a PSA that runs for “Boys’ Town” that always sounds so strange to me when it plays between shows I watch, since “Boystown” means something very different to me because of where I live.  This is just an example of straight people having a 180 degree reaction apart from me on something because of the gay community taking a word and repurposing it to describe something unique in gay circles.

1911 – King George V of the United Kingdom and Mary of Teck are enthroned as Emperor and Empress of India. Quick: how many Emperors are left in the world?  Hint: Barack Obama has bowed to all of them since taking office as President.

1870 – Joseph H. Rainey of South Carolina becomes the second black U.S. congressman, the first one being Hiram Revels. I can honestly only think of one black member of Congress whom I respect and support:  and that’s Allen West.  Why doesn’t the Republican Party actively seek to develop black conservatives and elect them to Congress?  Because it’s the Party of Stupid, I know, but a black conservative should be run against every black Democrat in Congress, starting with the most vile members of the Congressional Black Caucus such as John Lewis and James Clyburne.  Herman Cain, for all of his faults as a candidate, could beat John Lewis for a seat in Congress.  But the Republicans are too stupid to get behind him and encourage his run.  Idiots.

What’s going on in your part of the country today?

What are the big stories going to be this week, in your opinion?

[ NOTE: The above is a clip from the old TV show "What's My Line?" in a segment where a panel of celebrities had to guess the identity of a famous person by asking him questions. In this clip they had to guess who Frank Lloyd Wright was. I think this is interesting because there are so many Lloyd Wright building in Chicago but few people remember what he sounded like. ]

Today in History:

2008 – After critical failures in the US financial system began to build up after mid-September, the Dow Jones Industrial Average reaches its lowest level since 1997. That was the October Surprise that George Soros rigged in September 2008 to secure the presidency for Barack Obama; September 2008 was also when John McCain just gave up and pretty much abandoned his campaign. Do you honestly think Willard Mittens Romneycare won’t just give up in 2012 when Soros does something like this again if the Cocktail Party GOP Establishment succeeds in making Romneycare the “it’s his turn” nominee.

2001 – In Washington, D.C., U.S. President George W. Bush dedicates the United States Department of Justice headquarters building as the Robert F. Kennedy Justice Building, honoring the late Robert F. Kennedy on what would have been his 76th birthday. Don’t hold your breathe for a Ted Kennedy School of Driving and/or Submarine Piloting to be dedicated any time soon.

1992 – In England, a fire breaks out in Windsor Castle, badly damaging the castle and causing over £50 million worth of damage. Meanwhile, here in 2011, the entire country’s essentially burning down around us while the big queen in the White House does absolutely nothing to salvage our economy (and hint, I’m not talking ’bout Michelle).

1947 – The Princess Elizabeth marries Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten at Westminster Abbey in London. Meanwhile, here in the US, without a set Head of State to maintain traditions over many years, we’re left to the whims of fate regarding whoever happens to be in the White House at the time serving as both Head of State and Head of Government in this country.  Here’s hoping the 45th President and First Lady who take over in 2013 are people who are prepared to assume these important duties and carry them out always with dignity.

1789 – New Jersey becomes the first U.S. state to ratify the Bill of Rights. And to think, they managed that without any help whatsoever from Snooki.

What’s going on in your part of the country?

What are the big stories people you know are talking about?

[ NOTE:  The above is a clip from the old TV show "What's My Line?", where a panel of celebrities must deduce the identity of a famous person by asking questions.  It's fun to listen to the polite and intelligent way these people all spoke and how clever they were in questioning these stars ]

Today in History:

1997 – Ramzi Yousef is found guilty of masterminding the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Interesting.  A Muslim male between the ages of 17-41 you say?  No pattern here!

1990 – Tim Berners-Lee publishes a formal proposal for the World Wide Web. Whatever. Everyone knows he cribbed it from Al Gore.

1990 – Crown Prince Akihito is formally installed as Emperor Akihito of Japan, becoming the 125th Japanese monarch. And thus was set in motion Barack Hussein Obama’s 20-year dream of bowing before an Emperor at some point in the future.

1982 – In the Soviet Union, Yuri Andropov becomes the general secretary of the Soviet Communist Party‘s Central Committee, succeeding Leonid I. Brezhnev. Blink and you would have missed him!

1958 – A team of rock climbers led by Warren Harding completes the first ascent of The Nose on El Capitan in Yosemite Valley. This was ANOTHER Warren Harding, not a time-traveling, death-defying, former US President.

[ NOTE: The video above is from the old TV show "What's My Line?", where a panel of celebrities had to guess a famous person's identity by asking a series of questions.  It's sad that Elizabeth Taylor is gone.  She was a marvelously kind woman who was so good to so many...and who was sadly remembered for too long for being sick and in a wheelchair.  It's nice to look back on her in all her glory. ]

Today in History:

2008 – RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) sets sail on her final voyage to Dubai. This was supposed to be turned into a hotel like the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, but because Dubai’s economy collapsed that never happened. It’s weird, but just a few short years ago all the travel magazines and publications like TIME and Vanity Fair or whatever were claiming Dubai would become this futuristic wonderland with all sorts of amazements…but anyone who has ever studied the people who actually live in Dubai knew that would never happen.

2004 – The Palestine Liberation Organization confirms the death of Yasser Arafat from unidentified causes. Mahmoud Abbas is elected chairman of the PLO minutes later. Honest to goodness, there are pictures of Yasser Arafat hanging in Chicago Public Schools like he’s a hero.  It’s beyond sick.

1993 – A sculpture honoring women who served in the Vietnam War is dedicated at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Have you ever been there and seen it in person?  It’s incredible.

1940 – World War II: Battle of Taranto – The Royal Navy launches the first aircraft carrier strike in history, on the Italian fleet at Taranto. Whenever I think of aircraft carriers, I think of the giant G.I. Joe aircraft carrier playset from the 80s that I obsessively wanted one Christmas but was too expensive to get…and it was like this mythical thing always hearing that somebody’s friend’s cousins’ neighbor had it, but I never saw one in the flesh (or, plastic, as the case may be).

oday I think I want to learn why Route 66 faded away.  It goes right through the middle of Chicago, you know.  Someday, I think it would be fun to drive it.  Has anyone done that?

What’s going on in your part of the country today?

What, in your opinion, was the big story from this week?

[ Note: the above is a clip from the old TV show "What's My Line?", where a panel of celebrities attempts to identify a famous person by asking him questions.  Here, the panel had to guess the identity of Liberace...while somehow missing the fact that he's gay.  Hilarious.  You might think it's odd now, but legions of female fans insisted until Liberace died that he was straight...and only after he died did they have to admit they were wrong. ]

Today in History:

2002 – Iran bans advertising of United States products. We should retaliate likewise and ban all Iranian products, if they ever have any.

2000 – Hillary Rodham Clinton is elected to the United States Senate, becoming the first former First Lady to win public office in the United States, although actually she still was the First Lady. The Democrat Party still does not realize the damage it did to itself by pushing Hillary Clinton aside in favor of Obama in 2008. Hillary Clinton would be beginning her re-election campaign now, and Democrats would have most likely had two terms in office with her as President (since I imagine Hillary would have wiped the floor with Mittens Romney — the Republican “it’s his turn candidate” — next year).  If Democrats were smart, they would have had Obama be Hillary’s VP in 2008…and the could have ran him in 2016, for three full terms in power.  Instead, the DNC allowed the Left to call the shots and very likely the Democrat Party as we knew it was destroyed for good and will probably never recover.  Great work, Donna Brazile!

1994 – WXYC, the student radio station of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, provides the world’s first internet radio broadcast. Speaking of which…tune into the  HillBuzz & Mrs. Fox Radio Show on a daily basis.

1990 – Mary Robinson becomes the first woman to be elected President of the Republic of Ireland. And yet, here in 2011, we still have not had a female US President.  Why is that?

1944 – Franklin D. Roosevelt elected for a record fourth term as President of the United States of America. And yet, here in 2011, we still have not had a female US President.  Why is that?

What’s on your minds today?

What are people talking about in your part of the country?

HillBuzz Open Thread: Thursday November 3rd, 2011

[ NOTE:  The above is a clip from the old TV show, "What's My Line?". It's a segment where a panel of celebrities has to guess the identity of a famous person by asking questions.  I have been enjoying these clips and marveling at how well the celebrities speak and how politely they conduct themselves the whole time.  It's a far cry from what happens on TV today, that's for sure. ]

Today in History:

2008 - The combined efforts of the Left, the agenda-driven media, and the Cocktail Party GOP establishment result in the election of Barack Obama to the presidency after a lackluster campaign effort by John “it’s his turn” McCain. Meanwhile, in 2011, the combined efforts of the Left, the agenda-driven media, and the Cocktail Party GOP establishment are desperately trying to install Willard “Mittens” Romneycare as the 2012 Republican “it’s his turn” candidate.  Some people never learn.

1986 – The Federated States of Micronesia gain independence from the United States of America. Did you even know we were in charge of this place at all?

1978 – Dominica gains its independence from the United Kingdom. Good for it, I guess.

1973 – Mariner program: NASA launches the Mariner 10 toward Mercury. On March 29, 1974, it becomes the first space probe to reach that planet. Remember when the US had a space program?  Hope! Change! Mendacity!

1964 – Washington D.C. residents are able to vote in a presidential election for the first time. And they have apparently yet to get it right.

What’s happening in your part of the country today?

What stories are you tracking?

HillBuzz Open Thread: Sunday October 30th, 2011

Posted at October 30, 2011 by Justin4HB // Featured Content, Open Threads

[ Note: The clip above is from the old TV show "What's My Line?", in a segment where a panel of celebrities has to identify someone they don't know by asking that person questions.  This was filmed before the majority of Americans had ever heard of Kentucky Fried Chicken or its founder, Colonel Sanders.  None of these panelists had any idea who he was, which is amusing today because his image is so recognizable in the fast food world.  A modern example of this kind of thing would be if you time-traveled to the year 2004 or so and had a panel asking Mark Zuckerburg questions about Facebook or went further back and had a bunch of celebrities asking Steve Jobs questions about computers, long before anyone in the general public had heard of either of these two people or were thinking about their companies. ]

Today in History:

2005 – The rebuilt Dresden Frauenkirche (destroyed in the firebombing of Dresden during World War II) is reconsecrated after a thirteen-year rebuilding project. How long will it take for America to rebuild places like Detroit, which are in worse shape today than just about any city around the world that’s been through an actual war.  Comparing Detroit to Hiroshima in terms of now vs. then photographs is especially vexing, since if someone had to guess which city had an atom bomb dropped on it at some time in the past, I bet they’d think it was Detroit.

1995 – Quebec sovereignists narrowly lose a referendum for a mandate to negotiate independence from Canada (vote is 50.6% to 49.4% I have always thought that if Quebec ever did go independent of Canada, that would last for about five years before Quebec (and eventually the eastern Canadian provinces) became part of the US.  I still think this might happen in the future.

1991 – The Madrid Conference for Middle East peace talks opens. So long as there is Islam, there will never be peace in the Middle East because Islam itself is designed to thrive on chaos and bloodshed.

1985 – Space Shuttle Challenger lifts off for mission STS-61-A, its final successful mission. If you remember news coverage of the Challenger disaster, you might remember a woman giving color commentary of the astronauts as they boarded a van to take them to the launch pad.  That woman gave little bios on each of them as they appeared out of the building and got into the van…years later, that woman is still broadcasting…as Andrea Shea King on Patriot Radio.

1974 – The Rumble in the Jungle boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman takes place in Kinshasa, Zaire. It’s horrible what Parkinsons did to Muhammad Ali…and sad that George Foreman is now better known for his line of grilling products and that fact that he named all of his children (even the female ones) “George” than he is remembered for his athletic abilities.

What’s on your minds today?

What are people talking about in your part of the country?

What do you think the big story will be this week?
