5 Clues in Sarah Palin’s 9/12/11 Greta appearance that she’s running for president

Posted on September 13, 2011 by Kevin DuJan // 2012 Presidential Campaign, Action Items, Hillbuzz, Purple Team - Palin, Sarah Palin

After last night’s GOP presidential debate on CNN (sponsored by the Tea Party, live from Tampa, Florida), Governor Sarah Palin appeared on Greta van Susteran’s “On the Record” with her commentary on the declared candidates. Though the Governor’s supporters have known she’s running for president for some time (and, has in fact been running since 2008, the media will eventually see in retrospect), there were 5 clear clues in her FOX appearance last night that the Governor’s soon to announce her candidacy, though on her own timetable.

*******************************************************************************

5. Her appearance and demeanor were presidential and she deliberately chose to be a visual contrast to everyone on stage that night.

I make a concerted effort to avoid talking about what female politicians wear when appearing on television because the agenda-driven media often obsesses over their clothes — to the point where I honestly believe most of the people assigned to the political pages would much rather be writing for Anna Wintour (at VOGUE, darling…strike a pose!).

I offset by going on about whatever boring things the men in politics wear to things and wondering where they all got their dull, matching ties.  Like last night, for instance, where all the men on the GOP candidates’ stage wore either bright red or funereal gray and black ties, with Michele Bachmann sporting a red blazer (that, I have to say, looked great on her).

You see in the photo above what Governor Palin wore when she appeared on Greta’s “On the Record” — a striking pink jacket adorned with a strikingly patriotic American eagle pin.

If you’ve seen “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” on TLC, you’ll know the Governor films these FOX appearances in a studio that she had built adjacent to her home in Wasilla, Alaska. More likely than not, her husband Todd was working the camera.  The Governor thus specifically chose what she was going to wear on camera as a response to what she’d seen the candidates on stage wear during the debates.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Governor Palin in pink before.  It suits her well, of course, but why this pink suit jacket tonight when she could have worn any color she wanted on Greta if she wasn’t a candidate but instead was just a commentator (like Greta, who decided tonight was a great night for a strange mustard colored jacket and shirt combo)?

Governor Palin clearly wanted to separate herself from the GOP pack.  On a night where they went with bright red and somber tones, the Governor set herself apart visually and psychologically in something totally different.

Instead of the Alaskan themed jewelery and personal mementos she often favors, she added the patriotic eagle pin for presidential emphasis (as I expect we’ll see that pin a great deal on her lapel in the White House).

She had a very presidential styling to her all-around, which was very put together and deliberate, and was a clear indication that her appearance was not just as a commentator on peer with Greta but as an undeclared candidate for the nation’s highest office.

While I still don’t want to start commenting on the fashion choices of female politicians, I do think the Governor showed great strategic use of color and style tonight to make the psychological points she intended with great subtlety.

4. Governor Palin validates the Tea Party movement and underscores her strong support. She continues to encourage grassroots efforts coast to coast that are outside the Cocktail Party establishment’s purview.

The first question Greta asked the Governor last night was about what she thought of the debates, and the Governor seized the opportunity to praise the Tea Party movement’s rise in stature, to the point where CNN came to them to hold a debate.  Clearly, the Governor continues to encourage the Tea Party’s growing power in national politics and its expanding influence on things like these presidential debates.

The Governor repeats the word “validation” multiple times in reference to the Tea Party, and in particular its emphasis of “We the People” in everything it does.  If you recall, “We the People” is prominently emblazoned on Governor Palin’s touring coach, which she’s used for her bus tours through the heartland.  “We the People” is a phrase that turns up in the Governor’s recent speeches, and is something that’s clearly going to form a large part of her stump speeches when her campaign officially announces.

The Governor said the Tea Party was the big winner of this debate, because hosting the debate alone was a validation of the Tea Party’s belief that Barack Obama’s love of centralized government is at odds with the majority of Americans’ belief in states’ rights and private sector entrepreneurialism. The Governor also mentioned the restoration of the “pioneering spirit” that made this country great, which is something the Tea Party believes in.

Folks, this is not a TV commentator speaking, but instead it’s a soon-to-announce presidential candidate who is speaking directly to her supporters in the Tea Party movement and letting them know how much she appreciates the initiative they are showing in advancing the cause she, too, believes in.

The Governor is doing something brilliant here…and it’s what good managers and executives do in corporate settings as well. She’s not leading by fiat and mandate from on high, the way Obama loves to walk into a room, tell everyone what to do, and Barack bark orders at people.  Instead, the Governor is showing that the Tea Party has these ideas about America’s pioneering spirit and this quest to rein in the bloated federal government. Sarah Palin is not telling them what to think, but is instead telling Tea Party Americans she gets it, and thinks this way too.

It’s very well-played, strategic leadership from someone who knows the best way to cultivate a grassroots, sustainable campaign is to let people know she’s a champion of what matters to them — and that she’s very much one of them — instead of some alien entity like Obama sent here in mystery ordering them what to do.

3. Governor Palin singled Newt Gingrich out for praise, citing his emphasis on cutting waste in government and attacking crony capitalism (a phrase Governor Palin coined).

This is subtle, but you need to see that Newt Gingrich is not really running for president.  His appearances in these debates do not mean he believes he can or will be the Republican nominee. Gingrich has a few personal reasons for doing what he’s doing, among them keeping the shell of a campaign going long enough to qualify for federal matching funds to repay some of his debt, but also because he wants to be a sage, Obi Wan Kenobi, styled elder statesman of the Republican Party — which is a terrific role for him I’d love to see this man play for many years to come.

Since Gingrich is not really a candidate, Governor Palin can praise him in a way she’d never praise one of her real opponents for the nomination (which, in all honesty, are just Rick Perry and Mittens Romneycare). In a contest like this, for the presidential nomination, the Governor is well-served to never praise an opponent lest the agenda-driven media use her words against her in the future.

In the interview with Greta, the Governor takes great pains to never mention Perry or Mittens by name, with Perry only coming up when Greta asked about his poor decision regarding Gardasil specifically.  Otherwise the Governor just talked about her soon-to-be opponents failing as Governors to address crony capitalism in their states or to eliminate the wasteful spending that could save the country billions a year.

This is talking like a candidate, not a commentator. If Governor Palin really had no intention of running for president, then she’d be mentioning Perry, Mittens, and all the rest by name because she’d know sound bytes of her talking about them would rocket to the top of YouTube and generate a lot of excitement and attention for her…if her goal in being on TV was just to get attention, and not to lay further groundwork for her stealth presidential campaign.

Note how often the Governor says “crony capitalism” in the interview.  That’s very deliberate.  This is something else a presidential candidate does, because it’s an important part of the Governor’s campaign branding.

Palin 2012 will be about combating crony capitalism, restoring federalism, replacing Obama with a president who respects the American pioneer spirit, eliminating waste and renewing our fiscal solvency by taking to task those who got us into this mess.

All of this perfectly echoes the Tea Party spirit, which will be well represented in Governor Palin’s presidential campaign platform. You betcha!

2. The Governor keeps hitting at the permanent political class (what I call the Cocktail Party GOP establishment) as the root of most of the country’s problems.

Someone who wants to make a lot of money with a career in political commentary does not start a war with the permanent political class. It’s just not good business sense, since the Cocktail Party GOP establishment and its counterpart on the Democrat side of the aisle doesn’t take kindly to people who do this.

Governor Palin has set her sights on the permanent political class, and emphasized this again.  She keeps encouraging the Tea Party movement to hound the candidates to take the establishment on directly.

This, clearly, portends doom for Cocktail Party darling Mittens Romneycare.  As well it should, because the Tea Party is not about to allow the permanent political establishment to select another “it’s his turn”, “go along to get along”, candidate in 2012 the way it did John McCain in 2008.

The “go along to get along” phrasing is a direct assault on Mittens, without saying his name aloud, since this phrase fits him to a tee.

She also went after Rick Perry indirectly, by talking about Governors approving budgets that were full of waste, in stark contrast to Governor Palin’s tenure in Alaska where she fought waste at the local and state level.

When prompted by Greta for a direct attack on Perry, the Governor complimented Michele Bachmann (and called her “Michele”, not “Candidate Bachmann” or “Congresswoman Bachmann”, indicating “Michele” is not going to be in the presidential race once Governor Palin enters it) for challenging Perry’s record on Gardasil, particularly with regard to his Chief of Staff benefiting from the Gardasil deal.

Governor Palin used all this to take a smack at the agenda-driven media’s obsession with her “25,000 emails as Governor of Alaska” by noting that in those emails there are records of the Palin administration having serious concerns about the motivations behind Perry’s decisions regarding Gardasil.  Governor Palin said, “Something wasn’t right about that, and we knew it at the time”.

It’s obvious Governor Palin would not say this if she intended to endorse Rick Perry at some point.

It’s clear Governor Palin will never endorse Mittens Romneycare, since she keeps talking about the permanent political class being the root of our nation’s problems, and Mittens is their darling.

Calling her “Michele” sure shows that the Governor won’t be endorsing Bachmann, since it’s dismissing a lot of her credibility in doing so.

Remember what Governor Palin said a long time ago about getting in this race only if she felt there was no candidate in it whom she believed could not only defeat Obama but also get America back on track?

It sure looks like there’s nobody like that in the race…and it doesn’t take much to figure out what that means next for Governor Palin’s political future.

1. Governor Palin took every opportunity to make this segment with Greta a direct criticism of Obama.

This is something a presidential candidate does, looking to the general election.  She’s focusing beyond the primaries, and laying the foundation for a match-up where she puts her quest against cronyism and the establishment’s waste against Obama’s catering to these interests while expanding the role of government in people’s lives.

She reiterated her record of opposing crony capitalism and the permanent political class for over 20 years now.

She remarked on the bruises she’s received fighting against the establishment for all these years, at the different levels of public service she’s been involved in.

Why put her resume on display like this, noting her experience, if she is not a candidate?

She’s a candidate.

She’s already running.

She’s going to win, too, because when she does start appearing at these debates, she’s going to just decimate Rick Perry and usurp him as the new leader of the pack, bumping Mittens down to third place and knocking more than a few others out of the race the week she declares (like “Michele”, who will call it quits and focus on her run for the Speakership in 2013 instead).

If you are a Palin supporter, all of this might seem obvious to you, but all you need do is spend a little time in the comments section over at Redstate or Ace of Spades and you’ll see that the men who write about politics in the conservative blogosphere really are clueless about what Governor Palin is really doing strategically. Erik Erikson, especially, needs little breakdowns like this describing to him what Sarah Palin is up to (which foreshadows the complete mental breakdown he’s going to have when the Governor announces her candidacy, and he has to backpedal on all the energy he put into wishcasting that she wasn’t going to run).

    Kevin –
You're right. I hear so many folks on the radio (Medved, et al) who really have no clue at all.
He (and others continually say, "it looks more and more like Governor Palin is not running," etc.
He is obviously a RomneyGuy, and does everything to subtly diminish Palin, by constantly saying "doesn't look like she's running."
Either he really doesn't have a clue, or he is intentionally trying to diminish her standing/credibility by continuing to beat that drum that she won't run.

This, from a guy who endorsed McCain because he thought "he had the best chance of winning in 2008." And he is PROUD that he endorsed McCain. It drives me nuts that these guys just don't (or more likely don't want to) see what is happening with Sarah Palin.

He's worse than just a cocktail party guy, Kevin. He's got more than a little streak of elitism in him.

He's brilliant, and has a nearly photographic memory, but I had to stop listening to his show. The arrogance was breathtaking.

Agreed. Medved is *very* much the liberal establishment Republican. He announces nearly every day that "Palin is not running" so that I have to think he is trying to convince himself that he's right. When she does announce, I think there will be quite a few head explosions. ;)

I've been surfing the American blogs for a sensible take on if/when Sarah Palin is going to declare, and your analysis is outstanding: calm, to the (political) point, and free of the breathlessness about which day that declaration is going to come.

Brilliant analysis, Kevin! Greta also interviewed Newt Gingrich last night on OTR. He did something that I thought was very unusual, not only for him, but for any of the GOP POTUS field–he paid Gov. Palin a very sincere compliment on her Iowa Tea Party Rally speech. In fact, he called it "a very important speech," referring to the issues she raised about crony capitalism and the permanent political class. While Allen West would make a wonderful running mate for Gov. Palin, it occurred to me that, in the event Congressman West chooses not to run this time (mainly because of being a new member of Congress), Newt's experience might lend an "experienced elder statesman" dimension to the Palin ticket. I've admired Newt's contributions to the debates so far. He has a savvy way of calling out the debate moderators (leftists all, so far) and springing their traps so the other candidates don't get entirely snagged up in them.

If Allen West doesn't want the VP slot this time around, maybe Herman Cain would be a good, "maverick" running mate. If you want to clean up Washington, what better team than people who have not been a part of the problem? I love Allen West, but don't know if his career plans include running in 2012.

And when Newt complimented her on her Iowa speech, I too, thought what a dream team. Palin/West with Newt as Sec of State? He is very intelligent and has a way of bringing people together. He would make a great Sec of State.

Don't publish this–I know you won't, but I want to write this personally to Kevin.

Sarah has been considering whether to run for President since November 2008. It is now September 2011. Maybe she will still get in, but the longer she waits, the worse it looks. Your continued support of her is starting to make your blog irrelevant. You are attracting a small number of groupies, but you are losing your larger voice in the fight to replace Obama in 2012. (The comments last night on the debate, for instance, are nothing at all like the comments on other conservative sites like Lucianne or Ace or Hot Air. ) I like your blog, but it's becoming painful to observe myself wondering if it's worth it to click on my Hillbuzz bookmark and read the same old Sarah Palin arguments again. Please consider starting to support a Plan B candidate and promoting something beyond I-know-in-my-heart-that-Sarah-will-run. I know you're very loyal and you probably will hang onto Sarah until well into 2012, but I thought I'd throw that out there. Thanks.

      Avogadra,

If you don’t like it, don’t read it. No one is forcing you to.

If you want to read negative things about Governor Palin, go to Redstate.com and read Erik Erikson’s essays from now on. He will be right up your alley.

If Governor Palin decides not to run, I will decide who I will support instead of her. More likely than not, it will be whoever she supports. And of course I will back whomever the ultimate nominee is, because defeating Obama is paramount.

That is why it is so important to decide carefully who will be the best president after Obama is defeated…and that is Governor Palin. She is the only one I trust to do everything that is needed to be done to get this country back on track.

If there was anyone else I felt that way about, believe me, you will know.

Give my best regards to Pooh, Tigger, Kanga, Roo, Christopher Robin, and the rest in the Hundred Acre Woods.

Excellent analysis. I believe most of those claiming that Palin isn't running do so in order to hold her numbers down in the polls. I know several people who would vote for her in a flash, but who are convinced that she isn't running based solely on what they hear the talking heads say. Because of that they are now lining up behind other candidates at the moment.

Governor Palin is biding her time and waiting for most of the crop to flame out. By waiting for them to fall by the wayside, when she does get in the room won't be so crowded and she will be able to get right down to business instead of standing at a podium for two hours and getting only 2 or 3 questions. Also, the American people are going to grow weary of these GOP candidates who announced so early we now know every mole on their faces.

I am now saving myself the bother of an election and just relating to every word that comes out of her mouth as a presidential address. Until she speaks about something, it hasn't been addressed! Newt might just as well have announced that he's applying for her VP last night.
As others, for the first time last night I've seen that Newt and others are really running for something other than president. Everyone knows (instinctively) that the presidency belongs to Palin in 2013. Everyone.

I know that women are scrutinized more about their clothing, hair, jewelry, etc, and I dont mean to add to that because it is a bit unfair (remember all the Hillary pants suits jokes?), but I think this is amother clue that she is ripunning.I mentioned this in the overnight thread, but in addition to what Kevin says in number 1 about her clothing…she has cut her hair into a more mature and serious do. She has fabulous hair – thick and healthy- and it always looks great. But the up-do that she often wears is a little pageant-y and her hair last night was way more serious looking. I don't mean this as a criticism at all, but I have read criticisms of her hair as looking like what a teenager would wear going to prom. Her hair last night made her look a bit older but very age-appropriate. She was stunning.

I think you're right. When I looked at the picture at the top, I was wondering what was up with that.

I disagree. I think that Sarah puts her hair up because it's in her way when she has it down. I think for her, hair up means business. When she took the oath of office as Governor of AK, she wore her hair up. When she was on the boat with Todd fishing for salmon, her hair was up. Her official portrait as Governor shows her with her hair up. When she was making SP's AK, her hair was up, whether climbing a mountain, fishing for haliut or watching bear.

Now when she went to the Governor's Ball and was dancing with Todd, her hair was down. When she was sitting pretty for Oprah, her hair was down. When she's on TV, her hair is down.

So the whole pageant thing does not even cross my mind, especially in light of the fact that when she did enter a pageant, she had hair above her shoulders.

Her political history would have been good enough, but add to that the ceaseless vetting, books and their ‘fact finders’, 24,000 emails forced open, fighting Obama since even before ‘Death Panels’ and long before a campaign . . .

Sarah Palin has earned trust. And she has earned my support. Sarah Palin 2012

Okay, confession is good for the soul (or so they say), so I am confessing to Hillbuzzers with all honesty. So please be kind. Maybe what I say will help someone else who struggles with which candidate(s) to back. I have loved Sarah Palin ever since I came to know her in 2008. I even have a hand-signed thank-you note from her for a Christmas card I sent her family. I adore her personally and professionally and politically.

But then I began to doubt. Is she really the GOP's best shot against Obama?

I've been with Kevin almost completely about Romney. Romney's not a fav. But I am tempted to think he can win–because, I suppose, that's what I am being told. He still doesn't set well with me.

Perry is a guy I like. But the whole vaccine thing bugs me a little. And the whole in-state college tuition for illegals REALLY bugs me. Yet he's right on SS being a ponzi scheme.

I am coming back around. I am beginning to think Palin is above all this. Maybe the media and the Cocktail GOP are really out to lunch eating each other's cucumber sandwiches afterall.

    Please absolve me!

You didn't mention her new haircut…is it a girl thing? Men just don't notice women's haircuts. It's much shorter and straighter.

Kevin outdid even his fabulous self with this great analysis! We're all on pins & needles, of course, and we're all going crazy 'cuz we love a woman who's out there and is so totally REAL!! And, esp. for "poliical junkies," this sort of gamesmanship and strategizing, plotting & planning, etc. is just up our alley! We love the "torture" that this sort of waiting forces us to endure! But we have great hope & faith that our trust will NOT be misplaced. Palin is just demonstrating how a WINNER thinks, plans & preps for her all-out campaign (in sports, politics and, indeed, life itself!). No half-measures, no half-truths!!

BTW, I, too, noted her more "mature" hairstyle as a harbinger of things to come; and although it's not quite as "sweet" as her usual styles (long, curly or upswing), I think she'll "soften" the look as she gets used to the new cut. (Anyway, who says that beautiful, naturally curly/wavy hair has to be straightened, flat and ugly?

There is no Open Thread yet for today, so I will post this here:

What do you think about the NY District 9 (Weiner Seat) turning from Democrat to Republican yesterday?
This was a seat that the Dems held since 1920!
Even the media is calling it a "referendum on Obama" and that Obama was an "albatross around the neck of the Democratic Candidate."

I remember when Weiner was resigning, how all the interviews with the typical "man on the street" said they would re-elect Weiner, they didn't care about the photos, txts, etc. And I don't want to go down that particular memory lane from this past summer, but what changed?

Was the media lying to us that Weiner (or another Dem) would win the seat no matter what?
Were they just out of touch?
What can this teach us for the future with polling, etc and what we hear on TV/Radio/Newpaper?

And if it wasn't just the media that mis-reported things, what if it really was a referendum on Obama? Will he hear about this, will his inner circle insulate him from it? If he does hear about it, does he care? Will he think it really is about him, or is he so narcissistic that earth-shaking results like this are lost on him?

And FINALLY – will this be the death knell, the beginning of the end? Will he (and more importantly, his Soros-backed handlers) start to realize what having him on the ballot in 2012 portends? Will they yank him off? Will he step down "for personal reasons," as KDJ has been asserting for so long?

Then what happens? Love to hear everyone's thoughts?

Damn, you know how to turn a phrase! "Wishcasting" – awesome. Your analysis is spot-on. There has been some angst over this Greta appearance over the past couple of days, but I believe as you do that this angst is unwarranted, and this was indeed her most "candidatory" appearance yet.__One thing I think you missed – when she talked about elected officials railing against bad budgets or bills, then voting for them anyway, I suspect she was talking about Michelle and her record in congress. While I agree she probably believes Bachmann will drop shortly after Palin announcement day, I think she wanted to make it clear that, despite backing Bachmann's charges against Perry, she was not endorsing Bachmann's candidacy in any way.

I thought her hair was just pushed back over her shoulders, not cut. Please, not cut! If this is her new look, I don't think it works. This is the way I look when I get out of the shower. I love Palin and will vote for her every chance I get, but I thought she looked a bit like a drowned rat in the hair department on Greta's show – not up to her usual high standard.

Megyn Kelly (FOX News) cut her hair, to no advantage. I hope Palin has not followed suit, or I hope she learns how to work with it at this length. IMHO, this look wasn't good.

A few months ago at a gathering of my husband's family (good conservatives all), I asked what they thought about Sarah as a presidential candidate. You'd have thought that I'd released live cockroaches into the room! I was astonished to hear the the liberal media's talking points–spoiler, can't win, not smart enough, etc.–coming out of their mouths. I think that I even heard "polarizing." Well, that just made me want to work harder and study her policy statements to prepare myself for the next round. Sarah is brilliant to bide awhile and give people time to get bored with Romney and nervous about the ability of anyone else to take on the entrenched political establishment of both parties. She'll be looking a lot better to a lot of people before the end.

Sarah Palin went after Rick Perry very aggressively on Greta the other night. She pretty much sent him a signal that she's coming after him. She didn't mention Romney by name, and only mentioned Bachmann and Gingrich in a positive light. She knows that they are no threat to her, so it costs her nothing to compliment them. She also talked about her record a lot, which is very unusual for her. She's definitely runnin'. A lot of people think that she may announce on Constitution Day. That would be absolutely perfect. She may have already given us a clue via her bus.

As soon as she finished her speech in Iowa on 9/2, we all knew she was running. She is the only one who I believe can lead us out of this nightmare, and I will be there to watch when the collective heads of the liberals and GOP establishment explode when she announces. That is, when I'm taking a break from helping get her elected.

I have always thought if Gov. Palin ran she would have the smoking gun that would tie the DNC and the Obama Administration to all those frivolous ethics complaints. I would not be surprised if she had it and was holding on to the right time to release

As for Newt, I would love to see him as Press Secretary. Watching him school the press every day would be my idea of Must See TV!

and Joe McGinness is about to release his book of smears. I just saw an article in the British Press. He claims that it was Sarah who was snorting cocaine!! I think Joe seems to have a bit of a problem with his nose… it is growing just like the nose on Pinocchio.
