Great Merciful Zeus, we just heard a Christmas mash-up on Sirius that had a do-wop accapella group mix Toto’s “Africa” with “Twelve Days of Christmas”.
It was WONDERFUL…the first thing in recent memory that made us jump up and down, get all excited, and be truly, goofily, happy.
Does anyone know this song so we can get it on YouTube or something? The Sirius dial said, “Holly Straight No Chase” on it, instead of giving a group name or song title. But some of the lyrics were “Christmas down in Africa”, “Patridge in a big pear tree”, “million men or more”.
Know of any other good Christmas mash-ups?
A mash-up is when you take two songs that aren’t really related, but they go together perfectly when arranged by someone with talent. The TV show Glee, one of our favorites, is great at taking 80s songs and mashing them up with current hits.
We wonder how many great 80s songs have been mashed up with Christmas music like “Christmas Down in Africa”.
UPDATE: The Group is called “Straight No Chaser”. Not bad to look at, either.

Oh, I have their DVD – it’s Straight, No Chaser.
I’ll find the You Tube.

I love these guys, bought their Christmas CD last year.
December 24, 2009 at 6:49 pm
Just heard/saw them on my computer. Wonderful.

One of the members of this group (Dan Ponce – a total cutie) worked for Chicago’s channel 7 news until the group was ‘discovered’ through youtube.
The Straight No Chaser Christmas CD “Christmas Cheer” is my favorite holiday music this year. It’s all just so witty and fun!
December 24, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Thanks for bringing them up, Hillbuzz boys! I found out they are having a concert in Kansas City in April whilst I was looking up their website and bought 2 tickets for it!

This kind of brilliance is one of the reasons I ADORE the new Fox show “Glee.” What a fabulous show! And I thoroughly enjoyed the short-lived “Sing Off” that finished this week.
A capella singing is a true art, and I love all of this raw talent.
December 24, 2009 at 8:42 pm
A Capella comedy is even tougher. I really enjoyed that considering I was just watching the Toto episode of “Yacht Rock” (that can also be found on Youtube)

This is nice, the lady learned this piece by ear…which happen to be my favorites!

I purchased this year’s Christmas CD by this group. Awesome! As others have said here, Christmas music has been one of the simple things that has rescued me from Obamaland Blues.
December 24, 2009 at 10:28 pm
Merry Christmas guys. I look forward to reading more of you in 2010!
December 24, 2009 at 11:53 pm
Wow. What’s better than 10 gorgeous guys in tuxedos?
10 gorgeous guys who are FUNNY and can SING!
YUMMY!
December 25, 2009 at 2:01 am
Guys, if I EVER get up to Chicago, I want to buy you all a round because this is the funniest choir I have ever seen and I can always count on you to bring me a smile when I need it.

I’m a huge fan of Straight No Chaser… if you loved this song, you should listen to their newest catchy hit, the Christmas Can-Can, from their newest holiday album:

Their website has other things like the Sitcom Medley which is great. On You Tube, find “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. It will be stuck in your brain forever. Great group!!

Here is a Men’s Choral Group doing the Halleluia Chorus – It’s funny if you were taught by nuns.

Not to negate the talent of the Straight, No Chaser guys, have any of you listened to Chanticleer? It’s a gay choral group that has incredible, trained voices, throughout. Their repertoire is sophisticated and is the most astounding group singing I have ever heard.
Worth a listen!!! (They are also good to look at!!!)
December 25, 2009 at 9:12 am
Chanticleer is a wonderful Chorale group. I’ve seen them in person and we have several of their CDs.
One of their past members, Michael Lichtenauer, (http://www.michaellichtenauer.com/mfl/)was a co-worker of mine on the internal help desk at Sprint before he joined them. In fact, I took his photo for his resume back then. After 7 years with Chanticleer, he got darn tired of the traveling the world, and went off on his own.
I’m really proud of Michael. I miss him, but I’m so happy he was able to follow his dream!

Merry Christmas Hillbuzz boys! Thanks for sharing the wonderful music. I’m going to purchase their CD. What a fantastic acapella
group!
Drive safely to grandma’s house(or wherever else you’re going).

Thanks for this post – I had never heard of this group and love them! The 12 days is brilliant (love the dredl part, also the same bit in the can-can). And I adored the 3 Kings – incredibly arrangement to use Mission Impossible and then to go rasta – brilliant!

The clip is for a concert they did in NYC that was filmed by PBS and can be seen on your local PBS Station during pledge drives.
The entire concert was wonderful even if the hostess was totally annoying but, then again, that was her job.

My family discovered Straight No Chaser last Christmas and I gave my daughter their “Holiday Spirits” CD this year. Such a talented, funny, and altogether delightful group!

Beautiful. Thanks for all the music clips.I am really enjoying them.
