What’s on your mind this Monday?
Did you see that McDonalds’ is pulling out of Iceland because the country has melted down completely, financially, and it’s gotten so bad that franchises can’t function anymore?
If you think, “Oh, that’s just Iceland, what do I care about Iceland”, you need to remember a few things.
For starters, one of us here did a study abroad in Iceland for a year in 2002-2003…right when Iceland thought it was king of the global financial world. It was a geological field study, so he got to go to very remote parts of the country, and even in villages with 25 people in them Icelanders deluded themselves into believing they were hedge fund managers and financial gurus. Everywhere he went, he heard Icelanders say over and over how smart they were, how they knew best, and how being Icelandic made them natural masters of the market.
Everyone bought into this crazy myth about Icelanders being global financial geniuses who could solve all the world’s economic problems…it was never explained HOW or WHY a nation of 500,000 who’d spent millennia fishing and raising lamb and small Viking horses were all financial geniuses, but that was the image and line the media fostered…both IN Iceland and abroad.
We’ve always followed Iceland because of that personal study abroad connection…and are seriously heartbroken to see the country falling apart at the seams now. Iceland will surely lose its sovereignty, be forced into the Euro, and could cease to exist as anyone knows it…all because the delusional people there bought into a utopian, media-fueled myth that never existed but promised great hope and massive financial change led by false prophets.
Does any of this sound familiar to you?
Dr. Utopia, the current president, reminds us a lot of Iceland’s hedgefund/financial markets pipedream. The MSM created a phenomenon in Dr. Utopia, claiming he would save the world, lower the oceans, fulfill everyone’s dreams. The MSM told everyone that they didn’t have to worry about anything anymore, because Dr. Utopia was here, and everyone should jump for joy.
This is all as crazy as Icelanders thinking they could wake up one morning and be global financial giants.
The sick thing is, a delusion like this gets well-received globally at first because, largely, people around the globe, particularly in Europe, are liberal idiots.
They’ll believe anything.
They believed Icelanders should be the new powerhouse in international banking and investment markets…until they stopped believing that and Iceland collapsed into a tragic joke.
Do you even understand how TERRIFYING it is that McDonalds is pulling out of Iceland? One of us here used to work private events for McDonalds corporate here in Chicago…these are people who do not cede territory or give up on ANYTHING. There are McDonalds in Gary, Indiana, which is honestly the most terrible place on Earth. There are McDonalds in the worst part of the Southside of Chicago, in the heart of Thunderdome in Cleveland, in DETROIT, MICHIGAN. If McDonalds can operate successful franchises in de facto war zones, and make them profitable, there are horrors on the horizon for Iceland that McDonalds wanted to avoid by pulling out now.
And in Gay, Cleveland, Detroit, and the Southside, McDonalds is often the last sign of civilization in what’s otherwise a wasteland of burned out buildings, abandoned cars, and chaos. Whenever we do some crazy freelance gig in a bad neighborhood for Chicago Public Schools or some other entity that seemingly wants to have us murdered on a temp assignment, those golden arches are a welcome sign of relief on any random street corner: because if there’s a McDonalds somewhere, no matter how bad it looks there, it can’t be THAT BAD since at least this business is open.
In Iceland, the nation’s three McDonalds are now closed.
McDonalds is a chain that would remain open during an alien invasion or a zombie uprising. These people are not whimps. They are tough as nails and determined to make a profit ANYWHERE.
So, we don’t know how bad things are going to get in Iceland, but today we’re honestly scared for that country.
And scared for the US, too, because the delusion that was Iceland is strikingly similar to the global delusion that is our current president, Nobel Peace Prize Winner, whom the liberals of Europe adore so much…right after they got done adoring Iceland as the great financial hope of the globe.
Idiots.

Actually, your overstating the situation. The franchise holder of those 3 units will re-open as independant burger joints. They pulled out of McDonald’s because by statutory agreement with the parent company they were forced to buy and import all their product from Germany, which made it unfeasible under the current European wide economic conditions to make a profit. By going independant they will be able to purchase fresher local product and remain competitive. Why anyone would want to actually eat a McDonald’s product is beyond me. Its crap and always has been. Iceland in this instance is actually better off.

Robert C.:
Back in the early 60s, my parents thought they’d died and gone to heaven when a McDonald’s opened close to our house in South Jersey. Instead of packing up the whole family and going to a diner for Friday night supper, my father was able to zip over to McDonald’s and buy a big bag of burgers and fries and five milk shakes for a third the cost of dining out. Nor did he and my mother have to ride herd on three lively kids while paying a small fortune for dinner out.
These days, I prefer Burger King for my burgers, but I will still got to Micky D’s for the occasional Egg McMuffin. (These days, eggs in the morning frequently make my stomach queasy — whether it’s soft boiled eggs I’ve made myself or the egg in an Egg McMuffin.)
So you can indulge your food snobbism all you want — just don’t try and impose it on me.
November 9, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Yeah.
Fried Cod and Chips Shops are a great improvement – more grease and environmental destruction than with Mickey D’s!
November 9, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Never addressed to you. Nice to have an opinion but the product is still crap.
( slightly retracted: except their old fries, which even Julia found quite acceptable ).
November 9, 2009 at 8:47 pm
Yes, I believe Julia said the “nutritionists” got to McDonalds and so she stopped eating the fries which were once very good. LOL.
I grew up eating Whataburger in Corpus Christi, TX. It was such a treat. My mouth waters just thinking about it. Imagine being 8 or 9 years old and you can order anything you want – in my case a Whataburger, fries, and strawberry shake. I was in heaven!
November 9, 2009 at 5:19 pm
I’ll take a “double, double” In ‘n Out cheeseburger–gorilla style.
November 9, 2009 at 8:26 pm
Do you want fries with that?

Y’all constantly do a great job of getting important news out to readers. Please bring some attention to the new article ABC just put out a bit ago on the Ft. Hood attack:
“Officials: U.S. Aware of Hasan Efforts to Contact al Qaeda”
http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/fort-hood-shooter-contact-al-qaeda-terrorists-officials/story?id=9030873
This is absolutely horrifying, and also disturbing that our intelligence agencies have seemingly once again dropped the ball. Not surprising though, considering how they’ve been trashed six ways to Sunday under this administration.
November 9, 2009 at 10:41 am
You can be sure that there will be great pressure from the WH to make sure that this tragedy will not be ruled a terrorist act. Of course it has all the hallmarks of terrorism because, it was plotted, and innocent, unarmed people were killed. Keep saying to yourself: war on terrorism is over!
November 9, 2009 at 10:46 am
Excellent overview of the situation.

Political correctness will destroy this Country.
Religion of Peace? How many times has that been repeated this weekend? Sorry!!! Are the Amish, Baptists, Jews, Jehovah’s Witness, Catholics, Mormon and Scientologist ALL harbingers of death and violence? Why does Islam get the ‘ROP’ asterisk time and time again? Islamists’ ‘act of terror’ after ‘act of terror.’
How about ALL OF THE WOUNDED AND THE FAMILIES OF THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES at Ft. Hood receive the Purple Heart.
They were killed in the line of duty by an enemy combatant.
And The Won is STILL ‘too busy’…no Ft. Hood Memorial Service for him. Could it be that he can’t photo-op it for all its worth (given former President and Mrs. George W. Bush low profile, non photographed visit to the wounded and the surviving family members Saturday)? Because any other reason (for not attending) is unfathomable.
November 9, 2009 at 10:54 am
I feel so sad saying this..but I agree with you..I have heard two separate stories about 9/11 and TWA flight 800..that they say was not a terrorist attack. These stories are from Long Island and two different sorces, one that was selling veggies right near the Trade Center and a woman/husband that saw a something hit the TWA plane. But it sounded like they, the FBI dropped the ball in both cases.
This has always bothered me. But now seeing/hearing about Ft.Hood..It just seems like everything has to be PC..in the meantime our men/woman are being killed.
November 9, 2009 at 11:15 am
Especially horrifying when you see this video of Hasan at Obama’s Homeland Security Meeting!
You know we’re in trouble when
“Obama, the Horrible” has terrorists working for him on Homeland Security.

Video: Footage shows Hasan in November at … Homeland Security event
November 9, 2009 at 1:11 pm
I swear I just heard, on Fox News (break room) that Leon Panetta has SEALED Hasan’s records. SEALED?!?!?! WTH? What purpose would this serve? Was Hasan more involved in the Homeland Security Conference/Obama Transition Team than thought?
Anyone else hear this or have any input?
November 10, 2009 at 7:52 am
This administration, promising the most transparent one in our history, is more intent on hiding anything which might reflect badly on them than on being open with the American people.
This is going to bite them, big time.
Let’s call it what it is: a war on terror, not some mealymouthed substitute meant to make us more ‘understanding and sympathetic’ toward muslims. Enough with political correctness if it endangers our country.

their prices have crashed!

In local news: BOO to the new area code!
Now I have to dial 1-773- whenever I’m making a local call. Blah!
November 9, 2009 at 10:33 am
Californians have been dialing 11 digits for local calls for many years. Like any other minor annoyance, youll get used to it as it becomes second nature. Just be glad you still have a phone. Who knows what the future of communications holds under the Maobama regime.
November 9, 2009 at 8:41 pm
Speaking of…I’ve been using MagicJack since April. For $120, plus $40 for the jack and shipping, my phone service is paid off thru 2015. Well beyond the Apocalypse. LOL!
Overall, I’m pretty happy with the service.

The Chicago area too.

HB’s piece on Iceland is right on par. I read an article, which I think was published by Salon, described Iceland in exactly the way Hillbuzz did. Everyone became a hedge fund manager. They abandoned what they have done so well for so long to be finance experts. When the situation collapsed in Iceland, it was devastating The author reported hearing explosions at night, which was said to be Landrover owners who could no longer afford to own the vehicle would blow it up to collect insurance money. I couldn’t tell if that was said “tongue in cheek” or what. I’m not a finance guy, so it was hard for me to figure how Icelanders were making money. Needless to say, they speculated, got lucky, and went for broke, and they are now broke. How sad. The author made some comments about how this is a sign of things to come for the USA.
November 9, 2009 at 8:28 pm
Yes Bill. When Iceland first went bankrupt earlier this year (several months back – in the spring or early summer) I read that even all their traditional fishermen had given up fishing and sold their boats so they could get into “banking.”
Bet they wish they had stuck to good old Cod now!

I just read that Hillary is in Berlin for the 20th celebration of the fall of “the Wall”…
November 9, 2009 at 5:33 pm
I watched the falling of the dominoes along the site of the former Berlin Wall, and I cried my eyes out. Especially since Lech Walesa–who had a prominent place atop my Christmas tree, circa 1984–smacked that first domino.
Is something wrong with me? Did anyone else watch this and get all misty (and even silently thank Ronny Reagan for the “…Tear down this wall” admonishment)? I even applauded until the last domino fell. I find my behavior worrisome.
November 9, 2009 at 8:55 pm
Excellent interview of Lech Walesa by Spiegel Online.

Nothing is wrong with you – on a 20th anniversary of a historic date like that crying is absolutely normal (I cried too. though I have to admit that the reason could be that I’m german – this anniversary was kinda close to home (in the emotional sense))
November 9, 2009 at 5:38 pm
JERSEY FOLKS: Do any Jersey peeps from here also post on the City-Data-NJ bulletin board, or whatever it’s called?
In preparation for moving back home–by June 2010, I hope–I’ve started posting and interacting with Jerseyans on that board.
Just wondering…

Did it pain anyone like it pained me to hear Hillary introduce Obama today at the Berlin Wall festivities with the words,”And now I have the pleasure to introduce a man who tore down different kinds of walls”. It is not healthy for her to stand so far outside her own personal truth. I don’t intend to wish harm on her, but when we are not honest with ourselves, it often manifests itself physically. Please Hillary, step down from this role. I don’t like her being used as a tool this way.
November 9, 2009 at 8:44 pm
OMG, yes! Hmm…maybe that’s the main reason I cried like a baby (see above post). I was screaming at the TV: “He screwed you! The caucuses were RIGGED!” and like that. Very upsetting to me to see her in this position.
I’m still hoping she’s holding a card she’s yet to play. Please, Hill…get outta there! He’s a d’ouche!
November 9, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Yes!!!! (My original comment didn’t post, though it probably will at some point.)
November 10, 2009 at 3:10 pm
Well sure it hurts when hillary introduces Obama (it even pains me when I just hear her say his name) – but what else was she supposed to do?
when something important and great as this anniversary happens it would be weird when something like that would spark controversy.
And believe me quite some people are outraged that Obama had time to make a pitch for the olympic games but had no time to celebrate with millions of people among them some of the most important statesmen the anniversary of the fall of the berlin wall. – however Obamas absence meant Hillarys presence so I’m actually quite satisfied.
November 9, 2009 at 8:41 pm
Does anyone else find it beyond strange that Egobama wouldn’t go to Berlin to celebrate the end of communism there. It was our president, Reagan, who was largely responsible for this. And yet the new pres. is too busy. Too busy doing what? Pushing healthcare reform. Communism, huh?? Maybe he has a place in heart for it after all. I’m suspicious, but glad to see Hillary there with all the other world leaders.
So she was forced to introduce dear leader, not a biggie in my book, compared to the fact that he wasn’t there. I guess he’ll go back in a few years when he’s campaigning there again.
November 10, 2009 at 3:29 pm
maybe I’m gonna cause dismay with this one but – largely responsible for the fall of the berlin wall were first and formost the people of Leipzig(monday demonstrations) the people of berlin and east germany. The communism itself was already in it’s last breath especially due to Michail Gorbatschows policys of Glasnost and Perestroyka -which means nothing else then the opening towards the west and substantial changes in economic structures)
Don’t get me wrong Reagan played like many others a significant, vital role.
