A friend of ours sent us this article from RedState just now, and we had a good discussion about it. It’s commentary on David Brooks’ column in the NY Times, where Brooks argues Democrats really and truly are committing political suicide, since the White House and Congress believe America is The Huffington Post. Brooks says Democrats will try to ram Deathcare through using every trick in the book, even if only 35% of the country identifies as liberal and supports this. Brooks predicts a massive backlash against the White House and Congress in 2010.
One of the comments on this RedState article says Dr. Utopia will be down to the 30s in approval ratings by Christmas, and that September is going to be a brutal month for liberals.
We feel Dr. Utopia will be in the very low 40s by Halloween, definitely…but the REALLY brutal month for him is going to be the four weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Why?
(1) People out spending money will realize how little money they have left to spend…and they will wonder where their hope and change are
(2) During the holiday season, people will gather together. There will be discussions…things will get into politics. Everyone will wonder where their hope and change are. Those who didn’t vote for Dr. Utopia will get to say “Told YA SO!”
(3) Heating bills will start rising soon…and will be BRUTAL in November-December…it’s going to be a bad, bad winter, folks. If you aren’t saving up for the gas bill now, you need to start today. We’re expecting our bill to rise to the $200-300 range for Buzzquarters this winter. We have friends with large homes who pay $800 a month for heating during the holidays. This is going to have an impact on the public’s perception of how things are going in this country. It always does…but this year, it’s going to be colder than we’ve experienced in a while…and people will mock the Democrats’ for all of that talk about global warming. Dr. Utopia’s going to take a big hit on all of this.
We have no idea how low Dr. Utopia’s numbers will go, but also can’t see how he breaks this trend and pumps the public’s opinon back up. It doesn’t seem like he can avert a real disaster by Christmas.
What think you?

Other than Glenn Beck, who’s trying to stop him from ratf**king the country?
I believe Sarah Palin has higher numbers than he does now /evilgrin.
September 1, 2009 at 7:42 pm
I just keep wondering where the Republican Party is when it comes to the stuff Beck is uncovering. The only one brave enough was Sarah Palin….which tells you something right there, doesn’t it?
They did confirm that she will be speaking in Asia on the 23rd of September, but the libtard newspapers still had to spread a lie that she was being “punked” again.
September 1, 2009 at 8:42 pm
The Republican party is just as corrupt and deficient as the Democrats. Clinton had 5 “czars”, Bush had 20. Bush had the Patriot Act (many parts of which I believe have gone too far). Spending skyrocketed under Bush. Republicans, including McCain, are generally in favor of (or at least not opposed to) amnesty for illegals.
Over the last century, Republicans have moved consistently left in the name of compromise, and the Democrats have dutifully continued moving left in order to differentiate themselves form the Republicans. Now we have back door deals, lobby money, and general screwing of the American People on both sides of the aisle.

I agree..but what do we do? How do we vote?
September 2, 2009 at 1:12 pm
The last time I was contacted by the GOP, I said that we are independents and that we will be interested in showing support once they grow a spine. Until that happens, we are on our own.
September 1, 2009 at 8:12 pm
Hillbuzz- such cautious prognostication from you fellers- my prediction is utopia will be in the low 40′s and touch high 30′s for a day or two by mid-october per Rasmussen. Zogby already has him at 42% as of today (yesterday?), but Z is a bit squirrelly for my tastes.
Other than that, think your analysis is solid- we’re in for a wicked winter in the midwest/north/northeast at minimum and heating costs will be at least as bad as you say, there will be a horrid Christmas shopping season, and the deranged left will drive the DNC over the cliff trying to jam healthcare down everyone’s gullets.
My one quibble- you have discounted (or at least not mentioned at all) the continued slide of all things foreign policy during here that could really break bad in the next couple months- if memory serves North Korea was just caught shipping naughty weapony things to Iran, Pakistan just released A.Q. Khan the pied piper of nuke knowledge, the frothy left is grumbling ever louder about us bugging out of Afghanistan, Russia is now saying very rude things about Poland to whoever will listen, the Obama admin’s complicity in the lockerbie bomber release is now coming to be known, etc. etc. etc.
Out of this heady brew I think something very embarrassing and/or lethal could happen to the US under mr. “legal enforcement” president in the next few months. Just throw this on the pile of what you were already talking about.
Not good for El Doctor Utopia- no bueno, verdad.

President Barack Obama’s White House seder was a small affair for family and friends. Tonight’s Ramadan dinner is a big one:
Cabinet members — Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Attorney General Eric Holder and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius — are expected at the dinner celebrating the month-long Muslim period of daytime fasting.
Several members of Congress, including the Muslim Rep. Keith Ellison from Minnesota, are expected too – Reps. Andre Carson of Indiana, John Conyers of Michigan and Rush Holt of New Jersey, as well as Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana.
The White House, which filled a long table for the private Passover dinner that the president held in April, has released a guest list that will take more than a few tables to accommodate at an event starting after sundown, at 8 pm EDT. In addition to the Cabinet members and congressman, the White House expects:

You have got to be kidding me. A ramadan dinner? Where can I get info about this? Thanks.

Don’t forget how he blew of the traditional WH christian prayer breakfast earlier this year.

First of all, I live in the south so my high electric bills come in the summer and we just added on to our house (which included an additional air unit) so let’s just say, I dream of having $300 electric bills again. Secondly, I hope the Christmas season is as bad as you predict because then as a person who still has a decent job, I’m hoping that means awesome sales and I may be able to afford something for myself this year…what a novelty.
Finally, I pray that everything that “skating on glue” posted comes true. That would be the best Christmas present EVAR!!!

I think Obama has painted himself into a serious lose-lose here. How does Obama emerge from the health care mire looking good?
If he passes a bill the Dems ram through, he’ll lose most of the remaining independents. But if he vetoes it or fails to get it at all, he’ll lose some of his base.
If he passes a watered down version, he might gain back some republicans and independents, but for the most part, that damage has been done. Passing a watered down version might even be worse than passing nothing for his base — harder to blame Republicans for the failure this way. Plus, if the provisions don’t take effect until 2013, nobody will be experiencing the improvements prior to his next election.
The debt and deficit are going to sink him… and there’s talk now of another bailout.
There are dozens of things that could go wrong at any moment, including a corporate real estate collapse, a stock market crash, more bankruptcies, terrorism, or aggression from Iran/North Korea/Taliban… plus there’s that issue of the Russians possibly selling missile parts to Iran.
Seems like he’s teetering to me.

I have to agree with your comments Hillbuzz.I see his numbers really dipping in the Holiday period. It is not going to be pretty as he can not take rejection.

Encouraging news about natural gas prices for the fall and first part of the winter from a newsletter I received yesterday, but it goes on to warn that once into 2010 prices should be much higher as the excess inventory is used up. The ratio of natural gas to oil prices is worrisome.
From the newsletter:
In June, the average price for gas was $3.79. So far for August, the average
price for gas has been $3.23. However, that average price understates the
current more acute problem of natural gas prices. On August 22, the gas price
fell below $3 for the first time in many years, and basically has been trading in
the $2.75 to $3 range since August 22. To put current low gas prices in their
broader historical context, since January 2000, gas prices have traded below $3
per MCF (thousand cubic feet) only 8% of the time, whereas it has traded above
$5 per MCF nearly 70% of the time.
The relationship of natural gas prices to crude oil prices is currently totally
out of whack. During this entire decade, the price of 1 MCF of gas was about
1/8 the price of a barrel of oil (for instance, if gas were $6, oil would be about
$48). Currently, gas prices are extremely low in relationship to oil prices, with
gas trading at about 1/25 the price of a barrel of oil! While gas is around $3, oil
is around $70. In terms of their historical price relationship, natural gas is
currently EXTREMELY inexpensive compared to oil. To illustrate the point, if the
8:1 long-term average ratio currently applied, because we currently have $70
oil, gas would be selling for nearly $9. Conversely, at $2.80 natural gas, oil
would be selling for about $22 per barrel, not $70 per barrel which is the current
price. One year ago, when both oil and natural gas were selling at record high
levels, oil peaked at over $140 per barrel, and natural gas peaked at over $13
per MCF— even at the peaks, the ratio was closer to 10:1.
The reason for the severe disparity between oil and natural gas prices can
be summed up by looking at the dramatic surplus of natural gas in storage.
And so on….

I think you’re very right, HB. Of course, what baffles me is the reaction of the left. Did anyone else see Willie Brown on Hannity tonight? The guy was seriously sitting there bragging about what a wonderful job Obama is doing, his great leadership, blah-blah-blah! Hannity & Kate Obenshain just kinda of stared at him in disbelief.
September 2, 2009 at 7:33 am
It’s Willie Brown. Need I say more?
I am appalled at the excuses black commentators (not all, but most) make for Obama. Do they not realize that this man is not up to the job they voted him into? He cannot put it all together and is in way over his head. He still doesn’t get it that the majority in this country are past his wordy, sterile speeches? He thought he could roll into office and sit back and let other people do all the work. Vacation, anyone?
Do they not realize that Obama has damaged race relations in this country and actually set them back decades? The more screeching we hear from that community, the more ridiculous they sound. They do not yet realize that skin colour alone is not going to make Obama successful. Unfortunately, it will not only be the white community which suffers…the black community will suffer, as well. They need to wake up.

My DH, who fancies himself an expert on the Carter years. (His favorite President) says this is a lot like watching a slo mo replay.
Ouch!
SYD
September 2, 2009 at 11:24 am
My DH and I briefly discussed the polls last night. He is pessimistic because Clinton polled even down in the 30%s early on, but when on to win a second term.
But Clinton had experience, was a survivor and knew how to trim his sails to the wind. I don’t think O will fare the same in an adverse situation.
I think we will see an intensification of what we are already seeing, which is that the president blames his own supporters for not supporting him enough. Just today I read that the administration thinks that supposedly pundits have not sufficiently pumped the health care – they are supposed to try harder. Everyone has to work harder for dear leader. It will never be him who has to do anything.
As the daughter of a narcissist, I have been down this road before. The true believer works harder and harder to please the narcissist. If things turn out well for the narcissist, the narcissist claims all the credit for everything. If things don’t turn out well – it’s all your fault. Either way, it’s all blame and no appreciation. What’s with all these hardcore obots masochism cinderella complex? Glad I’m not a sucker on the line this time. To get out of the trap, the true believer has to go through a disillusionment about the narcissist – and about themself. Good luck to them.
September 2, 2009 at 1:15 pm
HB – I completely agree with your analysis. You’re right on about the holiday period when people are reaching into their empty pockets and there are talks of high inflation. It will be a pretty sad fall… But I’m hoping that it will solidify people’s resolution that this crap of hope and change is all that is left on our faces…
September 2, 2009 at 2:37 pm
All anyone has to do is ask themselves the question: Are you any better off since Obama has taken office? Is the country in any better shape since Obama has taken office? Do you know anyone who is actually better off due to Obama? (maybe those who were able to buy cash for clunkers cars, that’s about it). When someone honestly answers any of these questions, they will realize he is a fraud and cannot deliver on anything he promised nor did he ever intend to.
September 2, 2009 at 6:11 pm
The people who bought cars are now realizing they have to pay taxes on the $4500. Some of these poor saps can’t even drive the cars yet, as they are waiting for the gov’t money to come through. The car dealers will be hurting because car sales will drop for the next few months seeing as anyone who may have waited a few months bought the car now.
