We’ve been thinking of what to say about former President George W. Bush, now that he’s officially a former president. Our first impulse was to write about the Florida recount and the time we spent down in Tallahassee in 2000, screaming and yelling like crazy people, demanding justice and fairness and the unalienable right for all votes to count, but considering we had to go to Washington DC on May 31st last year (for the Rules and Bylaws Committee Meeting) to scream and yell for the Democratic party to count all votes in Florida and Michigan, any residual anger we had over Election 2000’s been squarely absolved.
Then, we thought we’d open this by complaining about how silly it was that Bush gave everyone from staff members to world leaders nicknames, and carried on like an old frat boy long expelled but still planning the next kegger, but then we remember the Obama fist-bumps and the “hip slang” (hey, do me a solid) the 44th president tries to work into almost everything he says, and suddenly calling Vladimir Putin “Pooty-poot” doesn’t seem so unusual.
And George W. Bush doesn’t seem so bad after all.
All things considered.
Last night, at Sidetrack here in Boystown, the largest gay bar in the Midwest (if not the US, as its owners claim), the bar was decorated haphazardly with flags and stars leftover from the Fourth of July beer-b-que. The ubiquitously creepy Obama “Hope” lithographs were out in full force (hopefully for the last time) — that haunting picture of himself he likes so much, staring forward and to the right, cast in red and blue silkscreen like something from the Bolshevik’s revoluntionary printing presses. Little cards on all the tables advertised the big Obama party the bar was throwing on Inauguartion Day, “to celebrate history” by mocking the outgoing president with classless, crass, unadulterated hate.
Because interspliced with the lively showtune videos Sidetrack shows on a Monday night, cut into all the singing and laughter and good times, were nasty little jabs at President Bush that drove the crowd wild in a most childish way.
We were embarrassed in the way we are when our nieces and nephews run wild at Chuck-E-Cheese, coming close to lighting the animatronic rat ablaze with birthday candles, or we catch the little hellions making fun of someone who’s slipped on the ice or dropped their lunch tray, in that particularly chilling Children of the Corn way cold, unmitigated cruelty comes shockingly natural to some kids — despite their being sweet, chubby cherubs just moments before.
The VJs at Sidetrack whipped up compilation tapes of Bush tripping on stairs, flubbing lines in his speeches, dropping things, taking a wrong turn and trying to open a locked door, etc. All the things that any one of us does in the course of a week, or a day, but are mercifully never recorded doing (there’s a reason we don’t have a web cam, folks) — since we don’t have film crews monitoring our every waking moment, the way Bush did. For eight years, with zero personal privacy. So, with more than seventy thousand hours of footage from Bush’s presidency available for creative editing, a cobbled-together string of flubs and fumbles sent Boystown into hysterics, mocking the soon-t0-be-former president.
And the nastiness and hate that welled up in the crowd and lasered in on Bush was palpable and frightening, if not particularly shocking, considering where we were (this is the same bar, after all, where another favorite video compilation during the election was mocking Hillary Clinton or Sarah Palin, using Saturday Night Live’s greatest and most sexist hits — because making fun of women and babies is always a hit with some gay men).
It was ugly, in a world where not a frosted-tipped hair’s ever out of place and fawning over youth and beauty is the order of the day; it was cruel and clumsy where sensitivity and nuanced expression are normally prized; it was unbridled and irrational hellfire from people who stage whole parades to complain about religious people and Republicans’ unbridled irrational hatred of them.
Hello pot? This is kettle, welcome to fabulous — and to the Jekyl meets Hyde cocktail of Bush hate and showtunes at Sidetrack on a Monday in Boystown, where we very much realized we didn’t know where we belong anymore.
Because, as the Bush Administration ends, so too ends our days of believing Democrats are always good, Republicans are always evil, and gay men have a monopoly (or even firm handle) on what’s witty and clever. Democrats can be just as nasty and hate-filled as the insufferably vile Rev. Fred Phelps. Gay Democrats can be a room full of bitchy, malevolent queens, martinis in hand, oblivious to how petty and unattractive hatred of any kind truly is.
And this from supporters of “The One” who was sent to Earth by a God none of them believe in to bring us all together, heal the planet, and distribute unto us unicorns in fluffy rainbow parades of lemonade and pixie dust.
We were probably the only people in that bar who looked up at George W. Bush on the screen and instead of mocking him, raised our Pilsners and toasted a decent and gracious man who stood up to the challenges that confronted him, made tough choices and never shirked his responsibilities, and did the very best job that he could, every day, for the last eight years.
Oddly, it’s the same way we feel every time Madonna turns up on Sidetrack’s screens, in the train wreck that was Evita, pleading for Argentina not to cry for her, while we realize that yes, an untalented actress truly put her heart and soul into this part and did the very best that she could do with what she had to work with, and the script she received.
George W. Bush is a man we wish had never been president, the same way we wish today that Obama had never become president, and the same way we wish Madonna stuck to singing and dancing and left the acting to others. In Bush’s place, we would have rather had Al Gore or John McCain in 2000, and John Kerry (or even Howard Dean or John Edwards) in 2004. This year, we wanted Hillary Clinton, and then John McCain. But, things certainly worked out differently in all cases the last eight years (and there was just no saving The Next Best Thing, Shanghai Surprise, or Body of Evidence, regardless of creative retrospective casting).
For a very long time, we found ourselves firmly in the company of Bush-haters, though we never rose to the level of nastiness we saw on display at Sidetrack last night (a level on par with the worst of the Clinton-hating and gay-bashing the right’s ever put forward). There was a spell when we refused to even refer to Bush as the president, instead calling him “Dracula”. Some people found that hard to follow, as they never knew if we were talking politics, or oddly referencing Bram Stoker while delving into energy policy. Those oil-vampires from Texas, just wanting to get their fangs into Iraq, up to their nefarious schemes, out to get all of us, such evil people.
Evil was a word we threw around pretty lightly, ascribing it to everything in the Bush Administration, the Bush family, and the Republican party in general. Because we lived in an isolated Democratic little world of our own, of course we were never corrected on any of this — far from it, we were always encouraged. Bush is stupid. Bush is a drugged out drunk. Laura Bush is a murderess (for accidentally killing her friend in a high school car accident). The Bush Twins are out of control. Barbara Bush is Lady MacBeth. Dick Cheney shot a man in the face (well, actually, this one is true).
One of the reasons it’s been so hard to put together our thoughts on Bush as he leaves office is because, honestly, we feel badly about the way we’ve treated him, about the things we’ve said about him, all these years.
Because George W. Bush is a decent man with a servant’s heart who did the best damn job he could. He kept us safe for seven years. He stood up to the bullies and terrorists and scoundrels of the world and said with Texas gumption and flare that America under his watch would kowtow to NO ONE.
Maybe too much Texas for the likes of us city slickers, and maybe a lot of his personal style and flare was hokey or unrelatable to urban elites, but even his loudest critics would be hard-pressed to argue the man didn’t always show his heart — a larger than life heart, beating strongly with a love of country and its men and women in uniform.
That’s what we’re thinking about today: what an excellent Commander-in-Chief George W. Bush was, and how he respected and revered all those who serve the nation, in every way under the sun. There’s a lot of things Bush did wrong, but he was good to our troops, and the military obviously loved him, and that’s mighty impressive in our book.
It’s also impressive Bush never cut funding to AIDS charities, and instead INCREASED funding to unprecedented levels, in terms of both treatment and scientific research into a cure.
All those men screaming and yelling at Bush on the screen in Sidetrack’s, making fun of him, laughing at a tired Bush flubbing a speech — and not one of them stopped to think about the simple fact that if this man was truly as stupid and evil as they claim, and if he was TRULY deserving of all that hatred, then why on Earth didn’t he cut funding to AIDS charities and other LGBT resources as president?
No one has an answer for that.
Obviously, Bush knew the gay community hates him, and that he’d never win their votes. So, why didn’t he divert all those millions to causes that would have won him more independent and conservative voters? Why waste all that precious capital on people who hate him, who want to destroy him?
And yet, Bush never lifted a finger to harm us…he never cut funding to the LGBT community…he didn’t lash out at those who made him their enemy.
He really and truly was a compassionate conservative after all — and a kind and decent man who exercised his power with great restraint.
After 911, with media cheerleading behind him and an acquiescent public, Bush could have declared himself Emperor and enacated anything his heart desired. He could have used the cover of tragedy and the unprecedented free hand he was given in its aftermath to do any number of crazy things. He could have seized control of the entire government and forced through any number of draconian measures, sticking it to the left every way he could.
But he didn’t.
His response to crisis was measured, restrained, and even-handed.
Yes, we booed and laughed along with all our liberal friends at Bush sitting in a classroom reading about a pet goat while minutes ticked by on the screen in Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 911. We ridiculed the president for just sitting there, like a fool we thought, seemingly not knowing what to do.
But, today we see that day differently. After spending two years on the campaign trail for Clinton and then McCain, after doing countless interviews and writing on this site every day, we realize Bush was responding carefully and deliberately to a situation unfolding before him — the way a responsible public figure does. THINKING before ACTING. Not wanting to terrify children needlessly, not wanting to create panic by abruptly getting up and running from the room. What was the man supposed to do as the Secret Service established its plan to get the president to a secure location, and Bush waited the mere minutes it took to arrange a successful and well-executed plan to calm the nation in a catastrophic crisis?
On a day none of us was prepared for, that seemed lifted out of comic books and bad movies, when the federal government moved rapidly to respond to the worst thing to happen on American soil in half a century.
Because he’s affable, because he tells jokes, because he speaks with a twang, Bush is mocked as stupid and slow while others in his place would have been considered careful and even-keeled.
But, none of the men who’ve made it into the White House are stupid (all men so far, unfortunately, but that will change soon enough if we have anything to say about it). And some are better under fire than others.
With seven years to look back on 911, we have a lot to say about the intelligence failures that allowed a preventable event to scar the nation, but we will, until the day we die, be forever grateful to President Bush for being the resolute and honorable Texan who stood up that horrible day and grabbed that bullhorn at Ground Zero and told the world in a loud clear voice that America would soldier on, would prevail, and will rebuild.
That was no weak kumbaya moment. That was George W. Bush at his finest, saying what we all in our hearts wanted a tough Commander-in-Chief to say.
Yes, any president would have said those things.
Yes, any president would have received massive approval ratings in response to an attack (that’s what Americans do, we rally around the president in times of trouble).
But, would President Gore have struck that perfect note? Would he have been the testosterone infused Commander-in-Chief in the body of an average man we needed and wanted that day?
We don’t know. Maybe.
But, Bush sure held the world together that day, when he was just what we needed, when we needed him most.
AND WE WILL ALWAYS BE GRATEFUL. We moderate, gay, Hillary loving, Boystown-living, lifelong Democrats will always hold a special place in our hearts for Dubya and his bullhorn. We were proud to be Americans on that terrible, terrible day — and proud of our president who led us with such clear conviction and courage. We didn’t vote for the man (either time), but were sure glad he was on duty on a day we’ll never forget.
What followed in his presidency was a mixed bag in our eyes — with more missed opportunities than we can recount. If only Bush had asked Americans to enlist in the military, Peace Corps, or Americorps instead of telling them to go shopping to help the economy. If only he had taken our friends and foes in the world up on all of the help they offered after 911, when everyone from France to Cuba extended hands of friendship and wanted to join America at that terrible hour. If only we had found a way to carry those sentiments of “We are all New Yorkers now. We are all Americans today” forward in the months and years ahead, instead of alienating so many with what was perceived as a failed go it alone, it’s us or them mentality. If only he had pushed to rebuild those towers, taller than every, in record time — so seven years later, we wouldn’t still have a big hole in the ground in New York where a phoenix should have risen, as indelible and resolute as our nation itself.
The last eight years is a presidency of if onlys, buffered up against one we believe will be the disappointments of “what might have been” and “we were promised” (we hope Obama proves us wrong and that changes, but that part is squarely up to him)
The loud chorus of angry voices in Boystown claim Bush will go down in history as the Worst. President Ever. We think those cocktails went down too fast last night, because that’s ridiculously far from the truth.
Bush, in our opinion, will be judged much better than Jimmy Carter, just a touch above his father, George H. W. Bush, but below Bill Clinton — all somewhere in the middle of US Presidents when the rankings sort out in thirty years of proper retrospect and dispassionate evaluation that will come.
Iraq some day will be a new Germany and Japan, a once hostile nation so firmly democratic and pro-American we’ll never be able to recognize it if flung into the future from today. Regardless of what you think about the case for war, or the merits of invading Iraq, Bush will one day get credit for creating the future, prosperous Iraq, and all the benefits Americans will enjoy from that. Part of us wishes strongly he had gone to war with Iran instead, because that’s a true threat the world could do without, and is a continuously proven sponsor of terrorist operations against Israel and American interests, but that’s a whole other topic of debate.
Though we never in our lives thought we’d say this, we truly do look forward to some day soon meeting former president Bush, shaking his hand, and thanking him for his service — whatever history will end up thinking of him.
That’s something we couldn’t imagine back in January 2001, when we spent Inauguration Day muttering about Dracula this and evil that and cursing the Supreme Court and that idiot Donna Brazile (for botching the Gore campaign).
After we watched the 747 formerly known as Air Force One wing into the air and bank right towards Midland, Texas this afternoon, we were struck by just how bizarre it is that a bunch of Democrats who positively hated this man eight years ago were proudly a little teared up to see him off to retirement. That’s a fairly good measure of a man right there, if he can, without knowing or trying, change strong opinions of him in the most unlikely of places.
And you can’t get much more unlikely than the lot of us, here in Boystown, wishing George W. Bush a heartfelt and gracious goodbye — and thanking him, from the bottom of our big gay hearts, for doing the best he could, every day, for each and every one of us (whether any of us liked or voted for him or not).
So, channeling him for a moment, “Ya dun good, Dubya. Best ya could. And we’re grateful!”.

January 20, 2009 at 4:19 pm
That was beautiful. Thank you for that.
January 20, 2009 at 4:20 pm
Thank you Hillbuzz! And most especially… Thank you President Bush for keeping us safe since 9/11! I know it’s supposed to be former President Bush but not today. And thank you dear Laura for being the classy lady that you are. Hate to see what will be done now in our lovely White House! These people have no class and that is something you cannot buy! I am ashamed of my country today especially the benediction. I thought we were beyond that but apparently not.I pray the man does good for our country but not taking us to socialism.
November 22, 2009 at 12:47 am
Well, I guess we know now.
Marxism, Socialism and the “Apology” President.
Blood will run in the streets if things don’t reverse.
Things will not reverse.
This is the church of Barack, if indeed the word “church” can be used in any sentence with his or should I say “HIS” name.
Line up and march to the new beat Amerikka … or else!
Here comes the fines, taxes, fees and charges to pay off all the Sin-ators for their votes to convert all of us … U.S. into indentured servants with no master but Barry to turn to and no help in sight.
Maybe France, England, Italy, Burma, North Africa and all the countries we set free from tyranny over the last 100 years will come and return the favor.
Probably not.
I guess this will be another one we’ll have to do ourselves.
Now where did I put that torch and pitchfork?
January 20, 2009 at 4:22 pm
This is a wonderful essay, thank you!
January 20, 2009 at 4:26 pm
George, I didn’t vote for you. All those eight years I thought you didn’t do a good job, and now I am sad that you are leaving us in the hands of this unknown person. I felt for a long time that you would look like a boyscout aside of the man who will sleep in our house tonight. Reasons make me not trust obama even more than I distrusted you…that’s saying lots. I have seen a good many presidents come and go, and I have the most anxiety about Barack Hussien Obama. obama is the type of person I would not buy a car from..let alone decide things that will change my life. Thanks George.
January 20, 2009 at 4:29 pm
Nice tribute. I love you guys.
Had to come here today because I refused to watch the mass hysteria of the inauguration and I knew I would get a lift (and reality) from you.
Thanks for being here.
January 20, 2009 at 4:41 pm
With tears running down my face, I thank you for your sensitive and thoughtful commentary.
Thank you PRESIDENT BUSH!
I hope I’m wrong but, I feel as though the grown ups have left the building.
November 22, 2009 at 12:50 am
Yeah, you were right!
Surely taxes, fees and misery shall follow us … U.S. all the days of his … uh, “HIS” presidency.
Hopefully it will end SOMEHOW before ‘12!
January 20, 2009 at 4:51 pm
You did well. It’s nice to read a bit of sanity on this day. I don’t know what the future will bring, but I’m damned sure it will be better with you as a part of it.
January 20, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Thank you Hillbuzz! And a huge thank you to President Bush! Didn’t always agree with you on issues but you kept us safe after 9/11. You did your best on many issues. People don’t realize but they will soon that Pelosi and her gang of crooks run things and the Prez doesn’t or can’t stop them. Been around for many elections and this boy child scares me with his socialistic thinking. So may God bless the Bush family and Hillbuzz for their wonderful tribute. Thank you from out West.
January 20, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Dear President Bush:
Thank you for this:
“January 16, 2009, President George W. Bush enacted an Executive Order providing for, in part, “Reinvestigating Individuals in Positions of Public Trust.” The Order in its entirety is attached hereto for reference as Exhibit “A.”
9. The Order provides in pertinent part that, “It is necessary to reinvestigate individuals in positions of public trust in order to ensure that they remain suitable for continued employment.”
10. The Order further provides in pertinent part:
“Sec. 5. Reinvestigation of Individuals in Positions of Public Trust. Individuals in positions of public trust shall be subject to reinvestigation under standards (including but not limited to the frequency of such reinvestigation) as determined by the Director of the Office of Personnel Management, to ensure their suitability for continued employment…”
And thank you, crazy man Alan Keyes for filing a suit in conjunction with this order, since you have standing as one of the candidates for prez in the 2008 election.
January 20, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Hillbuzz, you are a class act.
January 20, 2009 at 5:02 pm
HB,
Just a quick note to let you know that you got linked in an LGF thread. To a person, we appreciated the sentiment, the willingness to reexamine your previous positions, and the guts you displayed in posting your thoughts.
Well done, Ma’am! (Raises glass of water)
January 20, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Well said HILLBUZZ! No one could have said it any better. You eloquently give people a lot to think about. I have always admired the way President Bush did what he thought was right in the face of so much criticism & sheer hatred. Other politicians don’t have the backbone to stick to their beliefs when 80% of the people don’t agree with them. Lesser people change their tune and cower. It takes a lot of guts to do that. I will always be greatful to Pres. Bush for keeping this country safe from attack. HillBuzz I thank you for your wonderful commentary & inspriration. Keep up the good work, I really truly appreciate it.
January 20, 2009 at 5:06 pm
Thank you for a wonderful tribute!
January 20, 2009 at 5:13 pm
weeping now..our loss is LAURA.s
gain..she gets her beloved husband back.
that is a beautiful tribute HILLBUZZ,,thank you.
January 20, 2009 at 5:14 pm
And this teary fag hag raises her Pilsner not only to Dubya but to the men of HillBuzz, who give that word “man” a good name and who themselves are decent and gracious and do their very best job every day.
Thank you for always speaking so eloquently and wittily for so many of us, and thank God you’re back!
Love,
Jules
January 20, 2009 at 5:19 pm
He will be missed. Zero doesn’t know diddly squat about protecting our country.
GWB is glad that he’s moving back here to Texas and I don’t blame him.
January 20, 2009 at 5:19 pm
Thank You for your honesty. I proudly voted for G.W. Bush twice. While I don’t agree with all of his spending and especially this latest round of “bailouts”, I am grateful to/for him for how he has kept this country and my family safe for the last 7 years. One of the few things that I believe the government should do is National Security and President Bush gets an A+ from me on that. I shudder to think what BO will do.
My DH laughs that his very conservative wife reads and loves a blog written by gay guys from Chicago, but what you wrote about President Bush is one of the many reasons why. While I don’t always agree with you, I do agree with the stupidity of blind party ~whether Democrat or Republican~ loyalty. I agree that where we can agree and work together for the good of the nation, we should. I may not always agree with you, but I don’t hate you, in fact I love you. You have a great sense of humor and a way with words that is truly a gift. If I’m ever in Chicagoland, I would love to meet you and take you to lunch. Have a Great Day!
January 20, 2009 at 5:29 pm
Thank you, Hillbuzz.
A beautiful tribute that I hope Mr. Bush gets to read.
January 20, 2009 at 5:32 pm
Thanks??? Thanks for what? We lost 3000 odd Americans killed on 9/11, on bushes watch. Another 4000 plus American men and women killed in an unjust war in Iraq. Brought us down to the terrorist level by the use of torture, unlawful wire taps, letting New Orleans drown, destroying the justice department, outed a CIA agent, biggest deficit in the history of this country and let the wall street and the banks run this economy into the ground. Yea, thanks george …Thanks for nothing.
November 12, 2009 at 12:27 pm
I dont think Bush gets the medal for biggest deficit anymore. And also, the same winner of the new biggest deficit has not ended this “endless war”…so…who is worse in reality? Someone who could have learned from those “mistakes” or someone who’s country was just attacked and had to make decisions that haven’t been discussed since FDR’s day….
December 31, 2009 at 10:03 am
11 months since your rant and we now have the biggest deficit in the history of our country, no thanks to Obama. We have also witnessed the 11/5/09 murder of 13 U.S. Soldiers and the wounding of 38 others on our own soil at Ft. Hood Texas and now the attempted bombing of another U.S. bound jetliner on Christmas day……
For some unexplained reason, this current administration doesn’t make me feel as secure anymore……
As a life long conservative and G.W. Bush supporter, I thank you Hillbuzz for your kind and thoughtful words.
January 20, 2009 at 5:38 pm
wow. i love you guys… i have also been struggling with my own feelings. and you have captured much of it here. thanks so much!
January 20, 2009 at 5:38 pm
I’m a long time lurker on HillBuzz, and while I haven’t always agreed with you boys on topic, you almost always make me laugh and I leave at the very least respecting your opinion, if nothing else for the respectful way you present it.
As a very conservative blogger, let me say, from the bottom of my heart – Thank You. Thank you for this post. I have been close to tears many times today (mostly watching the Obarf-fest), and this just sent me over the edge. You put so many of my sentiments aptly into words I was not able to write. There are many conservative bloggers, myself included, that have been scrounging for some sort of real hope, in this Hollywood version of Hope & Change-itis, but posts like this will go far to truly unite us and will be a welcome change from all the divisiveness and hate that currently seems to be circling the blogosphere like buzzards.
We may differ on political and social policies, but I would personally love a discussion with you all any day.
Thank you for your kind words and respectful sentiments.
Lizzi @ The Bitten Word
January 20, 2009 at 5:47 pm
Yes, HillBuzz, you are a class act. Indeed George W. Bush is a good, decent man.
January 20, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Wow, that is all I can say… made me cry, and I needed to read that today. Wonderful writing as usual..
Thank you so much HB for you patriotism.
Thank you President Bush, my nephew was killed in Iraq and you personally called my sister and her husband.. It meant the world to all of us, you really did care and never made those decisions lightly. My family knows that. My nephew (Joel) loved being in Iraq, he loved the people and was proud of what we were doing there. He never understood the medias reluctance to report the positive, or the truth as he called it.
January 20, 2009 at 5:50 pm
Made me cry hillbuzz. Love GWB. And as my mother advises our friend “run George. As far as you can from washington. It’s gonna suck!”
January 20, 2009 at 5:51 pm
Thank-you George Bush you did keep us safe since 9/11, god only knows what will happen to us now, I hope we only have to put up with the Obama spectacle for four years, I know they will be really long, but hopefully they will pass quickly and then we won’t have to look at them anymore, and hear anymore about hope and change, the only hope I have is to try to keep the change in my pocket, it might be all I’ll have someday with the Bodysnatchers taking over D.C.
January 20, 2009 at 6:00 pm
That was a beautiful tribute. The man did the best he could do as President. Isn’t that what we all strive for? To do the best that we can?
I’ve never understood the hate for George Bush. And glad to see that you aren’t a hater anymore.
January 20, 2009 at 6:05 pm
Good to have you back HBuzz.
And to President Bush, I wish you and Laura the very best in the years to come. You have earned your place in history, and I’d like to thank you for your service. You remained firmly in the pocket for eight years with deep regard for your country.
I know this is a day when the two men we honor are President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama. So I honor them, but honestly the only person I am thinking of is Hillary Rodham Clinton. Not with regrets, but with the future in mind.
January 20, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Thank you for writing this.
I may not have always appreciated his policies or his decisions but I will always respect the fact he served his country and his people willingly and with diligence in a difficult period of time.
January 20, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Cheers!
Great read. Very stirring and even as a Conservative it gave me back some respect for a man I’d lost most of it for.
Thanks for opening your mind and your heart and making us all take a step back.
January 20, 2009 at 6:10 pm
Thank you for the great article. i too have
had a new appreciation for George Bush and
seeing how gracious he and Laura were during
this transition only reinforced those feelings. I am from Texas and some of my
friends who know him personally say he is
a really good man and has a big heart. I
did not vote for him either, but I do wish
him well and I do believe history will treat
him more kindly than most Americans have.
January 20, 2009 at 6:12 pm
We are doing ourselves no favors by forgetting the criminal acts committed by the Bush administration. If they go uninvestigated, and unprosecuted we will be doomed to suffer under similar crimes by some future President–of any party.
This is not some petty partisan debate–from torture to wiretapping and a long list of scandals … these are REAL crimes, committed in our name that weakened our constitution and brought shame on all of us.
We must not forget, we must not let these crimes go unanswered.
November 11, 2009 at 6:32 pm
Ya! lets make a precident, so that we can now investigate to the MAX, all of the illegal things the obummer admin. is doing. He will go to gitmo, for sure.
November 22, 2009 at 7:33 pm
What criminal acts?
January 20, 2009 at 6:12 pm
Obviously Angels81 is off his/her meds again.
Bless you for writing such a wonderful tribute – a shining example of why yours is one of the most intelligent sites in existence. (And funny, too.) Each of you is an extraordinary person; the world would be a better place with more kind, sensible and passionate people such as you in it.
GWB is missed by many today. But just you wait, in the not too distant future legions of his detractors will be crying, wishing he were still in the Oval Office and leading this county.
I have to ask: What’s your take on Jill Biden’s gaffe on Oprah yesterday? Love to hear your opinion. I’ll bet Rahm’s at Home Depot stocking up on duct tape as we speak.
January 20, 2009 at 6:14 pm
All of you at Hillbuzz are my new-found friends. I read u everyday. I tell all my fellow conservative, suburban friends about you and encourage them to read too. It’s so refreshing to read intelligent, thoughtful, level-headed commentary that’s not from the talking points handed down the political food chain. Thank you! I’m going to start coming into the city and visit that pizza place you’ve mentioned, the Pie Hole, so I might get the chance to meet anyone from Hillbuzz. I’ll be the surburan mom wearing the “I Love Sarah P.” badge. I hope you’ll sincerely welcome me.

You complained that we’ve lost over 4000 to an unjust war in Iraq. How about the fact that while we have engaged the terrorists in Iraq, they haven’t been able to engage us here on our soil?
You complained that Bush let New Orleans drown. How did he do that? Did he send Katrina? If you recall, both the mayor and governor were Democrats who couldn’t get their heads out of their azzes to implement a simple plan to evacuate New Orleans. or know how to go through the proper channels to ask for help. The Federal government can’t just take over a state or city. Or about the billions of dollars that were appropriated for levies, but the Dems down in NO and LA, used it to line their own pockets.
You also blame President Bush for the deficit and the economy. While I don’t agree with all the spending that President Bush pushed for and got ~I believe private and local programs/charities do a much better job~, Congress is the branch of government that controls the spending. If you remember, the economy was doing fine until the Dems took over control of the Congress in 2006. Last Fall’s Failed Bailout wouldn’t have passed without the Dems in Congress. Now, we have a huge deficit and the Dems in Congress and BO want to spend how many Billions if not Trillions more? Where’s the deficit going to be then? Are you going to complain about it then?
So yes, Thank You President Bush! You didn’t do everything perfectly, but you love this Country and All Americans.

BTW,
Does anyone know this information:
What office do I need to send my mortgage booklet to and my gas bills as well. Are they the same office or is there a seprate one for housing and one for utilities? Does anyone have that, have they released it yet?? Woohooo–free at last! St. John, here we come…I can finally do more of what I want…which is lay on the beach and play with my kids…thank you Obama!

[...] not this time. This time, their outstanding farewell to now former President George W. Bush prompted me to not only share this on twitter and facebook, [...]

One thing I have always respected GWB for is that he fully understands that the job of president is NOT a popularity contest…at least not once you are elected.
I believe he acted with utmost integrity, and did what he believed was truly right for the long-term in our country. He (and any president) has to back tough and frequently unpopular decisions based on real information that the general public will never have.
Notice how BO has shifted many of his views toward the center once he started getting those same daily briefings? Once you are in that seat, it is a whole different story than the fairy-tale dreams of the campaign trail.
GWB was a class act all the way, whether you agree with his views or not. By far, the most disappointing aspect of this election was the reception GWB received today at the inauguration.
How sad for GWB and how sad for those classless people.
January 20, 2009 at 7:07 pm
the time we spent down in Tallahassee in 2000
If you fine fellows are ever back this way, I’ll buy y’all a pilsner or two.
January 20, 2009 at 7:10 pm
That was very classy, guys. Thank you for your reflections.
I think history will reflect kindly on W.
January 20, 2009 at 7:13 pm
Hey Riddlemethis,
Don’t seal that envelope. Didn’t you listen to the speech that, according to CNN, will be “chiseled in marble”? Self reliance and personal responsibility is now important for the recovery of our nation………now he tells us!!!!!
January 20, 2009 at 7:16 pm
VERY nicely done.
January 20, 2009 at 7:16 pm
To angels81,
Guess you are not from Louisiana. Here, it is well known who created the mess in New Orleans, and I promise you, it was not President Bush. It was the lack of responsible leadership from the Governor and the Mayor of New Orleans. The moment Nagen and Blanco called for an immediate evacuation of the city, they also declared the Superdome as a “refuge of last restort.” Within hours, thousands were lining up at the Superdome. They didn’t even try to leave the city. Find something else to blame on Bush. Leave New Orleans off your list.
God bless President Bush and his wife. It saddened me to hear the Obama supports chanting “na na na na, hey, hey, good-bye” to the departing President. That was so rude, and as already stated, classless.
January 20, 2009 at 7:35 pm
angels81, you and others like you are a CANCER on he soul of this nation.
January 20, 2009 at 7:36 pm
You guys are B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!!!
Hate is a senseless state to be in.
I will never hate no matter what I think of someone.
Hate clouds reasoning.
That you Hillbuzz. I have started to honestly love democrats.
January 20, 2009 at 7:39 pm
Thanks
Hill Buzz for that excellent article.I think it is one of the best I have ever read about Mr.Bush’s Presidential term.
Being a life long Dem,I never voted for the man and never liked him. But after this election my eyes were opened and I found out that the media has been lying and manipulating our information the way they want it to be.
While I don’t agree with Bush about much I do think he had a handle on protecting this country. It happened once on his watch and he was determined it would never happen again.I appreciate that and I am scared to death not knowing what his successor is going to do.
I have to say that I at least know just about every thing there is to know about George W.Bush’s life and can attest to the fact that he loves his country and did what he thought he had to do to protect it.
Wish I could say the same about the usurper, who along with his “for once in my adult life I’m proud of my country” hideous wife, just moved into George and Laura’s old bedroom.
That the man’s past is a question mark along with all of his dispicable and illegal actions is the reason that for the first time in my life I voted for a Republican.
So thanks President Bush for keeping us all safe.I wish you and your classy wife the very best life has to offer.God speed to you both.
January 20, 2009 at 7:47 pm
Thank you for your kind words! You made me laugh and you made me cry with your beautiful, thoughtful, and honest words.
I have felt for many months that history will be very kind to Bush, not only for how he held this country together after 9/11, but for his compassion toward those suffering from AIDs and Malaria in Africa, as well as his undying belief that all people want freedom.
Today is a very sad day for those of us believe that a thug BOUGHT this White House, and Obama didn’t care what he had to do to get it. Chicago has always been one of my favorite cities, and sadly thugs like Obama give it a bad name.
I love you guys and would love to buy you dinner on my next visit.
January 20, 2009 at 7:51 pm
Thank you Hillbuzz. It is unfortunate that the people watching Obama being sworn into office today, did not have enough CLASS to let President Bush ride off into the sunset without having to demean him. He kept us safe. I never worried as long as he was in office. I don’t agree with everything he did, but I believe he is a kind, caring man and he had America’s best interest at heart. He was a positive roll model and he loved his family. As far as Iraq, I am glad S Hussein was removed from power. He was a horrible man. I can not imagine the fear those people lived with every day. They now have hope and Bush gave them that. There are a lot of dictators in the world that should be removed from power. Iran, North Korea, Cuba the list goes on and on. I don’t understand why people are so against the war in Iraq. Everyone should have the opportunity to live freely. People should focus more on Sadam and lay off Bush. It is also a sad state of affairs when nancy Pelosi talks about investigating Bush for war crimes. I would rather spend the money and time investigating Pelosi, Frank and Dodd on the economic meltdown caused by the “housing give a way program” with fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
January 20, 2009 at 8:15 pm
Spent the day listening to inauguration coverage. O’s speech–as usual–was full of platitudes & generalities.
Do you think his stern-voiced statement to our enemies had them quaking in their boots? This was put out there for the average American’s consumption. In a few months (weeks?) Pres. Obama will be schmoozing with dictators. Should Castro croak, methinks The O won’t send vp Biden. He’ll pay his respects in person!
January 20, 2009 at 8:18 pm
I too share in the thoughts expressed here. I have been struggling with my feelings about President Bush. I didn’t vote for him and never thought the war was right. But I have come to truly, truly respect the fact that he never compromised who he is and I have a different historical view of him than I had when he was President. I really do admire someone who can stay true to himself.
I too want to thank President Bush for keeping the US from any more attacks after 9/11. Time will tell. If we are ever attacked again in the next 4 years, he will instantly become our hero.
January 20, 2009 at 8:20 pm
Stray: the last thing we have is money to line the pockets of special prosecutors to undertake their useless investigations. I’d say the crimes of both sides have nullified each other.
It was the Dems who stopped Fannie/Freddie oversight and enriched themselves and Franklin Raines, thus bringing this country to its financial knees. It was the Dems who stooped to Rovean tactics at their antidemocratic RBC meeting and prior to that at my NV Dem caucus and Dem caucuses around the country. And regardless of whether BO was born on U.S. soil, his having been a student in Indonesia at a time when ONLY Indonesian citizens were accepted as students, followed by no record of his having taken the oath of allegiance upon his return to this country, is a major dump on the Constitution.
So, please, take your uberliberal talking points and stuff ‘em. And keep your eyes closed and your head buried firmly in the sand so that it’ll be easier for your messiah to stick it to you.
Extremist knee-jerk talking points, Left and Right, don’t cut it in a place where citizens in search of truth and common ground congregate.
You strike me as one of those parents who thinks their kids do no wrong when in fact the obnoxious little brats continue to be the scourge of the neighborhood.
P.S. Thanks to Herr Doktor Dean, Brazilla, ACORN thugs, the One, and the Gang of Losers, after 35 years as a Dem, I reregistered as a nonpartisan in June. Free at last!
January 20, 2009 at 8:29 pm
Re: those who had to take a final swing at President Bush
My son is a lifer in the Marines and has been in Iraq twice. Through interpreters, Iraqis told my son & friends that indeed, Saddam had weapons. From 9-11 until we went into Iraq (March, 2002), many of them were sent into Syria and other countries.
The Axis of Evil George referred to was very accurate. “Mom, President Bush’s 2002 State of the Union address was right on,” he told us. “Iran is truly the head of the snake. These folks want to bring about the end of the world as we know it. And to get a foothold in the region, we had to be in Afghanistan and Iraq. Take a look at a map of the world, and see what an Iran-dominated Iraq/Afghanistan would have meant.”
As Hillbuzz said, the military loved President Bush. We civilians have the luxury of critiquing the President. But military personnel never let their opinions of the Commander in Chief be known.
November 13, 2009 at 8:21 pm
Please tell your son thank you for me and my family. Because of his service and the service of brave men and women like him, our country is safe from evils perpetrated in other countries on a daily basis.
January 20, 2009 at 8:32 pm
Oh, wow. What a beautiful, thoughtful, inspiring tribute. I’ve always been a big supporter of President Bush, and while I disagreed with many of his recent policies, I’ve been saddened by the hate and vitriol.
Seeing a former ‘non’ supporter offer thanks and appreciation as President Bush rides off into the sunset is a balm to my soul.
Thank you Hillbuzz.
January 20, 2009 at 8:36 pm
Excellent, HB! As usual, your comments are a feast to the heart and soul. May you always be here to set us straight, and keep us thinking.
January 20, 2009 at 8:43 pm
Well ih hindsight since that’s what this is..first Phew…..!!!!! I lived through it, sorry for GWB supporters…I am thinking more kindly towards him of late, sure it has to do with Obama and at this point the unknown…?
Won’t forget, wish he hadn’t given Cheney so much power…. Iraq should not have happened but I was prepared since I knew in my heart if GWB was POTUS we would go into Iraq since he said it himself.
But I have come to see the troops do greatly admire and respect him and that says alot to me now when looking back at it all.
Thank you , Hillbuzz another great post. :)
January 4, 2010 at 2:06 pm
Just saw this blog so this response is not timely but must correct the record, since ILBlue is not a student of history. Blue’s “I knew in my heart” we would go into Iraq just doesn’t jive with the record. Prior to the 2003 invasion, “W” brokered a deal where Egypt would take Saddam, Uday and Qusay into exile (true, more like a house arrest)and the US would not invade if they left Iraq. They refused and the rest is history.
January 20, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Thank you for this lovely article. I voted for President Bush twice and have always been proud to say so! The generous, gracious, and welcoming spirit he and Laura have shown leaving office has made me even more proud. With this article, you have matched that spirit. Thank You!
January 20, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Thank you Hillbuzz…this was beautiful. :)
January 20, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Thank you Hillbuzz for the moving tribute. Goodbye President Bush. You kept us safe and you put America first. I will miss you.
January 20, 2009 at 8:54 pm
I would have to agree the chanting , while I did not watch it, have read and heard about it was inappropriate and out of line.
Unfortunately so expected from Obots, he has never done anything to discourage this behavior from his supporters and his directions in the past to “Get in their Faces” would explain this action entirely.
No this NEW DEM PARTY of Pelosi, Reid, and Obama is enough to embarrass and shame any decent Clinton Dem.
And I have no doubt we’ll see much more of that in the coming 4-8 yrs unless some of these people come out of their kool aid coma.
January 20, 2009 at 9:02 pm
Pelosi is at it again. Hopefully she is orchestrating her own demise.

You have my respect, Hillbuzz.
January 20, 2009 at 9:23 pm
PVG..
Hope sge takes others along for the ride. Ha!!
What an evil women, and to think I was so proud a couple years ago.
No problem got over that fast.
January 20, 2009 at 9:36 pm
I was wondering where you were when I didn’t see a new column this morning and now I know… you were composing probably the only kind, thoughtful thank you George W. has received today. I too thank him, and hope that fool Pelosi gets off his back with her idiotic threats. Hillbuzz, good job!
January 20, 2009 at 9:39 pm
I did not vote for Bush either time.. but for the first time as a liberal person (I can’t call myself a democrat anymore), I finally see the liberals/democrats for the hypocrites that they are!
I thank mr.bush from the bottom of my heart for keeping this country safe. And trust me, this is very turn in my views, until the last couple of years, I could not stand bush.. not one iota..
but you know what I am realising.. now that the terrorist-palling, hamas-loving fool is in? I felt Bush would always keep the country safe, he didn’t care how much his own reputation would hurt, but he would do what is necessary to keep us safe…. and I cannot say that about the fraud and his american-loathing wife.
I may not agree with bush on most things.. but I thank him for keeping this beloved country of ours safe. And laura bush, how I will miss her as first lady.. I love laura bush, a class act all the way.
now we have a woman who according to her own words has been ashamed to be an american 43 of her 44 years.
January 20, 2009 at 10:03 pm
Beautiful post.
January 20, 2009 at 10:31 pm
I have never been a Bush supporter, however, I am proud of how he took the job of keeping America safe so seriously. I also feel bad for the total lack of respect given him, and the office of president.
The obots will have to remember how little respect was given this man and the office he held, when disrespect is shown to obama. I wont want to here it!
January 20, 2009 at 10:42 pm
Thank you for this message. It is very disheartening to hear some of the remarks- especially when one would think those making remarks would be too overjoyed for hate. I am proud of George W Bush. I appreciate his leadership and for sticking by his decisions. I am thankful for his service to our country and wish him the best.
January 20, 2009 at 10:53 pm
Thank you, HillBuzz, for a considerate and respectful tribute to President Bush.I did not vote for him,as I did not vote for Republicans until 2008 – my 12th presidential election. I, too, laughed at every line Bush flubbed, the door that wouldn’t open, his every mispronunciation of nuclear, and would not miss an evening clip of Letterman’s “Great Moments in Presidential Speeches” … that is until early 2008. Once circumstances reversed and participants changed places, I found myself, a Hillary supporter, disenfranchised, and remembered all of the times/years that I discounted those who held fast to opinions and beliefs different from mine; I made them caricatures in my own mind. I was so cocksure that I was right, the other side was wrong, Democrats were good and Republicans were bad. I feel bad about that now. I stopped laughing at G.W. and ceased finding Letterman funny some time ago. I’m just sorry it took the shoe being on the other foot (mine) to make me realize that President Bush did not deserve my ridicule, he deserved my respect.
January 20, 2009 at 10:54 pm
I never voted for Pres .Bush . But today when he left office I felt A Great Loss . A Loss for Our Country A loss For Unity. This is a Sad Day for America. I Believe we will never be the same. God help us.
January 20, 2009 at 11:01 pm
As a native Texan that voted for Preisent George W. Bush twice, I say Thank You. Yours were the kindest, most thoughtful words directed to our departing former president today.
He kept this country safe for 7+years following the attacks of 9/11/01. I remember the very real fear of further attacks that morning and wondering where the next ones would be? LA? Dallas? Chicago? Denver? Miami? Where?? He made the hard decisions that kept us all safe and pulled the country out of the economic tailspin we were in. He kept those murdering monsters that kill without a thought by blowing up children or beheading foreign workers from reaching American soil and plying their bloody trade in OUR streets.
Godspeed, Former President and Mrs. Bush, may your remaining days be restful and peaceful. You both have earned it.
Hillbuzz, you guys are tops in this Texas conservative’s book. Thanks again for the kind, heartfelt words to my fellow Texan. At this Friday’s GNO(girls’ night out) I shall lift a margarita or three in your honor.
January 20, 2009 at 11:12 pm
Beautifully written, HB. It’s great to hear from those with open minds and hearts. I feel very strongly, as you do, that Pres. Bush had one goal above all others: keeping us free from further attack at home. He succeeded. People want to bitch and whine about other things (like the economy) and though it isn’t good, you have to consider that if we were attacked again, this time with nuclear weapons or whathaveyou, we would not even HAVE an economy about which to worry. As far as I’m concerned, Bush was a wonderful protector of this country. And also, he is NOT as stupid as everyone wants to believe he is–I guarantee that years from now, when he writes his book, we will learn of many, many thwarted plots planned by terrorists. I guarantee, as long as it can legally be disclosed, we will hear of these.
I’m sure he is not a perfect person (who is?_ but he is a great man. Presidential duties aside, have you ever seen the way he adores his family? I mean he really seems mystified by Laura (a class act all the way), and his daughters. His photos with Jenna at her wedding were adorable.
I like Pres. Bush. I’m not ashamed to say it. He has made mistakes, BUT he has admitted them, and you will NEVER hear that from BO. Bush did the best he possibly could, and I thank him
Great piece, HB.
January 20, 2009 at 11:29 pm
Hillbuzz,
You know what? You should write George and Laura a letter and send it to their home. I mean it. You guys are the pefect example of bi-partisanship, and who a President can touch if he only aspires to. You bring up excellent points when you cite that he did not cut funding for LGBT, and the work he did on AIDs and on Malaria, and don’t forget Mrs. Bush’s push for literacy and women’s health issues–these are all things that anyone can admire, even if you didn’t vote for that person. And the fact that you boys no longer condone the bashing that some patrons were doing at the bar–those are all very moving and poignant examples of how great humanity can be sometimes–on your part and on GWB’s part.
I’ll bet a letter from you guys, or even a copy of this blog entry would move him to tears. Even though he never focused on his approval ratings, you know deep down it has to have gotten him down at some point in time. And after the kick in the balls he got today from some of those unwavering partisan losers…ugh. Now those are some true losers.
Anyhow, I think you should drop him and Laura a line. Just a suggestion. Your writing is too good not to share with him! Think about it?
January 20, 2009 at 11:32 pm
You have our permission to send whatever you like to him with our thanks. That could be an interesting project for you — get our post to him, to show him he won the respect of a bunch of Dems in Chicago who promise to critically evaluate his presidency and legacy, but never to badmouth him, and to not allow others to do it in our earshot as well.
We bet someone reading this could help you do that. We have almost no connections on the Republican side, so we’d never get very far with that.
But we are serious in our thanks — and we are hoping that we will see him in person sometime in 2009 and intend to shake his hand and tell him how grateful we are for his service. Count on that.
January 20, 2009 at 11:34 pm
Wow, what a terrific essay. I visit your site everyday because of your fabulous snarky comentary. Today, you said a mouth-full! When I am on other sites, and the Liberal Haters are all in simultanious “O”gasims and Bush is evil this and that, I always stop and remember my beloved PUMAs here on Hillbuzz and think, God, I love those guys! Hatred doesn’t look good on anyone. You all are so right.
Luv Ya

Thank you very much for expressing and showing respect to our outgoing President. As a military man I have had the oppurtunity to serve under both Presidents Clinton and G.W. Bush. I do not know of another President in my lifetime, with the exception of possibly Ronald Reagen, that held the military in such high esteem.
Former President Bush is a great man that did not govern by popular poll but rather through his convictions and his soul. That is what the military has taught me that defines a leader.
Thank you President Bush and God bless you.
January 21, 2009 at 12:12 am
I am so glad to see that I am not the only Democrat who can see past all the party rhetoric. No, there are plenty of things President Bush (& he is always addressed as such, by protocol; it’s not incorrect to still say this) did that I hated. Yes, I would rather have had other men be president. But, for all we know, he really was the only thing standing between us & the terrorist hordes – I do know for a fact that force is all they understand or respect. I truly did understand what he was trying to achieve in Iraq, and it was obvious that he was hoping he could avoid all the pitfalls the experts spelled out – after all, experts can be wrong, no? But it is nice to know that I am not the only one who can be glad he gone without have to gloat, & that it’s still okay to be worried for the future (but not so much, now that Hillary will be SoS!).
January 21, 2009 at 12:13 am
I’ll see what I can do, HB. I’ll keep you posted. Thanks for permission.
January 21, 2009 at 12:15 am
Keep us posted — and everyone always feel free to forward or send anything we do on to people who would enjoy it. That’s why it’s there.
January 21, 2009 at 12:24 am
You see, hillbuzz guys?
A lot of conservatives feel the same way that you do, and they’re not full of hate.
Can’t say the same thing about the Left after hearing that President Bush was Boo’d when he was introduced.
Can you possibly teach your side manners?
I will show you the utmost respect if you do.
I’ll show you respect even if you don’t, but could you pass the word on?
Hmmmm?
January 21, 2009 at 12:33 am
Tammy,
We try every day. It’s a promise we made when the Left treated Hillary Clinton so badly during the primaries, then did the same to Sarah Palin.
You can criticize a politician’s policies, achievements, and other choices — but name calling won’t be tolerated. Irrational hate won’t be tolerated. And no party deserves blind loyalty.
And if you want to attack a woman and call her sexist names and think you are going to get away with it — you’ve got another thing coming. That’s our mission from here on out.
November 11, 2009 at 7:10 pm
You could change the world with talk like that. Thank you, Life,Love and Peace to you HB.
January 21, 2009 at 12:33 am
I happen to believe the Office of the Presidency changes the occupant. I believe GWB never dreamed he would face the challenges during his presidency that he did. But he faced them squarely.
The press and book authors have sliced and diced him, but they can never change the fact that he has kept our country safer than we ever expected after 9/11. He was courageous and steadfast, and we remained safe because of it.
We can fuss and fume about the mistakes of each administration, but imagine being President of the United States. Imagine getting those security briefings after 9/11.
Now imagine a President fearing political witch hunts over any decision he or she makes, especially when it comes to keeping us safe. Imagine how vulnerable we all would be if that happened.
We need to choose worthy occupants of the Oval Office and let them do their jobs.
I wouldn’t be surprised if our new President can’t sleep tonight. For the first time in his brief life, the buck truly stops with him. He is The Decider.
It’s finally his time to be the One.
January 21, 2009 at 12:36 am
Mancos –
And we hope “The One”, the Lightbringer, is the miracle Messiah his followers claim he is.
We would be delighted if he was everything the say he is — and look forward to him solving all the world’s problems in the next four years. We expect that to only take until summer, for one so amazing and talented.
Can we have our unicorn by Fourth of July? We want to name it Firecracker.
January 21, 2009 at 1:18 am
What a beautifully written article. I am a Republican that voted twice for GWB. His actions and speaches after 911 won my admiration and I did not always agree with some of GWB’s domestic positions. As a native Texan I understood his speach patterns. Texans just talk differently but that does not mean we are not intelligent. I am a true conservative. But I believe each individual has the right to their beliefs and opinions and values. I also believe that exchange of beliefs/ideas has to be communicated in a respectful manner. Even as a Repub I was angered by the treatment of the two women in this campaign. We need to come together as Americans first and not political party to ensure events in this past election are never repeated. The MSM is also responsible for O’s winning the Presidency and the attacks on HC and Sarah. I found this site because of the PUMA roar and enjoy the postings of individuals, while not as conservative as I may be, but still dedicated Americans.
January 21, 2009 at 1:32 am
Out of office less tham 24 hrs and I already miss former President Bush. A news story came out yesterday in the UK Sun about an al-Qaeda camp in Algeria being decimated by bubonic plague last month.(Yes, the same stuff that hit Europe twice during the Middle Ages, killing millions.) A follow-up article on American Thinker from 01/20/09 states that this was no accident. The terrorists were attempting to craft the plague bacteria into a biological weapon. (Care to take odds on where they wanted to use it?)During the campaign, some tried to downplay the terrorists threats still faced by America. This story proves the boogeymen are real and they are still gunning for us.
Playtime is over, Hope and Change. Former President Bush kept this country safe for over 7 years. Will you be able to? Tens of millions of Americans are depending on you to do the same.
January 21, 2009 at 2:10 am
Thank you, HillBuzz, from the bottom of my heart for such a beautiful and moving tribute to President Bush.
As a relatively conservative Independent, it has hurt my heart to see the way this brave and good man has been treated, especially over the last three years.
I so appreciate your honesty in re-evaluating your earlier opinion of him and making a true effort to see him for the dedicated public servant he has been. Not a day has gone buy in the last either years that I did not think he was doing what he thought was in the very best interest of our country.
God Bless America and President Bush, and may He bring enlightenment to those are too blinded by hatred to see clearly.

love this, thank you. 9/11 was what turned me, a ranting and raving, Bush-hating liberal, completely around. The ugliness that I saw on the left— that I used to BE— shamed me. When I thought of a potential President Gore’s reaction to 9/11, I was really scared. I finally shut up and listened. Then I became a mom, and I started to see President Bush as our collective father, so proud and protective and silent and strong. He has my complete admiration and respect.

Hillbuzz and everyone~
Did you see Pres. Bush’s welcome home speech? It’s really cute; they look THRILLED to be home! I don’t blame them. Here it is:

I read a posting of someone I admired very much today. It was filled with the most vile rantings sending off Bush. I fully agree that type of venom is petty and unattractive. There is a level that these people go to that I just can’t relate to. And I’m no Bush supporter, and my understanding is this person lost an immediate family member in the war, but her negativity and vitriol garnered the adoration of hundreds upon hundreds of complimentary comments on how brilliant and poetic she was for spreading her hatred. Blind Obama zombies are some of the most hostile hate-filled people I’ve ever seen. Why are these people still angry? They got what they wanted.
It’s true, never hate because these people have become exactly what they’ve always said they hate, they want to silence you when you disagree, they stonewall you, and they spew ugly poison from every pore at anyone who differs in opinion. These are the “unity people” and the “open minded.”
The democratic party has left me abandoned and does not give one crap about me. I’m fully aware of this now. I think all politicians are bull and deserving of mockery for their lies and criminal acts but I don’t like bullies of any stripe.
He’s gone, they have their messiah who will be continuing wars, will keep troops in iraq, will wire tap, has the same foreign policies as Bush and is a total gaffe machine. But Rachel Maddow keeps cheer leading, and Maddow tells them how to feel. So that’s that.
There will always be that core group that will continue to support him no matter what he does but the truth will come out about Barry soon enough.

You’re not alone LM!
We love you on the right just as much as they do anywhere else.
THink about it and join the fold!
We need more thoughtful commentary like yours and Hillbuzz.
As for Hillbuzz…bravo!!!
And thanks for soberly realizing that conservatives don’t hate liberals but rather just think they are wrong. We each have our opinions and I’m just as willing to protect your opinions as my own but clarity without hate helps each of us understand each other better. And hopefully we just come together as proud Americans! We are blessed to live in this great country and to also have great Americans like HB shooting straight and talking sense!!
January 21, 2009 at 4:40 am
Thank you for the considerable work you must have put into that thoughtful commentary. That was a great read.
One small point, however — you wrote, “Democrats can be just as nasty and hate-filled as the insufferably vile Rev. Fred Phelps.” I share your opinion of Phelps, but you should be aware that he is himself a long-time Democrat.
January 21, 2009 at 7:20 am
Thank you President Bush for your unwavering commitment to life and freedom for all Americans and our brothers and sisters around the world. None of us can truly know the depth of the decisions you had to make, and while hindsight is 20/20, I truly believe you protected our country from horrific terrorist attacks because you held true to your convictions and did not merely bend to popular opinion. My family and I respect you greatly for that. I know that God is greatly pleased by your humility, love of our country, and service. I wish you and First Lady Laura Bush all the best.
January 21, 2009 at 9:22 am
Thank you Hillbuzz. Very gracious piece. I didn’t vote for him either time, but I don’t believe he is an evil or a stupid man. This is not a day for vitriol or carping. I think that history will view him more kindly than he is viewed now. He deserves the gratitude of the nation. I, for one, wish him and his family all God’s blessing.
January 21, 2009 at 10:14 am
Thank you for that essay. It’s nice to see some that are still out there who honor what he did and tried to do in office.
January 21, 2009 at 10:32 am
What this election 2008 did for me (and some of us) was free us from the hatred of Republicans that went along with being a staunch democrat. Since I am no longer an automatic democrat, having not voted in Nov. 2008, I am open to liking whoever I choose, and I choose to like some Republicans for the first time in my life. I am ashamed of the Republican bashing I have done throughout my life. When the GOP stole the elections in 2000 and 2004, it was not okay, and I was furious and said so repeatedly for 8 years. When the DNC stole the election in 2008 in the most vile and corrupt way, headed by Dean, Pelosi, Reid, Brazille and Barack Obama, it was not okay and I have said so repeatedly during this past year to the dismay of my friends, relatives and co-workers.
For today, at least, I think almost kindly of George W, even though he had no business being president and the world would be a totally different (and hopefully better) place today if Al Gore had assumed his rightful role as our 43rd president. I am greatful Bush pardoned the two border patrol agents as his last act, something which I have wanted him to do for a long time. It shows me he is not as clueless as he pretends to be. Also, he and Laura seem to have been unusually gracious to the Obamas. I would like to see some gratitude and humility coming from the Obamas but that is a post for a different day. My heart continues to break for the needless deaths in Iraq and all the families (both American, Iraqi and beyond) who have suffered under this obscene war. I pray that the new administration can get us out of Iraq safely. But for now, the Bushes land in Texas and I wish them and their families well, only I ask one thing of them, please, no more Bushes in high office!!!
January 21, 2009 at 11:06 am
Thanks hillbuzz. You guys are the best. I enjoy checking in everyday to see what you have to say and I tell as many people as I can about this site.
Yesterday, I heard so much talk about now is the time for us to “work together.” If all of these same people saying this had been “working together” in past years instead of only bashing Bush and hating the Republicans what a different world this would be. Can you only “work together” when Obama is in office????? Will you “work together” in 4 years if Obama is no longer in office????? Can we replay the videos of these same people saying this in the future when they are bashing the opposing party once again and refusing to “work together” in 4/8 years?
angels81: You need to read up on how this country works and learn history. Are you going to come here whining when there is another terrorist attack on this country, on American soil? No, I’m sure we won’t hear from you then. Do you really still believe Bush is responsible for the Katrina aftermath and NOT Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco for screwing their own people? Oh wait, let me think about that and get back to you in 24 hours in the same way Blanco did when Bush tried to send in help – bet you forgot that little fact didn’t you? People obviously need help and Blanco wants to “think about it” – WTG Governor Blanco! No, let’s open up the Superdome and let these same people in to wreck the place like they did previously when Hurricane Georges came through (1999 I believe) and not hold them responsible even though the news media had them on tape walking out with bar stools, even a couch (yes, a couch), etc., etc. Go back a lot further than Bush to see that the Democrats are the one’s screwing this country. I thank W. Bush for keeping us safe for many years.
Stray: Criminal acts? You’ve got to be kidding. I bet Obama will be wiretapping everybody and everything, you’ll just never know it.
Riddlemethis: When you get the info as to where I can send my mortgage and gas bills each month be sure to post it here.
PVG: Darn, you just burst my bubble! LOL
I’ll end with saying that with all the hatred I’ve witnessed on the news and Internet it has changed my life. Who in their right mind would ever want to be like all those people? Not me.
January 21, 2009 at 11:16 am
NIC (#87): Thanks for the link to the welcome home for the the Bush family. It was neat.

The whole world stopped during the inauguration of President Obama. Even trading everywhere fell! I guess the whole world was interested to hear what’s it gonna be from then on.
After all, the economic mess that the world is in now all started in America.
And, maybe it was just bad luck by Mr. Bush.
January 21, 2009 at 12:12 pm
sure thing,Joanne!
January 21, 2009 at 12:15 pm
Oh, gosh dude. I really don’t like Bush, and I kind of love this post. No, I LOVE this post. What a very balanced, respectful look back at his presidency. Honestly. Thanks for putting this up.
I featured a post along these lines on Blog Nosh Magazine today, as well. Because I think it IS important to look back with respect.
Gorgeously done. Maybe I could feature one of your posts someday, too.
January 21, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Beautiful tribute!!
I never voted for President Bush, but also during the election began to look at things differently. Thank you President Bush
January 21, 2009 at 1:08 pm
After watching the swearing in of our new 44th President of the United States yesterday, it reminded of the day when you George W. Bush, was sworn in as our 43rd. The turmoils, triumphs, through your presidency was just what no one asked for but it has made us a better America today. When everyone thought you stole the election in 2000, I knew that you would be our next President without any doubt; after 9-11 you delivered bringing America together; the unfortunate wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan, then the economic fall out from the housing industry. Just remember one thing, you never gave up demonstrating courage under fire and steady leadership. Also, proud to call you my commander-in-chief despite the naysayers. Thank you George W Bush, for your service and it has been graciously done.
January 21, 2009 at 2:13 pm
Yesterday, bush’s helicopter flew over the crowd of over 2 million Obama supporters, and everyone shouted, “Good riddance.” It was most appropriate.
January 21, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Thanks for your words.
January 21, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Amazing Post! It is really refreshing to see some positive things about Bush who really wasn’t that bad of a President. Great job!
January 21, 2009 at 3:05 pm
Thank you GWB for protecting the citizens of the “USA” since 9/11/2001 and for making the difficult decision and sticking to it through the controversy that you endured for almost 8 years. Live well and long in your retirement as you deserve it for a Job Well Done,(good and faithful servant.)
January 21, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Yes thank you President Bush. Thank you for leaving us in a war we cannot win that costs billions a year. Thank you for leaving our economy in horrible shape. Thank you for all of that wonderful work you did.
January 21, 2009 at 3:38 pm
I think it’s really funny to read the hateful comments (especially about Obama’s “hideous” wife) coming after an essay that was essentially about ending that kind of partisan hate. I don’t think George Bush was an evil man, just short-sighted and ethnocentric. Like most world leaders. I would never *thank* him, but I certainly wouldn’t “booh” him off stage, either.
I understand and agree with the general theme of your post, but George “Dubya” Bush and his government did break the law and contravene the constitution multiple times. While you can appreciate the things he did right, it’s important not to forget the things he did wrong (and I’m not talking about screwing up speeches).
January 21, 2009 at 4:58 pm
Get real, the putz could not put two words together without any distored facial tics. Goodbye you and your separtist main man, the crip Cheney.
January 21, 2009 at 5:06 pm
I think that while no one can agree completely with every choice President Bush made, I think that for the most part I feel that he did have the country’s best interest in mind when he made the hard decisions. I think the guy has a big heart. Now, I just pray that President Obama will have the same interest when making his decisions, even if I don’t agree with all his stand points. Just keep them all in your prayers.

He rides off into the sunset. And as the sun sets on his old world of walls, the ghosts of over four thousand American men and women roam the fields and palaces of Babylon, and wait at the triumphal arches for the one who did ferry them from this world to the next. Alas, Charon has left his post for a ranch in Texas.

Dearest Former President George W. Bush,
i thank you kindly for being our president for eight years, i know being a president is one of the hardest jobs, and i know you had tried your best. Every president must have messed up at one point, and every president will mess up. i must also thank you for keeping us safe after 9/11. but now we have gone to President Barack Obama. we all thank you for leading us fro eight years. peace from me!
January 21, 2009 at 5:55 pm

i will miss you a lot cuz who would Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert make fun of? well i guess i should say thanks cuz i know it aint easy being president, but daaang you are hilarious to listen to. Thanks for leading us fro eight real long years. President Obama, can you please sound a bit more professonal than W, and think about what you say. Change for 2009! buh-bye Bush hullo Obama! =P

Wow.
Just an amazing, outstanding post.
You honored the man without abandoning your beliefs, and in the process wrote about the best thing I’ve read in months.
You should be extremely proud of this work. Well done, and thank you.
January 21, 2009 at 8:12 pm
It’s good to hear from a moderate. I never voted for George Bush either but I also don’t ascribe to the embarrassing, vile, dumbass “Buck Fush” mentality that so many of the former president’s detractors do. I also think his exit was a graceful one. He’s done much in the past few months to ensure that President Obama’s transition goes as smoothly as possible and that’s more than some former presidents have done. I hope he enjoys his retirement in that state he loves so much.
January 21, 2009 at 8:42 pm
A wonderful post… truly. I am just speechless, except to just say… thank you from the bottom of my heart. Please consider writing a book. I think your views and opinions need to be heard right about now by a great many people. Love you guys and thanks for the laughs along the way, too. I’m still reeling at the “soylent green” shoes….
January 22, 2009 at 12:11 am
The Bush family are crooks from generations back and architects of the New World Order. They installed Obama (look at where his early money came from). Don’t get so sentimental that you welcome Jeb with open arms in 2012.
January 22, 2009 at 11:31 am
I for one already miss him. Dick Cheney and Carl Rove are two of the greatest Americans in my life time. God bless all of them.
January 22, 2009 at 12:30 pm
What a refreshing read. I was very ashamed of those so called Americans that acted so classless toward GWB & Laura during the inauguration. It was a disgusting display of ignorance. If this is Hope and Change, people we are in a lot of trouble!
Let’s not forget who kept us safe for the last 7 years and who increased funding for AIDS in Africa. Also, let’s not forget what Laura did for the women in Afghanistan and Iraq.
I wonder how the Messiah would feel if HIS wife was treated the way Laura was on Tuesday.

January 23, 2009 at 9:07 pm
I want to “Thank You” for being a President of such strong convictions. I didn’t always agree with your decisions, but I never doubted your intentions. History will show everyone what I’ve known all along. “Thank You” for keeping our country safe. God Bless You and your family with a wonderful life.
January 24, 2009 at 2:10 am
Thank you for your service as President for the last eight years. I know that you did what you felt was right for our nation, even if it wasn’t popular. The mark of a true leader. I pray that you have peace and joy during your retirement and wish you all the best in the years to come. When the history books are written I am sure you will be remembered as one of the great presidents such as Washington, and Lincoln. Thank You! You are missed.
January 25, 2009 at 2:24 pm
But I guess he did his best.
January 25, 2009 at 8:14 pm
thank you dubya. i would vote for you again. you kept us safe. you did not worry about the polls (as clinton did). you kept your nose to the grindstone and did what you knew was best. history will look upon you as one of the greats. you are a classy man, and i bet we will never have another first lady like your beautiful wife, laura.
good luck to you. well done, “good and faithful servant.”

Every time I hear of another country saying how they hated Bush and his “swagger” or his “cowboy way” or his “arrogance”, I miss him and like hime even more. It takes guts to do what is right for the American people with so many bullies trying their best to knock you down with every step. Not least among them the American elitist media.
Thanks George W. Bush and God bless.
I have a feeling I will misss him more and more over the next four years.

We at http://www.thankw.com agree and also wish to Thank George Bush for a job well done.
February 8, 2009 at 5:03 pm
What struck me in this essay was that you guys characterize a truly loyal opposition. Something that, as a country, we have been sorely lacking. You did not agree with President Bush, but you have the open mindedness to see the goodness of the man and the courage to rebuke the Left for their terrible treatment of a President trying to deal with very difficult circumstances.
Keep up the good work and know that many of us on the conservative side of the political fence appreciate and will always respect your opinion. Your integrity speaks volumes.
February 10, 2009 at 9:28 am
Dear President Bush,
You will go down in history as the last great president America ever elected. God Bless You and Laura for your steadfast leadership, class, kindness and determination to lead this country to a place of greatness. Our forefathers fought and died for this land so that we might enjoy freedom in America. It saddens me greatly when I see what is happening to our country now. We need more men like you Mr. President. I only wish Americans would open their minds and not their hands. Entitlements are destroying Americans and their will to work for what they want. I hope God shows mercy on my children and grandchildren in what I see as a very scary future for this once great country.
February 23, 2009 at 8:13 pm
I just want to thank you for keeping us safe for the last 8 years. I don’t believe that will be the same in the future. Help us take back America and keep it conservative. I really enjoyed meeting you before you became president. I know that you would going to go down in history as a great president and I am hoping that other people will realize all that you did for us and be greatful. May God bless you and Laura and your family for the years to come and help us take back our country!

I came upon this piece while searching for an address to send a thank you to President George W. Bush. I now wish to thank you HIllBuzz for a significant piece of honest and thoughtful writing. We truly believe that President George W. Bush will be judged by historians as one of the best we ever had; he was morally decent, honest and never put himself first; instead he thought of America.
March 5, 2009 at 12:43 pm
I am thankful for the time that you committed to this country – fighting for what was right and wholesome and fair.
I am now worried, and have been worried, even under your reign, about the future of my children and grandchildren. My grandchildren do not have the right to choose the next president, but they will surely reap the consequence.
I am concerned about our homeland security, instead of having a finger in every land mined across the globe. We are combatting evil here every day, yet we committ so much money to ensure the “security” is in place. Consider the jobs that may be secured if government would address the people that are working in the US illegially? We have compromised our very being to accommodate those that “sneak” into the country. We cannot begin to question why we are in the mess we are in – I am out of work, and I feel confident that there are alot of illegal immigrants that are not out of work – will this new mandate from our wonderdful governement give the illegal immegrants more jobs, instead of the US contractors, suppliers, and administrative assistants that make this US economic world go around???. We are at a terrible turning point.
Respectfully,
Lorey Callan

A beautiful tribute, Hillbuzz — and one that took a lot of guts to write. It’s hard to admit that you were wrong about something; it’s a lot harder to admit it in front of the world.
George Walker Bush was never close to perfect; who is? But he did the best he could under extremely trying circumstances. He also was a firm hand when the United States needed one, a man willing to go the distance because it was the right thing to do. You don’t need to agree with his policies to appreciate that.
Let me add that I have tremendous respect for the man, in terms of the unprecedented abuse he took for his entire eight years in Washington, pretty much. I can’t even imagine how I’d cope with being called a Nazi every single day, being depicted with fangs dripping blood all over the world, being called the vilest things for any or no reason. Mr. Bush took it, head on, and didn’t let it turn his head. He never lost his sense of the dignity of the Presidency, and he never lost his sense of humor.
I doubt one in a million of us could stand up to what he did, with the grace and strength that he had. What an amazing guy.
(And now we have a President who complains when the press asks him difficult questions, and tries to demonize an American news agency (!) because they openly criticize his appointees’ qualifications. I don’t know about Hope, but this is certainly Change.)
respectfully,
Daniel in Brookline
November 13, 2009 at 11:38 am
Thank you for this tribute!!! I really wish the mainstream media would acknowledge the daunting task President Bush had in office!! Please would you release this tribute to all the media networks mainstream and cable?
November 13, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Who ARE you guys?
The Lamestream Media would have us believe that EVERYTHING is either LEFT or RIGHT. No middle ground.
But to acknowledge an outgoing Republican president as having been better than the MEDIA has portrayed him?
You show that you have brains. That Bush, while flawed, and made more than a few mistakes, STILL has his heart in the right place. AND that there is no doubt how HE feels about America.
For the above heresies, I am sure that you will be BLASTED by the media. But not by ME.
Thanks.

Thank you guys so much for such beautiful prose. I cried with both sadness and joy as I read this farewell to GW & Laura.
I’m a conservative blogger, but like others have said here, I am so glad that we find more things in common than we have in difference.
I, too, miss W and Laura; George may have been clumsy, but he always spoke from his heart. So if his Texan drawl came out (I’m an Okie, so I can relate), it just endeared him more to me. It meant he believed what he was saying. And Laura? What a beautiful, gracious woman. She is dearly missed on the public stage. Such class.
Much love to you guys,

A brilliant read…which I can tell is from the heart. What I loved about W is that he did what he felt was the right thing to do. There was gobs of evidence for the Iraq invasion…I could give you 30 democratic quotes from prominent dems who felt we needed to curtail Saddam through military force. The effectiveness of a war is never evaluated quickly…it will take decades to surmise whether Iraq was worth it or not. Thank you for giving thanks to an honorable man whose main fallacy it appears is his inability to make it through a speech without fumbling a bit.
November 13, 2009 at 9:41 pm
Wow, imagine that, President Bush was NOT to blame for everything terrible in the world!
From a Moderate(though leaning heavy towards the Right/Conservative), I commend you for being honest and rational in a world of polarized media and nutjobs.
I agree he didn’t do everything right; I also agree he didn’t do everything wrong, as many would have us believe.
I’m officially a fan of Hillbuzz!

Hi guys, Great farewell there considering how far you had to come to that point. Couple points you might have missed. Not only did President Bush increase AID’s fighting funding here in the US but he massively increased in for Africa along with lots of other aid to Africa. The whole thing about not “calling on people to join the military or the Peace Corps” is in the same bucket as not trying to become Emperor or King or somesuch. Might not seem like it, but it is. It is also about thinking things through before acting. It would take too much space to explain but there are good reasons for not doing that. Finally, Iraq won’t just hopefully be free and prosperous some day, which is good and helpful, but take a look at the map. It is smack dab in the middle of the cesspool and W (I think knowingly) lit the fuze that may some day transform the entire Mideast. Iran is is already on the verge of revolution, in no small part due to what happened next door…people know it could be different. Once Roger Bannister broke the 4 minute mile, a bunch of guys did it right after that..because they knew it was possible! It won’t be pretty, but change is coming to that area of the world, and if it works out, W should get a lot of the credit.

Thanks guys for giving me hope again that peoples hearts and minds can be changed. I’m a conservative and my brother is a gay liberal. I’ve never seen such hate for one man than what comes from my brothers mouth about GWB. I’m truly not joking when I say that I believe he would kill himself before saying one good word about the man. He recently sent me the most harsh email I have ever gotten from him. But this time he was calling me the bad names. He did this because he was mad that Scott Brown won the senate seat in Mass. I didn’t write him back and I won’t. I’ll give him time to cool off before talking to him again. I just hope that somehow his eyes can be opened as yours have. GWB had his faughts, but he is a very kind hearted man that never once deserved the name calling and torment thown his way by so many in this nation. I’ve never been ashamed of my country, but I was once ashamed of its people. Thank you again for restoring true hope to me.
