Things are getting more and more interesting in the drama to replace Obama in the Senate.
Apparently, Harry Reid’s on tape in conversations with Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich shortly before his arrest insisting no black replace Obama in the Senate. Reid wanted either Tammy Duckworth or Lisa Madigan, since Reid believed (correctly) that Jesse Jackson Jr., Emil Jones, Danny Davis, or other black politicians won’t be able to win election in their own right in 2010.
The other day when Congressman Bobby Rush whipped out the race card to pressure acceptance of Roland Burris as Obama’s Senate replacement, it seemed like Rush was just reading from the successful Obama playbook, and race-baiting without cause for political gain.
Now, it looks like Rush was really onto something, and Reid is doing everything he can to keep a black Senator off the table…because Reid wants to hold that seat in 2010 and does not believe a black Senator will hold it. Based purely on the color of that Senator’s skin.
Which makes Reid, in a sense, racist…and the parallel between him and George Wallace, as used by Rush, just got more credible. Threatening to bar Burris from the Senate with armed guards is indeed very similar to Wallace’s use of armed guards to bar black students from schools. Just because Burris is black, and does not fit into Reid’s 2010 plans.
Tammy Duckworth’s not guaranteed a Senate seat in 2010 if she ran after an appointment. The Democrats in Illinois tried to force Duckworth into Congress in 2006, and that failed. She’s a very nice woman who served her country bravely in Iraq, but she’s never going to set the world on fire. She’s a mediocre speaker at best, has trouble revving up crowds, does not command a large political following, and would be something of a joke in Illinois if people weren’t so afraid of being accused of making fun of her disabilities. When most people here hear her name, they say, “Oh, that poor woman,” and feel bad about her loss of limbs, but don’t necessarily translate that sympathy into a burning zeal to vote for her.
Lisa Madigan, from where we sit, is already running for Governor, a role the Madigan family prefers she fill — as, with Mike Madigan the current Speaker of the Illinois House, that’s much better for the Madigans, where they’d essentially control two branches of government in the state. So Reid’s efforts to bully her into the Senate are silly.
And Democrats’ claims to be the champions of black voters are just plain ridiculous. Blacks aren’t even being CONSIDERED for Senate replacements in Delaware, New York, or Colorado. Why not? Surely there must be a black candidate SOMEWHERE in all of those states.
But, evidently, Harry Reid doesn’t want any blacks to serve in the Senate, for whatever reason, so what does that say about Democrats?
Not that anyone seems to care, in the lingering haze of hopium, but it’s there for you to see it.

Identity politics is coming home to roost. When identity trumps ideas and qualification, the system is broken. Obama’s election is purely identity politics.

And so it begins. And PEBO has’nt even been sworn in yet. Hahahahaha. The obots staggering hypocrisy is being flung right back at them. Love it!
Blago may be another dirty Chicago pol but right now I’m loving him. Keep it up Blago!
January 3, 2009 at 3:15 pm
With everyone on tape, this is turning out like one of those RICO cases. Let’s get Rudy back in here, for old times sake.
January 3, 2009 at 3:29 pm
Loving Blago too. I can’t wait to see what unfolds next. Democrats haven’t even gotten control yet, and their blind power hungry ambitions are rolling out everywhere — NY, IL, MN, etc.
Obama’s reign already has a stink on it that is bigger than that swirling vortex of plastic bottles in the Pacific Ocean. And the world is catching on too.

Everything that is happening makes me smile and appeciate what is happening to the democrats. What a sweet way to have leading up to the messiah’s annointing.
January 3, 2009 at 3:34 pm
As a Mississippian who has been accused of racism, based on nothing but my place of birth, I find this to be just too, too, good. It is hilarious and I do pray that it will reveal the hypocrisy of the democrats, especially dingy harry reid.

Reid doesn’t think a black
is “as good” as a white.
THAT’S THE VERY DEFINITION OF RASISM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i find it appaling that there are no blacks in the senate.bo was the only one????????wtf…………
January 3, 2009 at 3:52 pm
I hope this opens some eyes and that blacks will see that they have been USED by the Democratic party all along. It was never about black issues. It was always and still is about obtaining black votes to maintain the politician’s power.
For too long both parties have counted on their reliable lapdogs for votes (blacks for dems, evangelicals for GOP, etc.) Honey, no longer am I anybody’s lapdog! How I wish we could form a viable 3rd party that is about “the people” before these wicked politicians ruin what little good is left in America.

shameful
January 3, 2009 at 4:00 pm
Reid is assuming of course as well that the state of Illinois is racist. 2004 is a bad example since BHO elimnated Ryan by exposing his sex scandal and Keyes ran against him. However, Mosley-Braun was elected to that seat in 1992, at that time, the only black Senator. I, as a Republican, must laugh my butt off at this race and identity politics coming back to bite the jackasses in the ass.
January 3, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Disgusting behavior, but this is bad karma for Obama.
January 3, 2009 at 4:03 pm
I absolutely adore this blog, but this time I think your comparison is pushing the envelope.Reid is a worm and to have charges of racism! racism! racism! leveled at him is payback to say the least, but when Rush used the words hang and lynch he lost me.
January 3, 2009 at 4:15 pm
No, of course not.
He just thinks all you racist rednecks living in Illinios won’t vote for a black man.
January 3, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Reid is getting some karma that’s long over due. Hope he and McCaskill are defeated when their terms are up.Can’t wait for Nan and Barky to get their turns, too.
January 3, 2009 at 4:44 pm
There is but another angle which has to do with the fact that Reid is a doctrinaire Mormon and, frankly, his church has a appaling legacy in the area of race relations…
Only modified it in ‘78, when it became politically expedient, just like when they allowed polygamy in 1890!
January 3, 2009 at 5:33 pm
“…and does not fit into Reid’s 2010 plans.”
WTF!!!!! Not fit into Reid’s plans? What about the people of IL? They should have a say into who goes to Washington to represent their intrests. This is not just a gigantic political chess game. Oh pardon me. Yes. This is 2009 and democracy is dead in America. It is just one more ploy to get, keep, and weild power by the rich for the rich.
January 3, 2009 at 5:39 pm
This doesn’t read right, sorry. Emil Jones was going to be just a placeholder, by your previous posts. It’s possible someone knows something about JJJ, which may influence future election chances. DD isn’t famous or charismatic, what the Senate seems to be looking for these days. If you’re going to target these “nays” as blacks, why not note the two candidates Reid put forth were both women? Maybe he’s a reverse sexist, not a racist.
January 3, 2009 at 5:42 pm
The original Sun-Times piece didn’t pick up on the race angle at all, which they should not have. This is objective reporting as it should be. What I object to is the double standard. It’s “objective” reporting when it impugns one of their own and editorial in nature when it is against those they don’t like.
January 3, 2009 at 5:55 pm
Actually the Democratic Party has the worst record on race equality. History tells us this. The Republican Party at its inception was anti-slavery. They supported race equality. JFK didn’t support civil rights in the beginning. He had to be convinced to srand for race equality.
Since history tells us this why do AAs and others vote Democratic? Until last year I always thought the DP was the party of the people, I was sadly mistaken.
The problem with the GOP they have morphed from the party of the people to something barely recognizable. The GOP is not the party of the old. When the GOP was established it was absent of the “religious” right. Remember Lincoln was a Republican.
Basically the only conclusion I can make is neither party represents us the voter.
Harry Reid does appear to be acting like a modern day “george wallace”. Of this there is no doubt.
January 3, 2009 at 6:13 pm
No surprises in my direction. Yes, why can’t
Gov. Patterson chose a qualified black female to replace Sen. Clinton seat.
January 3, 2009 at 7:24 pm
Technically, Reid would be a biggot, not a racist.
A racist is someone who believes in the inherient superiority of one race over another. A biggot is someone who discriminates based on race.
Reid isn’t saying he thinks blacks are inferior. He is saying he believes the people of Illinois feel that way. So he is discriminating against the black candidates because of their race, not because he believes them to be inferior.

This is embarrassing. How can anyone take the politics of this country seriously?
As my dad often said, “Give them enough rope, they’ll hang themselves”.

Great comment PVG…. I was raised with that phrase and forgotten all about it… I hope Blago continues to fight just to see how many names are intertwined in all of this…Do you think the media is getting a tad nervous?

Harry Reid certainly appears to be both a racist and a liar. Maybe he doesn’t think that black men’s brains are as good as his. (and i thought those days were over) poor me, i was fooled. Harry Reid, go back to Nevada or wherever you came from because we will make sure that the new breed including blacks take over D.C.

What I am more worried about is that Harry Reid is trying very hard to control is the state political process. Whether anyone likes it or not Blago is still the governor of Illinois until he is convicted in court not by the press or other very biased officials.
These are very difficult times and leaving Illinois under-represented is dangerous and rather curious because something is really admiss about all this. What is really happening here by leaving the Senate short one senator and a Democrat at that? Does this mean that Obama will continue to hold a Senate seat until a replacement is found? I know that he vacated but something is really very wrong about this. Let’s move past racism and discover what is really happening here. There is something strategic here. What is it?
Is it a bid to control the state political process from the federal end? If the Senate does not like who is selected by the state process, will they prevent that person from entering the Senate or even House?
